a circle that represents the high-est point of internal life, a ringthat is a part of heaven’s influ-ence, a ring with a seal (symbolof power and rule), a circle ofdestiny.

8 ABOUT THE COMPANYThe company was established in2001 by a group of inspired cho-reographers and dancers fromthe Croatian National Ballet inZagreb out of their need for aspace for continuous artistic cre-ation. At present, Atelier Choré-graphique is a group of closelylinked artists from the entirespectrum of the stage and relat-ed arts, searching to expand theirpotential, exchange their knowl-edge and share the joy of cre-ation with their audience. The company’s repertoire policyis to create a dance theatre thatdoes not stop at dancing alone, but aims at a fusion of all stageknowledge. It is a living theatrethat, like a living organism, breathes, moves and reproduces

itself. At the core of the workstands the belief that whatmakes theatre alive and lively arethe life forms called performersthemselves. In their struggle against extinc-tion they perform throughoutCroatia and Europe. AtelierChorégraphique continues itsvoyage through time and space, seeking to improve and renovateitself, facing new challenges witheach new production under theinspired and uncorrupted guid-ance of the theatre spirit itself.

ERIK! A SA’TI(E)!choreography: Mark Boldinnumber of performers: 4A kaleidoscope that consists ofmusic by Satie, verses, miniaturesongs, pieces for the piano, nur-tured casual thoughts, wittyremarks and thoughts about art, dogs and life. Four performersare at one moment Satie, or hiscompanions, or friends, or lovers,or fish, or thinkers, or passers-by,

or pianists, or submariners, orphilosophers, or wanderers.Satie’s music is not only thebackground, but the initiator andcommentator, inspiration forimprovisation and soft pillow fordreams and hopes to land on.Satie’s verses and thoughts arethe driving force for the verbalpieces of the performance whichis structured as an associationassembly, and dance and move-ment are inseparable elements oflife of Satie’s work on the stage.

A Night With the Kingchoreography: Mark Boldinnumber of performers: 2The performance is a two-woman show presented by twooutstanding dance artists, ErsiliaNikpalj and Giulia Ferrari. In theone-hour event they lead usthrough an evening of 17 song bythe king of rock’n’roll. His pres-ence, whether alive or not, is feltequally by them on stage, spend-ing a night in Heartbreak Hotel,as well as by the audience. Theperformance is not another Elvis

story retold, but rather an inti-mate and honest account of thewomen’s emotions, evoked byhis voice and charisma. It is adance with an idea that lives onlong after his death and homageto his incredible art and unforget-table stage appearances.

NMQP (No More QuestionsPlease) and Self-portrait NMQP (duration 10 min)choreography: Mark Boldinnumber of performers: 2The duet contrasts two worlds ofa couple in their everyday life. Onthe surface it is a humorousaccount of repetitive argumentsand fights, their stubbornnessand inability to communicate. Atthe core it depicts an accumula-tion of all the love they once feltand still share, though somewhatforgotten. In a short flash theirmutual passion seems like adream that passes as fast as theblink of an eye, but lasts longenough to change the world, andfinally their mood.

Self-portrait (duration 20 min)choreography: Mark Boldinnumber of performers: 1This is a journey through picturesof the personal past. In ninestages, the author depicts scenesfrom personal experience anddreams, which he feels are partof the human collective back-ground and of which he is notsure that they are limited to acertain stage on the time-line.Symbols of archetypes lead himthrough that moment of self-analysis, finding parallels to thecomposers’ personal drama.

Amore...miochoreography: Mark Boldinnumber of performers: 7A cycle of love duets dreamt andtold by mime. A man-womancouple, a man-man couple aswell as woman-woman coupleand variations of all three demon-strate that love, be it old or new, past or present, usual or unusual, has no limits in the same waythat the dance which canexpress love has no limits either.A series of illustrations, in thiscase dance images, is viewed asif on a cinema screen. A potpour-ri of well known melodies gives

each image a different intonation.

...Choreographer and dancer MarkBoldin has worked on various proj-ects, but their unvarying magic lies inthe choice of powerful themes, whatdistinguishes him essentially frommost Croatian choreographers.Instead of generalities of the lack ofany kind of explanation of the per-formed in the sense of a storyline or athematic skeleton, he almost alwayscomes to the point.Radio 101

Deleted Messagesdirector: Goran Sergej Pristaπnumber of performers: 6Deleted Messages is a perform-ance about the phenomena incollective movement. As withquarantine, the number of spec-tators allowed to enter variesaccording to the size of the room∑ one person per three squaremeters of floor space. The audi-ence is invited to freely movethrough the performance space. The behaviour and self-organiza-tion of the audience is a compo-nent of performance strategy, thusmaking the performance spaceresponsive. Epidemic intelligencecomes into effect through the

possibility of infectious behaviour.

