Our Role

Swimming Queensland is the peak body for the administration of swimming activities

in Queensland. It conducts, encourages, promotes, advances, controls and administers

swimming activities throughout the State through a number of distinct functions,

including:

Administering the rules of swimming

Registering members

Educating and developing athletes, coaches, and Technical Officials

Administering the sport’s funding

Representing Queensland swimming at the national level and with Government

PRESIDENT AND CEO’S REPORTS

We are pleased to submit to members this report on Swimming Queensland’s activities during the 2013/14 financial year.

2013 FINA World Championships

Cate Campbell and Christian Sprenger rose to the top echelon of swimming’s hierarchy at the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona, with Cate winning the Women’s 100m Freestyle and Christian taking the gold medal in the Men’s 100m Breaststroke. Both Cate and Christian had shown remarkable determination and durability to reach the pinnacle of their swimming careers, Cate overcoming years of injury and illness, while Christian patiently went about fulfilling the strong potential he had demonstrated over a decade prior to his Barcelona victory.

Cate added silver medals in the Women’s 50m Freestyle, Women’s 4 x 100m Medley Relay, and Women’s 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay. Christian also won silver medals in the Men’s 50m Breaststroke and Men’s 4 x 100m Medley Relay.

Other Queensland medallists at the Championships were Alicia Coutts, with silver medals in the Women’s 100m Butterfly, Women’s 200m Individual Medley, and Women’s 4 x 200m Freestyle, 4 x 100m Freestyle, and 4 x 100m Individual Medley relays; Emily Seebohm, with silver medals in the Women’s 100m Backstroke and Women’s 4 x 100m Individual Medley relay; Bronte Barratt, with silver medals in the Women’s 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay and 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay; and Kylie Palmer and Brittany Elmslie, with silver medals in the Women’s 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay.

2013 IPC World Championships

Queensland’s Blake Cochrane, Daniel Fox and Brenden Hall all won gold medals at the 2013 IPC World Championships in Montreal: Blake in the Men’s 100m Breaststroke SB7, in which he set a new world record; Daniel in the Men’s 200m Freestyle S14; and Brenden in the Men’s 400m Freestyle S9, breaking the world record, and Men’s 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay.

Grant Patterson claimed a silver medal in the Men’s 150m Individual Medley S3, 50m Freestyle S3 and 100m Freestyle S3; Rowan Crothers a bronze medal in the Men’s 100m Freestyle S9; and Kayla Clarke, a bronze medal in the Women’s 200m Individual Medley S14.

2013 FINA World Junior Championships

Three Queensland swimmers won gold medals at the 2013 FINA World Junior Championships in Dubai: Luke Percy, in the Boys 50m Freestyle; Alanna Bowles in the Girls 800m Freestyle; and Remy Fairweather, in the Girls 400m Freestyle.

Luke also won a silver medal in the Boys 100m Freestyle, and Alanna, a silver medal in the Girls 400m Freestyle and a bronze medal in the Girls 200m Freestyle. Shayna Jack came third in the Girls 100m Freestyle.

2014 Australian Open Championships

Queensland was once again the most successful State at the Australian Open Championships, winning both the men’s and women’s divisions. Multiple gold medallists were Mitch Larkin, Cameron McEvoy,

Christian Sprenger, Cate Campbell, Alicia Coutts, and Emily Seebohm, while in Multi Class events they were Blake Cochrane, Rowan Crothers, Daniel Fox, and Kayla Clarke, with both Daniel and Rowan setting new world records.

Once again, more than half the Australian Team selected for the 2014 Commonwealth Games comprises Queensland swimmers. They will be accompanied by six Queensland coaches.

Nine Queensland swimmers and four Queensland coaches were selected for the 2014 Para Pan Pacs Championships in Pasadena, California

St Peters Western won the S.B. Grange Trophy for Premier Club.

2014 Australian Multi Class Championships

At the 2014 Australian Multi Class Championships, Liam Schluter and Lauren Folster were each dual gold medallists. Queensland’s other gold medallist was Jenna Hohn.

2014 Australian Age Championships

Stand-out Queensland performers at the 2014 Australian Age Championships were Alanna Bowles and Elijah Winnington, who won six gold medals and five gold medals, respectively. Other winners of multiple gold medals were Regan Leong, Andrew Ryan, Josiah Wells, Minna Atherton, Megan Bogatie, Gemma Cooney, Amy Forrester, Tianni Gilmour, Chelsea Gubecka, Shayna Jack, Leah Neale, and Sarah Beale. In total, 40 Queensland swimmers won 67 individual gold medals, and Queensland swimmers claimed 202 lanes in final events.

Queensland won the W.B. Phillips Trophy as the premier State, and has won the award every year since 2000. Twenty-three Queensland coaches produced gold medallists at the Championships, which is the highest number on record. TSS Aquatics was the leading club.

2014 Australian Open Water Championships

Ten Queensland swimmers won gold medals at the 2014 Australian Open Water Championships. Jack Brazier, Emily Seymour, Lachlan Colquhoun, and Chelsea Gubecka each won two events.

