Technologies
Opportunity in Healthcare
• Global demographic and health trends are rendering healthcare unsustainable
• We need a dramatic increase in productivity and efficiency
• New technologies will be a major part of the solution
NZ’s Medical Device Sector in 2013
• Comprises ~110 companies
– ~90% micro/SMEs <$5M turnover
– ~10% large >$20M turnover: Fisher & Paykel, Orion Health, Ebos, Dynamic Controls
• MTANZ estimates a $1.4bn contribution to GDP from devices, software & informatics
• Projected to double in 3-5 years
NZ can compete in global markets – some examples of niche areas of strength ..
• Smart devices – NMR – high frequency ultrasound – spectral X-ray technology for molecular imaging – molecular scale optical imaging techniques – needle-free injection technologies – robotic devices for care of the aged
• Smart algorithms, models & software – computational physiology for organs & organ systems – physiological models for intensive care.
• Smart informatics – NZ is particularly well-suited to facilitate integration of home &
community-based healthcare by connecting technologies with family doctors, community clinics & DHBs
Growing the Sector Together
CMDT is NZ’s medical technology network
Accelerates collaboration across industry, research & clinic
Enables critical mass & capture of synergies
Leverages niche areas of global strength