Fleshdancechoreographer: Nikolina Pristaπnumber of performers: 3Fleshdance is a choreography inwhich the tactile potential of asurface does not govern move-ment but rather the movementmakes visible the appearance ofsurfaces and their qualities. Fleshis not a boundary between thebody and external materiality; it isa surface which determinesmovement by its ability to see bymeans of tactility, to desire with-out watching, to dissolve in themoment of sensation and afflic-tion. The joy of flesh is neither itsyearning nor the possibility of itsrealization; it grows in the processof the multiplication of erogenouszones and levels of intensity onthe surface it creates.

Walk This Way choreographer: PravdanDevlahoviÊnumber of performers: 1In this choreography, I explore

the possibilities of the body’smovement within the extent of astep. I have translated that spatiallimitation of movement to therange of my torso, arm, head, sothey might also move within thestep’s interval. I used a treadmillas a starting point of the choreog-raphy’s conceptualization becauseit offers the possibility of movingwithout travelling through space, moving above one single point. Ican imagine my body resemblinga treadmill in an everyday pedes-trian, street environment.

Solo Mechoreographers: PravdanDevlahoviÊ and Nikolina Pristaπnumber of performers: 2Solo Me is a solo for two per-formers ∑ choreographers. It is aconstruction in which two differ-ent choreographic solo materials, opinions, processes come in touchwith each other. Although bothsolos were made individually andcan be performed as such, theidea of juxtaposing, adjoining andrefracting one material in anotherseemed very interesting to beresearched.

2choreographer: Nikolina Pristaπnumber of performers: 22 is intimate ∑ it unites two dif-ferent bodies, two different natu-res of movement. 2 is an attemptto keep in contact in spite ofintentionally imposed obstacles:

to shut one’s eyes, to listen to thebody of the other and find themute language of communication.2 is a struggle for stability throughthe minimal mechanisms thatsupport the structure: breathing, sounds, vibrations of the air, memory of space, feeling for theinvisible other.4Nikolina Bujas-Pristaπ won first award for mostperspective young choreographerin Europe at the Julidans Festivalin Amsterdam.

Man.Chairchoreographer: Goran SergejPristaπnumber of performers: 3Man.Chair is a dance performanceinspired by and using as a ready-made the performance art pieceMan∑Chair, created in 1982 byD.B. 8 REVIEW EXTRACT...The performance is the result of anunpredictable process. The Croatianperforming arts collective BADco.loosens the boundaries not onlybetween spectator and dancer, but letsour search for the self-deleting per-formance become „the performance“.About ourselves in the meeting withothers...The basis for BADco.’s workis both theoretical and conceptual;about art and democracy, about bor-ders and the subtle codes we send andreceive. 8 TYPE OF WORK:contemporary dance and acting

8 ABOUT THE COMPANYThis group of authors (KristinaBajza, Maja KovaË, Mario KovaËand Sanja Tropp) started withtheir cooperation in 2003 andhave created two full-eveningperformances so far. From thevery beginning, their work allowsfor all forms of theatre and there-fore it is impossible to say at thebeginning of the creative processwhether the final product will bea drama or physical material. It isteam work in which directing, acting, dance and choreographyinterweave, furthermore, allmeans are allowed in the realiza-tion of an agreed upon idea. Sofar, they have used text as theirstarting point, which in then sub-jected to fragmentation and adetailed transformation – some

parts are transformed into adrama situation and others into aphysical situation, often into bothat the same time. They investi-gate to what extent words andmovement can merge or obstructeach other.

8 CURRENT PRODUCTIONS

Birds Birds Birdsauthors: Kristina Bajza, MajaKovaË, Mario KovaË and SanjaTroppnumber of performers: 3Based on the motifs of RadovanIvπiÊ’s drama Daha, the perform-ance tries to investigate in whatway the same body functions inconditions of complete and utter-ly unrestricted freedom. Is it pos-sible that absolute freedomsometimes inhibits and restrictsus exactly by the innumerablepossibilities that lie in front of us

and we do not dare to chooseonly one and affirm with convic-tion that it is the right one?

