1. Welcome Note Dear media representatives, Welcome to adidas ROCKSTARS 2012! We are thrilled to host the second edition of our boulder invitational contest in Stuttgart’s beautiful Porsche-Arena, one of the most modern sports arenas in Europe. This year’s event sees 70 top class athletes from 20 different countries, including four of the reigning world championship medallists and 13 of the top 10 men and women in the current boulder world ranking. So you can look forward to a top-notch competiton. When we first came up with the idea for adidas ROCKSTARS, nearly every single athlete we talked to mentioned that the best competitions are the ones with a great atmosphere and good music. That input encouraged us to implement our idea of combining rock climbing with rock music live on stage. This year, the Swiss rock band Sideburn will accompany the final of the top 6 men and women live. However, this weekend does not only see professional bouldering athletes in the spotlight. Many talented and aspiring amateur climbers from 8 different countries have signed up for the ”GORE-TEX Be a Rockstar“ contest to win a wild card for the pro competition. Six of them will be in the limelight during the “Build your Boulder” final on Saturday afternoon, when they share the stage with climbing celebrities and the Beatbox Battle Allstars. With the adidas ROCKSTARS Media Guide we would like to provide you with all the necessary background information you need for your report. 4. adidas ROCKSTARS 4.1 General Information adidas ROCKSTARS at the Porsche-Arena in Stuttgart is a top-class invitational competition for the world’s best bouldering athletes. The event uniquely combines elite sports with live music turning a climbing competition into a true „rock show“. Nearly everyone has experienced the motivating power of music over our body and soul. Music can release emotions within seconds; the right beat encourages us to tap our feet or clap our hands; a familiar tune invites us to sing along. Music drives us and makes emotional moments unforgettable. Sport and music are closely connected – even in sports climbing. It is no secret that many bouldering athletes name their routes after songs they listen to when mastering a project. Music is also an integral part of a good sports event, because it puts heroes in the spotlight, creates excitement and entertains the crowds. Intoxicating music and a great atmosphere encourage athletes to compete at their physical best.

adidas ROCKSTARS creatively picks up this connection between sport and music. In order to celebrate the heroes of the international bouldering community like „rock stars“ the organisers transform the climbing competition into an elaborately staged show with live music. Several music acts will perform throughout the day. The Swiss rock band Sideburn has the most challenging job, as they will accompany the adidas ROCKSTARS final of the top 6 men and women live on Saturday evening and they have to adjust their music program to the competition flow. Not an easy task for a band, which is used to take center stage. But with 20 years of experience under their belt, Sideburn are looking forward to the new challenge: to create the intoxicating musical setting for an outstanding performance on artificial rock, stimulate the crowds during the final, and involve them in the show.

Invitational Competition The stand-alone competition is geared to the top bouldering athletes of the IFSC world ranking (International Federation of Sport Climbing). Seventy athletes from 20 different countries (40 men and 30 women) have been invited to Stuttgart. 20 men and 20 women can qualify on Friday for the semifinal on Saturday. In the qualification the athletes have a window of four minutes and in the semifinal of five minutes on each of four different boulders.

The top 6 men and women advance to the final on Saturday evening. The finalists first climb on two boulders, one after another. Then the top three advance to the next round, in which they compete on a third boulder problem for the superfinal.

In the superfinal, the two best men and women compete in direct comparison on a so-called “super boulder”, which was specifically created for the event. They climb simultaneously an identical route on two sides of the same boulder. In the superfinal it’s not sufficient to hold the top grip for three seconds like in the previous rounds. As it is custom when bouldering outdoors on natural rock, the athletes must stand with both feet on top of the boulder block and touch a buzzer, which will determine the winner in case of a hairbreadth finish.

