Launch of shuttle Discoverydelayed again to late Friday
BEIJING, 28 Aug—NASA postponed again thelaunch try of the space shuttle Discovery from earlyFriday morning to late Friday night, according to mediareports on Friday. NASA said the liftoff time will be11:59 pm EDT (0359 29 Aug GMT). NASA made thisdecision on Thursday to give engineers additional timeto make sure that a hydrogen fuel valve in the shuttle’sengine compartment will function normally duringfueling.
The critical valve appeared to malfunction on Tuesdaymidway through the fueling process for the Wednesdaymorning launch. The valve was tested on Wednesday night, and all the normal results indicated that it was a problemwith a sensor rather than the valve itself.
It will be the third try for NASA to launch Discovery. The previous two delays were caused by the stormyweather early Tuesday and the valve glitch later that day.Discovery is bound for the International Space Station(ISS) with seven crew members on board and more than7.5 tons of supplies and equipment. If it cannot lift offby the end of August, Discovery would not possiblylaunch until 17 Oct due to space traffic conflicts at theISS. — Xinhua

Tests raise life extension hopesA drug discovered in the soil of a South Pacific island may help to fight the
ageing process, research suggests. When US scientists treated old mice withrapamycin it extended their expected lifespan by up to 38%.
The findings, published in the journal Nature, raise the prospect of being ableto slow down the ageing process in older people.
However, a UK expert warned against using the drug to try to extend lifespan,as it can suppress immunity.
We believe this is the first convincing evidence that the ageing process can beslowed and lifespan can be extended by a drug therapy starting at an advanced age.

Teetotallers suffer more than heavy drinkersLONDON , 28 Aug—
People who spurn alcoholtend to be miserable socialmisfits, research suggests.
Teetotallers hadsignificantly higher levelsof depression and anxietythan moderate drinkers, astudy found. They werealso likely to lack socialskills, it was claimed.
Abstainers sufferedeven more mental pro-blems than the heaviestdrinkers who consumed
too much alcohol. The happiest folk werethose who averaged twoglasses of wine, a bottleof beer, or a shot of spiritsa week, the British andNorwegian scientistsdiscovered. One reason
why non-drinkers weremore gloomy could bethat they have few friends, the study, which ques-tioned almost 40,000Norwegians, suggests inthe journal ‘Addiction’.

Laughing gas biggest threatto ozone layer
DUBLIN , 28 Aug — Nitrous oxide or ‘laughing gas’ hasbecome the main man-made substance damaging theplanet’s protective ozone layer and is likely to remain sothroughout the century, scientists said.
The study, by the US National Oceanic andAtmospheric Administration, said tighter limits onemissions of nitrous oxide, which is also a powerfulgreenhouse gas, would be a “win-win for both ozone andthe climate”. “Nitrous oxide emission currently is thesingle most important ozone-depleting substance emissionand is expected to remain the largest throughout the 21stcentury,” the scientists wrote in yesterday’s edition of thejournal ‘Science’.
Nitrous oxide has overtaken chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs) as the main ozone threat.About 10 million tonnesof nitrous oxide a year — a third of world emissions —come from human activities including fertilisers, fossilfuels, livestock manure and industry. Laughing gas isperhaps best known as an anaesthetic. —Internet

PARIS, 28 Aug—US technology giant Apple onFriday rejected reports that overheating batterieshad caused some of its iPhone devices to explodein users’ hands, blaming incidents in France on“external pressure”.
French authorities have opened an investigationinto the safety of the cult smartphone, followingclaims by several users in France and elsewherethat their iPhone screens had shattered in adangerous manner during use.
“As of today, there has been no confirmedincident linked to battery overheating in the iPhone3GS, and the number of cases we are investigatingamounts to less than a dozen,” the firm said in astatement to AFP.

Myanmar is known for ancient cultural herit-age, customs and traditions of the national races andbeautiful sceneries, and this attracts foreign visitors.
While I was on a tour of Shan State (South) inthe previous month, I made a visit to the Inlay Lake bymotorboat under the arrangement of Shan State Irri-gation Department. I had an opportunity to studymeasures for beautifying the Inlay Lake as well asproducts of the natives of the Inlay region. The greensurface of the lake with Shan mountain ranges in thebackground drew everyone’s attention.
There I saw tourists individually and on pack-age tours. On arrival at Sein Thamadi Goldsmith ofSilversmith Industry on a study visit, owner U SanLin warmly welcomed us. We enjoyed Inlay tradi-tional foods served by him and the conversation fromwhich we gained lots of knowledge.
U San Lin said, “Sein Thamadi emerged thanksto the State. In the past it was not even known in theregion. That’s why I am grateful to the State.” He alsoexplained, “There were very few silversmith industriesbefore 1988. There were more in 1996—the VisitMyanmar Year. Now the whole village is engaging inthis business.” We saw in the shop not only gold wareand but also sliverware such as bowls, harps and jugsincluding a 100-year-old silver betel box.