2013 Australian Short Course Championships

Alicia Coutts, with five gold medals and two Commonwealth Records, was the stand-out Queensland swimmer at the 2013 Australian Short Course Championships.

2013 Queensland Championships

Major award winners at the 2013 Queensland Championships were Madeline Groves (McDonald’s Swimmer of the Meet), Minna Atherton (McDonald’s Age Group Swimmer of the Meet), Alanna Bowles (McDonald’s Country Swimmer of the Meet), and Brenden Hall (SWD Swimmer of the Meet).

A total of 2,246 swimmers competed in relays, and 1,670 in individual events. TSS Aquatics won the President’s Trophy for champion club.

Athlete and Coach Development

On the recommendation of its Mentor Coach, Paulus Wildeboer, the SQ Board approved a revamp of SQ’s athlete and coach development strategies, with the following fundamentals:

Attracting more swimmers and keeping them in the sport so they can reach their maximum individual potential at the ages that coincide with that of an Olympic finalist (statistically 22 for females and 24 for males);

Following a steady progression of training volume and intensity to ensure swimmers are consistently improving according to an individual development curve;

Making training and competition at younger ages less intense and more enjoyable;

Capitalising on the physiological and technical development windows of swimmers as they progress through the sport;

Focusing more on general athletic development, in both dry-land and swimming, and the correct development of energy systems (throughout a cycle, season, and career) to produce well-balanced athletes and to reduce risk of injury and illness;

Achieving greater technical proficiency, in all strokes and skills and across all distances;

Reviewing squad pathways and competition to ensure their alignment with long-term athlete development principles;

Structured testing and monitoring of selected swimmers to provide feedback about training and development; and

Leveraging the Queensland Government’s ongoing investment in Queensland’s premier swimming venue, the Brisbane Aquatic Centre, by developing it into a hub for elite research and for the education and development of Queensland coaches and their talented swimmers.

Sadly, Paulus passed away from prostate cancer in early May 2014. He was a visionary, and a splendid, inspirational leader. The sport of swimming was the elixir of life for Paulus. In his short time as Swimming Queensland’s Mentor Coach, he bravely challenged the contemporary approach to swim coaching in Australia. Time will show that Paulus was the catalyst for much-needed change in Australia in the identification and development of talented swimmers.

A camp conducted by SQ at Chandler during the year reflected the new system. It was attended by 53 swimmers and 14 coaches. A team of 11 swimmers, supported by four coaches, represented Queensland at the 2013 USA Championships in Irvine, California.

Other development activities included regional clinics, the NSW Open Water Swimming Championships, an Athlete Potential Workshop for 50 junior swimmers, and an SWD clinic, attended by 70 swimmers and 48 coaches.

Technical Official Development

The annual Referees Forum was attended by 22 officials. A forum was also conducted for Inspectors of Turns and Judges of Stroke, with 13 participants, while assessor training was delivered to six officials. Mentoring was provided at the Queensland Championships and the State Teams Championships in Canberra.

The Technical Sub-Committee participated in a review of the National Technical Officiating Program Modules.

Membership Development

Funding for a pilot of a new membership program developed by SQ was approved by the Swimming Australia Foundation for possible national implementation. This follows an initial limited trial of the program conducted by SQ in several clubs during the year. In 2014/15, the pilot will be carried out in Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania.

The new program is directed at:

Increasing membership;

Strengthening swimming’s revenue base through growth in membership fees, general member spend, sponsorship, and other commercial income;

Providing a platform for a mutually beneficial relationship with swim schools;

Building a stronger base for coaches to identify, nurture and develop talented swimmers; and

Providing a product tailored to suit the needs of young swimmers.

The first step in implementing the program will be to provide free membership to all children aged seven and under for the 2014/15 season. During the course of the year, other elements will be added, such as:

The use of mascots to market the program;

Members aged seven and under receiving a T-shirt to promote awareness of the program and for branding;

A web-based App to: Connect directly with children in swim schools; Promote the full swim school pathway to them and to their parents; Introduce young athletes to Swimming Australia’s CRM My Lane concepts and ultimately

recruit them into swimming clubs; and Inform, encourage and recognise our seven and under club members.

Use of elite swimmers as program ambassadors;

Construction of a “club pathway” for young members, with input from our High Performance leaders;

Recognition of clubs and coaches with a high percentage of members aged seven or under and a strong retention rate; and

The creation of club customer service standards for junior members.

Swimming membership in Australia has been declining in recent years. By investing in this new SQ initiative, Swimming Australia’s Foundation is showing real commitment to resolving what is perhaps the most critical issue facing our sport.

In 2010, Swimming Queensland produced the Growing Up In Lycra DVD as a resource to increase awareness of many issues young girls face and provide strategies to ensure sport is a positive experience for them. SQ subsequently produced the Making Champion Men DVD, which deals with the passage of young males into adulthood as they pursue their sporting dreams. Both DVDs, which have been widely acclaimed, take a nurturing approach to the balanced development of the swimmer. They are distributed by SQ to all members aged 11 years and over.

