The UTEP track and field squads will open competition on Saturday, March 24 at the UTEP Springtime at Kidd Field.

Highlighting the group of Miners is Suji Adeniyan, who earned 2011 USTFCCCA All-American honorable mention in the 4x100m relay and the 4x400m relay. The senior led the men’s 4x400m relay to a fourth-place finish at the 2011 Drake Relays posting a personal-best of 3:07.81. The Nigerian native took gold in the 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay at the 2011 Conference USA Indoor Championships.

Junior Anthony Wright earned 2011 USTFCCCA All-American honorable mention in the 4x100m relay. Wright was a member of the relay squad that finished 19th at the NCAA Championships posting a time of 40.37. The junior took fourth-place in the men's 100m and 200m at the 2011 C-USA Championships.

Coming off a second-place team finish at the 2011 C-USA Cross Country Championships, the men’s distance squad will take the track led by conference champion Justice Chirchir. The senior took silver in the 1,500m at the Payton Jordan clocking in a time of 3:46.14. Chirchir crossed the finish line in fifth-place at the 2011 C-USA Outdoor Championships in the men's 1,500m posting a time of 3:46.14.

Joining Chirchir on the track is Elkana Rotich, who earned all-region honors for his performance at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Mountain Regional where he crossed the finish line with a time of 31:03 in the 10K to place 14th overall. The junior earned two gold medals at the

2011 C-USA Championships in the men's 5,000m and 10,000m with times of 14:18.96 and 30:43.73, respectively.

All-Americans Endurance Abinuwa and Risper Kimaiyo lead the women’s team of 22 scheduled to compete this outdoor season.

Abinuwa earned All-American honors last season when she finished fourth at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships registering a time of 53.06 in the 400m dash. The senior took bronze at the C-USA Outdoor Championships in the 400m dash posting a time of 53.06. Abinuwa participated in the NCAA West Preliminary in the 200m and 400m recording times of 23.94 and 54.56, respectively.

Kimaiyo comes of a successful cross country season, where she claimed five crowns, earned C-USA first team honors and finished 25th at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships recording a time of 20:12 in the 6K race. The senior was also recognized for her performance in the classroom and the community, earning C-USA Spirit of Service and C-USA All-Academic honors. Kimaiyo took silver at the C-USA Outdoor Championships in the women's 5,000m with a time of 16:48.07. The Kenyan native posted a season-best of 16:27.10 in the 5,000m at the 2011 NCAA West Preliminary.

The Miners will travel to Austin, Texas on Wednesday, March 28 to compete in Texas Relays.

After marking its 16-year milestone during the 2010-11 season, Conference USA is still going strong. From the beginning, dedication to excellence has been the league’s guiding principle and remains today a common thread for a promising future. C-USA is home to 12 nationally prominent, tradition-rich members in East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UCF and UTEP. This combination enhances men’s and women’s programs that are immersed in athletic success and academic prowess. Together, we are committed to excellence, integrity and leadership in athletics, academics and in our communities.

All C-USA institutions sponsor Division I track and field, along with several other men’s and women’s athletic programs, many of which compete regularly for NCAA Championships. C-USA sponsors competition in 20 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field) and 11 for women (basketball, cross country, golf, rowing, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball).

The league sponsors numerous academic awards, including the Commissioner’s Honor Roll and the Commissioner’s Academic Medal, indicative of outstanding achievement in the classroom.

C-USA annually awards 12 postgraduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic Award, Scholar Athletes of the Year and the Institutional Academic Excellence Award. Conference USA also added a Spirit of Service Award, recognizing student-athletes three times a year for a combination of significant community service efforts, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport.

SUCCESS ON THE PLAYING FIELDConference USA performers have achieved great success in competition, placing the league among the top conferences in the nation.

Track and Field• The league has six national champions in NCAA track and field competition.• Numerous NCAA individual and team competitors in cross country.