In this thrilling duel the two superfinalists need both, excellent skills and good nerves. Although the climbers cannot see each other, the beat of the live band and the cheers of the crowds will reflect what is happening on the other side. The person who first stands upright on the super boulder is the merited adidas ROCKSTAR 2012 and wins 4000 Euros. World-class field lined up for 2012

The start list of this year’s event reads like the who's who in bouldering: the field includes last year's ROCKSTARS winner and Boulder World Champion 2007/2011 Dmitry Sharafutdinov (RUS), the two time overall Boulder World Cup winner Akiyo Noguchi (JAP), the current leader of the Boulder World Cup Rustam Gelmanov (RUS), the reigning Climbing World Champion Combined Sasha DiGiulian (USA), the six time American Boulder Champion Alex Puccio (USA), the French Champion 2010 and fourth in the 2011 World Cup overall Mélissa Le Nevé (FRA), Guillaume Glairon Mondet (FRA) who is currently fourth in the IFSC world ranking, the American Boulder Champion 2011 Alex David Johnson (USA), as well as the top German bouldering athletes Juliane Wurm (German Champion, European Silver Medallist 2010, 3rd BCW Vail 2012), Jonas Baumann (1st BWC Vail 2009), Jan Hojer (3rd BWC Vail 2012) and Mathias Conrad (7th BWC Sheffield 2011). Shooting star Shauna Coxsey (GBR), currently second in the World Cup overall ranking, had to withdraw last minute due to a fracture of the leg.

The level of performance in the Boulder World Cup has rarely been higher than this year, so the spectators can look forward to a thrilling competition. Service to athletes

Service to the athlete is the core philosophy of adidas at every event they organise or support. “For us athletes always take centre stage”, says Axel Burkhardt, head of Olympic Sports, Cycling and Outdoor at adidas Global Sports Marketing. “Only if the athletes feel comfortable they can surpass themselves. That’s why we do a few things differently. Rather than an isolation zone we created an Athlete Lounge backstage, i.e. a chill zone with recovery area, a big warm-up wall, sports nutrition and athlete catering. Before and after the competition the athletes can enjoy complimentary massages, physiotherapy and sport medical consulting at our Reload Centre. The better they feel the better they will perform and that makes the competiton more exciting for everyone.”

4.2 Prize Money The 20,000 EUR prize purse splits up as follows

4.3 Regulations* * This is just an abstract of the most important rules. For the complete body of regulations please go to adidas-rockstars.com General The boulder competition adidas ROCKSTARS consists of

• a qualification • a semifinal • a final • and a superfinal

The judge for each boulder problem is termed as

• a Boulder Referee, who reports to the Head Referee.

Each boulder includes a clear and defined starting point from which all attempts must be started.

• This starting point consists of a clearly defined position for both hands and for one foot or both feet.

• The starting point is for all boulder problems identically marked. Each boulder problem is equipped with a “zone” hold, i.e. holding of a specific handle for extra points (even without completing the problem).

• The Chief Route Setter determines the exact position of this hold. • The marking of this hold is clearly highlighted and differs from the marking of

the starting position. • The marking of this hold is identical for all boulder problems. • The zone bonus is also awarded once a competitor has successfully climbed

the boulder without reaching the zone hold. A boulder problem is counted as “top“ once the competitor has reached the designated top hold with both hands holding it for at least 3 seconds. This position

needs to be confirmed by the respective Boulder Referee with a clear “OK“ and by raising the official yellow card. The competition area includes the

• athletes lounge (incl. transit zone). • the competition arena (incl. observation zone).

The competition is open for women and men alike. Equipment Athletes are only allowed to compete in the following equipment:

• climbing shoes • sports top • sports pants • chalk bag (dry and liquid magnesia)

Boulder Wall The boulder wall is only open for bouldering

• once the Boulder Referee has explained the problem to the competitor in advance.

• the competitor is allowed to use the designated holds for his/her attempt as long as not marked otherwise.

• screw holes within the boulder wall are prohibited for holding but permitted for stepping.

• as long as the side edges of the boulder wall are not used except it has been specifically allowed.

Artificial aids are prohibited. Sections of the wall like holds or special features, that are not allowed to use, need to be marked with a continuous and clear black marking. Competition Registration and Preparation All competitors have to register in the lounge no later than the time specified by the Head Referee and published/announced by the organizer. After having received an official instruction to leave the lounge/ transit area and proceed to the competition arena competitors are not allowed to be accompanied by any other person other than an authorised official. Each competitor has to be ready to leave the lounge/ transit area and enter the competition arena, when instructed to do so. Any delay in this regard leads to a warning. Any further delay might lead to disqualification.

