Dear Friends,
On behalf of the State of Nebraska, it’s my pleasure to welcome you to Nebraska’s annual Nepalese
Cultural Festival! During this time, the Nebraska Nepalese Society releases its annual newsletter to
heighten global awareness across our great state.
During my three visits to your country, I experienced the warm and hospitable nature of Nepal’s people.
As Nebraskans, we can appreciate the opportunity to learn more about those citizens who have chosen to
make Nebraska their home. According to the Nebraska Nepalese Society, there are now more than 3,000
Nepalese living in our state.
This week’s celebration serves as a wonderful opportunity to show our appreciation for these valued
Nebraskans. The Nebraska Nepalese Society’s work to raise money for earthquake relief efforts in
Nepal is a great example of your contribution to society.
Thank you for your continued work to preserve and celebrate the Nepalese history. By engaging
Nebraskans though education and new experiences, you are growing cultural diversity in our state.
Best wishes for another successful conference and continued growth in the Nebraska Nepalese Society.
Sincerely,
Pete Ricketts
Governor

Dear Nepalese Nebraskan Friends, Well-wishers and Sponsors
Festive Greetings and Best Wishes!
At the very outset, let me take this prime opportunity to extend my festive best wishes to you all along with my
editorial team. I hope you all will have happy and joyous time in the days ahead. More pertinently, I would like to
wish everyone feel welcome to read this annual issue of Nebraska Nepalese Society Annual Souvenir 2015 and
comment for its better improvement in terms of its contents, coverage and organization’s social and festive activities.
Education is the fundamental rights for mankind and inherent responsibility for all to be self-educated and contribute
towards others educational development. I am of the persuasion that education is more important than wealth and it
appears to be a bare necessity of life. Therefore, it is crucial that parents encourage their offspring to actively
participate in writing, editing and publication activities besides schooling and technology.
This current issue of the souvenir incorporates a synopsis of Nebraska Nepalese Society’s annual social and festive
activities, earthquake predicament in Nepal and NNS move to help earthquake stricken families and creative
presentations of Nepalese Nebraskans. Devastative earthquake of 7.9 magnitudes occurred (April 2015) in Nepal along
with frequent aftershocks for over three months that killed more than 9,000 people and left more than 2 million
homeless. Thousands of people who lost their homes are still living under tarps and thousands of children and adults
are deprived of going to schools and colleges as the physical infrastructures of colleges and schools have been
collapsed. Nebraska Nepalese Society and its team are doing the level best to help out earthquake stricken families in
Nepal.
I am indebted to all the article contributors, sponsors, donors, critiques and well-wishers for their invaluable help, co-
operation and guidance at ease publication of this volume. Correspondingly, I am thankful to my editorial team
members: Yadu Sapkota (Computer Designer/Editor) and Ganesh Pokharel (Marketing Executive) who diligently
moved earth and heaven to get this task of publication materialized – proud of you all.
I sincerely would like to record my sincere gratitude to Pete Ricketts, Nebraska Governor for providing us with his
companionship and the memo. Happy festive greetings and best wishes to everyone! May time remain unfailingly
forever favorable to you all!!!

NNS ANNUAL SOUVENIR 2015
Nebraska Nepalese Society's Move to Assist Earth Quake Stricken Families in Nepal
On April 25, 2015, a massive earthquake of 7.8 magnitudes on the Richter scale struck Nepal, followed
by a second major tremor, on May 12. The death toll from the two quakes stood at nearly 9,000, and
more than half a million people became homeless.
The Nebraska Nepalese Society (NNS) is a non-profit 501(c) organization established in 2001 to bring
the Nepalese community in Nebraska together. NNS played an active role to help in relief and recovery
from the aftermath and in sustained recovery in days to come. When we learned about the Earthquake in
Nepal, NNS set up a GoFundMe fundraising page to collect funds. Many Nepali Nebraskans stepped up
and we started collecting funds at the grassroots level on the streets. Some of us reached out to our
employers, colleagues and friends urging to show support for our organization. Thanks to all of our
collective efforts, we were able to make an impact in Nepal.
