CONTEMPORARY ORANGERYA throwback to buildings first created centuries ago, Contemporary Orangeries area reincarnation using the most modern building materials and designs which createsomething that is functional as well as beautiful. Combining the roof and sky of aconservatory with the pillars and walls of a traditional orangery, a contemporarymodel is much more than just a middle-ground alternative.

Brick pillars can be matched to the existing property; an external cornice mergesthe orangery walls and frames together with the roof; and an internal lightingpelmet, together with brick pillars, echoes the feeling of being inside a traditionalhome extension.

TRADITIONAL ORANGERYTraditional Orangeries are a clear evolution of the buildings created centuriesago. But while their appearance may have changed gradually, the technologyand innovation that goes into their production has advanced rapidly and, in thatsense, they are barely recognisable from their predecessors.

The foremost difference between a Contemporary and Traditional Orangery is anatrium or ‘lantern’ roof on the latter which bestows the building with a sense ofgrandeur and extravagance.

TRADITIONALORANGERYThe brick-built pillars and walls of a Traditional Orangeryconjure a greater sense of permanence and strike a moreequal balance between privacy and light. A TraditionalOrangery offers something completely different to either anextension or a conservatory: the lantern roof providesunique sky sightlines and the robust yet elegant architecturalfeatures are indicative of a truly luxurious lifestyle.

Brick built pillars and orangery walls…

strike a more equal balancebetween privacy and light.

TRADITIONALORANGERYTraditional Orangeries that are particularly large can bedesigned to feature two or more smaller lantern roofs,as opposed to one large roof. Inside the room this offersmore scope for an overhead lighting pelmet. The size, number and positioning of windows and doors willdetermine how much of the outside world is let in; themore brick pillars that are built into the orangery, thegreater the level of privacy offered.

Unique snapshots ofthe skies above...

a traditional orangery roofcreates a different internalambience and vantage.

BESPOKEORANGERYBespoke Orangeries are, by definition, hard todescribe but some of the most flamboyantexamples incorporate more than one lantern roofwhich almost divides the orangery itself intomultiple rooms, for multiple functions. As well asbridging the gap between the indoors andoutdoors, large scale bespoke orangeries oftenalso blur the boundaries between different roomsin the house – kitchens and dining rooms forinstance – and become the hub of the home.

Add more than just an extra room…

add multifunctional space that hosts a variety of activities.

FULL HEIGHT LOGGIA Distinctive aluminium columns define a Loggia and thesecan be sited in a number of places including the corners ofthe orangery, between window frames and at either side ofdoor openings, and at the abutment to the property. Servingas a fantastic alternative to brick-built pillars, Loggiacolumns are available in a range of colours which includesoptions that both match and contrast with popular windowand door frame colours. A dwarf wall is an option ratherthan a pre-requisite, and full height columns and windowscan be incorporated to create a Loggia that is akin to aglass-to-floor conservatory.

A unique proposition forthat something different...

there is simply no such thing as a standard Loggia design.

DWARF WALL LOGGIALoggia columns are extremely versatile and can work inconjunction with a dwarf wall. The walls can be built inbetween full height columns, or shorter columns canthemselves sit on the dwarf wall. Smooth columns areclean and simple, fluted columns add intricacy to thedesign, and plinth caps and sills really punctuate the wholestructure. Loggia columns are a versatile ingredient that canbe easily integrated into any number of orangery designs.

Save money by refurbishing your existing conservatory 49

REPLACEMENTCONSERVATORIES Of the three main components of an existing conservatory – theroof, the windows and doors, and the base – two have been subjectto vast improvements in recent years and, in terms of performance, today’s options are superior beyond comparison to windows, doorsand conservatory roofs installed 10, 15 or 20 years ago.

Many conservatory bases and dwarf walls, however, remaincompletely fit for purpose and do not necessarily need to be fullyreplaced. Simply by replacing the windows, doors and roof withmodern, thermally efficient and secure counterparts you canrefurbish your conservatory and restore your pride in it.

LOCATION

Try to establish which direction the conservatory will face as this will likely impactupon the recommended glazing specification. If your plot is north or east facing itwill benefit from the sun earlier in the day, but become cooler as the day wears on.In contrast, south or west facing plots generally benefit from the most natural lightand warmth in the afternoons and evenings.

FUNCTION

The purpose of your new room will almost certainly affect the best style, size, specification and layout that will work best for you. Squarer or rectangular designsoften provide the most usable floor space, whereas bespoke designs can beinstalled on even the trickiest of plots. Think also about the need for facilities such as plug sockets, switches, spotlights and WIFI equipment to enhance usability.

MATERIAL

The frames that are used to build your orangery or conservatory can bemanufactured from UPVC or aluminium and both systems have their merits. You’ll find more information about this in the proceeding pages and your designconsultant will be able to make a recommendation based on your property andpersonal requirements.

ACCESSORIES

Once you’ve decided on the overall shape, size and specification of your orangeryor conservatory, think about the finer details and ask your design consultant toinclude accessories such as fans and heaters in your quotation so that you knowthe cost of the whole package.

QUOTES

Orangeries and conservatories are completely bespoke products and it is often verydifferent to compare two or more prices on a truly ‘like-for-like’ basis. Even if twomodels look exactly the same, the respective suppliers may use different qualitymaterials and components, their company and product accreditations may vary, and the terms of each guarantee will likely differ – one could potentially be longer or more comprehensive than another. Only you will know what your gut feeling tells you when it comes to choosing a supplier, but the cheapest option is notalways the best value.