In addition, 55 men’s and women’s soccer teams and 30 softball teams have earned NCAA Tournament bids. 62 football teams have earned bowl bids. C-USA has sent three men’s soccer teams to the NCAA College Cup and five softball teams to the Women’s College World Series. The league one national champion in diving and numerous NCAA individual and team competitors in golf, swimming, and tennis. Overall, Conference USA teams and individuals have made more than 600 NCAA appearances.

C-USA DIGITAL NETWORKThe C-USA Digital Network will officially launch in August of 2011. Network programming will include live streaming of non-televised events, video on demand, a weekly C-USA studio show, podcasting, regular season and championship event highlights and C-USA produced feature stories. Monthly and yearly subscriptions will offer access to events offered on all 12 of the C-USA member institution’s athletic websites as well as C-USA network programming.

OUTDOOR Posted a time of 21.57 in the 200m at the NCAA West Preliminary ... ran a season-best time of 21.05 at the Conference USA Championships preliminaries qualifying for the 200m finals where he took bronze with a time of 21.47 ... took the 100m crown at the Springtime Invitational clocking in at 10.64 ... posted a season-best time of 10.36 at the Don Kirby Invitational where he finished fifth.

COACHING STAFF


Mika Laaksonen was named head coach on April 14, 2010 after serving 12 years as assistant coach under legendary coach Bob Kitchens.

During his time as assistant coach, Laaksonen coached two NCAA champions in the javelin and 22 All-Americans in the shot put, hammer and javelin.

In addition, Laaksonen has coached 30 conference champions since 1999.

In 2011, Laaksonen lead freshmen Richard Olsson to a silver finish at the Conference USA Championships in the javelin with a mark of 67.94m (222-11). Olsson advanced to the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships and finished 24th in the javelin with a mark of 64.67m (212-2).

During the 2010 outdoor season, Laaksonen directed Anna Wessman to a third-place finish in the javelin and Dimitrios Fylladitakis to fourth-place in the hammer at the NCAA Championships to earn All-America honors.

In addition, Laaksonen guided All-American Keisha Walkes to a seventh-place finish in the shot put at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

In 2007, he coached Erma Gene Evans to a runner-up finish in the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Championship, earning her All-America status, after she took gold at the conference and regional levels. Evans hit her season best of 56.45 at the conference meet.

Laaksonen coached Matti Närhi to the javelin national title in 1999, and Angeliki Tsiolakoudi to the 2000 title. Along the way, Laaksonen helped both throwers attain school records and the all-time conference marks in the javelin. Tsiolakoudi

also established a then-collegiate record in the event with a toss of 197-8 (60.26).

In 2006, he coached five Conference USA champions and one NCAA All-American. Laaksonen had Nina Schvedoff break the school record in the 20-pound weight throw (18.37; 60-3 1/4) and Evans break the Saint Lucia national record in the javelin (55.00; 180-5). His conference champions included Schvedoff (weight and hammer), Correy Harrison (discus), van der Merwe (javelin) and Evans (javelin).

In 2005, Laaksonen guided Harrison -- a walk-on -- to qualification for the NCAA Championships in the discus. Harrison was the 2005 WAC champion in the event and placed fourth at the 2005 NCAA Mountain Regional. He also worked with Schvedoff, who broke the school record in the 20-pound weight throw and won the conference title and Kaisa Kiintonen, who was the conference champion in the hammer. Both Schvedoff and Kiintonen were national qualifiers in the hammer as well.

In 2001, Laaksonen trained three more All-Americans during the outdoor season in Vesa Jäppinen (second, javelin), Vartia (fourth, hammer) and Anne-Laure Gremillet (eighth, hammer). Vartia and Jäppinen won Western Athletic Conference titles during the outdoor season. Vartia (third, hammer) and Mats Nilsson (fourth, javelin) gained All-America honors in 2000.