On April 28, 2015 met with the Governor of Nebraska Pete Ricketts. NNS had plans to meet with
Governor Ricketts later next week but thanks to Gyanendra Bhandari’s delegation, we were able to meet
with him much earlier. Governor Ricketts indicated personal connections to Nepal and read about NNS
efforts on Omaha World Herald. Governor Ricketts released a press release urging Nebraskans to
support NNS fundraising efforts.
On Thursday, April 30, a healthcare team consisting of doctors and nurses left for Nepal with medical
and other basic emergency supplies. Including shipping and supplies, NNS initially disbursed $9,000 in
total. In coordination with many other organizations on the ground initial disbursement made a big
impact in Nepal- collectively more than 600 patients were treated, 2000 food packages and 300 tents
distributed respectively, $1,500 in kind donations to local charities, and Over 50 volunteers were
involved in this coordinated effort, most of them worked more than 12 hours almost everyday- on either
the field or planning. Sunil Acharya did an incredible job representing NNS on the ground in Nepal. He
says, “Its very difficult to get things done on the ground but thanks to Bibekshil Nepali, Pipalbot
Samudayek Club, Iowa Nepalese Association, America Nepal Medical Foundation and many more
volunteers, organizations and individuals, we made a great deal of progress in very short time.” Sunil
coordinated very well and got many different organizations and individuals involved, the achievements
far exceed any dollar amount despite of logistical and security problems at ground zero. He says, “It was
not easy to work in ground zero; we had obstacles almost everywhere we went. We had to use local’s
help everywhere”. Bibekshil Nepali also played paramount role in coordinating and research at the grass
roots level, without their assistance it would have been impossible to get things done in the midst of all
the chaos on the ground. “This was once in a lifetime experience for me and I am glad I could go and
made differences in victims’ life directly. I proudly represented NNS, all our well wishers and
supporters.”
On May 3, 2015, NEBRASKA NEPALESE SOCIETY (NNS) board by unanimous decision created a
diverse NNS Crisis Management Team (CMT) responsible for devising a cohesive plan to address
the current crisis with the primary focus of, “how to mobilize the emergency relief funds?”. NNS
CMT Team mandated following earthquake funds request criteria:
Contact:- www.nnsociety.org, [email protected], https://www.facebook.com/NNSboard Page 14
NNS ANNUAL SOUVENIR 2015
1) NNS will not allocate to any funds to individual(s); NNS Earhtquke relief funds will only be
allocated to registered non-profit organization that has been operating before earthquake
(04/25/2015)
2) Conflict of Interest: none of the members of CMT can recommend/suggest any organization
of their interest. NNS CMT is neutral governing body and we are not able to lobby for or
against any organization(s).
3) Collateral to NNS:
a) Should be willing and able to provide details of where and how the fund will be utilized in great
details (for example, how much is spent in supplies, travel, etc.)
b) Designated point of contact is required (i.e. How can NNS follow up on the utilization of funds).
c) All the NNS funds allocated to selected origination(s) should strictly be used for Nepal
Earthquake related efforts only.
d) Email your proposal to CMT at: [email protected], make sure to cc NNS (at
[email protected]), subject line NNS Relief Funds Request, so that CMT can review the details
and follow up if more information is required and/or with a decision in writing.
As per CMT's advice to NNS Executive Board, NNS disbursed funds as follows
Rotary Club E Club (Nepal) $1,000.00
Lions Club Jorpati (Nepal) $1,500.00
Malai Nepal Pyaro (Nepal) $1,000.00
Janakalyan Youth Club (Nepal) $1,000.00
Sri Sathya Sai Sewa (Nepal) $1,000.00
CMT selected these organizations for fund allocation.
On June 26, 2015, NNS Special General Meeting was called to further discuss funds allocation and long
term disbursement. As per General Meeting majority decision, NNS set forth following criteria for funds
allocation:
Now that the immediate relief phase is over, we have to look into helping people with long-term reliefs
plans. Our primary focus is to disburse significant amount, if not all the funds at once. We as a
community would like to encourage each and every one of you to put your input as to where these funds
will make the best impact. NNS will start a selection process of proposals in order to disperse the
remaining of the relief fund collected.
These are the criteria to follow and please submit your proposals no later than 7/15/15. After the closing
date we will not accept any proposals and the selection process will start.
