The First year students visited Siva Food Drinks, Poonamallee High Road, Chennai on 15th Jan. 2009. They gained experiential knowledge about Food Microbiology, Food Packaging and Sensory Evaluation of the Food Juices manufactured at the centre.

The III year B.Sc. students undertook a Study trip to Sri Ramachandra University Porur, Chennai The laboratory visit included the following: Dept. of Human Genetics, Molecular Genetics Laboratory,

Tissue Culture Room, Dosimetry Laboratory, Drosophila Laboratory, Central Research Facility. These visits have been an enriching learning experience for our students enhancing their practical knowledge and their awareness on advanced instrumentation techniques used in research.

The I year students visited the Livestock Research Station, Kattupakkam (TANUVAS) on 18th January 2010. The students were exposed to various practices relating to Poultry farming, Dairy Farming, breeding of rabbits, rearing of different varieties of sheep and goat. Ostrich Farming is the special feature of this farm as it is the only farm in India where Ostrich rearing is done.

Chemistry Visit to the polymer exhibition on plastics and polymers IPLEX 2009 by II B.Sc. Chemistry students at Chennai Trade Center, Nandambakkam from 4th to 7th September 2009.

On Aug. 21st 2009, an educational trip was organized for the students of the I B.Sc Chemistry to Diet Aqua, a packaged drinking water plant situated at Ulundai village in the Tiruvallur district. They visited the chemical labs where the packaged water at Diet Aqua is tested for 72 parameters of water quality on a daily basis using various instruments like the digital spectrophotometer, gas stripping apparatus, turbidity meter, conductivity meter and the pH meter.

WINTER TRAINING: The department of Botany conducted a Training programme on ‘Bioinstrumentation’ from Jan. 25-28, 2010 for the I year students of B.Sc. Plant Biology & Plant Biotechnology.

SUMMER TRAINING - Inter departmental conducted at Stella Maris College A batch of 30 students from Botany, Chemistry and Zoology were given intensive Hands on Training on ‘Analytical Instrumentation Techniques’ during summer from April 19-23, 2010. The students learnt the principle, procedure and application of various techniques/instruments like UV-Visible spectrophotometer, Flame photometer, Phtotocolorimeter, Electrophoretic techniques, Laminar air flow for microbial culture techniques, Chromatographic techniques, Advanced Binocular and Trinocular microscope with camera attachment. The training enhanced their practical skill and infused in them a yearning for scientific research.

Field trip to Indian Institute of Packaging, Perungudi for the II Yr. Vocational (Food Science) students on Feb. 7th, 2011. There was a Lecture cum demonstration on Quality Testing of Packaging Materials.

‘Nature Walk’ for the I B.Sc. Zoology students at the Guindy National Park on Sep. 4th, 2010. This National Park is home to the Black buck an endangered species, and also boasts several rare species of flora. Therefore the trip was an eye opener to the students to understand the Principles of Conservation.

Visit to Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) on Feb. 21, 2011 for the I Year Major Elective – Applied Zoology students. They gained knowledge on the various machinery used in the processing of leather. They visited the microbiology lab and the Environmental Engineering Department to know about the treatment of tannery effluents. This visit and the observations made enriched their knowledge on leather technology and waste water management.

Laboratory Visit on Sep. 6th, 2010 for III years to Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai to learn the latest techniques in Genetic Engineering, Genetics, Cell Biology & Medical Lab technology.

The II B.Sc students visited the Genetics, Bioinstrumentation and Biotechnology Laboratories at Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai in order to familiarize themselves with instruments, karyotyping and techniques of clinical importance on Aug. 13, 2011.

The III B.Sc students visited the Veterinary College, Vepery and familiarized themselves with the working of different types of including Electron Microscope and Bioinstruments on Sep. 13, 2011.

The III B.Sc students undertook a one day field trip to a Govt. Sericulture Farm at Yelagiri hills on September 30, 2011

On December 17, 2011 the I Year students went on a Nature Walk at Guindy National Park to understand the Biodiversity.

The II year GE Aquaculture students visited the Zoological Survey of India on January 31, 2012 to observe the various specimens in the museum and in the aquarium.

Turtle Walk – Students of all three years participated in a turtle walk organized in coordination with the Students’ Sea Turtle Conservation Network on February 18, 2012. Mr.Arun, of the Sea Turtle Conservation Network, highlighted the causes for the

dwindling numbers of the Oliver ridley turtles to the students. The turtle walk gave the students an opportunity to be a part of the conservation efforts.

Chemistry Visits to IIT-M – II U.G. and Central Leather Research Institute – I & II U.G. to study the working of different instruments and gain exposure to analytical instrumentation techniques on Sep. 20, 2011.

Industrial visit to M/s. Metalloys Ltd., Ambattur, an Electroplating & gold plating unit – I year students and III year students gained knowledge about the basic principles involved in electroplating process March 7, 2012.

Physics The first year students of the department were taken on a field trip to Walsam Industries and AMPITRON Products, Taramani. The students were exposed to the manufacture of windings in a transformer and different types of transformers. The students were also exposed to the manufacture of switches and power gadgets and were also briefed on the fabrication of wires and switches.