Morningauthors: Kristina Bajza, MajaKovaË, Mario KovaË and SanjaTroppnumber of performers: 3The starting point for this projectis the play by Sarah Kane 4.48Psychosis. The text is poeticenough to move away from itsdramatic identity, especially afterchoreographic interventions. Theexploration focuses on how far abody can go in nonverbal expres-sions of emotions such as anxi-ety, weakness or inhibition, inother words, how a body reactson the stage in conditions ofimposed physical and mentalobstruction and limitation. Anintense desire for suicide as thelast act of breaking up with the

worldly (physical) seems to be astarting place to enter theunknown.

8 REVIEW EXTRACT...all three performers skilfullyimmersed themselves into painfulstates of mind, exhausted facialexpression and excellently integratedthe uncoordinated movements(twitches or dance) of the body...Slobodna Dalmacija

8 TYPE OF WORK:theatre performances

8 ABOUT THE COMPANYBanana Guerilla was founded in2005 by Oliver FrljiÊ and PetraZanki with the intent to exploreother possibilities of communica-tion among participants in a cre-ative process. It is not a regularartistic organization with anestablished hierarchy, but rathera space of creation and investiga-tion of new modes of creativity. The impulse for establishing thisorganization was the book byJacques RanciËre, The IgnorantSchoolmaster, whose ideas andthe insisting on an anti-methodol-ogy approach were implementedin the artistic environment andbecame a mode of communica-tion between the members. The work of Banana Guerilla isrelated to not only the local socialand artistic context, but also to a

broader, European context andthe position of our society in thiscontext. Banana Guerilla attemptsto emphasize the manipulativepotential and metaphysical back-ground of the notion identity. Oursociety is strongly marked asbeing in search for identity.Banana Guerilla works on denoun-cing identity as a stabile entity. Itblurs the boundaries and showsidentity as a dynamic, almostincomprehensible reality. Most members are also active inother projects and institutionsand they consider Banana Guerillaas a unique space for examiningpossibilities that they lack in theirinstitutional work.Banana Guerilla is an organizationwith a wide range of artistic activi-ties. Apart from theatre, they planto expand their work to dance, new media, publishing, socialactivism, etc.

8 CURRENT PRODUCTIONS

Death of Dantondirection: Oliver FrljiÊnumber of performers: 6This performance is conceived asa machine with the possibility ofplugging into another machine (aliterary one or a social one, forexample) rather than a (re)produc-tion of stabile entities (presup-posed meaning, for example). The starting point of this work isthe idea of different connectionswhich can be established betweenthe performance and diverse con-texts of its occurring. The con-cerns are quantitative potential, productive ability and parameterswhich influence the productive-ness of a performance. Apartfrom the perceptive changes thatoccur, it is also focused on thedecrease and increase of its ownfunctionality, depending on thespatial quality of a given location.

Group dynamics is another fieldof interest and the performanceexplores the changes to which itis subjected (micropolitics of theperformance and relationsbetween the performers, pro-duced by a particular context ofperforming). The performers arenot only observed, but are alsoobservers.

LAREDOSOUVENIRS / living the mem-oriesauthor: Petra Zankinumber of performers: 5This is a stage recomposition ofmemories and a story aboutexisting and non-existing cities. Itis created as a combination of avideo record and live performance. The audience is invited to take ajourney into the world of Laredo, created from our dreams anddesires, and the experiences ofthose who we have met on our

way. The stage displays the illu-sion of travelling to a big, illumi-nated city, a place that is alwayssomewhere else. Our journey isunintentionally directed to far-away places. Is it possible toexpress a universal relationshipthrough the marginal, discarded, emptiness? The story, text andmovement create Laredo as a vir-tual, cybernetic world ∑ a place ofmoving non-place. A place ofmemory or retelling reminis-cences. A place of theatre non-activity.

