Welcome to Defiance, OhioDefiance is a micro-politan

community with great history and a matching spirit. Community members are friendly, down to earth, enjoy family and are dedicated to the solid mid-western work ethic.

The city enjoys a peaceful setting. The historic Maumee and Auglaize Rivers flow through the community, and where they junction, the mighty Fort Defiance once stood. Today, the river banks offer scenic views and their waters provide exciting recreation.

Defiance is an energized community that continues to be enhanced. Defiance is the County Seat for Defiance County and the regional center for a six-county area. Government and business leaders work together to set goals to help ensure a prosperous future for the community of Defiance.

Those who reside in Defiance take great pride in their community. Their children attend excellent public and private schools, and many continue their education at highly rated local technical and academic colleges.

Chamber HistoryOn January 8, 1938, the Defiance Club and the Defiance

Businessman’s Club merged to become the Defiance Chamber of Commerce. The goals then were similar to the goals today: to promote the industrial, commercial, professional, civic and general interests of the community. For 75 years, this organization has been serving the greater Defiance area as an effective community development organization.

The Chamber is a membership funded organization and is independent of all other organizations and groups. The Chamber is effective because motivated and dedicated volunteers work for the mutual benefit of the total community. The Defiance Area Chamber of Commerce touches virtually every aspect of community life and provides assistance through data research, organization, administration and leadership. The Chamber program of work involves economic development, small business assistance, legislative affairs, tourism, long range planning, beautification, business alerts, community image and much more.

The Defiance Area Chamber of Commerce is a resource center providing complete information for visitors, newcomers, business prospects and clients, and provides current demographic information about the area, its assets and benefits. The Chamber also works closely with the Defiance County Economic Development office and the Defiance Development and Visitors Bureau.

Looking to the future, the Chamber is playing a large role in the development of future leaders in our community, working with local educators to provide a quality work force and is providing a strong voice in legislative matters. The lives of Native American chiefs, French missionaries, British military leaders, and an American general are woven into the rich tapestry of Defiance history.

Between 1672 and 1712, French missionaries wandered among the Native American tribes who lived in the area. Later, the British sent envoys to the Native Americans in the Maumee Valley to incite them to harass U.S. settlers. In 1793, the greatest Council of all the Native American tribes in North America occurred at the long standing Native American trading center which the French called Grand Glaize. It was located at the confluence of the Maumee and Auglaize Rivers, site of the city Defiance. The chiefs of the Miamis, Shawnees, Wyandots, Senecas, Ottawas, Delawares, Kickapoos, Pottawatomies, Chippewas, Iroquois, and Mohawks were present at the Council.

Defiance is named for Fort Defiance, constructed in 1794 by General “Mad” Anthony Wayne, who was sent to subdue the Native Americans and end British influence in the area. It was the strongest fortification he had built during his campaigns against the Native Americans. Wayne is reported to have said: “I defy the English, the Native Americans, and all the devils in Hell to take it.” In response, General Scott replied, “Then call it Fort Defiance.”

Wayne went on to defeat the Native Americans at the Battle of Fallen Timbers, and in 1796 Fort Defiance was abandoned. In the peace treaty of 1795, and a series of ensuing treaties, the Native Americans yielded their Ohio lands to settlement.

From its earliest days, Defiance has been a hub for the shipping and receiving of goods. Whether it was early supplies passing through Fort Winchester or goods being transferred on the Miami-Wabash or Erie canals that ran through the community, transportation has played a major role in our development. In later years, the addition of several railways that travelled through Defiance helped to facilitate the industrial growth that continues to support the city today.

Defiance applied for and received Main Street Designation in 2008 as a testament to the community’s desire to preserve our rich history. Organizations like Historic Homes, Defiance Genealogy, Defiance Historical Society and the Andrew L. Tuttle Memorial Museum all work toward the common goal of retaining our history for future generations.

