You won’t find another

sweeping statement about how we run

our business in the ‘greenest’ way

possible and we don’t claim to be

saving the world with a few generic

environmental policies, that would be

ridiculous, but as a company and as a

group of individuals we do realise that

we can make a difference. Waste is something that we should all

oppose, there is no gain in any form

of being wasteful, waste costs money,

stretches resources and it screams of

inefficiency and incompetence.

Here at the Wagstaff Group we hope

to set a new level of social and

environmental awareness and in doing

so we have taken a holistic approach

to encompass more than just a reuse

and recycle policy.

“Our Environmental policy is more than just a statement of good”

Our environmental policy is more than

just a statement of good intent, we

have broken it down into real

processes that we have implemented

and which will continue to develop and

grow in the future, for the good.

Some time ago we sat down and

discussed how we could run our

business in a more efficient and

effective manner, back then big

changes were made to implement

this and at the same time reduce our

carbon emissions.

The Changes:

Transportation

We outsourced our transportation to

specialist companies to take advan-

tage of the consolidation of deliver-

ies and maximisation of loads. Also

routing and scheduling vehicles helps

to minimise mileage whilst continuing

to meet customer demands across the

country.

Warehousing

We also outsourced our warehousing

operations to specialist locally

positioned companies to reduce

energy consumption by sharing and

managing furniture distribution all

under one roof.

At Wagstaff we realise, that due to the

nature of our business our carbon

emissions are relatively low.

As well as the fundamental changes

we have made to our business over

the years, we have also made a series

of small internal steps across our

company nationally, to help reduce our

environmental impact even further.

We realise that these small steps can

make a BIG difference if we all get involved.

Our Carbon FootprintSince achieving our ISO14001 status in January

2005 we have consistently managed to lower

our carbon emissions year on year. In 2005 we

benchmarked our annual carbon footprint at ap-

proximately 533 tonnes of fossil CO2.

This benchmark has been used as a guide,

enabling us to measure our performance year on

year and help drive us to seek new ways to reduce

carbon emissions. The calculation has been arrived

at, in the main, by looking at our fleet of vehicles,

kilometres travelled and applying the rate of

g/Km as provided by the Environmental Agency

with further assessments for energy usage across

our nine regional offices. (Electricity).

Our CO2 emissions have been reduced by

reducing the number of vehicles in our fleet,

running more efficient vehicles, switching to green

energy suppliers for our electricity, educating our

staff regarding the efficient running of their office

and investing in PIR lighting systems and VOIP

conference calling facilities in our new London

showroom. We are constantly looking for new

ways to reduce our emissions and we actively

research new technologies and operating systems

to help us achieve this.

External InitiativesAlthough we can have direct control over how

we run our business and how we can implement

initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint, we also

realise we can help and have influence over our

suppliers and customers, to help them make a

difference to their carbon usage/emissions.

Helping suppliers measure their carbon footprint is

the first step to awareness and reduction. We have

subscribed to access FIRA’s (Furniture Industry

Research Association) furniture footprinter soft-

ware, which we share with our suppliers to help

document the carbon footprint of all

products we sell. We have heavily invested in SKA

training for key members of our staff, we promote

carbon offset schemes and have developed waste

streams for organisations, all this as well as

promoting the Waste to Wonder Initiative to help

companies reuse we distribute unwanted furniture

and equipment away from landfill and instead

support charitable projects both in the UK and

abroad.

Recycle and Waste Management

We have developed waste management streams

for many organisation to best minimise the

carbon footprint of the process. Only if all the

re-use and redistribution schemes have been

exhausted or furniture is beyond repair do we

send it to be recycled. Recycling to us means

segregating products into their core elements,

wood, metal, plastic etc… this is done at our

distribution hubs before being collected by

local recycling companies.

Waste Hierarchy Wagstaff / Big Bright Future Trust/ W2W Initiative

The EU Waste Hierarchy promotes reduce,

reuse, recycle in that order and that is exactly

the approach Waste to Wonder take. They aim to

maximise charitable reuse of equipment and this

usually exceeds 80% with only damaged or

unsuitable equipment being recycled. In over 12

years less than 0.5% of equipment has needed to

go to landfill as it was classed as hazardous.

Environmental BenefitsWagstaff / Big Bright Future Trust/ W2W Initiative

ISO14001, WEEE and other legislative systems are ensuring that environmental compliance remains at the forefront of business critical decision-making.

The Waste to Wonder process ensures the follow-ing environmental impact benefits are achieved:

• Reduced Carbon Dioxide emissions

• The environmental impact of creating a new item is eliminated

• Reduced consumption of natural resources and energy

• Reduce land area required assimilating solid waste

• Reduce landfill greenhouse emissions.