8 ABOUT THE COMPANYThe Burka Dance Company is anindependent non-institutionaltheatre-dance company whichnurtures contemporary free danceexpression through original thea-tre-dance projects created byindependent artist Neda MaroviÊTurkoviÊ.Her artistic work is based on abroad perception of dance/move-ment that refuses to exist withinthe boundaries of either traditio-nal or modern choreography. Asa starting point in her work, shechooses improvisation and indivi-dual work with bodies, and moti-vation for the movement is emo-tion and/or making an effort toconquer space. The resulting workis intimate and personalized cho-reography, rather spontaneousand one that comes from withinrather than following a choreo-

8 ABOUT THE COMPANYThe Crystal Cube of Brightnesswas founded in 1979 in the townof Sisak. Since that time, its arti-stic director, Jasminka Petek-Krapljan has choreographed morethan twenty performances. Thecompany participated in numerousfestivals of alternative theatre allover the world (Switzerland,Germany, India, Belgium, etc.)and won a number of prizes atchoreography contests both inCroatia and abroad. Being theonly dance company (studio) inthe region, The Crystal Cube ofBrightness is of enormous importance for the town of Sisakand the surrounding area.4In her work, Ms Petek-Krapljanis mainly concerned with emotional states in a broadsense, interpreted by contemporary dance. During the

years, she has developed anauthentic and recognizable style, very poetic, characterized by astrong sense of the visual andenriched with carefully chosendetails.

8 CURRENT PRODUCTIONS

Behind Closed Doorsauthors: Jasminka Petek-Krapljanand Jasmin NovljakoviÊnumber of performers: 12The performance reveals memories of a boy presented inbeautiful pictures, which resemblephotos in a family album due to askilful play of light and shadow. The atmosphere is gloomy andsad, indicating moments in life ofordinary people in war times, yetnever becoming a direct interpretation.

Cinnamon Coloured Roomauthors: Jasminka Petek-Krapljanand Jasmin NovljakoviÊnumber of performers: 10The performance deals with therelationship between a man andwoman, offering variations in therelationship when they are partying and drinking, which produces an explosion of energypresented in a very dynamic choreography, accompanied byequally dynamic music and interesting visual solutions.

The Night of a Great Seasonauthors: Jasminka Petek-Krapljannumber of performers: 8Supermodels, fashion and glamorous way of life are thetopic of this performance. Theaudience, while waiting for thebeginning of the performance areexposed to fashion magazinesscattered on tables in the hall, with Fashion TV on the screen. However, the beginning of the

performance opens a completelynew world, with the same protagonists, but showing the other side of what seems to be abeautiful life at first sight. It is achoreographic insight into thecruel duality of glamour, which atthe end inevitably becomes one.

8 REWIEV EXTRACT...Dance theatre of Jasminka PetekKrapljan...has attracted the audiencefor fifteen years with her strong personal expression. The Third Imaginarium is a proj-ect divided into three separateparts: 7 Stages, BorderLines andNine in One. The third part is notmaterialised, but is conceptuallyimagined therefore the audienceimagine it themselves accordingto a written model. The projectexplores movement in geometri-cally restricted spaces and theways of physical presentationwithin the defined forms.

Part I - 7 Stageschoreography: Nensi LaziÊnumber of performers: 2The dancers move within 7squares in a structured improvi-sation and by following certainrules thus defining them themati-cally by individual parts of theirbodies. The space imposes itsown rules and (de)forms thedancers and their movements,

eventually becoming elusive.

Part II - BorderLineschoreography: Nensi LaziÊnumber of performers: 3The defined space are lines, andthe dancers, by repetition ofmovement, build a simple struc-ture on these lines. The spaceremains unchanged and theattention is more focused ontime and its continuum.

8 REVIEW EXTRACT...BorderLines is a stimulating con-ceptual work, establishing disciplinedstructure within an extremely con-fined space: for almost the full half-hour each woman’s steps did notdeviate from her straight line andwhen they suddenly weaved out of thelight and back through it, to left andright, it was the sign for the work toend... LaziÊ has created a pared down, deconstructed dance text of suchbreathtaking, yet simple, intensity

that it fits into an intellectual investi-gation that incorporates JudsonChurch and travels through TrishaBrown and Anne Teresa deKeersmaker...www.londondance.com

8 TYPE OF WORK:contemporary dance, multimediaprojects

8 ABOUT THE COMPANYHisteria NOVA was the pseudo-nym for Marija ©ÊekiÊ from 1998to 2005 and the Histeria NOVAArtistic Association was foundedin July 2005. It is structured inthree different directions: produc-tion / coproduction of originalmultimedia artistic projects with-in the field of experimental cho-reography, interactive stage per-formance and electroacoustictheatre; Crolateral movement inthe form of professional semi-nars, lectures and workshops;and art and science researchwhich explores and developsnew, original ideas integratingart+science. In her artistic work as a choreog-rapher and dancer, Marija ©ÊekiÊis always research-oriented and

concerned with movement as aphenomenon occupying spaceand consisting of rhythm, energy, time, space geometry anddynamics. Therefore, her move-ment is abstract and mathemati-cally precise.