Defiance is located in the heart of the Mid-west, offering overnight access to your major city markets from Chicago to Pittsburgh, Detroit to Cincinnati. It is conveniently lo-cated within a 45 minute drive of both Toledo, Ohio and Fort Wayne, Indiana. Defiance area features a wide range of buildings and ready-to-build sites for development.

The city of Defiance features four inter-changes with new U.S. Route 24, the fastest, most efficient highway route connecting Fort Wayne and Toledo. Also intersecting the city are State Routes 18, 15, 66, 111 and 281. U.S. 127 and State Route 18 intersect in the Village of Sherwood and State Routes 18, 49, and 2 pass through the Village of Hicksville.

The Ohio Turnpike (I-80/I-90) spans the state east to west and is less than twenty miles from the City of Defiance and the Village of Hicksville. Dual rail-served sites on the CSX dual mainline route from Chicago to the East coast ports or on the Napoleon, Defiance & Western Railway with connection to NS Railroad, offer low-cost transportation advantages for heavy industry or global market distribution centers. The Port of Toledo, located on Lake Erie, is less than 50 miles away from the City of Defiance.

Toledo Express and Fort Wayne International Airports, served by several national and international airlines, are located within an hour’s drive from Defiance County. The Defiance County Memorial Airport features a 4,200-foot PLASI lighted runway with instrument approach, and provides facilities for corporate and private aircraft.

Business & Industry Defiance’s success as a regional supplier of quality industrial jobs stems from several factors. The most basic factor could be the strong Midwest-ern work ethic possessed by many Defiance residents. A strong educa-tional system trains Defiance citizens from grade school through college as they prepare to enter the workforce.

Defiance County has a work force of over 20,000 and attracts employ-ees from the entire region. The Defiance area hosts a variety of manu-facturing firms and agri-business companies, many of which are interna-tionally known.

The largest employer in Defiance, General Motors Powertrain, has approximately 1,400 employees. This modern aluminum castings and modular foundry produces quality castings for the automotive industry. Other major manufactures include Johns Manville, which employs more than 650 persons and operates two plants in Defiance producing fiber-glass insulation and molded products, and Defiance Metal Products and Defiance Stamping Co., which produce parts for the trucking industry. The list of Defiance manufactured products goes on: robotics, metal stamping and fabrication, electrical control systems, metal component cabinets, and rebuilt engines.

The Defiance County Economic Development office works closely with the private and public sectors to enhance the retention and ex-pansion of jobs in the area. The office is funded through the Defiance County Community Improvement Corporation (CIC) and is available for issuance of industrial revenue bonds, enterprise zone applications and other economic development assistance. Local schools have a proud tradition of academic excellence. The educational arena in the Defiance area offers a myriad of opportunities for all students from kindergarten through the twelfth grade including schools that have achieved a state-designated “Excellent” rating, a trade and technical school equipped to prepare the area’s emerging workforce and faith-based schools.

In the spring of 2007, construction and design began for a new elementary school in Defiance. This new building combined all of the Defiance City public elementary schools grades Pre-K to 5th into one complex building with a multitude of opportunities for the students that attend. The first day of class was held on January 5th, 2009. The new school consists of over 1200 students and 120 staff members.

The Defiance Middle School consists of grades 6, 7 and 8. All grades share the gymnasium, community auditorium and cafeteria. The middle school offers an expanded library and computer lab that students are able to utilize.

Located on the southern edge of the city is the Defiance High School. The school serves grades 9 through 12 and has a population of just over 800. Students select from 140 offerings of required and elective courses that include: English, mathematics, science, history, social science, physical education, fine arts, instrumental and vocal music, speech, foreign languages, home economics and many others.

Educational excellence can also be experienced at Central Local, Ayersville Local, Northeastern Local, Hicksville Exempted Village, Holy Cross Catholic School and St. John Lutheran School.

Calling Defiance HomeThe river banks and gently rolling landscape of the Defiance area have displayed an expanding tapestry of fine

In both the City of Defiance and Defiance County, public officials have a history of being responsive to the needs and desires of the citizens they serve.