In his first season as a coach, he worked with All-Americans Ilmari Verho (sixth, hammer) and Tepa Reinikainen (seventh, shot put).

A former UTEP student-athlete and 1992 NCAA

hammer champion, Laaksonen primarily works with the throwers and assists with recruiting.

Laaksonen grew up in Finland and spent two years at the University of Technology in Lappeenranta, Finland, where he majored in industrial economics before transferring to UTEP. He was an instant factor as a Miner, winning the 1992 NCAA Championship in both the 35-pound weight throw indoors and the hammer throw outdoors.

Laaksonen repeated his All-American performance in 1993, placing second in the hammer at NCAA's. His throw of 244-3 (74.44) still ranks second all-time among Miner athletes. Following the completion of his eligibility at UTEP, Laaksonen competed in several competitions abroad, including the 1994 European Championships and the 1995 World Championships. While coach Laaksonen no longer throws the hammer competitively, he did finish in the top 50 in the world in 1996 and 1997, including recording a career best of 250-1 (76.22) in 1996.

For his efforts as a Miner, he was enshrined in the UTEP Track and Field Hall of Fame in April of 2005.

Laaksonen received his undergraduate degree in finance from UTEP in 1995 and his master of science in economics in July 1998.

The 1988 Olympic gold medalist, Paul Ereng became the first Kenyan to take a collegiate coaching job in the United States when he was named UTEP's cross country and distance coach on Aug. 8, 2003. Ereng was promoted to Track and Field Associate Head Coach on April 14, 2010. Now in his eight season at UTEP, Ereng has already elevated the Miners distance runners to a new level of excellence.

Ereng has trained an NCAA champion, 27 NCAA All-Americans, 73 conference champions and four NCAA regional champions. He has had five athletes named conference Athlete of the Year and six gain conference Freshman of the Year honors. He has also had two runner earn conference Newcomer of the Year honors and two C-USA Outstanding Seniors. In addition, Ereng has had 26 individuals qualify for the NCAA track and field championships and fifteen individuals qualify for the NCAA cross country championships. Following the 2006 season, Ereng was named the national Assistant Coach of the Year for distance by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Ereng has led the Miners to back-to-back Conference USA titles in cross country and has been on staff for four conference track and field titles.

In 2007, Ereng was named the C-USA Coach of the Year for the third time after leading UTEP to its third-consecutive cross country title. The Miners scored a meet record, perfect 15 points in winning the championship. UTEP won four meets during the season, setting two meet records, including one at the Lobo Invitational. Stephen Samoei earned All-America honors for the third consecutive year, by taking 20th at the NCAA Championships and was named C-USA's Athlete of the Year.

In 2007, Ereng mentored three All-Americans in the form of Fatimoh Muhammed, Elias Koech and Samoei. Koech was runner-up in the 800 while Muhammed was fourth and Samoei finished sixth.

In 2006, Samoei was the C-USA Athlete of the Year and Ng'etich was the C-USA Freshman of the Year and the C-USA Newcomer of the Year, as the squad set a conference meet record for points with 21.

Ereng had two All-Americans during the 2006 outdoor season, with C-USA Outdoor Athlete of the Year Mircea Bogdan taking second in the 3,000 steeplechase and Mutai finishing eighth in the steeplechase. Ereng's distance runners scored 87 out of 222 points, helping the Miners win the C-USA Outdoor title. Indoors he trained three All-Americans with Tanui finishing third in the 800, Koech taking seventh in the 800 and C-USA Indoor Athlete of the Year and Freshman of the Year Jenny Holmroos placing fifth in the 800. His distance runners chalked up 52.7 percent (88 of 167) of UTEP's points in winning the C-USA Indoor Championships.

In the fall of 2005, Ereng brought the UTEP men's cross country team back to the NCAA Championships for the first time in 13 years. The Miners finished 14th behind All-Americans Samoei (20th) and Ng'ojoy (22nd). Samoei was named C-USA's Runner of the Year.