To reinforce the messages of the DVDs in a live-presentation format, SQ, supported by the Australian Swimmers Association, has been conducting Growing Up in Lycra and Making Champion Men clinics across Queensland, using current and former Australian Swim Team members as presenters. Since being launched in September last year, 850 swimmers have participated in 49 such clinics.

By relating their own personal experiences in dealing with issues like body image, self-esteem, pressure, motivation, the developing body and the developing mind, the presenters are able to forge a strong connection with our young swimmers, to reinforce the messages embedded in the DVDs, to empower them in their own individual journeys, and to have a huge influence on their lives now and beyond by helping to shape the people they will become.

Perhaps the best possible endorsement of the Growing Up In Lycra and Making Champion Men initiatives is actually coming from the swimmers delivering the clinics. Without exception, they

express regret that the programs were not in place during their formative years in the sport, and, say that if they had been, their swimming would have been more enjoyable and their accomplishments even greater.

A wide range of other well-established membership development programs were conducted around the State.

Awards

New inductees into the SQ Hall of Fame were Brenton Rickard and Lisbeth Trickett OAM.

SQ Life Membership was conferred on Margaret Squires (BNE), Ted Curtis (BNE), Susan Brown (CQ), and Lee Day (NQ). SQ Awards of Excellence were presented to Wendy Swift (BNE), Rachel Vickery (BNE), Peter Wells (BNE), Shaun Crow (BNE), Ron Tong (FNQ), Gail Smail (DD), and Jenny Smith (CQ).

Peter Crane (BNE) received the John Keppie Award for officiating excellence. Joint winners of the Susie O’Neill Award were Christian Sprenger and Cate Campbell, who also won Swimming Australia’s Swimmer of the Year, Swimmers’ Swimmer of the Year, and People’s Choice awards.

In 2013/14, Swimming Queensland lost Life Members Mrs Hazel Ferguson and Greg Lalor AM. For over three decades, Hazel greeted swimmers, spectators and coaches at the entrance gate of Swimming Queensland meets with a warm, ready smile. Greg Lalor AM served as Swimming Queensland Chairman for 26 years. He will be fondly remembered for his outstanding achievements and passion for swimming in Queensland and nationally.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I submit the Treasurer’s Annual Report, together with the audited Annual Financial Report, for the year ended 30 April 2014.

The Association recorded an operating surplus of $141,114, taking Total Accumulated Funds to $866,658, which is equivalent to 41% of annual expenditure. Total income grew to a new high of $2.239m.

The most notable changes from last year were:

A modification to accounting procedures to record funding received from third parties for the employment of coach development staff as Athlete and Coach Development income and expenditure;

A variation in the method of conducting our merchandising operations, and the $20,631 net profit therefrom being recorded under Other Income; and

A significant drop in Membership Development income due to the one-off payment in 2012/13 from Swimming Australia and the Australian Swimming Coaches and Teachers Associations relating to the Making Champion Men and Growing Up In Lycra DVDs produced by SQ.

I am pleased to report that the financial status of the Association is excellent, with a strong balance sheet and a healthy level of liquidity.

Assisting me on the Finance Sub-Committee over the past year were John Keppie (OAM), Greg Kukla and John Dove. I would like to thank each of them for their input into the good financial management of the Association.

REGIONAL REPORTS

BRISBANE SWIMMING ASSOCIATION INC

I am pleased to present the 2013/14 annual report for Brisbane Swimming. Brisbane swimmers have performed with distinction on the international stage in 2013, representing Australia at the FINA World Championships in Barcelona, the IPC World Championships in Montreal, the World University Games in Kazan and the World Junior Championships in Dubai. They have been members of the 2013 Queensland teams that travelled to California for the US Open Championships and to Canberra for the State Age Short Course Championships. Brisbane coaches and officials have also represented the region both nationally and internationally.

Five regional championship meets have been conducted: Junior and Senior Metropolitans, Short Course, Open Water and Sprint Championships, totalling over 15,000 nominations. In the national JX Program, Brisbane swimmers make up 1459 of the 3328 in Queensland. The region also conducted 22 A Grade qualifying meets throughout the season, hosted by 18 clubs over 7 weekends, for which total nominations of 30,949 were received. 14 Development meets have also been run by 13 clubs over 11 weekends, with 2523 swimmers and 9527 nominations. Brisbane also fielded teams representing the north and south side of our region in the Regional Relays at Queensland State Championships. Thanks to all the swimmers, coaches and officials who participated in these activities.

Brisbane Swimming has provided a regional development program catering for a range of levels and specialties. Our first Big Brisbane Camp, for which 38 swimmers were selected, was held over 3 days at Runaway Bay and will become an annual event on the Brisbane calendar. Three McDonald’s Development Days and one Medley/Distance Development Clinic were also held, along with an Open Water Swimming clinic at Sutton’s Beach, with Trent Grimsey inspiring and instructing 32 swimmers.

