The second College Science Week of the new Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists ran from 11 – 13 July 2013, and again lived up to its reputation as being Australia’s premier veterinary scientific meeting. As always the staff at the QT Gold Coast Hotel were exceptionally helpful, and the Gold Coast produced beautiful weather and many migrating whales for the 550 delegates who participated in the highly successful multi-stream programme produced by fifteen College chapters.
College Council welcomed to Science Week an important international guest: Professor Dimitri Raptopoulas, representing the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation. Dr Raptopoulas is the new CEO of the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation. Council was able to have interesting discussion with Dimitri regarding ongoing close association between the ANZCVS and European Board of Veterinary Specialisation and explore options for future collaborative opportunities with European Colleges.
This year we held two Science Week Plenaries. The first introduced by Dr Liz Norman, Assistant Chief Examiner (Examinations) was entitled “Measuring what we want to measure: writing excellent questions for College examinations”.
The second presented by Dr Mark Owen and Dr Peter Bennett was entitled “Training programs of excellence: Institution or Individual?” Both plenaries attracted a large audience.
Thank you to the Board of Examiners Training and Credentials Committee and Examination Committee for their ongoing efforts to improve our examination process.
The College is delighted to welcome Dr Mandy Burrows to Council; although Dr Burrows has been a member of Council as the Chief Examiner, she is now and elected member of the Council and we welcome her hard work and enthusiasm. Dr Michael Paton is also re-elected and welcomed back on council taking over as Honorary Treasurer. Dr Mark Owen will join Council as Chief Examiner. I also welcome our new Executive Officer Mr Kim Hudson who joined the College this month.
I also acknowledge and welcome new and existing members of the Board of Examiners and assure them they will have the support of the College Membership and that of Council in their task of continuing to improve our examination process.
I would like to thank the College office staff for their ongoing commitment and hard work for the College. Elaine Lowe is, as always, a fountain of knowledge and information. I greatly thank her for her support. Elaine is well supported by Sharon Tinsley. I would also like to take this opportunity thank our Examinations Officer Robyn Pettigrew whom many of you will have met at Science Week.

2The Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists | September 2013
We undertook a survey of the membership both at Science Week and also by email recently to determine how, when and where the membership wishes to continue with Science Week. The results will be collated, discussed by Council and included in the next edition of the Courier.
Finally as always I wish to thank all members of the College for their ongoing support and remind you I am always available if there are any issues I am able to help you with. Telephone - work +61(0)738417011 or via email – [email protected]. I look forward to seeing you at Science week in 2014.
Philip Moses, College President
Science Week 2013
The College’s Science Week was once again held in early July at the 5 star Gold Coast QT International Hotel. A total of sixteen Chapters were involved in the 3 day scientific programme, which was attended by a total of 550 delegates – a record. There was a daily average of some 400 participants.
Eleven streams ran concurrently each day with input from all of the Chapters of the College.
The following Chapters are to be congratulated for providing informative & innovative scientific programmes that varied in length from half a day to the full three days: Small Animal Medicine, Surgery, Dentistry, Ophthalmology, Animal Welfare, Cattle, Vet Anaesthesia, Emergency and Critical Care, Feline Medicine, Dermatology, Animal Behaviour, Feline Medicine, Oncology, Equine, Animal Reproduction, Avian Health, and Epidemiology.
It was a major benefit to members and other registrants to have so much to choose from, and the collegiate atmosphere complimented the superb scientific content.
In recent years, combined sessions have emerged to pool the talent and expertise of associated Chapters to discuss controversial or topical issues. This year was no exception, there being twelve half-day sessions of collaboration between some fifteen Chapters.
All sessions were well attended despite the abundance of CE supplied by alternative providers. The Small Animal related Chapters are to be congratulated on providing excellent proceedings.
It was pleasing to see so many invited experts from all over the world.
Many Chapters used the Science Week Meeting to hold their AGM’s and Annual Dinners.
A Council initiative to latchkey Science Week with Plenary Sessions continues to be popular, these sessions concentrating on the Producing Excellent College Examinations & Training Programs of Excellence.
Happy Hour was once again held in the Stingray Lounge and provided the opportunity for all delegates to interact and reinforce the intellectual feeling.
The College Awards Dinner on Saturday evening – always a sell-out – was a fitting finale to the scholasticism of the week.
Twenty Two industry representatives (our most ever) joined us this year and most expressed that they benefited from the exposure to the delegates, even though our huge numbers made it impossible to conduct all the catering functions in the exhibition area.
The Industry sponsorship prizes of iPads were won by Drs Michelle Gray & Geoffrey Gibbons. In addition, Dr Magnus Dyer won the Investec award (Johnny Walker Blue package), Dr Melanie Irvine & Rob McMaster won Bova’s giant Toblerone chocolates, Dr Andrew Jacotini was the recipient of Thermo-Fisher’s surgical package, and Dr Elizabeth ? (SASH) won the Hill’s Nutrition prize. Rob McMaster subsequently donated his Toblerone back to the College office staff who were VERY grateful.
In addition, VIN visited us from the USA for the sixth consecutive year, providing computer and internet access for conference participants.
We are presently in the enviable situation where we have a waiting list of trade companies wishing to participate in Science Week.
The QT Gold Coast Hotel has proved to be a wonderful venue for this Annual College event, but we did stretch them to capacity again this year. Eleven separate meeting rooms were in operation on each day. Where possible the session times were coordinated to enable delegates to move between lectures.
The success of Science Week is essentially dependant on the Chapters.
In short, this was arguably Science Week’s most comprehensive meeting, featuring the best we and the wider community have to offer.
I would like to add my personal thanks to the Chapter programme coordinators who did so much to develop a programme that had such a wide appeal to College members.
Elaine Lowe continues to do an outstanding job organising the whole meeting. Elaine’s daughter Clare is a great help looking after the registration desk, and Sharon’s help on the first day of the conference is invaluable.
I look forward to a similar Chapter response in coming to the Gold Coast again next year and to make this meeting the focus of their scientific and social activities for the year.
Terry King, Science week 2013 Convenor

