In late 2013 integrated international oil and gas company OMV chose Port Nelson as the location for it to replace the mooring swivel on its FPSO vessel MV Raroa.

Why Nelson? MV Raroa

The spirit and professional attitude of the team was extraordinary and complemented OMV’s expertise. Everyone involved gave their best to complete a very large scope of work within a tight timeframe, but even more importantly, it was all done in a safe and efficient manner without a single lost time accident.

Peter Zeilinger, Managing Director, OMV New Zealand.

The 252m long and 42m wide converted tanker is based at the Maari field, 80km off the South Taranaki coast and is the largest vessel to have entered the Port to date. The work programme for the MV Raroa was completed efficiently and ahead of schedule in October 2013, taking less than four weeks in total.

Kernohan Engineering Ltd (KEL) provided a dedicated project management team for the onboard and onshore aspects of the FPSO

Raroa project. This was spearheaded by a fulltime KEL project manager.

KEL used its strong working relationship with other local engineering companies to repair and/or manufacture parts as and when required. They also worked with other suppliers to respond to any and all of OMV’s requirements across a range of areas, including transport, provedoring, electrical services and logistics.

Port Nelson is in the heart of one of New Zealand’s most beautiful regions, minutes away from the Nelson CBD and its arts, café and recreational amenities.

Nelson regularly vies for the title of the highest annual sunshine hours in New Zealand. Its benign climate provides great working conditions.

The Nelson region has excellent social infrastructure, including hospitals, education facilities, an airport, and communications infrastructure.

Nelson Hospital is an acute, regional base hospital offering emergency, medical, surgical and other services. The hospital has a helipad for emergency cases.

Approximately 800,000 passengers pass through Nelson Airport’s terminal each year. The airport has excellent

connectivity with international routes via multiple daily flights to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

A variety of aviation-related operations are based at the airport, including fixed-wing and helicopter general charter services and maintenance and engineering facilities, flight training and rescue air services.

Nelson Airport is home to Air New Zealand Regional Maintenance which services its entire ATR and Q300 fleet, and is also the New Zealand headquarters of HNZ Global, one of Australasia’s largest, most diverse and experienced helicopter operators.