The 2013/14 season saw the introduction of Meet Mobile to make results instantly available to anyone with a mobile device. Technical Officials were provided with the new Brisbane uniform. Swimmers were invited to enter an online competition, “Why I love my club”. Five monthly winners received prizes donated by our sponsor Vorgee, with the major winner to be announced at the annual Presentation Day. For our Open Water Championships, Brisbane Swimming and Swimming Queensland combined to purchase a new finish gate. This feature, along with the use of individual transponders, greatly improved the efficiency of timing and production of results.

Brisbane Swimming is indebted to its sponsors, Vorgee and McDonald’s. We greatly appreciate their ongoing financial support as well as their regular attendance at our meets and other events. The region is also very fortunate in its band of technical officials and volunteers, who spend so many weekends of the year poolside, providing our swimmers with the opportunity for competition, whether at local club nights or the Metropolitan Championships.

Finally, I extend my thanks to the Management Committee and members of the sub-committees for their commitment to swimming in the Brisbane region.

With the 2013-2014 season drawing to a close, I present you the annual report for the Central Queensland Swimming Association.

I would like to thank some very special people on the committee for their hard work over the last season and acknowledge the commitment and personal sacrifice that these people have freely provided to swimming in our region. It is these people who have been the heart of the region and have united the Coast and the West. The coast and west should not be seen as two distinct locations within our region but one. We are one region and cooperatively working to meet the needs of our entire region should be the common thread that binds us all.

Due to my personal circumstances I will be standing down as your president. Our membership numbers this year are down which is disappointing as promoting the sport within our region has been a personal priority of mine. I first signed up with the Committee as the Publicity Officer where I was able to help the numbers of our region grow. There is more work I would like to complete for the region; however, I feel I could complete this work best by not holding a position on the committee and being free to commit to the work I personally wanted to complete.

This year saw the management committee run the CQ Sprint Championships in Rockhampton in the new FINA Certified pool. Our CQ Championships were held in Emerald in their brand new facility. Our region is very lucky to have two new FINA standard pools in the region that we can utilise for the development, growth and competition of our sport.

Development this year did not run as planned due to unavoidable circumstances yet we were still able to run a number of programs that were well received. The development planned for Emerald and Rockhampton were successful clinics with people traveling up to three hours to make the clinic in Emerald. Coaches in the west were very happy with the presented information asking for the next clinic to be longer. The swimmers in both locations were also very excited to see Olympians come to town!

Once again the Committee elected to subsidise the cost of sending our coaches to the ASCTA Conference this year. Only two coaches took advantage of our offer. It is committee’s hope that developing our coaches would in turn bring improved skills back to the home programs for the benefit of all our swimmers no matter what level they were at. These sorts of programs would not be possible without the generous support of McDonald’s and the $0.50 levy.

Two of our regions Technical officials took part in the mentoring program during State Titles. Rachel Sampson also passed her Referees exam and is now a Level 1 Referee. Congratulations Rachel!

I would also like to congratulate Alanna Bowles and her Coach Shane Kingston. Alanna not only broke a Junior World Record but was also selected to compete at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

In the season to come, the region will reap the rewards of this year’s work. The development calendar organised this year will be implemented to the benefit of swimmers, coaches, officials and parents. McDonald’s and Swimming Queensland are generously donating much time and money into the program and if continued properly will continue to assist our members for years to come.

The coming season’s calendar was released early to allow clubs to unite towards cooperative, creative solutions for what was a very conflicted calendar. I hope this works well for the region and individual clubs.

No report would be complete without thanking our officials for their support of our region’s swimmers. Our swim meets could not go ahead without their efforts.

DARLING DOWNS SWIMMING ASSOCIATION INC

It is with pleasure that I present the annual report on the activities held in this region for the 2013-14 season. The members of the Management Committee worked with members of various Sub-committees and a whole range of technical, professional and voluntary providers to implement the programs for the 2013-14 season. Planning for the upcoming season is already underway. It is a Team effort and, with new members with new ideas taking on positions within the DDRSA, the future is bright

Development

The last weekend of October has been set aside for the DDRSA development weekend each year. The JX clinic was held at Fairholme Aquatic Centre on Saturday 26 October and was a great success. DDRSA encourages our local swimmers who have achieved great results throughout their swimming to come and be a part of the weekend. This year we had Aiden Lister. Aiden spoke about training and balancing school work. She also spoke of the highs and lows in the sport of swimming. Aiden has taken a scholarship in the USA university system, where she will continue to swim. We would like to thank Aiden for her time and wish her all the best in the future.

The morning session had the swimmers break into two groups. Coach David Negus had a group doing goal setting and planning, while Coach Gail Smail had outdoor activities so the swimmers could get to know one another.