It delivers all of these benefits in a cost effective, and simple process, which compliments your existing initiatives.

Carbon MeasurementWagstaff / Big Bright Future Trust/ W2W Initiative

Waste to Wonders carbon measurement matrix was derived from the Comprehensive Environmental Data Archive (CEDA), which was developed by Dr Sangwon Suh, recognised internationally as a leading LCA authority, and the original author of the integrated hybrid method, Dr Suh consults to governments, protocols and multi-nationals around the world.

Dr Suh acts as principle technical advisor for CarbonRiver, a UK based Carbon consultancy who provide a comprehensive range of carbon account-ing, environmental impact measurement, analysis, management, communication and accreditation services.

CarbonRiver uses a methodology known as Hybrid Life Cycle Assessment (HLCA). As recommended by current and emerging global protocol. HLCA is a best of breed approach, which combines the best of both more common methods:

Process Life Cycle Assessment and Economic Input Output Life Cycle Assessment. Carbon measurements are only applied to items that are redistributed as part of the project.

The first, which is dear to our hearts, Hope

for the Hopeless charity, was established in

2008 by Mariama Sanusi. Her charity, which

is proudly female led, is an enabling organisa-

tion which seeks to improve lives throughout

the Freetown region of Sierra Leone; a country

that is still feeling the ravages of civil war and

was recently struck by a devastating Ebola

outbreak.

The second, received half of the items

collected from the Commonwealth

Secretariat project, with the remaining items

being dispatched on a smaller 20ft ‘School in

a Box‘ container to equip a newly constructed

school in Selela Tanzania.

With the generous donation of funds from the

Argent Family from Australia, the region’s first

school was built by the Masai villagers,

providing the villages’ children their first

opportunities for a formal education.

With thanks to the Commonwealth

Secretariat’s and Waste to Wonder Wagstaff

are incredibly proud to play our

small but vital part in minimising waste and

maximising the educational fortunes of

those in developing nations and are

incredibly grateful for the opportunity.

We recently completed an ethical clear-ance project for the Commonwealth Secretariat, whose offices span Pall Mall in London and are situated right next to the magnificent St James’ Palace. Long time clients of Wagstaff, the Commonwealth Secretariat are the administrative arm of the Commonwealth and we were delighted to redistribute 100% of the items collected from their third floor over the last weekend in October. Over 35 fantastic desks, with matching

pedestals and cupboards were

collected and delivered to Waste to

Wonder’s Colerne redistribution hub. W2W

have allocated the items from this project to

two very worthwhile projects that form part of

their ‘School in a Box’ initiative.

EONWagstaff / Big Bright Future Trust / W2W Initiative

Wagstaff won the contract to supply products and services to Eon energy for the next three years. One of our key USP’s was our partnership with Waste to Wonder to ethically manage Eon’s unwanted furniture from various site across the UK.

We’ve made a great start, four ethical clearance projects were undertaken throughout January

this year in total there was 3,333 kg of good quality office equipment that was reused both here

in the UK and as part of the ‘School in a Box’ programmes, a shipment was sent to support two

educational projects that are operating in Uganda.

Financial savings achieved through reuse over recycling: £194.40 (1,440 kg @ £135 per tonne)

In February we organised the collection of

648kg of good quality office equipment from

Eon’s Middlewich site in Cheshire, three of

the small cabinets were rehomed at The

Scrapstore in Swindon and the remaining

items were stored in W2W’s warehouse

before being redistributed.

The Scrapstore in Swindon is a low cost

community resource centre and

environmental charity, a home to a

multitude of projects dedicated to releasing

the untapped potential of all things, people

and possibilities. An Aladdin’s Cave of

materials ready to stimulate young

imaginations!

In March we conducted another ethical

clearance project on behalf of Eon Energy. In

total there was 1,982 kg of good quality of-

fice equipment that was reused as part of our

‘School in a Box’ programme. A shipment

was sent to support the children’s solution

ministries in Uganda.

In July 2016 will were extremely busy with

five Eon projects that required ethical

clearance of furniture items. From the items

collected there were some high-quality

chairs that were perfect to redistribution

and surprisingly they didn’t wait around long

before being snapped up by The Scrapstore

in Swindon.

Other furniture items were collated ready for

the international ‘School in a Box’

programme shipment, which was sent out to

Sierra Leone in conjunction with the charity

Hope for the Hopeless.

Unfortunately the remaining items were

not of such high calibre and as such were

deemed unsuitable for donation, though we

did ensure that these items were recycle

responsibly.

In August we completed a collection

project for Eon at the Kingwindford site,

where we were able to re-distributed a

number of items. We supported the Swindon

based charity called the Scrapstore with

20 chairs, as well as the UK Sepsis Trust,

Birmingham Charity, with a desk and

Wiltshire College with a further 20 chairs.