8 CURRENT PRODUCTIONS

Sjena / Shadowchoreography: Marija ©ÊekiÊnumber of performers: 2The frequency of the „Alpha-Theta border“ inside the humanbrain (fully active mind and fullyrelaxed body) ranges between 7-8 Hz, which corresponds to theresonant frequency of the Earthand ionosphere (7.83Hz). Thiscorrespondence indicates theexistence of a universal planetarytruth created by the balancedenergy dynamics between Manand Nature. Sjena (Shadow) bal-ances between the forms of clas-

sical ballet, contemporary dance, butoh and free jazz. It is anattempt to create Dance whichdwells within the oppositedynamics of two dancers, com-pletely different in terms of theirrace, sex, age, nationality, cultur-al background, dance educationand artistic expression, politicaland religious beliefs. Their differ-ences create one mutual thought,a movement in which they bothlook the same.

One - reconstructedchoreography: Marija ©ÊekiÊnumber of performers: 1Every abstract movement in dancereveals a „story“... underneathwhich there is a dynamic thought,a visual picture defined by thenature of movement and the con-scious will of a dancer to shiftand move inside, outside andwithin the boundaries of thesemovements. Within a strictly

defined choreography, music andlight structure (created in 2002),the performer is left with a newspace for interpretation but almostno room to „improvise“.Accompanied by the digitallyprocessed sound of the dancer’sbreath (lavalier headset), theentire performance creates ONEactive thought within a mutualconstruction set by an even morecomplex structure, but „free“movement accords.

8 ABOUT THE COMPANYk.o. / kombinirane operacije /(combined operations) was formedin December 1998 through a clear-ly excessive lapse of staging theirfirst performance EXIT at TheFestival of Youth in Kikinda (Serbia).Imagined as a collaboration ofthe artistic duo Saπa BoæiÊ andÆeljka SanËanin, k.o has devel-oped non-institutional models ofartistic work and production incontemporary dance and per-formance surroundings. Up tothe present, k.o has created nineautonomous and collective danceperformances in which they havecollaborated with different artisticindividuals and a great number ofindependent organizations fromthe Croatian and international artscene. The group is comprisedof: Saπa BoæiÊ (director / dance

dramaturge), Æeljka SanËanin(choreographer, dancer / per-former), Barbara MatijeviÊ (chore-ographer, dancer / performer) andAndrej VuËenoviÊ (video artist).

8 CURRENT PRODUCTIONS

Roland Barthes: Lover’sDiscourseauthors: Selma Banich, SaπaBoæiÊ, Oliver FrljiÊ, Milan MarkoJastrevski, Æeljka SanËanin andAndrej VuËenoviÊnumber of performers: 4Conceived as a multimedia hap-pening, freely touching on thedelicate curves of Barthes’ text, the performance questions themodes of an author’s creativityand collective work in the perfor-mative media. Starting from thethesis by the famous Frenchphilosopher on the dislocation oflover’s language from the repre-sentative model of reality, theperformance affirms the ineffi-

cient possibilities of speech onhuman solitude and the necessityof mirroring in the Other throughan increased referentiality of lan-guage. The performance dealswith the lover’s discourse as aplace of creation, a space wherelanguage in its neglected, deniedaspect surprisingly becomes amodel of simulated, non-realisticaction. In other words, the workon the project is directed towardsthe re-evaluation of the amorousdiscourse to the profit of a poten-tially structured performative fact.

Solo: Cycle / 1 / project OnLabourchoreography: Æeljka SanËaninnumber of performers: 1A choreographic essay whichrefers to different aspects ofartistic work phenomena in themedium of dance and choreogra-phy. Through auto-referentiality,the performance explores thenormative ideology of choreo-

graphic practices, attempting toemphasize the tangibility of thedance medium, its perceptive vis-ibility and semiotic elusiveness. The landscape of choreography isdeliberately sculptural, affirmingBarthes’s idea of the punctum: adetail that escapes every rational-isation. Expanding the territory ofmanipulation, from performer’sbody via performing space to theperception of recipients, the per-formance attempts to multiply thesignifying process by the con-stant transformation of the dancematerial therefore dissolving itsown need for conceptual meaning.