Drew McGregor from Brisbane was the visiting coach for the weekend and was very impressed, not only with the talent of the swimmers in attendance but their attitudes and manners. We had 90 swimmers from across the Darling Downs with 6 coaches in attendance. Champion Australian representative and a great ambassador for our sport, Chris Wright, gave so much of his time to the swimmers and parents. Chris spoke about being a little fellow growing up and not doing so well as an age group swimmer, but said the hard work and persistence is starting to pay off as he has started to excel in swimming over the last few years. The DDRSA would like to thank Chris and Swimming Queensland for helping make our development weekend such a success. A big thank you must go to The Fairholme Swim Club for a great lunch, also to Gail Smail, David Negus, Tim Taylor and the Fairholme College for a great venue to host our development weekend.

Sunday the 27 October was the Time and Technique meet held at Fairholme. It is a great way for younger swimmers to get feedback from a racing perspective. Also on Sunday morning a clinic for YPS and Bronze squad was well received by all swimmers who attended. Again Alice Mills spoke from the heart and had the girls’ interest for the whole 1 hour or more session. She was very true and related to them all. Chris Wright spoke with the boys and had parents saying he was great. He gave so much encouragement to the swimmers who attended. We had 17 swimmers attend the clinic held at The Glennie Aquatic Centre. The swim session lead by Coach Drew McGregor and assisted by Coaches from the Darling Downs had the swimmers concentrating on drills and the importance of doing these drills correctly. Both Chris Wright and Alice Mills stayed to advise the swimmers. The Glennie Swim Club

provided lunch for all those in attendance and we would like to thank them and The Glennie School again for providing such a great facility.

Development Clinic held at Dalby.

After a very successful Country Championships held on the 18th January, Dalby was the venue for a development clinic on the Sunday. This clinic is open to all swimmers in our region and saw 44 swimmers take part. Coach Michael Piper delivered the clinic with an up and coming Australian Junior swimmer, Aisling Scott. Aisling was very energetic and addressed the swimmers with great enthusiasm. She demonstrated warm up exercises before racing and some of the routine she goes through before training in the pool. Aisling then demonstrated in the water and helped all swimmers achieve better techniques in starts, finishes and turns. The Dalby Swim Club hosted the event and again put on a country feed for those who stayed and participated. A big thank you must go to Michael, Sue and staff from Swimwise who went out of their way to help with both the Country Championships and DDRSA Development clinic.

Regional Events

The first meet for the season was the Darling Downs Winter Short Course which was hosted by the Fairholme Club. The Fairholme club as the host for this meet are to be congratulated on a well organised and supported meet. The Association has been building up to a Short Course Meet to award DDRSA swimmers that compete over long course and short course meets during the season. The standard of this form of meet builds on clearly evident improvement over recent years. It is also pleasing to see the same award criteria are now applied to the DDRSA Short Course Champions, DDRSA Toowoomba Champions and DDRSA Country Champions.

The Country Championships which was hosted by the Dalby Club was facilitated at an excellent standard and well supported. I congratulate the Dalby club. It was very pleasing to see the number of coaches and country technical officials who supported this meet.

The Toowoomba Open has again been used for the selection of Toowoomba Champions. Along with the Regional Championships it was held in Toowoomba. With the support of all of the Toowoomba Clubs and Milne Bay Aquatic Centre these meets ran efficiently. The DDRSA would like to express our sincere thank you to Mr John Keppie OAM; President of Queensland Swimming for attending our Darling Downs Championships this year, his personal attendance is a positive key in maintaining regional committee’s contribution to swimming.

Presentation Night

The presentation night was held at the Highfields Cultural Centre on the 22nd March, 2014. The night was well represented with about 212 members attending with swimmers, parents, coaches, officials and volunteers coming together to celebrate the successes of the season. The guest speaker was Jade Neilson. From the feedback received everyone was very impressed with Jade. The common theme about the guest speakers talk was “how true”. The Association appreciates Jade for giving up her time to give us a great night. A special thankyou must also go to Jim Powers (MC).

Regional Teams

The teams selected from this Region this season were the State Relay. The Selectors Subcommittee thanks the swimmers, coaches and parents for their support. We thank Carey Crimmins Jenny Veivers, Jim Powers and Philip Van Drie for their work and dedication to make these selections work. The results were really pleasing this year with the selected teams all preforming well.

Congratulations

Garry Gibson has achieved his accreditation as Level 1 referee which is pleasing.

This season Gail Smail was awarded the Swimming Queensland award of Excellence a worthy recipient.

Kady Ibell was awarded the McDonalds Swimmer of the Year, McDonalds Volunteer was awarded to Alecia Lockhart and the Keelie Sander was awarded the President’s Trophy.

A big thank must go Swimming Queensland CEO Kevin Hasemann and the Swimming Queensland staff along with the DDRSA members who are working continuously to help in the development of swimming across the region.

FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND REGIONAL SWIMMING ASSOCIATION INC

2013/14 has been exciting, challenging, daunting and fulfilling. I believe we have once again achieved our goal of advancing swimming in Far North Queensland, shown in the way we have adapted to the ever changing needs of our sport. Nationally, the swimming community has faced several challenges and this is reflected in all levels and aspects of the sport, as does the achievements and the successes that are driving us forward to new growth and opportunity.