Procedure During the qualification (40+x men and 30+x women are permitted) and semifinal (20 men and 20 women + 2 Wildcards) round each competitor has to attempt the four boulder problems in a given order. After each boulder, the competitor gets a recreational break of 4 minutes during qualification and 5 minutes during the semifinal. During the final round (6 men and 6 women) the boulder problems also have to be attempted in a given order and with a rotation period of 4+ minutes. The athlete is allowed to make her/his last attempt by finishing her/his 5th minute. During the final round, the 6 finalists climb two different boulders. The best 3 finalists of this round fight on a third boulder problem for the super final. The start and finish of each rotation period are announced by

• a clear and acoustic sound • the emcee • the starting of the stopwatch

Within the superfinal the last 2 finalists (men and women separately) compete simultaneously at the same boulder (super boulder) climbing identical routes. The athlete who makes it first to the top wins the title. The boulder is counted as “top“ once the competitor has reached a standing position on top of the boulder and hits the buzzer. This position needs to be confirmed by the respective Boulder Referee with a clear “OK“ and by raising the yellow referee card. Before a competitor starts his/her attempt, all holds and steps have to be cleaned by the Boulder Referee or his assistant. The competitor is allowed to ask for a specific cleaning prior to his/her attempt. Only cleaning materials provided by the organizer may be used during the competition. The athlete may also clean holds and steps him/herself. An attempt is regarded as started and counted

• once both feet have left the ground from the starting position. • once hands and feet have touched other holds than the starting holds. • by adding of markings and signs.

An attempt is regarded as completed once

• the boulder problem has been successfully topped as stated in paragraph 1.5. • the competitor has touched the ground with any of his body parts. • the competitor has not completed his/her attempts within the rotation period. • the competitor has not started as demonstrated by the Boulder Referee. • the competitor has used any part of the wall that is not open for bouldering.

In case of breaching the rules the competitor has to stop the competition and leave the competition arena. The organizer reserves the right to make any changes for the good of the athletes and the event. In case of undertaking changes, the organizer will announce them in advance. Points System After each boulder round, the competitors are rated according to the following criteria in the exact given order:

• number of tops reached. • number of attempts reaching that top. • number of zone holds (bonus) reached. • number of attempts reaching these zone holds.

In case several competitors are ranked among the top three after the final round a tie is carried out complying with the following rules:

• Each competitor has only one attempt according to the same starting order as in the final round.

• A specific boulder time is defined. • This boulder attempt has to start within 40 seconds. • If no finalist has reached the top and the results remain unchanged another

attempt is conducted until the finalists are separated with maximum of 5 attempts.

In case both finalists reach the top at the same time during the superfinal, both athletes are ranked first, considered as equally strong and the prize/ prize money is equally divided. 4.4 Head Referee adidas ROCKSTARS head referee Johannes Altner (GER) started climbing at the age of 12 and has experienced the sport from various angles in the past 32 years of his climbing career: as competition climber, as route setter on national level, as climbing coach and adventure educator, and since 2000 also as referee. In 2005 Hannes started working at international competitions and since 2008 he is managing the referee team at World Cup events as head referee. His preference are boulder comps, because „there is always such a familiar atmosphere despite being a highly professional elite sport. The athletes are not opponents but friends, who get on well no matter where they are from.“ His aim as head referee is to facilitate a fair, good and enjoyable competition for the athletes.

5. GORE-TEX Be a Rockstar Amateur Contest GORE-TEX Be a Rockstar is a stepping-stone for enthusiastic amateurs aged 16 and over, who would like to compete once with the world’s best bouldering athletes, as the winners of the qualification receive a wildcard for the adidas ROCKSTARS pro competition and enter the semi final on Saturday afternoon. There they compete alongside the top stars of the international bouldering community for a place in the final. In addition, the top three men and women of the amateur comp spend one day in the limelight in their very own final: a “Build your Boulder” contest.

