A Biblical Challenge to a Brutal God and Eternal Flames

God is loving and compassionate. This is first and foremost the character of our Creator, as revealed in the Word of God. Moses once heard these reassuring words about God’s love and forgiveness that today resound in our own sin-bent hearts: “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin,” (Exodus 34:6). A kind and love-filled Author of Life is a truth that is personally proven through the life and work of Heaven’s royal Son, Jesus Christ. His willingness to lower Himself to a womb and infant’s birth, and ultimately to a painful and bloody death that we might be saved, proves His great love for mankind. However, God’s judgment of sin and sinners is also clearly stamped out in the Scriptures, and is referred to often as “death.” The same verse in Exodus 34:6 continues, “Yet He does not leave the guilty unpunished,” and Romans 6:23 reaffirms, “the wages of sin is death.” The definition of death is “a permanent cessation of all vital functions: the end of life,” according the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. However, most Christians believe nearly the opposite that “death” for sinners is “a permanent continuation of the vital functions: the beginning of life” in hell. Hell is real. But does God choose the excruciating torture of a fiery hell lasting for endless ages to be the ultimate punishment the Scriptures call death? Is there at this very moment, billions of souls crying out in hell for some kind of relief? Ignored by God and mostly forgotten in our daily lives? If you believe this to be true, have you ever been touched by those caught in this burning chastisement? We’ve all had family members and friends who have passed away, but they did not know Christ as their Savior. In fact, every single day, 150,000 people die on Planet Earth. Is a fiery oven of eternal torment the fate for the vast majority of these souls? If so, hell’s population would swell by over a million men, women and children each and every week; that’s 54,000,000 every year. Even one soul entering hell should give us pause, but we are too busy and too disconnected to think about such things. It’s paradoxical that people can be riveted to the news about 33 miners trapped below ground in a Chilean mine for two months, when, if true, as many as 6,000 precious souls per minute die and enter a trapped prison, in an inescapable fiery dungeon called hell. If you, deep down, believe hell is as real as the miners’ pit, you should be just as moved and riveted by their fate. The number of victims is much higher and their condition much more severe. Why do we liberally accept the teaching that God will, for eternal ages, torture and scorch with fiery flame the vast majority of humans who have graced our planet? This view is predicated on the literal reading of words such as “eternal”, “everlasting” and “forever” in the Bible. That seems reasonable, on the surface; and Christians have been taught this view from early childhood, so it’s just accepted… no questions asked. However, very few have studied God’s Word to explore the Hebraic usage of these words, along with the vast Biblical evidence, which clearly leads to a different conclusion. Even less have given serious thought to what this truly means in terms of punishment for our fellow human beings, and ultimately what it says about God.

It’s true; the Scriptures teach that many will one day end up in the flames of hell. However, the ultimate question is this: “Will God persecute these loved ones for ages, without end, or finally bring about their demise and end their agony?” If an unending agonizing hell awaits all sinners, including some of our own loved ones, our hearts should scream out “why, God?” Hell is gruesome and horrible! In the future Kingdom we will have to face the reality of hell; and, doing so, I know out of concern you would ask God face to face, “why are you doing this?” And so, if you have not considered the sheer violence and brutality of eternal flames, now is the time to reflect upon 15 minutes in hell.

The Brutality of Fire

Today, we believe that governments who torture their citizens to be barbaric and out of touch. As citizens of decency, we do not condone physical torture by the authorities--even when the most horrendous crimes have been committed. What stops us from chopping off of fingers in our society? Is it not our God-given standard of morality? Jesus pushed back against hatred in our society, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,” Matthew 5:43-44. In 2010, a Gaza man set his own son on fire for simply misbehaving (see the article). It is despicable. We cringe when we hear about fathers who have battered their wives, or burned and tortured their children as acts of brutality. Their behavior sickens us. Yet, as Christians we say that God is loving and kind with one breath, and with the next that He will burn men, women and children for eternity. When questioned, we retort, “Well, that’s what the Bible says!” But does it? When considered, this teaching makes little sense, and the punishment serves no real purpose other than to inflict brutality---for it does not lead to a changed life or the building of character. The response often heard is that “God is just. He can do what He pleases.” And, “God provided the escape through His Son Jesus, and if we don’t take His gift, it’s our fault.” Yes, the wonderful gift of life is free. Jesus is our Savior, and through His