This year, FNQRSA has developed a new carnival calendar, held our inaugural Sprints Championships, and revisited the Coral Coast Invitational hosting a slew of old and new Olympians and hosted a number of new and development clinics. We were very fortunate to have past and present Olympians and top level coaches holding these clinics with our swimmers and coaches. In the coming year we aim to increase these opportunities and work at developing pathways not only for our swimmers but our coaches and technical officials.

Several coaches worked with Swimming Qld, introducing swimming clinics and programs to rural and remote regions such as Yarrabah, Croydon, Weipa and Hopevale. The measure of success with these activities is that we now welcome Etheridge Swimming Association to our Region and in the not so distant future, other new clubs in our more remote areas.

From high numbers of swimmers achieving at State and National level at the end of last season and the first half of this season, our region’s population changed with an exodus of senior swimmers from our Region to pursue further education and work opportunities. This was also true for some of our coaches. From a High Performance level this left our Region smaller but rewarded with growth at younger end.

Numbers have remained strong, with the SQ Dolphin program being offered to all clubs – this opportunity has been welcomed within our Region and the numbers in the 7 and under category are

growing exponentially. Hopefully we will see a high retention of these members and an increasing rate of new members through the benefits of this program.

This year I replaced Ron Tong as President and I would like to personally thank him for the work and structure he has given to our Region and am humbled to have the opportunity to continue to work for FNQ maintaining and developing all that Ron and his previous committees created. His years of dedication were recently acknowledged by his Swimming Queensland “Award of Excellence” and his commitment to swimming continues with his leadership of Swim FNQ.

A huge thanks must also be extended to our new and existing Committee Members, technical officials, coaches and club officials, whose volunteer work is unparalleled and without it, we would not have the strong sense of spirit and community that is a pillar of the region. Thank you for all that you have done and will do; your efforts are sincerely appreciated by all.

I hope that as this season ends, we will continue to see the strong development of our region, both as individuals and as a community.

Membership

During the season our Region had some 1575 registered swimmers (competitors and recreational), some 26 registered clubs, 38 coaches, 26 officials, 541 parents, 5 non- swimmers and 16 life members.

Special congratulations to Jordan Harrison (Miami) who was named Australian Institute of Sport “Discovery of the Year”.

Also a special mention must be made of the standout performance of 13 year old Elijah Winnington (PBC) who won 6 gold medals and broke 6 state records at Qld State Championships and then went on to win 5 gold medals and 2 silver medals, breaking two Australian records at National Age Championships. Congratulations to Elijah and his coach Richard Scarce.

Club Performances

Our Gold Coast clubs again showed their strength throughout the season:

Helensvale Swim Club- after winning the Go Club – Club of the Year award in 2012, again excelled by being named runner up for 2013. Congratulations to Jon and Kim Cook and their team. Helensvale also won our Regional Championships.

Miami Swimming Club came 9th in the points score at Nationals. Miami also finished in 12th place at Qld State Championships.

TSS Swim Club came 10th at Nationals and at Age Nationals won the points score.

Southport Olympic came in 9th at Qld State Titles.

Miami and Southport were both named by Swimming Australia as Podium Performance Centres for 2014 to help develop and provide world’s best training opportunities as we move toward the Commonwealth Games and the Rio Olympics. To have two of the fifteen named Centres based here on the Gold Coast is testament to our world class swimmers and coaches based here in our Region.

Regional Championships

Our Gold Coast Winter Short Course Championships held over two days in August 2013 were hosted by Nerang Swim Club with 488 competitors taking part on day one and 530 competitors on day two.

Our Gold Coast Championships held in March 2014 were hosted by the Miami Swim Club and attracted some 531 swimmers, a slight decrease on the numbers from the previous year (605).

Helensvale Swim Club took out the point’s award at our Regional Championships followed by TSS and then Miami.

Thank you to Nerang and Miami Swim Clubs for hosting those meets.

Meets

During the season 17 meets were held over some 25 days which meets included A and B Grade meets, Restricted meets and Regional Championships.

Thank you to our various clubs, and parents who assisted in the running of these meets and in particular a thanks to our tireless technical officials who turned up to each and every meet. (In addition to State, National and School meets).

Officials

We continue to have a very large group of accredited technical officials here on the Gold Coast.

To those 24 technical officials who were on pool deck at various meets throughout the season, we thank each and every one of you for the many hours of your time you have freely given to the sport of swimming, the clubs and the swimmers. For the record we “averaged”

12 technical officials on deck for each and every meet throughout the season. Many thanks to our Chief Referee Alan Smith for the tremendous effort he put in organising and co coordinating our team of officials.

Special congratulations and a big thank you must go to Michael Cox who was awarded our “Technical Official of the Year” for his tireless efforts. Michael was on pool deck for 24 of the 25 days meets were held on the Gold Coast, in addition to officiating at State and National Meets. Michael’s performance was followed closely by Alan Smith who was on deck for 23 days and Sharon Wicking 21 days.

In addition to officiating at local club meets many of our technical officials continue to officiate at school, state and national meets. The Region thanks all of our hardworking technical officials.