Welcome to Mr Kim Hudson – The new College Executive Officer
After growing up in Rockhampton I moved to Brisbane to attend Queensland University, where I graduated with Bachelors of Laws and Arts. I then worked as a barrister for both a number of state government departments and agencies – such as with the Crown Solicitor, Department of Primary Industries, Transport and Main Roads. In 2000-1 I lived in
London with my wife Debra and worked for Bexleyheath Council and the London Borough of Camden.
In 2003 I moved to the Office of Health Practitioner Registration Boards, which was responsible for registering 13 health professions in Queensland. While there I was responsible for developing strategic policies for the Boards, provided advice on professional standards matters and gave general legal assistance to the Office and the Boards. As health practitioner registration began gradually moving to a new national system, I remained with the OHPRB; managing registrations and professional standards until the Office was disbanded in July 2013.
I have three children, two cats and am interested in fine furnituremaking.

SEPTEMBER 2013
9The Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists | September 2013
We are always abuzz after science week not just because of the successful candidates (and new recruits) but also getting together amongst a milieu of great seminars and exciting AGMs! 2013 was no exception; congratulations to all who sat examinations. It is wonderful to welcome nine new members and our newest Fellow of Equine medicine Elizabeth Tee- indeed a superb effort for all the candidates, and special thanks to the hard working examiners.
Only one injury was reported and that was to our newly elected (in absentia) treasurer Gareth Trope to whom we wish a speedy recovery following his injuries sustained en route to Science Week.
This year we introduced a session of residents/researchers seminars and are looking to expand this segment of science week. We are hoping this will be a regular fixture on researchers’ calendars to give opportunities for current and future members. Please stay tuned and feel free to offer suggestions. That and other changes to science week are being canvassed for 2014 and onwards including study tips and review sessions designated to assist sitting candidates. We have been discussing greater collaboration with the EVA s activities particularly as the Bain Fallon is to be held in the Gold Coast in 2014.
For further details of Science Week proceedings and AGM minutes please refer to the chapter website which is maintained with the great work of Cristy Secombe.
Finally the topic of reciprocal rights of fellows of the ANZVS with European and American is one that continues, we are hoping to support specialists attending these overseas conferences to assist our cause. This will be an ongoing mission and we are hoping to form a working party to co-ordinate this push. As with any of our activities, we are a small and humble chapter so any offers of assistance and suggestions are greatly appreciated (and necessary for real action!!)
Feel free to browse our website for information on Science week, upcoming proceedings, examinations and news. If anyone has any news or suggestions please contact John Chopin, Gareth Trope or Charlie El-Hage we are always delighted to receive feedback (promise!).EQ