UTEP advanced to the NCAA championships with a second-place finish at the NCAA Mountain Regional with Samoei (fourth), Ng'ojoy (fifth), Bogdan (ninth) and Mutai (14th) landing in the top 15.

Ereng led the Miners to their first-ever Conference USA title, scoring 23 points behind Mutai (first), Ng'ojoy (third), Samoei (fourth), Bogdan (fifth) and Joe Muñoz (10th). He was named the C-USA Coach of the Year.

In the spring of 2005, Ereng trained Bogdan to the NCAA title and Mutai to a fifth place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. His distance runners also played a major role in UTEP winning its final WAC title at the outdoor championships, scoring 93 of the Miners' 208.5 points. During the indoor season he had Adriana Pirtea win the silver in the 3,000-meter run at the NCAA Championships.

Ereng came to UTEP after working for the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) as the technical director for the development of the youth of Africa from 2001-03. While working at the IAAF High Performance Training Center in Eldoret, Kenya, he trained young men and women middle to long distance runners from various African countries.

Seventh Season at UTEP

Ereng's runners won medals in the 800, 1,500, steeplechase, 5,000 and the 10,000 at the 2001 African Junior Championships in Mauritius.

Ereng coached Janeth Jepkosgei, who won the 2002 IAAF World Junior Championship title in the 800, and also had a fifth-place finisher on the men's side.

He molded current Olympic steeplechase champion Eziekiel Kemboi, who ranked third in the world in 2003 in the steeplechase (8:02.49). Kemboi was second in the steeplechase at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester and was runner-up at the 2003 IAAF World Championships in Paris.

In cross country he trained Simrate Sultan, a top-15 female for the 2003 World Junior Cross Country Championships, and Ali Abdalla, who finished 25th at the World Cross Country Championships on a men's 4K course.

In 2002, Ereng was appointed to head the Kenya World Junior Championships team, which finished second overall.

Along with his IAAF duties, Ereng started and coached the Eldoret Track and Field club.

He is certified by the IAAF with a level two standing for coaching middle and long distance events. He has been the President of the Africa Region V Track and Field Coaches Association, founder and executive member of the Kenya Coaches Commission, president of the National Association of Kenya Olympians and secretary general of the Rift Valley Province Track and Field Association.

Over the years, Ereng has been the recipient of many awards, honors and titles. In 2004 he was inducted into the Drake Relays' Hall of Fame. In 2003 he was given the all-time top-10 achievers medal in track and field by the Atlantic Coast Conference. He received the IAAF's lifetime athletics award in 2002. He was granted Kenya's highest title of the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) in 1990. He received the Jumbo Elliott Award for demonstrating quality and leadership off and on the track in 1989. He picked up the Henry Cummings Award as Virginia's top male athlete in 1989 as well.

As an athlete, Ereng was a three-time NCAA champion, a four-time NCAA All-American, the 1988 Olympic gold medalist in Seoul, twice the World Indoor Champion and a former world record holder.

As a freshman at the University of Virginia, Ereng won the 1988 NCAA Outdoor 800 title.

He emerged on the world scene by defeating Joaquim Cruz and Moroccan Said Aoiuta in the 800 at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games to take Kenya's first-ever gold medal in the event.

At the 1989 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Budapest, Hungry, he established the world record in 1:44.84. A few days later he claimed his second NCAA indoor title in the 800 and then the NCAA outdoor crown in the spring.

Ereng lost only one 800 race during the 1989 outdoor season in 15 tries. He also had the world's fastest time of 1:43.16 during the season.

He also was fourth at the 1991 IAAF World Championships in Tokyo and was a member of the Kenya Olympic team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.

Ereng graduated from Virginia in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in religious studies with a minor in sociology and received a masters in education administration from UTEP in 2010.

A native of Eldoret, Kenya, he attended the Starehe Boys Center as a prep.

