Ingleton Falls, YorshireOn 23rd February 12 Year 7-9 Wilmslow High students set off to Ingleton Falls for a 2 night residential. The aim of the visit was to promote a sense of team-working, enable students to work together to achieve positive

outcomes and to reflect on their current time in school and to aim higher.

The group embarked on a 5 mile hike through the Ingleton waterfalls, had a tour and demonstration at the Wensleydale cheese factory, swam at the local pool, participated in a team led treasure hunt throughout Ingleton village and explored nearby White Scar Caves.

Residing at the local ‘Pinewood Lodge’ the group also played board games together, took part in team activities and reflection groups enabling peer to peer coaching.

One Year 9 student commented “The trip was fantastic and helped me to use my skills to help others and work as a team with students I didn’t really know before the trip, it has made me think about how I can concentrate on doing this in school”.

The trip was led with G8way Coordinator Miss S Clarke and a selection of staff from the Handforth Youth Service. Miss S Clarke commented “The students got involved in all the activities and surpassed everyone’s expectations by working tremendously as a team. I hope they will utilise of these skills within the school environment”.

On the first day of the February half term, 30 students and 3 staff met at 3.30am in Manchester Airport to embark on a 6-day visit to Russia.

From curling to touring the Hermitage, this visit was a testament to what can be fitted into 6 days (when you factor out sleep)!

The first full day included a coach tour of Moscow with a visit to Novodevichy cemetery and lunch on Old Arbat Street. That evening we tried curling for the first time with varying degrees of success.

The second day began with a guided tour of the Kremlin and Lenin’s Mausoleum, where the body of Vladimir Lenin has been supposedly preserved. Next on the list was a visit to one of the cold war bunkers then dinner at the Hard Rock Café followed by a tour of the stunning metro stations, before crowding onto the overnight train from Moscow to St Petersburg.

Arriving in St Petersburg the next morning, we set off for breakfast and then a coach tour of the city. We visited the Church of the Saviour on the Spilled Blood, which is on the site where Alexander II was assassinated in 1881. The next stop was at the Peter and Paul

Cathedral where most of the Tsars are buried including the last Tsar and some of his family. A highlight of the trip was the folklore show that evening, Luke James (much to his horror) was even invited to join in with the Russian dancing on stage!

The penultimate day was a chance to visit the Peter and Paul Prison, which contrasted sharply with the ornate extravagance of the Hermitage. Finally, a Russian dinner out and some bowling followed a sobering visit to the Siege of Leningrad museum, where the true horrors of living through the Nazi blockade were revealed.

A visit to the Catherine Palace provided an opportunity to walk through its gardens and appreciate the exquisite Amber Room. After a brief visit to one of the churches that Nicholas II built and then lunch it was time to catch our return flight.

The visit was amazing and offered a brief insight into a country which saw 300 years of Tsarist regime followed by one of the bloodiest revolutions in history and then 7 decades of communist rule.

Manchester VisitOn Wednesday 2nd March some of our students took a trip to Manchester.

The focus was to further develop their personal and social development by planning their journey, buying tickets and utilising public transport. The educational benefit was huge; some of the students had never been on a train and some had never visited a city before.

As well as using public transport and successfully navigating our way around a city the students had the opportunity to visit the newly refurbished central library which was absolutely superb.

All in all an excellent day had by staff and students alike

PHSCE DayPHSCE day on Thursday was a great success. Students in every year had the opportunity to meet a range of speakers and memorable visitors especially Leonard Kaufmann, who spoke of his experiences on the Kindertransport and escaping Nazi Germany.

Students were entertained, engaged and energised by the ‘in/out’ debate between representatives of UKIP, Labour and the Liberal Democrats this will be put to good use during the English speaking planning.

Year 11 enjoyed the careers carousel and careers fair, while Year 13s braved the snow to carry out ‘health checks’ on a number of staff cars.

SMASHED IT! - New World Record setMore than six thousand children and adults from across the UK and Ireland have taken part in a Bumper Book Quiz and smashed the previous record of 2,679 people participating in a book quiz at the same time……and we were part of it!

One hundred and fourteen of our Year 7 students took part in the record breaking challenge last Monday during period 6. To read the article in the Guardian click on this link: http://tinyurl.com/zp242py

Language Leaders at Ashdene Primary SchoolThis week’s Language Leaders; Sophie Clark, Grace Wilson, Ruby Taylor (Year 9s), Jessica Davidson and Jack Bowen (Year 7s) inspired Year 6 students at Ashdene Primary School with their engaging German lesson on the topic clothes.

Not only did the students impress with their language skills, but also with their teaching and organisational skills. The lesson was planned by the Language Leaders and the CTL of MFL Mrs Coltman was astonished by how well the students managed their team

teaching, the classroom management and their confidence in using the target language.