1) Proposals should be related to construction of school and or projects related to help kids, underserved
communities in Earthquake affected district in Nepal. Ensure to submit proposals with details about
school construction, such as where, (if any) which other organizations are involved, partnerships,
estimates etc.
Contact:- www.nnsociety.org, [email protected], https://www.facebook.com/NNSboard Page 15
NNS ANNUAL SOUVENIR 2015
2) NNS will also consider construction of and supporting a re-construction of village, health post or
other long-term, long lasting projects in earthquake affected area.
3) Please provide in details how the funds will be. Moreover, why should your proposal be selected?
4) Conflict of Interest: NNS is neutral governing body and we are not able to lobby for or against any
organization(s).
5) Collateral to NNS:
a) Should provide details of where and how the fund was utilized in details (receipts, pictures, etc)
b) Designated point of contact is required and on going progress report in a timely manner.
c) All the NNS funds allocated to selected origination(s) should strictly be used for Nepal Earthquake
related efforts only.
d) Email your proposal to [email protected] & [email protected] make
sure to subject line NNS Relief Funds Request.
The only reason NNS is able to do this is because of our volunteers and donors.
Giving them feedback in regards to on going process is very important so we expect all proposals to be
very professional and meaningful.
Please be patient and understanding with the process as we want to make sure the funds goes to where it
needed the most. We look forward to working with you.
Nebraska Nepalese Society NNS received many qualified proposals by stipulated deadline, July 15,
2015. There were many great proposals submissions requesting funds. We were impressed by quality
and quantity of submissions. On July 25th, 2015, NNS had a board meeting to discuss submitted
proposals and the board by unanimous majority decision preselected three proposals for further review.
They are 1) Room to read, 2) Himanchal Foundation (Mahabir Pun) 3) Bal Ujjwal High School, Kavre,
Nepal (coordinated by Kavre Samaj Sewa as per school request). NNS sent following notification to pre-
selected proposals ; NNS has a 17 member executive board, "the board" that makes unanimous decisions
on how to disburse these funds. NNS has a process, which must be followed in order to come to a
reasonable conclusion and a decision. On June 27, 2015, NNS had a special general body meeting which
has by unanimous decision mandated the following,
a) NNS board, by unanimous majority decision has to decide on a long term project in the education
sector with special precedence to reconstruction of a earthquake affected school in a rural but easily
accessible area in Nepal by the end of August.
b) If NNS Executive board does not have an adequate proposal, one that is satisfactory to NNS or
when NNS Executive Board cannot come to a majority unanimous decision, the general body
meeting has mandated all funds related to the Earthquake must be allocated to Nepal Prime Minister
Fund.
In other words, pick a school project and make a majority executive decision on a proposal submitted
within the July 15th timeframe or allocate funds to Prime Minister Fund. NNS received many qualified
proposals by stipulated deadline, July 15, 2015. There were many great proposals submissions
requesting funds. We were impressed by quality and quantity of submissions. On June 25th, 2015, NNS
Contact:- www.nnsociety.org, [email protected], https://www.facebook.com/NNSboard Page 16
NNS ANNUAL SOUVENIR 2015
had a board meeting to discuss submitted proposals and the board by unanimous majority decision
picked three proposals for further review.
The board has added following requirements
a. Organization must work on our behalf under Nebraska Nepalese Society (NNS) banner.
b. This fund must be allocated to one specific school project. This school must be accessible and
damaged by the Nepal Earthquake.
c. School building must be built on public property.
d. Organizations must follow all government rules, regulations, requirements, and process.
All government approvals must be submitted to NNS by deadline. These are typically
from Ministry of Education, District Education Office and other government related
bodies.
e. If this proposal is selected for final approval and disbursement of funds. Funds will be
disbursed in installment system. Funds for second phase will be disbursed once we receive
satisfactory report from school management committee and district education office.
Please reach out to us with all requirements and supporting documents by 08/03/2015.
In any cases when any documents are requested from NNS we will try our best to fulfill you request.
Thank you for your submission and we look forward to hearing from you soon.
NNS will only notify selected proposal and related organization by 08/31/2015 at the latest. If you
do not hear from us by 08/31/2015, we greatly appreciate your kind consideration for collaboration.
We wish you great success in your noble work and service.