8 REVIEW EXTRACT...What Æeljka SanËanin manages todo is emotive distance, separatenessfrom her own body which she manip-ulates on a purely physical level inorder to perhaps create a sign thatmay or may not have a personality...Vijenac

8 TYPE OF WORK:contemporary dance

8 ABOUT THE COMPANYThe company was founded byRajko PavliÊ who is the choreog-rapher of the majority of the per-formances. His style is specific interms of fusion of highly physicalcontemporary dance with otherdance forms, such as ethno, showdance, breakdance and ballroomdance. In over two decades of artisticwork, the company has alwaysseen fragmentariness as the basicapproach to movement thus trans-forming images into associativeideas. This play of rational andirrational is reflected in move-ment that becomes either struc-tured and balanced or dispersedand fragmentary. Such an approach to dance arthas opened up many possibilitiesfor the company to collaborate

with a wide range of dance artistsand to produce theatre works aswell as choreographies in theamusement industry. The company has performed inCroatia and abroad (Germany,Mexico, Italy).

8 CURRENT PRODUCTIONS

Domesticus vulgaris or PlainDomesticchoreography: Rajko PavliÊnumber of performers: 4A music and dance project, inspired by albums Zeleni kaderand Domesticus vulgaris (byCroatian band Cinkuπi) and theanimated film Ciganjska by MarkoMeπtroviÊ and Davor MeureËan.Every song is a motivation todance, creating a distinctive cor-pus poeticum of music andmovement, which, consciously orunconsciously, becomes a gen-uine source of contemporary

„ethno dance“. The film servesas a counterpoint to a rapturous, poetic atmosphere that suddenlyturns into an „anti-happy ending“.

There is No Business likeShow Business or Neue kroat-ische Kunstchoreography: Rajko PavliÊnumber of performers: 10A musical-dramatic staging, deal-ing with an idea on what shouldbe the new Croatian art. The per-formance is a satire and dealswith values in a consumer’sworld and the influence of media. It is performed by an outstandingCroatian actress Zrinka CviteπiÊ,who is accompanied by an ethnoband.

8 REVIEW EXTRACT...the dance-film-musical performancein three parts leaves the audiencemoved and convinced that goodnessor beauty really (sometimes, often?)hides in small things also, as well asin, at first glance, simple but perhapsbasic emotions. 8 ABOUT THE COMPANYThe company was founded in2003 and gathers five dancerswho cooperate with musicians, visual and new media artists. They explore media such asdrama theatre, video and installa-tion. The artistic vocabulary usedin their works is accessible andhumorous and their mode ofoperation is always open toexperimentation. In their work, they explore everyday situationsand interpersonal relations in anurban environment by using non-verbal as well as verbal ways ofcommunication, often interpret-ing them in a humorous manner.

Corrosion ltd.choreography: Natalija ManojloviÊnumber of performers: 4The performance is intended as achoreographic exploration. It isinspired by the procedures ofrationalisation of task fulfilment inindustrial production where pro-ductivity is more important thanhumanity. Therefore, they investi-gate the body as machine. Theprocess of production is an illus-tration of the relationship of theworkers to a machine, of a com-pany to an employer, of a dancerto the body. In the process ofwork, they search for an econom-ical movement and the chance toreplace the body with machineand the machine with body. Themovement refers to functionalityin industrial production, the lawsof mechanics and „metalness“of the sound.

Exc(a)use meconcept by: Natalija ManojloviÊnumber of performers: 5The performance deals withsomething called „denf“, a spe-cific problem of discomfort ortrouble that appears in variousforms and is a result of a numberof situations (for example, whena child is reciting a poem in frontof everybody in the class andstarts to squeeze his trouserswith his hand out of embarrass-ment). In a humorous and verysincere manner, the performerscreate this kind of situation onstage.

8 REVIEW EXTRACT....The manner in which the perform-ers take the role of machine and rep-resent only tools without faces andnames is excellent in every respect. With a continuous mechanical move-ment of their own bodies, they mergewith the surroundings as if we arewatching a play of vertical and hori-zontal lines...