A total of 100 athletes (men and women) are permitted to the GORE-TEX Be a Rockstar contest. They compete in a jam session format, that means they must climb 8 different boulder problems in a random order within a given time frame.

On Saturday afternoon, the top three men and women of the qualification battle it out in a Build your Boulder format. Here the finalists form a team of two with a top athlete (Beat Kammerlander, Alex Luger, Bernd Zangerl, Barbara Zangerl, Mayan Smith-Gobat) drawn by lot. As a team they have one hour to set their own route. In order to claim victory the finalists need creativity, speed, and self-evaluation, because only by topping their own boulder problem they have a chance to win.

Each finalist must climb all three self-built problems as well as a fourth boulder set by the chief route setter. The competitor who tops the most boulders in the end claims the GORE-TEX Be a Rockstar crown.

The two nine meter wide boulder walls of Italian manufacturer Sintroc have been built specifically for the competition, just like the super boulder, which was created for the inaugural event last year. Thus none of the athletes have an advantage in terms of experience. Set-up of the mobile climbing wall started one week prior to the event.

7. Route Setters The quality of the routes is vital for a good competition. After all, adidas ROCKSTARS wants to demonstrate the skills of the international boulder elite. At the same time the route setters try to live up to the interests of spectators and the media. That asks for instinct feel. Boulders have to be set in a fair way with equal opportunities for all athletes. At the same time they should severely test the skills of the competitor: flexibility, strength, endurance, creativity, orientation. In an ideal case only one athlete masters the most difficult problem. But if the boulders are too tough, it could backfire. This is when many years of competition and route setting experience come into play. Reinhard Fichtinger, better known as "Reini", leads the quartet as chief route setter. The 37-year-old started climbing over 20 years ago and was leading the Austrian competition ranking for a long time together with Kilian Fischhuber. Today he is an instructor for Austrian route setters. Reini set his first routes in his local climbing gym in Innsbruck, when it was first built. In 2001 he set his first competition. Since then he has been working hard for his well-deserved reputation as a route setter, which proceeds him in Austria and worldwide. His motivation results from the constant need for new training routes. His philosophy when setting routes is that they must not only be interesting for climbers, but also for spectators. He gets around much and loves listening to “eich dodl gib i gas“ by Austrofed, while climbing and working. He is a down to earth person, who enjoys hanging out with his mates in a boulder gym and pursues his passion - CLIMBING! Laurent Laporte or "Larry" from France has more than 20 years of experience in route setting. He can’t really remember how he got into building boulders, but he knows very well why he's still passionately doing it: he loves being creative. He enjoys trying the boulder himself, the tension during the competition and the relief afterwards. Laurent has already set four world championships and diverse world cup routes. To the frenchman each contest is a new challenge. In his opinion the biggest difficulty to set a good route is to play with the rhythm, always searching for new concepts to be able to screw a good show. In his spare time Larry carves climbing holds, listens to Nirvana and AC/DC or just surfs on the wave of his life. Matthias Woitzuck is the second Austrian in the team. The Viennese has been setting routes for seven years now, also likes to be creative and to express himself through climbing. Matthias enjoys meeting up with other route setters to share different styles. His most important route setting project to date was the world cup in Vienna, where he gained a lot of experience. What matters most in competitions in his opinion, is to set routes that are enjoyable but also challenging enough for the athletes and entertain the crowds, of course. Matthias is a full-blooded rocker and listens to “Rage against the machine“. When he’s not climbing in the gym you might find him outside skydiving or speedflying.

