Park strategy and management 2

Each year create a management plan with overall goals, strategy, objectives, and corresponding actions, labor, time, budget… and action plan

Page 5: Conservation mission at KSNP

Park activities

Create an activities program◦ A clear program: what activities, for what age, when, what price?◦ An adapted communication: book of activities, poster of

activities, internet page and possibility of subscription…◦ Need some volunteer people for which period…

Benchmark other park activities

Increase feedback on activities to continuously improve it

Page 6: Conservation mission at KSNP

Park layout A clear entrance is needed

◦ A unique way to enter the park◦ A big map of the buildings and a big map of the

park◦ Signs guiding to the ticket counter◦ Basic information about the park: fees and

activities

Some renovation is needed: walking zone, barriers…

Some cleaning is needed: signs, pathway, park…

Some esthetical improvement are needed: for the facilities, accommodation, park public areas

A better orientation is needed

?

•Visitors security•No incidentsSecurity

•Attract visitors•Satisfaction of visitors

General appearance of the park

•Preserve the environment of the park•KSNP, a model of conservation

Coherency with environmental

goals

Where am I going?

To see what?

Environmental education:◦ Create an Eco-museum and rearrange the visitor office

Make people want to discover the park Keep it alive A window display of KSNP

◦ Create some educative game for children on the trail and in the points of interest of the park

◦ Re set up the Education Center

Education

Awareness Information on the issue of feeding monkey

◦ A common politic with the state of Kuala Selangor◦ Create more posters to explain at the visitor the risk and the

consequences to feed a monkey. (Story about bad effects of feeding monkeys, Bite dangerousness)

Information on the rule and on the mangrove benefits inside the park◦ Like the protection from storm and tsunami, filter system of

the mangrove, water supply, regulation on climate change and financial resources (fishing and ecotourism).

Ecotourism awareness

Communication 1 One name for the park or always using two

◦ Taman Alam Kuala Selangor◦ Kuala Selangor Nature Park

A silvered leaf monkey mascot and give it a name!

Increase visibility on internet and use internet to get closer to customers and partners ( 2 facebook pages !?)◦ Erase the old facebook page◦ Transfer all relevant information, picture and people liking to the

new facebook page◦ Sharing many "quality links“◦ We need to interact a lot with fans and make them interact with

us◦ short posts and posts that ask question or call to action

Page 10: Conservation mission at KSNP

Communication 2 Create a KSNP website

Improve communication in the park through posters or signs

Control the information we give

• Having an official website and don’t rely on other website to give information about us

• Update our information ourselves• Manage our own visibility on internet• Provide our own information about

conservation matters and other environmental matters

An interaction platform

• With environmental activists: environmental education, take green action with KSNP…

• With tourists: booking activities, reservations, basic information…

• With potential volunteers• With potential donors

Page 11: Conservation mission at KSNP

Conservation Needs on Monitoring Fauna and Flora each year to know the impact of the

eco-tourism, the activities near the park (aquaculture, police marathon...), the state of each population◦ Flora : such as the Ischnostemma selangorica and Wedelia biflora ◦ Fauna: Migratory birds monitoring, Local birds monitoring, Endangered (IUCN) species

monitoring, Bio-indicators (seashell, fireflyes) monitoring◦ Invasive species: to know the impact in the park (on the ecosystem, on the food

competition and on the ecological niche) and the expansion state of these species.

Create a heart zone, without human pressure or any derangement for the wildlife with a delimited access only for the staff and scientific studies.

Partnership and coordination on conservation purpose◦ Create an interacting group where each stakeholder takes action for conservation

purposes

Create a Public Bird Data base◦ Provide bird monitoring information◦ Provide birds pictures and information◦ Provide an interactive plateform

Needs of studies to know the tourism and local activities impacts

Page 12: Conservation mission at KSNP

Finance Develop a real financing strategy

Adapt entrance fees ◦ Compare the entrance fees of some national parks or

similar parks entrance fee

Adapt accommodation fees◦ Compare with other parks

Find some funding opportunities◦ Like Global environment facility, Fondation Nichola

Hulot, Fondation Total, Patagonia

Page 13: Conservation mission at KSNP

Networking Create a local stakeholder group

Enhance wetland and bird partnerships and develop synergies◦ International Crane Foundation◦ Hong-kong wetland park◦ Other Ramsar site

Page 14: Conservation mission at KSNP

Organizational Recommendations Organization Chart

◦ Detailed functions and contacts◦ Make the role of each clear and formal ◦ There is no confusion

Create an informatics common network, ◦ For example dropbox with shared files so that there is no need to recreate educational

material or other common material all the time

Increase communication between the staff and the management, ◦ With regular meetings (once a week) and regular feedbacks and transparency about what

is happening

More transparency is needed about the finances◦ Two people should manage the budgets◦ Getting money for a project should be facilitated with a formal process

Additional staff needed◦ 2 people for conservation (studying and monitoring), ◦ 1 daily security guardian and checking for the entrance◦ 1 person for funding and communication,◦ 1 person in the Educational Center,◦ 1 other gardener