He and his wife, Fatuma, have two daughters (Jasmine & Victoria) and one son (Paul, Jr.).

Leon Settle joined the UTEP track and field coaching staff on September 1, 2010.

Settle returns to UTEP to take over sprints, hurdles and jumps responsibilities. The University of Arkansas Little Rock alum was a volunteer coach under retired head coachBob Kitchensfrom 2000-2004.

The Battle Creek, Mich., native comes to the Miners following a three-year stint with the University of New Mexico track and field program where he was the sprints, hurdles and horizontal jumps coach. Settle was part of the staff that led the Lobos' men's team to an eighth-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships and 16th in 2009. He coached UNM's first female indoor All-American Deanna Young in 2009. While at UNM, Settle worked with three All-Americans and 16 regional qualifiers; his athletes combined for 31 top-10 program all-time marks and 11 school records.

Prior to UNM, Settle spent three years as an assistant coach at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock from 2005 to 2007. During his time with the Trojans, Settle coached sprinter Chris Johnson to a sixth place in the 100m at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2005. In addition to success on the track and field, Settle's student-athletes were top performers in the classroom earning the Trojans' women's squad USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors with the nation's

top grade point average during the 2006-07 academic year. The men's team also earned all-academic team honors with a GPA that ranked 19thin the country that same year.

Settle received a B.S. in Health Education from Arkansas Little Rock in 1999 and a master in exercise science 2010.

Second Season at UTEP


Roberts comes to UTEP from the University of Alabama where he served as an assistant coach in sprints, hurdles and jumps from 2007-11.

Roberts coached All-American Trish Bartholomew to second-place finishes in the 400m dash at the NCAA Outdoor and Indoor Championships in 2007. Roberts went on to coach Bartholomew in the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 400m dash.

While at Alabama, Roberts mentored eight All-Americans, one World Championship participant, four SEC champions, nine All-SEC performers, two SEC Freshman Athletes of the Year, 22 NCAA Qualifiers and five Drake Relays Champions. Roberts has produced some of the best athletes in Alabama school history with 23 top-10 all-time marks including six school records.

At Alabama, Roberts work as a Speed Trainer and Consultant for Crimson Tide Football during the 2010-11 school year. He trained All-American and NFL first round draft choice Rolando McClain and All-American and second draft pick Javier Arenas.

Prior to Alabama, Roberts spent 10 years as an assistant coach at Iowa State University (1996-07) leading Olympian Aurelia Trywianska to the 2004 and 2008 Olypmic games in the 100 hurdles. During his time with the Cyclones, Roberts coached one World Champions finalist, three big 12 Champions and 21 All-Americans. Roberts' student-athletes registered 52 school records during his time at Iowa State.

Roberts coached for one season at Drake University, where he coached Missouri Valley Conference Champions Ian Tullberg in the decathlon and David Williams in the 110m hurdles.

Roberts worked as a strengths and conditioning coach at Ohio State (1994-95) with the Buckeye football program under head coach John Cooper. Roberts' responsibilities included working with Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George, All-Pro receiver Joey Galloway, Terry Glenn, Mike Vrabel and number one draft pick Dan Wilkinson.

Roberts, a Muscatine, Iowa native, graduated in 1991 from Midland Lutheran College with a Bachelor's degree in Education and Social Science/Coaching. While at Midland Lutheran, he qualified three times for the NAIA Track and Field Championships. He was a member of the sixth-place distance medley relay team at the 1990 National Championships earning All-American honors. Roberts set eight school records at Midland Lutheran, including the indoor and outdoor 400m dashes.

He is a Certified strength and Conditioning Specialist and is a USATF Coaching Education Levels I and II Lead Instructor. Roberts is the author of two books: Progressions for Coaching the Sprints and Progressions from Coaching the Hurdles. Roberts and his wife, Kris, are parents of two children, Courtney and Zachary.