Chris Danielson has been a chief route setter for national competitions for nearly 10 years and the leading American route setter for the IFSC Boulder and Lead World Cups in the US. Since 2006, he has developed a national route setting program and is the primary instructor for the US federation. Chris began climbing and route setting almost 20 years ago in his home state of New York and quickly became obsessed with bouldering after a first trip to Hueco Tanks. Playing with movement is a never-ending passion and the lens through which he thinks about and approaches climbing. With graduate studies in philosophy, Chris takes both an analytical and artistic approach to route setting, looking to always better understand climbing mechanics and build inspiring sequences. When not helping to set up competitions, Chris is an independent consultant for climbing wall businesses and representative for top climbing brands in North America, through his company Thread Climbing. 8. SIDEBURN With a rich 20-year history, Swiss quintet Sideburn knows the power of rock well enough. They’ve been there, done that, and are possibly, the best-kept secret in rock'n'roll. So it's no surprise that their song “Six feet under” was picked by 20th Century Fox Studios to be featured in an episode of the Fox Network TV show “24” with Kiefer Sutherland, or that they opened for some of the biggest acts in the industry (e.g. Def Leppard, Kiss, Krokus, Gotthard, Dio, Doro, Motörhead, Thin Lizzy, Uriah Heep, Meat Loaf and lots more). The name "Sideburn," in fact, is also admittedly rooted in rock tradition; it stems from the facial adornment of none other than Elvis Presley and it was chosen „because it sounded so rock and roll."

Sideburn create that classic rock sound (a mix of AC/DC and ZZ Top) that is guaranteed to make you pump up the volume, dust off that air-guitar, tap your feet and most importantly, push the climbers to grow beyond their limits. Sideburn will play live during the final of the top 6 men and women. The Swiss band even wrote and recorded a special theme song with climbing lyrics for adidas ROCKSTARS 2012.

THE BETH EDGES Everyone knows what it is like to be dumped; it sure doesn’t feel good. Not getting the woman… is even worse. It is the bigheaded memories of what could have been which remain. What should you do, how do you continue life, how should you get over it? Should you write her a song? Nope. It’s better to name a whole band for the non-girlfriend to keep her very close. That’s how the Austrian girl Elisabeth Ecker became THE BETH EDGES . Youth is wasted on the young? You must be joking! It’s really remarkable what type of music those young guys are producing on their first singles "time", "i guess" and "work things out" (VÖ Acute Music) and even more so when you put them on a stage. You could think this band has already played on each big stage across the Atlantic Ocean and the English Channel.The members themselves are rather cool with that. “Writing good songs, being a tight band and ideally giving the audience what it wants, but with pleasure” says the quartet unpretentiously. Influenced by many great acts of the current Indie and guitar hype the band, which has been performing for one year now, produces catchy tunes through a signature combination of salacious four-to-the-floor beats, retro guitars and easy-going vocals. Sure, they have been listening closely to Strokes songs just as they know how to perform like current Britpop bands. Anyway, they are a world away from copying. That stuff is quite refreshing, yeah.In the 14 new songs of their new second album „Blank Coins, Round Dice“ (released on May 4th, 2012) the band's experience of the past two exciting and formative years is reflected, even though Tobias Grünzweil protests against a too autobiographic interpretation of his lyrics. As the title says, things are moving, pending, every single moment.To express this moment as honest and pure as possible, the band decided, with producer Paul Kinski, to abdicate any technical nick-nack and to record all 14 songs of the new album completely live. Sort of oldschool: a moment, a song, a record. With respect, that's how pop music is done!

Robeat only needs a mic - because the man his own band. 23 years old, two-time runner-up at the German Beat Boxing Championships and always striving to make the fine art of oral acrobatics accessible to a large audience. DHARNI (SIN) Human beatboxer Dharni from Singapore shared the stage with many famous musicians, including MC Jin, Black Eyed Peas, Kanye West, Lady Gaga and Mariah Carey. He is the Asian pioneer in beatboxing and has established human beatboxing in Singapore. In 2005 he won the Heineken Thirst Competition in Singapore, 2011 he became Emperor of Mic Beatbox Battle Champion.

