L ooking back at 225 years of history, it is amazing just

how adaptable a company has to be and how it can

develop so consistently at the same time. During this

time, a craftsman‘s business has bloomed into a Group that

employs more than 10,400 people in over 110 companies

in more than 70 countries around the world. The world is

our market – this is the BAUER Group‘s motto, which has

greatly shaped the company‘s activities in recent years.

The divisions and companies manage themselves on an

independent basis within the Group. This has been and

continues to be a huge bonus. Despite this international

focus, the Group has its feet fi rmly on the ground. Bauer

remains a family business, whose values and management

principles shape the entire Group. Every Group employee

lives these values and principles when dealing with custo-

mers, partners, and friends, each and every day.

Passion for progress – this slogan refl ects the huge inno-

vative strength that is revealed when developing construc-

tion methods or our machinery and when launching new

business segments. Our employees‘ personal drive and

motivation have made us into one of the global leaders in

the specialist foundation engineering sector and the leading

global manufacturer of specialist foundation engineering

equipment.

Today, Bauer is a name that is associated with the most

diffi cult and largest foundation works in the world that are

performed with powerful, innovative and highly effi cient

machinery. We are also continuously gaining strength in

the environmental technology business and in the sector

for products and services for water and natural resources.

We are going to jointly build our future on the bedrock of

this success. We are proud of our achievements and look

forward to our future tasks with joy and enthusiasm.

Sincerely,

Prof. Thomas Bauer

The BAUER Group

Construction Equipment Resources

BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH, the

original parent company of the BAUER

Group, has been a major driving force

in the development of specialist foun-

dation engineering, and carries out

projects all over the world. Bauer Spe-

zialtiefbau is organized on a regional

basis in Germany, and operates on

all the world‘s continents with over

50 subsidiaries and branch offi ces.

Market trends have meant that most

of the company’s revenues are now

generated outside of Germany. Bauer

has major subsidiaries and branch

offi ces in the United Arab Emirates,

Malaysia, Egypt and the USA among

other locations. Bauer has built up net-

works in numerous regions around

the world, enabling it to acquire and

execute contracts both in the countries

in which it is represented and in neigh-

boring countries, using its own machi-

nery and in-house engineering consul-

tancy. In addition to the predominant

fi eld of specialist foundation enginee-

ring, Group companies SCHACHTBAU

NORDHAUSEN GmbH, SPESA Spe-

zialbau und Sanierung GmbH and

Wöhr + Bauer GmbH also carry out

general construction activities such as

civil engineering, environmental engi-

neering and project development.

The BAUER Maschinen Group is the

world market leader in the development

and manufacture of specialist founda-

tion engineering equipment. BAUER

Maschinen GmbH – the holding com-

pany for the subsidiaries – designs and

builds heavy-duty drilling rigs, trench

cutters, grab systems, vibrators and

deep drilling rigs, as well as the related

tooling, at its plants in Schrobenhau-

sen, Aresing and Edelshausen. The

company also operates manufacturing

facilities in the USA, Russia, China,

Malaysia, Italy, Singapore and Turkey.

It is supplied with components from

within the BAUER Group by Schacht-

bau Nordhausen and Olbersdorfer

Guß. The BAUER Maschinen Group

operates a global sales and service

network.

The Resources segment is focused

on products and services in the areas

of water, environment and natural

resources. BAUER Resources GmbH

is the holding company, under the

umbrella of which the subsidiaries

operate as full-service providers.

Resources and its subsidiaries focuses

on projects all over the world. In the

respective regions, management has

access to the professionally focused

competence centers of Water Treat-

ment, Process and Biotechnology, En-

vironmental Rehabilitation and Waste

Management, Drilling Technologies and

Well Drilling. They pool the know-how

and support of the operating compa-

nies in their activities.

T he BAUER Group is a leading provider of services,

equipment and products dealing with ground and

groundwater. During its colorful history, the company

has changed many times, discovered new business seg-

ments and reached out into the world. But one important

factor has always remained in focus – the company struc-

ture based on a family business.

The origins of the family business from Schrobenhausen

date back to 1790 when Sebastian Bauer from Deggendorf

acquired a coppersmith‘s shop. Coppersmiths worked

mainly for breweries, though also producing household

items.

Technical progress led to a decline in the coppersmith‘s

craft. The fourth-generation Bauer to run the family business,

Andreas Bauer (1858 to 1933), took it in a new direction.

He discovered that it was possible to sink artesian wells in

Schrobenhausen. The Directorate General of the Royal Bava-

rian Transport Corporation commissioned him to construct

the well for the waterhouse at Schrobenhausen Station on

the new railway line between Augsburg and Ingolstadt.

After the First World War, the representative of the next

generation, engineer Karl Bauer (1894 to 1956), extended

this expertise in well drilling. A major advance came in 1928,

with the construction of the central water supply system

for Schrobenhausen – a home-town job which Karl Bauer

devoted all his energies to acquiring. He then had a project

under his belt which he could put forward as a reference,

and the water supply and well drilling business expanded

all across Bavaria.