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- A father from Jabaliya refugee camp in north Gaza killed his son by setting fire to him because the boy refused to help the family pick olives, police said. Security forces identified the father as AN, and said the 40-year-old threatened to torch his son Mohammad, 14, when he refused to help him harvest olives. The father then sent the boy's brother to get Benzene and gave him 2 shekels ($0.50) to buy a lighter. Police said AN chased Mohammad into the bathroom, and poured fuel over him. The boy managed to escape and ran towards his grandmother's house next door, but his father caught him and set alight to him. Mohammad's grandmother told police that she opened the door to find her grandson's body burned. Mohammad's father was arrested and questioned by police, who said he has been charged with murder.

sacrifice on the cross we can have life. But does rejection automatically lead to relentless torture--day and night, for eternity? We want to examine the popular doctrine of unending torture, and read what the

Scriptures say about the subject. But first, let’s pause from the rhetoric and doctrinal dogma we’ve been taught since childhood to bring this teaching to a more personal level. After all, we are talking about the fate of flesh and blood human beings from all walks of life from around the globe; but, we are also considering the future of individuals in our lives we know and love. So, let’s invest some time

getting to what should be the core issue for our belief system and Christianity—God’s character. We have the right to ask, to question and to probe; it is a God-given right. Think of a person you love dearly in your life. It could be a son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, relative or friend. Enter his/her name here: _______________________. Let’s say he/she ultimately rejects Christ and ends up grief-stricken in hell fire. However, in Heaven and in the midst of all the wonderful celebrations, you can’t get your loved one out of your mind. You know that he/she must be going insane and in frantic fear. No food or water. No sleep and no way to escape; just searing flames. Out of deep love and concern, you run to Jesus and beg, “Can you please put my loved one out of his/her misery? Hasn’t this gone on long enough?” But Jesus says, “No, _______________ will be confined in the pit of fire for all eternity.” You would certainly reply, “But, even one moment longer is too long. You promised ‘no more death or mourning or crying or pain,’ but you plan on torturing ________________ for billions and billions of years?” Jesus then retorts, “Well, you might as well get used to it!” “Oh my Lord,” you plead, “for what purpose?” “But,” Jesus says, “Must I have a reason? I am the Son of GOD. You know who I am. It’s fair punishment for rejecting me; now, give me a hug and forget it!”

You would surely question such a Supreme Leader. “God so loved” the world and everyone in it. And, if His love never fails, why do His actions prove otherwise? Our conscience would cry out “the punishment clearly outweighs the crime.” There would be outrage in Heaven. What kind of Paradise would we have? We suffer greatly when our children are experiencing any type of pain, sorrow or loss. How could you as a loving parent simply dismiss the plight of your own child, knowing he or she was writhing and chocking in sweltering flames day and night somewhere in the universe?

There’s only one alternative: God administers amnesia. We don’t remember that once we had sons, daughters, grandchildren, aunts and uncles. Is that what God has planned for us? I don’t think so. God won’t have to abolish our memories in order to extinguish our hatred for Him for torturing our loved ones for eternity. Nor will He have to strip us of our memories or ability to feel sympathy for those we love so dearly. We are not going to be mindless robots.

Aside from the sheer ugliness of the white-hot fire, the length of the purported abuse, according to Christian teachers, is monumental and mind-blowing. How long is “eternal” burning flames and the torment of fire, if indeed, this is God’s plan for the fallen masses? How do we even begin to grasp the duration of this violence? Consider the next few pages, which are at best an inadequate attempt to offer you a better perspective on the duration of this fiery torment—15 minutes in hell.