State Relay Team

Whilst we had 85 swimmers make themselves available, some 43 swimmers were chosen to represent the Region at the Regional Relay Events held at State Titles and we thank those swimmers for their participation. Our swimmers did extremely well coming away with some

16 medals – 8 gold, 6 silver and 2 bronze.

We would also like to acknowledge the tremendous effort put in by Kim Cook in organising the swimmers for the relay teams.

Presentation day

Our fourth Annual Presentation Day was held in June 2014. Throughout the season points are awarded to swimmers based on number of criteria (including participation in Regional Relay teams at State and participation in our Regional Championships (winter and summer). Swimmers received awards of cash payments, trophies and goods from our sponsor McDonalds in recognition of their achievements throughout the season.

The President’s Award was this year given to Grayson Bell (TSS) and the Rising Star Award was given to Elijah Winnington (PBC). Both swimmers excelled in their performances throughout the year and we congratulate both Grayson and Elijah as well as all swimmers and Clubs who received awards on the day.

We also extend our gratitude to our guest speaker Olympic medallist Melanie Schlanger who addressed our young swimmers about her experiences as a swimmer.

Swimming Queensland

As President of Swimming Gold Coast I would like to take this opportunity to also thank Swimming Queensland’s, CEO Kevin Hasemann and President John Keppie and their staff for their help and guidance throughout the season.

Kevin, John and the SQ staff have always made themselves available to The Region and provided much needed advice and guidance throughout the season.

Swimming Gold Coast Management Committee

A swimming committee consists of people who freely volunteer their time and energy. Things don’t just happen, they are organised and planned. Our Region is very privileged to have the services of three very dedicated and hardworking ladies who put in hours upon hours of work behind the scenes planning and organising all of our activities here on the Gold Coast. A very big thank you to Di Daw (Vice President, Race Secretary and Chief Recorder), Kim Cook (Secretary) and Michelle Sabotic (Treasurer). Our committee was assisted by Cathy Usher who looked after our web site and Anne Sendon our Registrar and uniform coordinator.

The Future

Our future looks bright. We have a band of enthusiastic and motivated swimmers rising up through the ranks some of whom will definitely be the future “stars” of Australian swimming. We have a brand new world class swimming facility nearing completion at Southport. We have the Pan Pacs and the Commonwealth Games here on the Gold Coast and we have a dedicated team to take our swimmers forward into the future. It’s with great pleasure that I present this report on behalf of the Association. This past season commenced with a packed programme of events and meets. As it turned out, it was just that. Due to the ever reliable volunteers, the season was very successful in all facets.

The Region would like to thank McDonald’s Family Restaurants for their continuous ongoing financial support to swimming. All the programmes implemented would not be possible without their ongoing support.

Development

Our very popular McDonald’s N.Q. Junior Development Meets were conducted with the introduction of the inaugural meet held at Julia Creek. This Meet was well attended in both Townsville and Cannonvale. In conjunction with these Meets our Level 1 JX Development Clinics were conducted.

Level 2 JX swimmers were transported from within the Region to assemble for a one day swim Meet at Proserpine. This type of development activity was popular and successful with all swimmers and coaches. Level 3 JX were treated to Two (2) one day clinics which were conducted in both Mackay and Townsville. Swimmers and Coaches assembled in their respective districts and were put through an intensive programme of both land and pool education. Our sincere thanks goes out to SQ who supplied the guest presenters, guest swimmers, a sports science development officer, coaches and volunteers, making the clinics a huge success.

Swim Meets

Our regional Meets were well attended throughout the season. The standard of swimming is improving and increasing in numbers, indicated all is going well for our Region. This was evident with the increase in Relay participation and medal winning achievements at Swimming Queensland’s State Championships.

Our McDonald’s N.Q. Championships once again attracted similar numbers to previous Championships. North Queensland Management, Coaches and Technical Officials were excited with the positive approach that was given by all concerned. On behalf of the NQSA Management Committee, I wish to thank all those who assisted before, during and after the Championships. Mr. Michael Cox, S.Q. Board Member, attended as an observer. Our distinguished guest was very impressed with the high standard of the Meet, the swimmers, and the way the Championships were organised and conducted.

Throughout the season many of our swimmers attended International, National and State meets and represented themselves very well. Congratulations to the swimmers, parents, coaches and team managers.

Officials

Congratulations to Erin Collis who has been selected to attend the Glasgow Commonwealth Games as Australia’s Technical Official. Erin will be a FINA Starter at these Games. Once again congratulations, Erin.

The Regions Technical Officials who once again unselfishly assisted in the running of all the Meets during the season, we thank you. Some of these officials also attended International, National and State Meets to improve their knowledge of swimming and assist in raising the standard of swimming. We had two (2) officials participating in SQ Mentor Programme at the State Titles.

Awards

Life Membership of the region was awarded to Theresa Manning from the Cannonvale Club for her unselfish assistance and dedication she gives to all those who request assistance from her. Congratulations, Theresa - a most worthy recipient.