Like for many other companies, the Second World War

was also a major setback to the Bauer business. More and

more of its employees were called up for military service,

and many of them never returned. When the war was over,

many local authorities needed wells and water pipes. The

work was hard. The largest and most important item of

construction equipment was the tripod.

The next generation of the family, in the person of Karlheinz

Bauer (born in 1928), entered the business during this start-

up phase. He was already well established in the business

when his father unexpectedly died in 1956. While the business

was still under the management of Karl Bauer the fi rst works

in the fi eld of foundation engineering – subsequently termed

specialist foundation engineering by Dr. Karlheinz Bauer – had

been carried out.

In the 1950s Bauer moved more and more into this fi eld.

A key development was the invention of the grout injection

anchor in 1958. The company was contracted to construct

a large, exposed excavation pit with anchored pile walls for

the Bayerische Rundfunk (Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation)

center in Munich. Shafts were dug outside of the piled walls,

and the anchors shall be drilled into these shafts and secured

in place. But the boreholes drifted and did not reach the

shafts. With project deadline closing in, Bauer came up

with the idea of injecting cement into the tip of the anchor

through the drill casing. The anchors held, and the Bauer

anchor was born.

The new technique was devised just in time to be used

on the underground rail system construction projects in

major German cities during the 1960s. Bauer underwent

strong growth. Sales boomed, as did workforce numbers.

Following initial contracts outside of Germany in Switzer-

land and Austria, Bauer was soon responding to the major

demand for construction engineering due to the oil boom,

carrying out projects in Libya and Saudi Arabia. However,

there was a lack of specialized machinery for the new tech-

niques, for pile driving and for anchoring. Consequently, the

company decided to design and manufacture a brand new

anchor drilling rig, and in 1969, the fi rst UBW 01 anchor

drilling unit rolled off the production line. It was followed in

1976 by the fi rst rotary drilling rig, the BG 7, and in 1984

by the trench cutter. It was also in 1984 that the fi rst large-

scale equipment manufacturing workshop was built – today‘s

Schrobenhausen plant.

6 THE BAUER GROUP

With Prof. Dipl.-Kfm.Thomas Bauer (born 1955), the seventh

generation of the Bauer family joined the company in 1982.

During his time at the family business, he began as a com-

mercial manager of the International Division, then took over

as general commercial manager and plant manager. From

1986 onward he was the sole managing director of the com-

pany. As construction volumes in the Middle East began to

fall, Bauer found new markets in the Far East and in other

regions of the world. The internationalization of the business

was driven forward concertedly. The growing equipment busi-

ness now demanded its own dedicated selling organization.

Towards the end of the 1980s, Thomas Bauer undertook

targeted steps to strengthen the existing business segments

by means of strategic additions. He looked to move Bauer

into new business fi elds related to specialist foundation en-

gineering so as to be able to offer full-service packages and

operate as a general contractor. The fi rst steps were made

with the founding of Wöhr + Bauer GmbH and of BAUER

und MOURIK Umwelttechnik GmbH & Co.

During this period the market situation in Germany changed

fundamentally. The year 1989 became a turning point in

German history, with the fall of the Berlin Wall. German reuni-

fi cation opened up major new opportunities for the con-

struction industry. In the summer of 1992, Bauer acquired

SCHACHTBAU NORDHAUSEN GmbH from the Treuhand-

anstalt privatization agency. The company had been involved

in projects throughout the entire GDR mining sector and had

carried out major specialist foundation engineering projects

throughout the Eastern Block.

The 1990s were an exciting time for everyone involved in the

construction industry. The enormous demand for construc-

tion work following German reunifi cation quickly attracted

foreign competitors, and led to a ruinous price war. The boom

of the early years – during which Bauer constructed large

numbers of excavation pits in Berlin, Leipzig, and Dresden –

lasted only until 1995.

Over the following critical years, Bauer was able to keep its

balance on its international construction operations and the

worldwide equipment sales whilst other renowned German

construction companies did not survive the tough competi-

tion. The Far East crisis of 1998/99 also impacted heavily

on the equipment business. The company‘s management

employed all its skills and effort to guide the business

through the crisis.

After the year 2000, targeted measures were put in place

to update the business in line with the changing world. The

already advanced process of internationalization helped to

strengthen it in all areas. Soon more than 80 percent of the

equipment business total sales were being generated outside

of Germany, while the international sales of the specialist foun-

dation engineering business were three times its domestic

sales.

In 2001 a parting of the ways occurred. BAUER Maschinen

GmbH, which had previously been a division of BAUER

Spezialtiefbau GmbH, became an independent entity. BAUER

AG, founded in 1994 as a holding company, took on service

functions for the operating companies. Since that time,

Thomas Bauer has been Chairman of the Management Board

of the parent company. The operating companies are headed

by their own directors.

The biggest boom during this period was enjoyed by the

equipment business. In 2002, a large-scale factory hall with

extensive grounds was acquired in Aresing near Schroben-

hausen. This site offered the ideal setting for effi cient assembly

of the large machinery. The equipment business grew, new

subsidiaries were acquired, and new capacities had to be

built up. Manufacturing facilities were also established in

the USA, Russia, China and Malaysia. During this phase the

company was preparing for its stock market listing – a major

step in the history. As well as new shares, the shares held by

Deutsche Beteiligungs AG, which had been a share-

holder in BAUER AG since 1996, also came on the market.