Sodaberg’sconception, research, choreogra-phy, education as well as a newapproach to music use (for exam-ple, traditional opera material)positions their work within a newCroatian dance scene. The initia-tive was founded in 2005 by cho-reographer and dancer MarjanaKrajaË, choreographer and dancerNensi LaziÊ and theatre theoreti-cian Andrej MirËev. Author/chore-ographer and dancer SelmaBanich, sound-designers DariusGall and Guido Henneboehl aswell as video-artist Anna Safaryare also regular support to the

creation and research. In herchoreographic work, MarjanaKrajaË is oriented to research onnew performing concepts in thefield of contemporary danceexpression, often in fruitful con-frontation with other fields of art.Her strictly defined performingstrategies of high visual qualityare determined by an effort tocreate choreographic materialsthat are formally clear and com-plete, yet semantically open andassociative. Within these param-eters, her poetics is being builton two levels which always inter-weave in her performances:impressive visuality (resultingfrom her cooperation with visualartists) and transparent dancelanguage (resulting from herintensive work on the articulationof movement quality).

Lady Macbeth has Nothing toLose/Phase II - Research onOperachoreography: Marjana KrajaËand Selma Banichnumber of performers: 2The performance deals with theconfrontation between choreo-graphic and vocal material. Thedeconstruction of the libretto forVerdi’s opera Lady Macbethleads to the creation of a newmusical score and the dramatur-gy is concentrated around themotif of Lady Macbeth’s mad-ness and gradual defragmenta-tion of her world. Ranging fromabstract movement to a sopranoperformance which is very dra-matic at moments, the entireperformance takes place at thepoint in which choreographytransforms into opera and viceversa.

Seducing Pablo Escobar - ASolochoreography: Marjana KrajaËnumber of performers: 1The major drug dealer of theMedellin Cartel was the first manin the history of crime to make abillion US dollars. Loved by manyand persecuted by only a few,Escobar’s life came to an end atthe age of 43. On November6th, 1985, a bloody deed shockedthe world public: Pablo Escobar’smen attacked the Columbian courtof law and murdered a number ofguardians of the law. It was adesperate attempt to escapebeing handed over to the UnitedStates of America. Even thoughhe was unable to change it, he atleast wanted to defy the law andeliminate the policemen. Thisindescribable bloody deed waswitnessed by journalist ElizabethMora who interviewed PabloEscobar six times.

Slippingsauthor: Jasmina SafiÊnumber of performers: 3The performance resulted fromresearch on the definition of leit-motif and the theory of crime fic-tion works of art. A strict defini-tion of leitmotif in a crime storyis a constant. Suppressed andseductive, yet scary, the atmos-phere opens up three positions ∑the detective, the murderer andthe victim. By investigating thetypicality, determination and exclu-siveness of the protagonists, theirrelationship and the situationswhich they have found or will findthemselves in, an attempt atdefining their profile is made.

What happens when we breakup the definition? Can we escapethe defined circumstances? Thepossibilities are numerous. However, we are seduced even-tually. There remain fragmentedevidence of a possible crime, possible relationships, possiblepersonalities and states of theprotagonists, and the positionswithin the triangle become unsta-ble and slippery.

Heroineschoreography: Mila »uljaknumber of performers: 1The research began in a ratherunusual manner: the verses werecreated first, then the music andeventually the choreographicmaterial. The heroines are allthree. They are the author’simpression of some female per-sons. What connects the author’sfemale friends, anonymous hero-ines in everyday life and thewomen who became importantfigures in the last century? Theyare all special in some way. Inwhat way? Progressiveness, vul-

nerability, anonymity, intelligence, talent, desires, fears, strength...The author attempts to detect andevoke all these. And thesewomen are unique, different, intriguing and charismatic. Thefeeling of connection is strongand elusive, it becomes timeless, universal. The body of the per-former is a medium throughwhich the heroines speak. Themusic record (soundtrack) andverses serve as a „memory stick“that enables the viewers to evokethe heroines if they want to.

The characters are carica-tures, and the dancing figures areinventive, somewhat comic anddetached from the complex reality.

The Rite of Springchoreography: Matjaæ FariËnumber of performers: 11How could the rite of fertility looklike? What sort of meaning wouldthat kind of rite have in today’surban environment? Is it today arite of beginning and new rebirthor an urban rite of death? These

questions make us face the greatmusical work of Igor Stravinskyand awaken the reflections of theancient rites written in our genes. And in glass, concrete and metal.

Kaputtchoreography: Mirjana Preisnumber of performers: 2A relationship between two people, unpredictable, complex, framedin ordinary everyday space insidea coat. Stone became lava andlava became stone, and it was theway of things for a long, longtime... too long to count. And then,seed-buds were planted and theseed sprouted. Fragile and alone,in the middle of the dominion ofelements, too powerful to evennotice it... But, in the desolateduniverse it was not alone. Perhapsit will grow, perhaps it will not.Perhaps it will become that whichobserves and carries gifts, and itsfruits bear new seed.