The remaining items formed part of a ship-

ment for the ‘School in a Box’ programme

which was sent to Sierra Leone in

conjunction with the charity Hope for the

Hopeless.

By September, saw us collect an unwanted

desk, which was added onto storage for

future ‘School in a Box’ shipments.

We are very proud of the continuing work that

we are carrying our for our client Eon Energy

and we would like to thank them for their

support in making these projects happen.

Wakefield House - Nationwide Building Society

Nationwide Building Society approached our managing director Daren Miles wanted to utilize an ethical approach to dispose of some redundant furniture from Wakefield House in Swindon. Daren invited Waste to Wonder to attend the survey on his behalf. The survey identified a significant volume of items that were suitable for reuse and so collection was arranged for a Friday evening and Saturday morning in May this year. From the items collected Waste to Wonder have been delighted to donate most of the cupboards, tables and chairs to both local and international good causes.

Trilogy - August 2016

Once the decision had been taken to vacate the Trilogy site in Swindon, it

became apparent that there would be a significant volume of furniture that

would no longer be required by Nationwide Building Society. We are

Nationwide’s supplier of new furniture and as part of our commitment to

our CSR we always recommend businesses with redundant furniture to

utilise waste of wonder as a cost-effective and environmentally sensible

solution.

Having surveyed site with David Vann from the Nationwide’s facilities team

Waste to Wonder determined that a significant quantity of items would

be suitable for reuse. In all, over two floors of furniture were collected

over several days in August with hundreds of items supporting local and

international charitable causes. As well as Waste to Wonder interna-

tional School in a Box project to Freetown Sierra Leone, items from the

trilogy clearance have supported the UK Sepsis Trust, Swindon children’s

Scrapstore, Wiltshire College and Prospect Hospices. We would like to

extend our thanks to David Vann and all the Nationwide staff involved in

this project helping us with the help of Waste to Wonder improve lives

around the world.

UTC Aerospace Systems March 2016

In March 2016, we were asked to com-

plete a clearance for UTC Aerospace

Systems for their offices in Worcester.

From the items collected, there were

numerous high-quality items that were

perfect to redistribution. We were able

to support a number of national as

well as international charities, while

supporting our ‘School in a Box’

programme for the items that were not

suitable for redistribution we

ethically disposed of these through our

recycling Partner MJ Church.

Wagstaff and the Environment Annual Report 2016/17 - 24 -

Michael Amos (right), MD of Waste to Wonder presented

Wagstaff with a crystal award of the Big Bright Future

Trust, in recognition of their charitable support. Wagstaff

has been very active in supporting the re-use of office

furniture and equipment within the UK and Africa. The

award was accepted by Michael Selman (left), Head of

Design & Marketing.

Wagstaff in partnership with MPS has been awarded

Silver Level membership as part of the Mayor of London’s

green procurement code.

This initiative was introduced by Boris Johnson to

encourage companies to be environmentally aware of the

selection of products and services promoted within their

company which also have minimal impact on our

environment.

This involves integrating environmental considerations

into all stages of the purchasing process: from avoiding

unnecessary purchases and identifying greener products,

to the specifications you use for contracts and whole life

costing.

Green procurement is no longer limited to recycled paper

but covers most areas of business activity including

construction, furniture, IT equipment and transport.

By making informed choices about the products we buy,

we can make a real difference to the environment and

improve London’s resource efficiency.

SKA RatingUpdating Wagstaff standards and accreditations

IEMA Associate Certificate in Environmental ManagementUpdating Wagstaff standards and accreditations

Our health, safety and environmental officer Andy Roberts has

now been a RICS accredited official SKA assessor for over a

year. This has been great news our business as it allows us to

internally verify the environmental impact of individual interior

fit-out and furniture projects. But this also means Andy can

assess other companies projects and provide them with a

quality assured assessment certificate. The SKA assessment

helps to benchmark the performance of fit-out projects against

each other and the rest of the industry.

A SKA rating will enables us to measure 100% of the

environmental performance of an office fit-out. Since SKA

rating does not consider the base build, it measures only what

we do to add value to our client’s projects

Key aspects of the rating system• Flexible scoping: match the rating to the scope of the

fit-out • Easy-to-use online tool• A label that is clear and easy to understand:

Bronze, Silver and Gold, plus a percentage score • A formal, quality assured scheme for those who

require a certificate• Applicable to offices (retail version currently under

development)SKA comprises more than a hundred 'good practice' measures

covering energy and CO2 emissions, waste, water, materials

pollution, wellbeing and transport.

For 2017 Andy Roberts is aiming to complete the IEMA Certificate in Environmental Management to further his skill set for the business, his career and personal development.

