A delightful book 27 September 2013

By Joyce - Published on Amazon.comFormat: Paperback

With this delightful book, Murphy Americanizes the tradition of Zen stories, making thepractice more accessible and understandable. Having interviewed many Zen teachersand practitioners, he weaves a history of American Zen through a collection ofpriceless vignettes. It is instructive that one famous Zen master delayed his departurefrom a conference, after all the others had left, in order to experience the full moonover the mountains the next evening. Another teacher tells of coming to Zen thinkingshe wanted everyone to love her. "What I discovered was that I'd had it backwards--myreal deep desire was to be able to love everyone. Which, when I met Suzuki Roshi, seemed to be a real possibility. Because he seemed to be able to do that."

Murphy tells stories of the influence American women had in bringing Zen to the West,of D.T. Suzuki meeting Paul Tillich, of "Freud meeting Buddha," of Gary Snyder'scareer as an anthropologist ending when he read D. T. Suzuki as he hitchhiked tograduate school, of Zen in prisons, and many other fascinating tales.

Funny, piercing stories 24 April 2013

By Paul Agostinelli - Published on Amazon.comFormat: Paperback

This is a wonderful book, and I am happy to see it re-issued. It ranges far and wide todiscover insightful stories from many Zen communities, teachers, and students. SeanMurphy did a lot of footwork for this book, and it shows. Rarely are accounts fromdisparate teachers and lineages brought together so nimbly. The anecdotes from sucha variety of sources bring Zen practice alive in a direct, undogmatic and often veryfunny way. It reads easily and is hard to put down!