Zoology The I year students visited the Zoological Survey of India on Aug. 8, 2013 as part of their curriculum. They visited the marine aquarium and museum there and learnt about some rare and wonderful aquatic forms. Dr. Bindu and Dr.Sivaleela, both scientists working in the ZSI, spoke to them about their research on Protozoans and Poriferans and made the students aware of species newly discovered by the ZSI and the vast expanse of organisms yet to be discovered. The students also viewed a film on marine biodiversity.

The students of the General Elective “Pet Care” visited the BLUE CROSS on September 21, 2013.

The III year students visited the biotechnology laboratory - MEDICLONE in order to acquaint themselves with current trends and sophisticated instruments used in these laboratories. This trip was made on September 20th, 2013.

The II year students visited the Molecular Biology, Genetics and Biotechnology laboratories and the Central Instrumentation facility at Sri Ramachandra University, Porur on 7th October, 2013. They learnt the procedure for karyotyping, working of bioinstruments and also research facilities avilable at the University.

The I year students participated in a Nature Walk in GUINDY NATIONAL PARK on January 25, 2014. The park zoologist Mr. Kamaraj spoke to the students about the differences between national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, the formation of the Guindy National Park, its management, and about the different plant and animal species that are its inhabitants.

The II year students visited the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Science University (TANUVAS) Vepery, Chennai on January 28, 2014. They were taken to Microbiology lab, Genetics and Animal Breeding Laboratory and the Molecular Biology Lab where they were shown some of the instruments and techniques used. The students were also shown the scanning electron microscope and were given a lecture on the artificial insemination technique used to improve animal breeds and procure healthy animals. They were also taken to a dairy unit where they were able to see equipment

related to pasteurization of milk. The G.E students studying about the “Concepts in Animal Welfare”

were taken for a field visit to the BLUE CROSS on February 17, 2014.

A few students from the Department of Zoology and the Enviro Club participated in a TURTLE WALK organized by the Students Sea Turtle Conservation Network (SSTCN) on February 22nd, 2014. The walk started after an introductory talk on turtle conservation by Mr. Arun of the SSTCN. The students were able to observe a nesting turtle and were able to participate in saving more than 300 eggs. It was an eye opener to many of the students on the need for conservation of biodiversity.

Chemistry I B.Sc students were taken to CLRI and they were exposed to sophisticated analytical instruments techniques (FT-IR, NMR, GC-MS) on Feb 2, 2014

I B.Sc were involved in creating awareness on “adulterants in food samples & pollutants” on 20th Jan 2014 at St. Ebbas Girls School, Chennai.

I B. Sc students also visited Asthagiri Herbal Foundation- to get an exposure on pharmaceutical processes- formulation of drugs & analytical techniques; gas chromatography, UV-Visible spectrophotometer, FT-IR, HPLC, Roto Vapour, Column Chromatography, Thin Layer Chromatography on 17 Feb 2014.

Physics The Students of III B.Sc Physics visited Precision Diagnostics to get an exposure to the working principles of medical instruments such as ECG, MRI, CT-Scan and Ultrasound Imaging on 7th October, 2013.

Wildlife Conservation and Waste Management (Vermicompost) Chemistry Testing of Food Adulteration and Water Analysis

2013-2014 A Science Fair was organised on February 4, 2014, from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. at Open Air Theatre of Stella Maris College by the Undergraduate departments of Botany, Zoology, Physics and Chemistry.

The Fair provided an interesting opportunity to faculty and students to reach out to about 1500 students from nearby Government and Private Schools. The School students were able to view working models, exhibits and demonstrations which enhanced their experiential learning.

School students also gained knowledge on avenues of higher learning, career opportunities in science and institutions providing research facilities.

The school students were also invited to exhibit models on the theme Renewable energy sources and Biotechnology. Seven schools participated in the exhibition showcasing their talents.

Six schools participated in the Science quiz conducted by the Stella Maris science students during the fair and this provided school students an opportunity to have fun filled learning.

Inter Departmental workshops: 2009-10 A batch of 30 students from Botany, Chemistry and Zoology were given Hands on

Training on ‘Analytical Instrumentation Techniques’ during summer from Apr. 19-23, 2010. The students learnt the principle, procedure and application of various techniques / instruments like UV-Visible spectrophotometer, Flame photometer, Photo colorimeter, Electrophoretic techniques, Laminar air flow for microbial culture techniques, Chromatographic techniques, Advanced Binocular and Trinocular microscope with camera attachment. The training enhanced their practical skill and infused in them a yearning for scientific research.

2010-11 One week workshop on Basic Concepts of Bioinformatics was organised for II B.Sc.

Zoology students on the third week of June 2010 in collaboration with the Department of Bioinformatics, Stella Maris College.

2011-12 One week Workshop on Instrumentation Techniques for 30 students from the

departments of Botany, Chemistry, Zoology and Physics from 13.2.2012 to 18.02.2012. Training on Electrophoretic techniques, Chromatography, Flame photometry, Photomicrography, Fluorimetry and Spectrophotometry.

department. It is a mini electro chemical cell with an inbuilt salt bridge. The main feature of it is the use of 1 to 2 ml. of solution, thereby facilitating minimal use of chemicals. The kit can be easily cleaned and reused. It has a high wear and tear. It is cost effective and environment friendly. This kit is used by both UG and PG students in their Electro Chemistry Practicals.