The course is designed for those with responsibility for improving sustainability and environmental management in their organisation, whether they’re in the public private or non-governmental sectors. Successful candidates gain associate membership of the Institute of environmental management and assessment.

The course is arranged in TEN modules.

1. Foundations in environmental management sustainability principles.

2. Drivers to change environmental challenges and policy instruments

3. Environmental law regulations standards and codes of practice

4. Environmental management systems auditing and emergency planning

5. Evaluation and assessment of environmental risk

6. Management tools and techniques to prevent pollution

7. Developing a business case for sustainable solutions

8. Communication and stakeholder engagement

9. Leadership influencing behaviour and change management

10. Performance measurement reporting

We wish Andy the very best of luck in achieving this prestigious qualification

Whitepaper 2 Emerging Technology and the Office of the FutureA guide to key technologies and their potential impact in today’s office

• Fixed phones will vanish with a move to software or

‘softphones’ connecting people to people regardless

of location.

• People more mobile around and out of the office so

circulation and shared space will increase.

• Remote users can create Virtual Private Network

through laptops to their company’s server allowing

use of softphones.

• Wi-Fi enabled mobiles will roam onto the local

corporate network.

Our Environmental WhitepapersWe are fascinated by our industry so much so that

we have commissioned leading expert Phillip Ross,

CEO of Unwired Ltd to produce a series of reports

relating to the working environment and the future

of the workplace.

Each paper provides a unique insight into the way we

work and the factors which effect us now and in the not

too distant future, in fact some of these ideas have been

put into practice by many forward thinking

organisations.

Many of these topics will help companies to think

about how they could reduce the amount of CO2 they

consume, with improved efficiency and new ways of

working, which could better suit both the employer and

employee.

Whitepaper 1 New Ways of WorkingA guide to transform the landscape of the modern day working environment to follow the range of new technologies and techno-savvy workforce.

• Lose the concept of one person – one desk

as workstations are shared.

• Workspace will lose heavy IT and telephony

equipment and become a simplified space

supporting mobile, portable technology.

• Cost savings from pared down workspace, capex

(through less space) and opex (through less churn).

• Fewer allocated desks and increased collaborative and

shared space.

Whitepaper 4 Sustainability in the WorkplaceA focus on energy efficiency in the workplace.

• Carbon footprint of workplace includes fit-out, materials, equipment and workers’ behaviour. Consider long-term energy efficiency and cost-savings of equipment against initial cost.

• Energy saving workforce encouraged by visual energy dashboards to change behaviour.

• Space management systems optimise energy use by reducing heating and lighting of empty space.

• Intelligent management information systems allow increased control over environment (heating, lighting as well as accountability for energy use.

Whitepaper 7 Carbon Offsetting and Green ClaimsA guide to Official Targets and Sustainable Construction ways of Reducing Energy.

• Companies are now taking climate change seriously from a financial and legal perspective rather than from a moral or ethical one.

• The UK has targets to cut emissions by 34% and increase its renewable energy. Buildings account for 40% of all emissions so must play a part in this.

• Smart buildings with Building Management Systems and sensors can optimise heating and lighting use thereby cutting energy bills and emissions.

• Energy management companies plus government loans and capital allowances can help companies improve their energy efficiency.

Our Target & GoalsFuture Initiatives

We understand the importance of having a strong environmental policy

and hope you will agree that we are aware and are actively working to

reduce our impact on the environment, at the same time as trying to

help our suppliers and customers to do the same. If we can help to

influence all of our supplier’s to work to the same values as us, we will

be making a huge difference in our industry.

As awareness and legislation changes to improve the world we work

in, Wagstaff pledge to continually assess, update and improve our CO2

reduction program and the way in which we work to improve the world

we live in.

By 2018 we plan to implement some, if not all, of the

following initiatives:

• Use external computer clouds to access electronic information

thus reducing the need to expand our server capacity and

physical footprint.

• Manage display and mock-up furniture through the Waste to

Wonder Initiative to be re-used for charity based project across

the UK and abroad.

• By 2018 insist that all our suppliers package their goods as

sparsely as possible with packaging made from 60% recycled or

100% FSC managed forests and 95% recyclable materials

• Installation of Co2e power modules across the regional offices to

automatically turn off electrical equipment when not in use and

monitor power consumption.

• Communicating more frequently through technologies such as

VoIP for conference calling to reduce business travel miles.

• Encourage and support home-working where applicable to

reduce commuting miles.

• Reduce the number of company vehicles in favor of public

transport.

• Monitor, advise and assist our supplier’s and sub-contractors to

ensure their environmental policies have met or are aimed at

meeting our standards or beyond.

• Re-use packaging, collected by suppliers to package

new product.