CAMERO (SUI) A man, a mouth, a band. Camero is a passionate beatboxer and noise impersonator from Eastern Switzerland. Already as a young boy he started imitating sounds and music with his mouth. Especially Michael Winslow, the popular sound imitator from the movie "Police Academy" inspired him. "Whoever can do that, is the coolest person ever," said Camero to himself . Since then, the native Colombian practices every single day and performs his own shows. In 2004 he was awarded at the first Swiss Beatbox Battle in Biel with third place, including the "Best Show 2004". In 2005 Camero took part in the first Beatbox World Championship in Leipizig in which he successfully fought himself into the quarter-finals. He is producing the beat with his larynx, and not only 'with his lips. In 2003 Camero produced his first album; meanwhile Camero ranks among the world's best beatboxers. ROXORLOOPS (BEL) RoxorLoops took second place at the Beatbox Battle World Championship 2005. He started beatboxing at the age of 17 (2001). Since every other beatboxer had a nickname, he thought he would need one too: Roxor = the one who rocks, and loops = (repeat) loop. Early on, he began to take part in Beatbox Battles. In 2004 he won the Belgian Championship, one year later he was runner-up at the World Championships. Today he is a regular jury member at Beatbox competitions and Beatbox World Championships. He already worked with some top-class a-cappella groups, like The Swingle Singers and Voces8. He also won the Blue Note Jazz Award for outstanding individual performance. RoxorLoops wrote the Belgian song for the Euro Vision Song Contest 2011, which was seen by more than 200 million people worldwide. Currently he is working closely with the group Zap Mama on a new vocal project.

Stuttgart’s Porsche-Arena opened in May 2006 celebrating its premiere with the German live TV show ‘Verstehen Sie Spaß?’.

It’s the perfect venue for a diversity of events, like handball, basketball, tennis, ice hockey, boxing, music concerts or corporate events. With a capacity of 7,500 seats, the Porsche-Arena is a true “quick-change genius” and offers boundless possibilities. The Porsche-Arena was a cauldron for the Handball World Championship matches. It’s where women tennis players have had to play on ice. Obviously not directly, but the permanently installed frozen surface makes it easy to stage ice hockey matches and shows like Holiday on Ice. Depending on the event, different floors can be laid in the shortest possible time.

10. Glossary

Bouldering Is a style of rock climbing undertaken without a rope and normally limited to very short climbs over a crash pad (called a bouldering mat) so that a fall will not result in serious injury. It is typically practiced on large natural boulders or artificial boulders in gyms and outdoor urban areas. The goal of competitive bouldering is to reach a hold that is marked as ‘top’ using as few attempts as possible. Therefore bouldering emphasizes power, strength, and dynamics. Route/ Problem A route or problem is a particular sequence of a several holds and steps on a boulder wall, set by the route setter. Top One hold on the boulder wall is marked as top. To solve the boulder probem successfully the athlete must reach that specific hold and hold it for 3 seconds. Flash To successfully complete a boulder problem on the first attempt. Bonus/ Zone Each boulder problem is equipped with a “zone” hold, i.e. holding of a specific handle for extra points, even without completing the problem.

Deadpoint The Deadpoint is basically a controlled dynamic move where you use momentum to gain a higher handhold. In a deadpoint you still maintain at least one or two points of contact with the rock. Dyno The Dyno is similiar to a deadpoint except you leave contact with the rock while making a lunge for a higher hold. Sloper Climbers must use an open hand (like palming a basketball) to grab on to these holds that have little to no difference in surface texture. That makes it pretty difficult to climb that specific hold. Pinchers You grab that hold with your fingers and thumb, i.e. you must pinch it to hold on. Crimp(er)s A hold which is only just big enough to be grasped with the tips of the fingers. Foot hook A climbing technique involving hooking a heel or toe against a hold in order to balance or to provide additional support. Speed (competitive climbing) The goal of speed climbing is to climb a route as fast as possible. In each round two athletes are climbing identical routes next to each other. After a short brake they switch sides and climb again. The faster athlete advances to the next round. Lead (competitive climbing) Climbing discipline undertaken with a rope. The athletes have to climb a challenging route of about 15 - 20 meters height on-sight (with no prior practice). The maximum height is valuated. Athletes are allowed to study the routes from the bottom a few minutes before the competition starts. Transit Zone After his first climbing attempt the athlete must return to the transit zone, where he prepares himself for the next round. From there it is not possible to see the boulder wall or other athletes during their climb to avoid unfair advantage. IFSC The International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) is the international governing body for the sport of competitive climbing, which consists of the disciplines lead climbing, speed climbing, and bouldering.
