THE PROGRAM and OBJECTIVESThis course is designed to address the broad range of practicing contemporary pediatric dentistry. The course will begin with “Behavior Management and Parenting Styles: How Does It Affect Your Practice”. Early tooth demineral-ization diagnosis will follow with “Early Demineralization Detection Using Quantitative Light Fluorescence (QLF)”.

Current restorative concepts for children will then be presented with “Pediatric Restorative Dentistry”, which will include: The history and formulation of glass ionomer cements and their development through the contemporary photopo-

lymerized glass ionomers with clinical utilization, including advantages and disadvantages; Compomers and resins, their unique formulation, and clinical utilization; The effectiveness of caries inhibition and remineralization enhancement of fluoride-releasing glass ionomer ce-

ments; and resins; Comparison of indications and contraindications for the clinical utilization of glass ionomer cements versus com-

pomers/resins according to recommendations made during the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) Pediatric Restorative Dentistry Consensus Conference; along with

Enamel microabrasion and bleaching focusing on the indications and techniques utilized for children.

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to: Have an understanding of different parenting styles, as well as communication and coaching skills to obtain

cooperation, Have an understanding of the technology of QLF and its practical use for early prevention, associating this to risk

assessment, Have an understanding of the clinical utilization of traditional, photopolymerized glass ionomer cements,

compomers, and resin-based composites including indications and contraindications, See the available fluoride-releasing restorative materials marketed today and understand their ability to inhibit

primary and secondary caries, as well as remineralize incipient carious lesions; and Have an understanding of why esthetic enamel microabrasion and bleaching techniques are effective and how to

explain this to parents.

PROGRAM FACULTY

Adriana Segura, D.D.S., M.S., graduated in 1990 from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston. She completed a General Practice Residency program in 1991 from the Miami Veterans Hospital in Florida. Dr. Segura received her Certificate and M.S. degree in Pediatric Dentistry in 1993 from The University of Iowa. She was the General Practice Residency Director at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from 1993-1998. In 1999 she joined the faculty of the University of Texas Health Science Center as an Associate Professor and as the Director of the Predoctoral Program in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. She is currently a Professor and Interim-Chair for the Department of Community Dentistry and Director of the Ricardo Salinas Clinic at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She is active in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry as a consultant for the Council on Predoctoral Education and member of the Council on Scientific Affairs. Dr. Segura is also on the Executive Committee of the Section on Pediatric Dentistry and Oral Health of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Kevin Donly, D.D.S., M.S., is currently a Professor and Chair in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Previous positions include Professor and Associate Director of the Center for Clinical Studies at The University of Iowa, Associate Professor, Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston and Associate Professor, The University of Texas Medical School. He received his D.D.S. in 1984, Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry in 1986, and M.S. in 1986 from the University of Iowa.

Dr. Donly is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, on the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation, on the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, is the previous Chair of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Council on Post-doctoral Education, is Past-President of the American Society of Dentistry for Children and past Chair of the Public Information Committee for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He has published over 250 chapters, manuscripts and abstracts associated with pediatric dentistry and dental restorative materials research and clinical utilization. Presently, he is a principal investigator on an R01 Grant sponsored by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.

The College of Dentistry and the Center for Conferences and Institutes will make every reasonable effort to assure that requested continuing education programs are provided, but assumes no liability for failure to deliver beyond the refunding of any fees paid to The University of Iowa. The University of Iowa reserves the right to limit registration to the size of the available classroom or clinical space. Sponsorship of this course does not imply subject matter, product or technical endorsement. PRE-REGISTRATION: Pre-registration is recommended at least two weeks before course date – August 18, 2008.

REGISTRATION OPTIONS: Registrations will not be accepted without payment. You may register using any of the following methods:

CANCELLATIONS/REFUNDS: Fees paid will be refunded less a $35 per person processing fee following notice of cancellation. Refunds will not be granted for cancellations received after the course begins. For registrations charged to your credit card, the refund will be credited to your account. If insufficient enrollment necessitates canceling a course, all fees will be refunded.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT/RECORD KEEPING: CEU verification will be provided (by mail following the program) only for those individuals completing/submitting a CEU card at the completion of the program. Credit will be appropriately adjusted for those individuals who do not attend the entire program. All attendees are encouraged to submit a CEU card which will ensure that a letter documenting attendance will be sent following the program.

FOOTBALL TICKETS: Tickets for Iowa vs. Florida International on 9/6 are available on a VERY LIMITED basis at $50 each plus a $1 per ticket handling fee (limit 2 tickets per registration). Ticket requests will be filled until supply is exhausted. To order tickets, you must register and prepay for the continuing education program. Tickets MUST be picked up at the course registration desk before course adjournment. Tickets will not be mailed. Payment for tickets cannot be refunded except when ticket supply is exhausted during the pre-registration period. Tickets cannot be transferred with a registration to another course.

HOUSING: A limited number of rooms have been reserved at the Comfort Suites located at 2431 James Street, Coralville, IA 52241 (located by the Coral Ridge Mall); Phone 1-319-338-3400 – Use the Code: UI College of Dentistry – (release date 8/4/08). Please indicate that you are attending the College of Dentistry’s continuing education program and designate the appropriate code when making your reservations. The rooms will be held until supply is exhausted or release dates as previously stated. It is the responsibility of registrants to reserve their own lodging.

PARKING: Parking is included with the course registration. All registrants must be pre-registered to gain entrance to the Dental visitor’s parking lot. Bring your course confirmation letter with you to ensure admittance to the lot. Otherwise, you may be directed to a remote lot.

COMFORT ZONE: Although every effort is made to have a comfortable temperature in the meeting room, we realize everyone’s comfort zone is different. Please bring a jacket or sweater in case the room is too cool for your comfort.