In closing I must say thank you to the President, John Keppie OAM, the SQ Board members, CEO, Kev Hasemann and all the ever reliable and friendly Staff of Swimming Queensland for all the assistance they give to the Region. This assistance all goes well in the development and progressing of swimming, not only in my region but all those across our great state of Queensland.

WIDE BAY REGIONAL SWIMMING ASSOCIATION INC.

General

Another successful year for Wide Bay Swimming, with some great achievements from our swimmers, coaches and clubs. Our Wide Bay Championships went extremely well, with fine weather and great competition. Our calendar seems to be getter fuller, with more squads and squad activities keeping all very busy.

Wide Bay Short Course Championships

Wide Bay held our Short Course Championships in August at Hervey Bay. This meet was held in conjunction with the Wide Bay Presentation Dinner. The format of a Saturday lunch-time start, then presentations in a nearby venue, concluding with the Sunday morning swimming is working well. The facilities at Hervey Bay had what we required, despite major work being conducted on their 50 metre pool. Special thanks to the Hervey Bay club with their help over this weekend.

Development Program

Our development program, offered places in our squads and camps to over 300 swimmers of varying skill levels, with many more offered places in SQ and SAL programs . Special thanks go to development officer, Michele Watson for all her work in organising all squads and camps so well with great emphasis placed on ensuring the swimmers receive new and varied skills. The JX swimmers all received their swimmer packs from Swimming Queensland via their clubs. Junior Skills clinics were held in Burnett Fraser and South Burnett. Early Achievers and Achievers attended, as a team, the Sunshine Coast qualifying meet held at Flinders in July, with the swimmers enjoying a day camp the previous day at Camp Mudjimba. All will remember the muddy obstacle course as well as the great talk by Blake about his swimming career, including the Paralympics. What a great week end, with great team spirit and swimming friendships started. The Development Squad competed at the NZ Short Course Champs in Wellington, with most getting great PB’s and some medals. The 8 and 9 year old Gold Squad and the YPS squads are also new activities that we will be including in our calendar. The Wide Bay relay teams competed very well at the State Relays. With representation in every regional relay, we were very well supported by our swimmers. Wide Bay got three firsts, five seconds, six thirds and many fourths in the 20 races. The pink cap really does stand out. With the great results and some great individual swims this is a great hit out for many of our swimmers, and we are demonstrating our ability to compete against all regions of our State.

McDonald’s Wide Bay Long Course Swimming Championship

Norville Park Swimming Complex in Bundaberg was the venue for this event. Many thanks to the Fairymead Club for their support with the setup, running of, barbeque and the packing up of this meet.

The event was a trying event for the Wide Bay committee with our restrictions with access and the amount of work put on our small committee. With organizing this event, many thanks to Michele and Bev. Many thanks to the sponsorship of McDonald’s for their age championship towels. Also to the parent help roster without the support of these many people, all goes into making these events successful.

Forums are held every quarter in Gympie, which is central in our region. The forums were well attended and informative to all, especially to new clubs and new club committee members.

We had talks from guests including Michael Sage, who was a Wide Bay junior swimmer and is now the Development Coach with Swimming Queensland. The networking at morning tea and lunch is great with many questions and problems facing clubs answered with a casual chat. The forums create an atmosphere that is nonthreatening with an emphasis on swimming and support as needed.

New Venues

Maryborough Aquatic Centre is now a great facility after its redevelopment. Hervey Bay’s 50 metre pool is getting redeveloped and with the covering of its 25 metre pool will make it a great venue in the future. Some pools were inundated and damaged in last year’s floods and to the clubs affected, hope all is now back on track with your facilities.

Clubs and Carnivals

With the many meets within our region, we have restructured our calendar to try to give swimmers many opportunities to qualify for upcoming Regional, State and National meets. The limiting factors are the work load on referees and the people doing the timing as well as pool availability. Many carnivals received great nominations and attendance from local clubs. The networking between clubs to successfully run meets and the meets offering Timing as Semi-Automatic and Automatic is great.

There will be changes this season with some meets run as club challenges, where all swimmers are swimming for club points and the emphasis will be on club spirit and gaining points for your club.

Technical Officials

Congratulations to all the people progressing around our region. With the retirement of Bill Lawrence, Dale Cox and Debbie Cox at the end of this swimming season, we are losing some great Referees, Many thanks for all your help with swimming in our region, and wish you all the best in your future.

Therefore we will be looking very closely at our carnivals as to not to overburden our referees where we have four with one Judge of Strokes helping. With the help of Dale, Debbie, Bill, Bobbi, Ray and Stan as referees and Bill Giles as a Judge of Strokes, our meets have been run very well. With Bobbi, Ray and Stan offering accreditations and the training of officials on the coast. With training days at Maryborough and Mt Creek, we are progressing to get more Technical Officials trained up. Hopefully a few more of these training days will be held in the next year. At Forums and meets we are getting more enquiries and accreditations as people want to get involved in a wonderful community sport.

With our planning/budget week end, camps and squad activities and hosting forums and meets there is a lot of hard work but a lot of fun and enjoyment achieved with our results.
