    The Alberta LibraryThe Alberta Library (TAL) was incorporated in 1997 and is governed by a Board of Directors. t is a not!for!profitlibrary consorti"# that grew o"t of the collective vision of all types of libraries across Alberta. Thro"gh TAL$ thelibrary #e#bership wor%s together on pro&ects to pro#ote and facilitate reso"rce sharing$ contin"ing ed"cationand training initiatives$ and library advocacy. Their goal in wor%ing collaboratively is to increase and i#proveaccess to infor#ation reso"rces for all Albertans.TAL's MembershipTAL's #e#bership is co#prised of over 9 p"blic$ post!secondary$ special$ govern#ent and regional libraries in

    Alberta. TAL also contracts and partners with govern#ent and private organi*ations to provide s"pport to pro&ectsthat pro#ote the strategies set o"t in its b"siness plan.ServicesThe Alberta Library:

    Ad#inisters TAL Online$which is a web!based search engine that can si#"ltaneo"sly search the

    collections of #ost of Alberta's p"blic$ post!secondary and special libraries fro# any nternet connection.

    Ad#inisters theTAL Card$ which is a reciprocal borrowing progra# that allows Albertans to withdraw

    boo%s fro# over +, libraries across the province on a wal%!in basis.

    -egotiates gro"p pricing for electronic databasesfor #e#ber libraries. This helps s#all and big libraries

    ta%e advantage of reso"rces they #ay not otherwise have been able to afford for their co##"nities.

    artners with provincial and federal govern#ent agencies to develop the Alberta Public Library

    Electronic Netor!and province!wide collaborations a#ong college and "niversity libraries.

    /elps to provide services to libraries so they can better service patrons with special needs or disabilities.

The intentionwas the p"rposef"l #anage#ent of growth within the contet of dra#atic societal change. hile still at the#id!point of the post!war boo#$ govern#ents and their agencies were beco#ing ac"tely conscio"s of theirinability to s"pport "niversity costs at the rate of increase which had prevailed over the previo"s few years.2:?'s #andate was to cond"ct a contin"ing st"dy on how to develop and coordinate opport"nities for highered"cation consonant with the reso"rces of the prairie provinces$ and to #a%e reco##endations to the threeprovincial govern#ents....ts #e#bership incl"ded the presidents of each "niversity$ and representatives fro#each province na#ed by the appropriate #inister of ed"cation.