The Year 6 students, who only study French, enjoyed their first German lesson and left the Language Leaders feeling proud when individual students thanked them for the great lesson.

Practice Makes Perfect This week Years 7 to 10 received an assembly on the subject of ‘practice making perfect.’

Ms Powley shared with them the findings of Danny Coyle’s book, The Talent Code, that deliberate practice, coaching and motivation can increase our talents. At Wilmslow High School this looks like our students: • Thinking hard in lessons• Doing plenty of homework practice• Seeing teachers as coaches• Reading for 30 minutes a day• Being prepared to fail and makes mistakes in order to become more successful in the long run

Whole Education100 teachers from over 20 primary and secondary schools from across the North West met in the school hall Thursday evening for the first ever Whole Education Teachmeet (or #TMWHS if you’re on twitter)! Teachers presented and explored issues as varied as assessing without levels, Shanghai maths, the use of technology in the classroom and developing students’ character.

It was a great evening for our teachers to learn from great practice elsewhere but also to share what we do in aiming to provide a broad

and balanced education for our students as part of our membership of the Whole Education network. If you want to know more, make sure you follow @whigh_tandl and @WholeEducation on twitter.

Year 12 PHSCE DayThe focus of PHSCE day for Year 12 students was on their post-18 choices. Students received a very informative presentation from Llinos Williams from the University of Bangor and learned about reasons to choose to go to university as well as some vital advice concerning personal statement writing.

Matthew Jones then gave an introductory talk about Unifrog and left students keen to register in order to start searching the site for post-18 options. Afternoon

attendance at the UCAS convention in Manchester enabled Year 12 students to talk to representatives from a broad range of universities as well as to replenish their supply of biros!

On the evening of Tuesday 1st March, parents of Year 12 students were invited to learn more about the current landscape of post-

18 options and the support students will be given from Mrs Cook. Llinos Williams also put parents in the picture about student finance. The presentations used are available on the school website.

HockeyIt’s been a great week for our boys and girls hockey teams. The U14 girls team played in their first round of the county outdoor finals on Saturday, beating Fallibroome 3-0 and King’s Macclesfield 4-0, qualifying for the next round of the county finals.

The U14 boys hockey team played in the North England Finals on Thursday at Leeds University, beating Manchester Grammar School 3-0, St. Peter’s York 2-0 and drawing with Egglescliffe 1-1. This meant that the boys finished the day as Champions of the North of England and for the first time ever, qualify for the All England National Finals to be held at the Olympic Hockey Stadium in London after Easter. Congratulations must go to our senior hockey captain, Saskia Swatland (below) on

her selection to the full U18 Hockey Squad. Saskia has been involved in the national set up for some time, attending numerous assessment days before her selection for the final squad.

She attended her first training camp with the final squad at Lilleshall last month and will be involved in training camps and fixtures against Holland, Scotland and Germany ahead of the European Championships in July.

FootballDespite all away games being called off due to frozen pitches, all home games survived. The 2nd XI won convincingly 8-1, but the U14 and U12 teams both lost 3-2 in games that could have gone either way. There was no fixture for the 1st XI on Saturday having played last Friday afternoon against Emmanuel College, Gateshead and winning 2 – 0. The girls football teams played their final fixtures in the Macclesfield and District Leagues this week. The U12 team beat Tytherington 5-1 but lost 2-0 to Poynton to finish as runners up in their competition. The U14s (right) went one better, beating Tytherington 9-1 and Poynton 2-0 to win their league.

The U16s also won their league but didn’t make it easy for themselves, eventually winning on sudden death penalties after the game finished 1-1 at the end of extra time.

NetballOur netball teams played All Hallows on Wednesday, winning all games: the U13s won19-7, the U14s won 27-0 and the U15s won 23-4.

Bring a Cadbury’s Creme Egg to School Day’We are desperately in need of Cadbury’s Creme Eggs to, help with our Easter Chick Appeal to fill all the knitted chicks that have been sent in by our supporters.

This year we are expecting to receive over 10,000 knitted chicks, which means we must obtain the same number of eggs whilst keeping our costs at an absolute low. As you can imagine, this is quite a challenge so we’d be incredibly grateful for any donations that the Wilmslow High School students could give.

Francis House is your local children’s hospice, supporting families of children with short life-expectancies from across the region. We rely on the support of the Manchester community to help raise our £3.6 million running costs, and the annual Easter Ap-peal is a wonderful way of bringing in these much needed funds.

If you are able to donate a Cadbury’s Egg, please place it/them in the container in main reception positioned in what was the High School Musical ticket box office before 8.45am each day up until Friday March 11th.

Francis House Children’s Hospice is currently appealing for

donations of Cadbury’s Creme Eggs to fill thousands of knitted chicks, ready to be sold in local

primary schools.

Get cracking - start collecting

eggs today!

Thank you for your support.