A city charter and a strong mayor and council govern the City of Defiance while a three-member Defiance County Board of Commissioners is the policy-making and legislative body of the county.

The police force of Defiance is composed of 26 uniformed officers and 2 investigators and a K-9 unit. The force operates on a 24 hours a day with

eight patrol vehicles. An enhanced 911 emergency telephone system is currently in place. The mission of the Defi-ance Police Department is to maintain public trust by providing quality services in partnership with our community.

The fire department consists of 17 full-time and 8 part-time members. Equipment includes three engines, one 75 foot aerial ladder truck, 90 foot aerial tower and 3 rescue vehicles. Members of the department have completed at least 280 hours of training and the fire protection class is a 5. Both EMTs and paramedics in the department are trained and equipped to provide the most advanced pre-hospital care available in the nation.

The chief law-enforcement office of the county is the sheriff, who is elected to a four-year term. The road patrol division at the Defiance County Sheriff ’s Office is comprised of 9 Deputies and 3 Sergeants. Road units are respon-sible for handling all types of complaints in Defiance Counties’ 12 townships, ranging from minor traffic accidents to homicides. They are responsible for patrolling 902 miles of Federal, State, County, and Township roads in the 414 square miles that make up Defiance County.

Quality of water in a community can greatly affect the quality of life as well. Defiance takes pride in its daily waste-water treatment capacity and insures that the EPA guidelines are met. The mission and overall goal of the Water Pollution Control Division in Defiance is achieving environmental standards and providing quality and dependable

services through teamwork. Ap-proximately 8 million gallons of water is processed every day goes through a series of disinfection and stabilizing techniques to ensure its quality and essence for the people.

Northwest State Community College

Education Within Reach Conveniently located 20 minutes north of Defiance is the 77 acre campus of Northwest State Community College (NSCC). Just outside of Archbold, Ohio, Northwest State’s mission is to serve by providing access to excellent and affordable education, training and services that will improve the lives of individuals and strengthen communities.

At a Glance Northwest State Community College is a public two-year college that offers over 70 degree and certificate programs as well as non-degree training opportunities in the fields of Art and Sciences, Allied Health and Public Services, Business Technologies, Engineering Technologies and Advanced Manufacturing. NSCC faculty and staff work closely with students and area businesses to ensure that students get the training needed to advance their career. Many students also start their education at NSCC and transfer credits easily to a four-year institution to complete a bachelor’s degree, saving thousands of dollars along the way.

Distinctions The student body is made up of approximately 5,000 students, with an average age of 29. Northwest State Community College is known for providing great opportunities through hands-on learning, transferable degrees, small class sizes and flexible scheduling options. The education is affordable and very close to home offering classes at satellite locations in Bryan, Van Wert, and Whitehouse, Ohio.

History Four County Technical Institute was opened in 1969 and welcomed 165 students who were enrolled in one of eleven different degree programs offered in the areas of Business, Engineering, and General Studies. In 1989 the school almost doubled in size with the addition of the atrium and two new wings. In 1994, it became a community college. Today, Northwest State’s vision is to be an innovative leader in education and training and a first-choice institution that empowers individuals and communities to achieve a sustainable quality of life.

Small College, Big Opportunities Defiance College is a private liberal arts-based college providing outstanding academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of more than 1,000 students. Defiance College offers students the best of best worlds. Nationally Recognized Defiance College’s role as a national and innovative leader in service learning and engagement was recently recognized by the Corporation for National and Community Service which named Defiance among the top 20 schools in the nation for community service and engagement. This designation was made by naming Defiance College as a Presidential Award Finalist for the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. DC has also been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans and was selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Community Engagement Classification.

Distinctive Education Defiance College offers students a world of opportunities to enhance their academic experience, from cultural visits in world-class cities across the continent, to international trips through the DC Global program, all of which open minds to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in competition for jobs and graduate school placement.

The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students currently conduct projects in Belize and Cambodia and are exploring opportunities for partnerships in Tanzania. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; and Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization.

Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood.

New Era for DC Athletics The beautiful new 84,000-square-foot George M. Smart Athletic Center features a six-lane NCAA-ap-proved track and an expand-ed fitness center. This facility is the only one of its kind in the area and is the recreational hub of the campus. The center provides an outstanding venue for northwest Ohio athletic events.

Defiance area residents have much to be thankful for and plenty of places to praise and worship! With a wide variety of churches in the Defiance city limits and in the surrounding areas, there are many denominational and non-denominational churches to choose from. Many of the congregations have programs to serve all age groups including vacation bible school, youth groups for teens and bible studies for adults.

The residents of Defiance enjoy coming together and creating this diverse worship community. Maintaining food pantries, collecting clothing and blankets for the poor and raising funds and awareness for those who are in need are just a few of the benefits that come from having such a fruitful worshipping community.

If you are looking for outdoor recreation, you have come to the right place. Within the city limits of Defiance, you will find no less than nineteen parks. This extensive park system includes something for everyone from shelter houses and playgrounds to basketball courts, baseball diamonds and a swimming pool with a water slide.

Many of the Defiance area’s recreational and cultural opportunities have their roots in Defiance’s location at the confluence of the Auglaize and Maumee rivers. Public boat ramps at Pontiac Park and Independence Dam State Park allow for easy river access. There are several parks and historic markers along the riverbanks that exhibit beautiful scenery. The Tiffin River, also known as Bean Creek, is an excellent canoeing stream.

There has been a recent resurgence of cultural arts in the community. Along with that resurgence, new events such as Third Thursday Celebrations and the annual Lilac Festival grace the streets of the downtown. In addition, you can stroll through downtown stores filled with local art and antiques. If music or history is your passion, programming provided by the Defiance Community Cultural Council takes place year round and is sure to entertain you and your family.

The Fort Defiance Players, a community amateur theatrical group, along with Defiance College and area high schools present dramas and musical performances throughout the year that provide great entertainment for the entire family.

The Defiance Public Library is located at the west end of Fort Defiance Park and is immediately adjacent to the remains of the old fort. The original library building was constructed in 1904 as a Carnegie Library and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Today, there are two additions on either side of the original structure. The library is a cultural center for the community, providing a large collection of books, newspapers, magazines, DVD movies, CD’s and other materials.

The Defiance County Senior Services has centers in Defiance and Hicksville and provides a comfortable gathering place and a host of services and activities geared toward senior citizens. Services offered include: congregate meals at both centers, home delivered meals, grocery shopping assistance, transportation in the Defiance area, legal and notary services, assistance in the homes of seniors who are caring for a chronically ill senior who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, and many more.

The Defiance Area YMCA has become a full-service facility that meets the recreational and fitness needs of the residents of Defiance. This facility houses an

aquatic center, gymnasiums, racquetball courts, the Wooden Eye Skate Park, a spa area, and more! For more fitness and recreational opportunities, one can join the some 2,000 youth and adults participants in league baseball, softball and soccer programs sponsored by several organizations. Several nine-hole and 18-hole golf courses are located within a few miles of Defiance, including Auglaize Golf Club, Eagle Rock Golf Club and St. Mike’s Golf Course which provide excellent recreation and beautiful scenery.

the shopping possibilities. The north side of Defiance is home to the largest amount of retail with the Northtowne Mall as its anchor. The mall is the area’s only fully-enclosed, climate controlled shopping center with three major department stores and features a nine screen cinema.

In Historic Downtown Defiance, you will find a growing gathering place for artists, collectors and shoppers. Niche stores and a diverse group of restaurants round out the downtown experience. Major investments made by several financial institutions, law offices, insurance centers, fraternal organizations, restaurants, governmental offices, business office centers and others have made this area aesthetically pleasing and vibrant.

If you are still in the mood for shopping, the Kroger Plaza on the east side of Defiance and Chief Market square on the south side both offer a variety of shopping and restaurant choices.
