CONTENTS BACKGROUNDPresenting contemporary art in craft media by regional, national, and international artists since 1971, the Society for Contemporary Craft (SCC) offers cutting edge exhibitions focusing on multicultural diversity and non-mainstream art, as well as a range of studio workshops, community outreach programs, and a retail store. With its mission of engaging the public in creative experiences through contemporary craft, SCC offers meaningful art opportunities for more than 145,000 people a year through four core values: providing vital support for artists; filling critical gaps in public education; sharing cross-cultural perspectives; and using art to build community.

INTRO TO RAKUSat, October 2910am-3pmInstructor: Dan KuhnLevel: allCreate a unique, raku-fired vase! In the morning, students will glaze a ceramic vase and prepare it for raku firing. While the artwork fires, participants will take a 90-minute hiatus to explore the Strip District. In the afternoon, fired pieces will be removed from the kiln and cleaned to produce a marvelous, finished vessel. Tuition: $60Materials: $25

PORCELAIN PAPERCLAY: HANDBUILT VESSELSSat, November 510am-5pmInstructor: Danna RzecznikLevel: allExplore the expressive possibilities and technical advantages of hand-building with cone 6 porcelain paperclay. Students will learn the process of converting commercial porcelain into the easy-to-use and versatile material of paperclay. Participants will become acquainted with the woodshop and basic safety procedures while learning to operate a lathe. All students will leave with at least one finished project. Students will learn how to mix alginate and plaster silica molds in order to create wax, plaster, and glass casts. Use a found object or cast your own skin to recreate, enhance, and transform objects. Tuition: $160Materials Fee: $35

MOSAIC MAGICSat, October 2910am-5pmInstructor: Christina FisherLevel: allSimon Rodia’s Watts Towers and Isaiah Zagar’s Magic Gardens are folk art masterpieces. The artists’ methods are like free form jazz, creating kaleidoscopic structures out of scraps of glass and discarded crockery. In this workshop, students will learn similar mosaic methods to create small sculptures of their own design.Tuition: $80Materials Fee: $40

Using a variety of tools, students will manipulate solid materials including bone, antler, and tagua. HOLLOW CONSTRUCTIONSat & Sun, September 17 & 1810am-5pmVisiting Artist: Aran GalliganLevel: intermediateAdd dimension to your work with hollow construction. This workshop will push your soldering skills to the next level. Hollow construction utilizes sheet fabrication and uses multiple and complex solder seams. It can be used to make boxes, rings, lockets, beads, and much more. Basic metalworking experience (sawing, filing and soldering) is required.Tuition: $200Materials: $25

ETCH TO PRINT TO ADORNSat, October 110am-5pmInstructor: Jim Bové Level: allDiscover the salt-water etching process, a safer alternative to acid that can achieve dramatic results in a short period of time. Start with learning to set up an etching system and then make prints from your etched plates. In the afternoon, students will turn their plates into adornments.Tuition: $80Materials: $40

INTRO TO ENAMELINGSat, November 51pm-5pmInstructor: Jenny ButterfieldLevel: allExplore the versatile process of enameling. During this workshop students will learn the basics of fusing colored glass enamels to metal while playing with a variety of surface effects. Each participant will have the opportunity to produce a finished piece of jewelry.Tuition: $60Materials: $25

Have some studio experience under your belt? Use SCC’s studios to work on your own independent wood, metal, and mixed media projects. A variety of tools and equipment will be available during the four weekly sessions.

OPEN STUDIOS Take advantage of SCC’s new bench rental program. Rentals include a locked bench, locker, and use of the metals studio when workshops are not in session.

Students will have the opportunity to make at least three prints as they explore ways to incorporate pieces of paper, fabric, and found objects into their artwork. Tuition: $60Materials Fee: $25

In this one-day workshop, students will experiment with materials, stitches, and surface detail. These baskets are small and require very few tools, making the craft highly portable and easy to do anywhere. A variety of techniques and starting methods will be discussed and explored. The history of soft sculpture will be discussed, including its application in installation, wearable, and interactive art. TOOL MAKING, START TO FINISHFri, Sat & Sun September 9, 10 & 1110am-5pmInstructors: Linda Van Gehuchten and Glen GardnerLevel: allEveryone loves custom tools, and now you can make your own set! The first day will be spent turning wooden handles, and the following two days will be spent forging and forming the tool inserts. Instructors will be on site at both locations, assisting students as they complete their projects.Tuition: $300Materials Fee: $70

Contemporary Craft and Touchstone Center for the Arts are partnering to present making experiences utilizing both of their unique facilities. WORKSHOP INFORMATION• Students who register by mail or fax will receive a confirmation e-mail within seven days.• It is the responsibility of the student to appear in class on the correct day and time without additional notice.• Students’ photos may appear in SCC’s promotional materials.• SCC makes every effort to maintain the schedule of courses as announced in the catalog, however, SCC reserves the right to cancel any course or to substitute faculty when necessary.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDSClass and workshop cancellations are decided three business days before start date. If a class must be canceled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded.

1-2 Day WorkshopsStudent refund requests must be made at least three business days before a class begins. There will be a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without three business days notice. Processing of refunds takes approximately three weeks.

3-5 Day WorkshopsCancellations, 14 or more days notice:A student may cancel a registration for a 3, 4 or 5 day workshop up to two weeks prior to the start date of the class. There will be a $50 cancellation fee.Cancellations, fewer than 14 days notice:If a student cancels a registration within two weeks of the start date of a 3, 4 or 5 day workshop, there will be a 50% cancellation fee. There will be no refund issued without three business days notice of a cancellation.

MATERIALSInstructors may request that students have certain supplies. Students will receive a list of those supplies upon registration. Unless otherwise noted, materials fees are payable to the instructors for supplies provided by the instructors. Occasionally, the materials fee is built into the tuition fee and this is clearly noted next to the tuition fee.

ONE-ON-ONE & STUDIO RENTALS Private lessons in many media can be arranged upon request for students of all ages and skill levels. Private lessons are $50 per hour, with a two-hour minimum. In addition, independent studio use is available during open studio hours and by special arrangement.

Edward Eberle Retrospective September 9, 2016 – March 11, 2017Over the past three decades, Pittsburgh ceramic artist Edward Eberle has explored and tested the limits of porcelain. This retrospective brings works from the mid-1980s to the present into dialogue allowing audiences to discover the timeless and intriguing work of a true master. (Main Gallery)

Present at Creation October 14, 2016 – February 18, 2017Organized in conjunction with the Edward Eberle Retrospective, this exhibition features contemporary works by artists who have been directly mentored and impacted by Eberle.