48.19 percent of the shares were retained by the Bauer

family. On July 4th, 2006 BAUER AG was listed on the

Frankfurt Stock Exchange for the fi rst time.

Dipl.-Ing. Karl Bauer (left) turned the company into an industrial well

builder known throughout Bavaria. Dr.-Ing. Karlheinz Bauer led the com-

pany onto the international stage, taking it into the field of specialist

foundation engineering and launching equipment manufacturing opera-

tions. Prof. Dipl.-Kfm. Thomas Bauer shaped the current global Group,

with a network of operations on every continent.

ChronicleIn the spring of 2007 the market presence of the BAUER

Group was restructured. Alongside the two pillars Construc-

tion and Equipment, a third segment – Resources – was

established, which specializes in water, environment and

natural resources – a concept for the future.

In the years 2007 to 2009, the largest investment program

in the company‘s history was implemented. A new adminis-

tration block was built at the Group‘s head offi ce in Schroben-

hausen. After moving into the new building, the company set

about modernizing the existing main block. At the machinery

manufacturing plant in Aresing, major building works were

needed to handle the growth in production. The Edelshausen

plant was expanded with a welding shop, a turning shop and

anchor production. At the plant of SCHACHTBAU NORD-

HAUSEN GmbH, the welding shop facilities were expanded.

A facility for the manufacture of drilling rigs and anchor drilling

rigs was constructed in Conroe, Texas, USA, in order to es-

tablish a production presence in the dollar zone and to get

closer to the company‘s customers. The plants in Shanghai

and Tianjin, China, were expanded.

The fi nancial crisis of 2009 and the subsequent Euro currency

and debt crisis in the European Union also impacted on the

construction and machinery manufacturing sectors. In 2010,

among this diffi cult period, Bauer constructed the world‘s

largest reed bed treatment plant in Oman. This was a pionee-

ring project, spanning 450 soccer pitches at the time and

expanded even further later on. New business segments

also started to show their fi rst successes. The intensive de-

velopments for deep drilling rigs for the oil and gas industry

led to the fi rst sales in 2011. In the same year, the underwa-

ter drilling business sunk the foundation for a tidal turbine

near Scotland under the most diffi cult of conditions.

In 2012, the company‘s workforce topped 10,000 for the

fi rst time. Major projects show clearly that Bauer sets stan-

dards in specialist foundation engineering. The Burj Khalifa

is built on Bauer piles, and the company has also constructed

the foundations for the Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi

Arabia, and the Laktha Tower in St. Petersburg, Russia,

the new tallest buildings in the world and Europe.

The company celebrated its 225th anniversary in 2015 during

hard times. The company went through some turbulent years

on account of the many problems in the world, combined with

diffi cult projects. The largest contract for the Group received

by the environmental business for the remediation of a former

landfi ll in Grenzach-Wyhlen near the Swiss border points to-

ward a promising future for the business with a long tradition.

Specialist foundation engi-neering – foundations for

unique construction projects

Most major construction projects around the world

requiring comprehensive specialist foundation en-

gineering services will at some point engage Bauer.

From complex excavation pits, skyscraper and bridge foun-

dations to seals for large dams – the Bauer engineers always

have the right solution for such challenges. Always with them:

rotary drilling rigs, duty-cycle cranes and cutters made by the

company‘s own equipment business. Bauer is the global

technological leader in this fi eld. Together with the planning

and construction services, the highly effi cient and innovative

machines turn projects into reality.

The tallest buildings in the world are standing on Bauer piles.

The tallest skyscraper so far, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai meas-

uring 828 meters, was opened at an inauguration ceremony

in 2010. The foundation works were completed in 2004.

Bauer sunk 940 piles up to 50 meters deep.

The future tallest building, the Kingdom Tower in Jeddah,

Saudi Arabia, will exceed 1,000 meters in height and will

be completed by 2018. Bauer set new standards during its

foundation works in 2013. The world‘s longest kelly bar –

fi ve times as long as a standard kelly – was developed and

constructed specially for the 270 piles that had to be sunk

up to 109 meters deep.

Europe will also have a new record tower by 2018 – the

Lakhta Tower in St. Petersburg, Russia. The new headquar-

ters of the energy company Gazprom will be 462 meters

tall. Bauer sunk 264 piles up to 82 meters deep. The sur-

rounding buildings and parking garages are also construc-

ted on more than 1,000 Bauer piles.

But Bauer‘s services are not only in demand for tall buil-

dings – they are also popular for the longest bridges in the

world. Until the end of 2014, Bauer constructed part of

the foundations for a sea bridge between Hong Kong and

Macao, which will be 50 kilometers long. The piles are up

to 2.5 meters in diameter and were sunk up to 115 meters

deep. The rotary drilling rigs used for the work were taken

to their sites on pontoons. The supplies for the construction

site were also transported on pontoons.

The name Bauer is associated with many unique construc-

tion projects around the world – foundations for major pro-

jects.