GUARANTEE

It’s a given that orangeries and conservatories are designed to look great and functionwell for a very, very long time. Post-installation it is sometimes necessary to makesmall remedial adjustments to ensure that this remains the case and it is thereforeessential that you are completely familiar and comfortable with the terms of theguarantee that your chosen supplier provides including validity period and exclusions.

REVIEWS

Read what other homeowners and previous clients thought of your shortlistedsuppliers by asking to see their reviews and testimonials – after all, these people will have been through the same process that you are about to embark on. Makesure that reviews and testimonials and recent, genuine and relevant to the productthat you are looking to purchase.

SHOWROOMS

Brochures and websites only do partial justice to the built-in innovation and qualityof modern orangeries and conservatories. Take the time to visit showrooms andshowsites to see and feel the products in person.

BUYING AN ORANGERY OR CONSERVATORYOnce you’ve decided that you want to add a new room to your homethere are numerous considerations that your design consultant willencourage you to think about as they guide you through the buyingprocess. Here’s a little head start about what you may need to consider.

FRAME OPTIONSOther than size and shape, what makes one conservatory or orangery different fromanother, and perhaps more suited to a certain type of property? Subtle differences in thedimensions and contours of the window and door frame type may seem inconsequentialbut, in reality, make a huge difference to the overall appearance of the finished product.

UPVC

Low maintenance, long lasting and veryaffordable, Classic UPVC is theautomatic choice for many homeowners. This frame option is also one of the maincontributing factors to the impressivethermal efficiency of UPVC windows anddoors, which retain more of a home’snatural heat and reduce the owner’sreliance on central heating. Thecontoured profile features a curvedexternal bead and the overall effect is acharming, sculptured frame which isperfect for domestic applications andcan be easily shaped and curved intoelaborate gable ends.

ALUMINIUM

Contemporary Aluminium is all aboutsleek sightlines and maximum glassareas. There’s a sense of kudos aboutContemporary Aluminium that goes farbeyond kerb appeal and those who setout for aluminium windows and doorsrarely change their mind. The intricatecontour on the outside face of the profileis subtle and the chamfered bead craftsclean sightlines. Contemporary Aluminiumis available in a range of powder coatedfinishes which result in true, deep coloursor you may prefer the look of asublimated woodgrain finish which issecond only to natural wood itself.

HERITAGE

You could be forgiven for mistakingTraditional Heritage windows and doorsfor authentic timber products, such is thereplication of the aesthetics in style, dimension and finish. The window sashsits flush with the window frame in theclosed position - a standout feature of19th Century timber windows. However, the Traditional Heritage frame is actuallya composite material which boasts 21stCentury advantages such as a lowmaintenance finish, integral thermalefficiency and durability. TraditionalHeritage windows and doors aremechanically jointed as opposed towelded and this is one of several reasonswhy these windows can be consideredfor use in conservation areas.

ROOF OPTIONSThe amount or external light, warmth and noise that your new orangery orconservatory receives is influenced heavily by your choice of roof covering,as well as the glazing in windows and doors. There are a number of roofoptions to choose from which each present a different proposition.

POLYCARBONATE

Polycarbonate has long been a stapleingredient of a conservatory roof andremains a popular choice for manyhomeowners as it is tried and testedmillions of times over. The intelligentdesign of the 25mm or 35mmpolycarbonate sheets helps maintain acomfortable room temperature, regardless of the weather outside, andoptional foil inserts increase this thermalcontrol while reducing the impact ofglare from the sun. Popular shades ofpolycarbonate include clear, bronze andopal, and the full range presents youwith yet another chance to furtherpersonalise your investment.

GLASS

To fully appreciate the unique views ofthe ever-changing skies above from thecomfort of your orangery orconservatory, a glass roof is the clearchoice. The crisp and sophisticatedfinish of a glass roof facilitates a pureoutlook and also minimises the noiseimpact of rain and hail. Of course noneof these added benefits come at theexpense of excellent solar control and, inaddition to a choice of tints, manyhomeowners also specify self-cleaningglass which is advantageous particularlyif the orangery or conservatory is sited ina position which makes it difficult toaccess the roof. From the outside aglass roof simply matches your glazedwindows and doors more closely and isin harmony with the rest of the house.

SOLID ROOF

A solid roof is a different propositionaltogether and while overhead light andviews are sacrificed to some extent, theexternal look and internal feel of a solidroof conservatory is something thatneither a polycarbonate nor a glass roofcan match. Light may be sacrificed butprivacy is gained, and roof windows andintegrated spotlights will ensure thatyou’re never left in the dark. Choosingroofing tiles that match those of the mainbuilding will keep your house andextension in-sync and solid roofs are notjust reserved for new build projects –they can also be used to refurbish anexisting orangery or conservatory.

COLOURS & WOODGRAINS Across the Classic UPVC, Contemporary Aluminium and Traditional Heritage ranges there are literally hundreds of colours, finishes and combinations to choose from. Even if you already have a very good idea about what you’re after, there’s stillplenty to consider such as a whether you’d prefer a textured woodgrain or a smooth surface finish, and whether you want thesame colour on both sides of the frames, or different colours on the inside such as Oak externally and White internally. Thecommon denominator of every colour and finish across the Classic UPVC, Contemporary Aluminium and Traditional Heritageranges is durability and long lasting charm.