There is no bad outcome becauseeach emotion, thought, sense andexhilaration has already enrichedthe cosmic garden.

Aquaplanchoreography: Larisa Lipovacnumber of performers: 1A solo multimedia performance, which is an interaction of move-ment, drama text and video andlight. The contact between theaudience and performer is of greatrelevance therefore the audienceis seated around the stage andthe performer tries to bring theaudience into the world and sys-tem of the Aquaplan by meansof mime, text, movement, sound∑ everything the performer isexperiencing. The three states ofwater represent three spatialplans ∑ male space is the spaceof ice, stiff and restricted, andthe man feels pleasant here, unlike the woman; female spaceis the space of steam, imagina-tion and play, and the womanfeels pleasant here, unlike theman; liquid state is a mutualspace ∑ the area of harmonywhere all begins and ends, it isthe unity and togetherness of aman and a woman.

Balloonschoreography: Larisa Lipovacand Tamara CuriÊnumber of performers: 2This project is intended for chil-dren. We would like to showthem, in a different dimension, acreative way of expression thatwe achieve through movement. We explore the body at zerogravity through different situa-tions. The balloon takes on thecharacteristics of humans andthe humans (dancers) take onthe characteristics of the balloon. Our improvisations create frag-ments that make a dramaturgicalsequence and turn the play into astory. The performance stimu-lates imagination and opens upcreative opportunities in otherartistic fields.

8 ABOUT THE COMPANYThe Zagreb Dance Company hasan enviable continuity of its work(founded in 1972) and has educa-ted a number of dancers anddance experts working in Croatiaand abroad. The starting point inthe work of the company hasalways been contemporary danceas an artistic expression and anopen space for research and anew way of thinking about dance. The company is equally concer-ned with the process of work andthe education of dancers. Being arepertory company, in addition totheir always fresh collaborationswith most respected Croatian cho-reographers of high artistic value, the Zagreb Dance Company hassystematically worked on theinternationalisation of dance art inCroatia in the past couple of sea-sons, which has resulted in suc-

cessful collaborations with well-known foreign choreographers(Bebeto Cidra, Alexey Taran andEmilio Gutierrez). 4The companyhas performed throughout Croatiaas well as abroad (Germany,Russia, Hungary, Italy, Portugal,Lithuania, Spain). In 1996, theirperformance Identifying Landscapewas awarded as the best produc-tion by the European CouncilCommission at La Herencia de laDanza Festival at Valladolid, Spain.

Solitairechoreographer: Iztok KovaËnumber of performers: 8The key words in this perform-ance are loneliness and percep-tion. The performance is inspiredby the ancient Indian parable aboutblind wise men and elephant(each of them is convinced thatthey understand the true natureof the elephant, but none is ableto perceive the entirety) and itquestions the concept of truth asan essential difference between

things as they really are and howan individual perceives them. It isa provocative research on con-temporary media image of realityand the crucial question here iswhether the truth is restrictedsolely to the visions of individualsor could contact with the Otherenable true communication.

Stories without threads, PoemNo 1choreographer: Alexis Eupierrenumber of performers: 5This performance is a metaphoricjourney through a 24-day-longexperience in which we explorethree main themes: everydaycommunication dialogues, theflow and trace of energy pathsinvolved in any given activity, andin night dreams and daydreams. This piece is a physical poemconstructed as a puzzle, out of thefragmentation of multiple piecesthat are linked together followinga totally idiosyncratic order, in theway dreams do, developing outof a totally subjective point ofview, instead of being constructed

through a logical narrative threadwith a specific story line. So itshould be looked at as a puzzlethat only makes sense in its total-ity.

Alikechoreographer: Ksenija Zecnumber of performers: 4This minimalist choreographyunderpins the conceptual andcontextual divergences within twoduets in which the performersuse their personal techniques, styles and body qualities to explorethe potentials of alteration to adance material. By stressing thesimilarities (in the first duet) anddifferences (in the second duet),the performers evolve into explor-ers of their own biographies. The different styles in which theperformers approach the dancematrix creates a tension betweentheir awareness of similaritiesand a natural call for difference.Yet, following a pattern of mirror-like movement, the dancers arestrained to search for touchingpoints in their respective dance