The highlight of this year’s Science Week program for the
Ophthalmology Chapter was our invited speaker Emeritus Professor
Trevor Lamb, from the Australian National University. Trevor presented
an update on phototransduction, including activation and shut-off
of the light response and light adaptation. Trevor also presented
his latest research findings into the evolution of the vertebrate eye,
photoreceptors and phototransduction.
The joint half day sessions with the Dermatology Chapter and the
Oncology Chapter were well attended, and gave the Ophthalmology
Chapter a great opportunity to share information with the other
chapters on a variety of ocular conditions. The Ophthalmology
Chapter would especially like to thank the Dermatology Chapter for
sharing their invited speaker, Professor Danny Scott. Danny treated
us to an entertaining and particularly informative presentation on
dermatological conditions of the eyelid and periocular skin.
The Ophthalmology Chapter would like to thank everyone who
attended the Ophthalmology sessions and for making the Science
Week conference a great success.

The Dentistry Chapter would like to welcome Dr Amanda
Hulands-Nave as our newest Member in Small Animal
Dentistry and Oral Surgery. We now have a combined
total of 49 members in the Small Animal and Equine
disciplines and our community continues to grow yearly.
We are pleased to report that the Chapter’s 2013 Science
Week program was a success, with a range of both
small animal and equine topics covered. Our AGM was
also held at Science Week, and provided an excellent
opportunity to outline our objectives for 2013-2014.
This year, the Chapter is pushing forward with a series of
initiatives designed to increase our presence within the
College as well as in the general veterinary community.
These initiatives include the design and implementation
of an improved chapter website and possibly cooperating
with other chapters to create a cross-discipline program
for the 2014 Science Week conference. These activities
will allow us to broaden our audience as well as interact
with other disciplines to the benefit of everyone involved.
As the Dentistry Chapter continues to grow, we also
seek to increase the pool of examiners for Membership
subjects in Small Animal and Equine Dentistry. While
the time investment and responsibilities of being an
examiner are significant, it is an excellent opportunity to
contribute towards the growth of the College, stay up-to-
date with the latest information, and work in concert with
other members of the discipline. If you are interested in
becoming an examiner in these subjects, please contact
Kevin Ng [email protected].
Keep watching this space for further updates from the
Dentistry Chapter. DEN

The 2013 surgery chapter involved three intense day with
two leading US keynote speakers. One was the founder
of the prestigous Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists, Dr Bill
Liska talking about hips and business management from
the surgeons perspective. The other was a biomedical
engineer with extensive industry expertise in joint
prostheses. The Young Speakers Program had a large
number of clinically relevant talks. We also had a ‘disasters’
afternoon where Aussie specialists discussed some of
their ‘dirty laundry’.
Next year the 2014 draft program features an intense three
day program with a focus on soft tissue surgery of the
abdomen. We will look at challenging liver, biliary, pancreatic,
urinary procedures as well as hernias, shunts, peritonitis,
gastrointestinal surgery, prostates, pyometrons and more
The chapter executive will deliver a worthwhile program so
please consider saving the date for what is going to be a
practical conference for vets at all levels of practice.

College Science Week 2013: The Radiology Chapter enjoyed a very successful CSW 2013. Dr Erik Wisner from the University of California Davis presented in the joint Equine and Radiology sessions, Small Animal Medicine ECC and Radiology sessions and in the Radiology sessions. His presentations were very well received and it is great to see the Radiology Chapter growing.
Membership Examinations 2013: The Radiology Chapter wishes to congratulate Dr Penny Dow on successful completion of the Membership examinations and welcomes her to the Chapter.
Membership Examinations 2014: ANNOUNCING NEW SPLIT STREAMS IN MEMBERSHIP EXAMINATIONS.
The Radiology Chapter is excited to be moving towards a new era with the splitting of the Radiology membership examinations into Small and Large Animal streams. Next year Membership candidates will be able to select the stream that best reflects their area of interest and experience. This move has been made in response to feedback from both members and the wider veterinary community. The chapter feels that the streams reflect modern veterinary practice in which species-specific practitioners are becoming more common, with a reduction in the number of true mixed animal practitioners even in the rural setting. The subject guidelines have been expanded to include knowledge and skills in ultrasound in addition to radiography and radiology. We hope the division into Small and Large Animal streams will increase the appeal of the Radiology Membership qualification to a wider cross-section of the veterinary community, and encourage you to consider undertaking examinations in one of these areas. Please refer to the College Website for more details and subject guidelines http://www.anzcvs.org.au/info/membership/subject_guidelines/default.asp.
Veterinarians interested in pursuing the Fellowship qualification for Radiology may sit membership in either of the two streams.