On August 21, 2015 by unanimous decision NNS executive board decided to disburse funds to Bal
Ujjwal Secondary School located in Puranogaun, Dapcha, Kavreplanchowk. As per agreement with
Kavre Samaj Sewa and Bal Ujjwal, NNS will disburse funds incrementally, all funds will be
utilized for reconstruction as indicated in submitted proposal and agreement.
As we know the entire Nepalese community came together to help victims in Nepal. Because of all
of them we have been able to collect donations for relief fund in Nepal. Many volunteers worked
day and night to collect relief materials, money and spread the word to the community to raise these
funds. The only reason NNS is able to do this is because of our volunteers and donors.
It is with a tremendous feeling of heartfelt warmth that we at the Nebraska Nepalese Society (NNS)
say, Thank you for your support and generosity at this time of extreme need and difficulties. We are
forever grateful and humbled by your support.
Thank you everyone for all of your sacrifices, service and dedication to helping those in need.

Earthquake in Nepal
Sarina Kunwor
April 25th 11:56 everything changes. An
unexpected 7.8 magnitude earthquake
hits Nepal. Buildings, villages collapse,
homes are destroyed. People are asking
how did the earthquake start? Where
am I gonna live? They all are so
confused and expecting the answers to
the question that have been going
around for a while. The 7.8 magnitude
earthquake has left the region in chaos.
Can you even believe that there were
155 earthquakes this past year. The
earthquake was so big that Mount
Everest has an avalanche where 19
people at base camp were killed. The
horrible earthquake has affected more
than eight million people who live in
Nepal. This spiritual country has been
destroyed. Two weeks after the 7.8
magnitude earthquake there was an
7.3 aftershock on May 12th. There were
about 97 aftershocks. Wasn’t' the 7.8
magnitude earthquake already enough?
In the aftershocks sadly 9061 people
lost their lives and 23447 were injured.

My Home Country Nepal
My home country is Nepal.
I was born there.
It’s my favorite place to go.
And it’s my sweet little home.
There are beautiful mountains,
and big rivers.
And many temples are there too.
Nepal is a small country.
And it’s between India and China.
Buddha was born in Nepal.
And Nepalese are helpful and friendly.
I am happy to be a Nepalese.
I love my home country Nepal.

NNS ANNUAL SOUVENIR 2015
Mt. Everest
Have any of you ever climbed the
Mountain Everest? About 15% out of
100% people on earth have tried to climb
Mount Everest and many of them gave
up or even struggled to survive, but a
very few people made it to the top of the
peak. Mount Everest is located in Nepal.
In Nepal it is known as Sagarmatha and
in Tibet it is called Chomolungma. The
height of Mt. Everest is 8848 meters
which is 29,029 Ft. Mt. Everest was
established on May 29th 1953. It was
given its official name by the Royal
Geographical Society. It was
recommended by Andrew Waugh, named
the mountain after his predecessor in
the post with Sir George Everest.
Mountain Everest attracts over 100000
climbers each year. While climbing
Everest there are 2 climbing routes, one
from the Southwest of Nepal and the
other route is from North Tibet. No
matter what the weather was it never
stopped most of the tourists from
climbing. In 1964, George Mallory and
Andrew Irvine made a final attempt on
June 8th but never returned. They were
deciding whether they were the 1st to
reach the top, but later that year they
found Mallory's body in 1999 at 8155
Miter on the Northface, which meant
they never made it to the top. Tenzing
Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary were
the first two people to climb to the top of
Mt. Everest using the Southeast Route
(Nepal). Tenzing had reached 8595 Miter
on the 1st try but the next time he made
it. That was the history of the biggest
and tallest mountain on earth, the
Mount Everest. Until today, tourists all
over the world still visit Nepal and
attempt to climb Mount Everest.

My Summer Vacation
Over the Summer, we went to Chicago, Illinois. We stayed in
Chicago for 3 days. We stayed at a Hotel called Marriott Hotel.
While we were there, we went to the Willis Tower, the tallest tower in
the USA. When we got to the top, we took a lot of pictures. Then we
went tot the Navy Pier. We went on the Navy Pier for about 1 hr.
Then, next day we did some other fun activities. We also went to a
Nepali Restaurant to eat Nepali food. After a while we went to the
Hotel and Packed up. After that around 7:00 PM, we came back to
home.
