Of all business sectors, the transport andmaritime industries are traditionally amongthe first to be affected by economicdownturn. On the other hand, the morepragmatic among us realise that our sectorwill also be the first to benefit when theeconomy starts to pick up again.

The most accomplished "sailors" in ourbusiness not only put all their efforts intonavigating their enterprises through theinevitable market calms, but they also laydown plans during more difficult times sothat they are better placed for marketrecovery. For those who combineconfidence with future vision, we hope thatour latest developments as recorded in thisNewsletter will help set the right course.

We highlighted our new Single HoldConotrader 8500 concept in Newsletter2008/2. At that time, we presented theinitial result of work on a design tool forsingle hold vessels optimised to the newIMO SOLAS Damage Stability Regulations. An advanced version of the 8500 single holddesign has now been prepared, and isintroduced in the following pages.Marketing of the design has begun, and weshall shortly be able to offer a completeproject package, including availablebuilding slots at Conoship related, reputable shipyards worldwide.

We are pleased to report that the Conoshipmember yards have relatively strongorderbooks, although delivery openings asearly as 2010 can be offered for sea-rivervessels. Diversification in the product rangefrom Barkmeijer Shipyards and IntervakShipyards & Construction not only providesa stronger market platform, but alsoenables Conoship to promote its specialisedservices across a wider range of ship types. Our latest achievements in this regard couldbe a topic for inclusion in our nextNewsletter.

Let us all hope that the financial sector willget back on an even keel before too long, and that common sense andentrepreneurship will prevail instead of therestoration of old financial models. Aboveall, we would like to see owners rewardedfor enduring and getting through theseexceptionally tough times.

We trust that you will enjoy reading thisNewsletter, and we remain at your disposalshould you require further information orclarification.

Best regards,Guus van der BlesLeo van Ingen

GENERALLast year, Conoship International B.V.developed a typical low-profile coasterof 1800 tons of cargo capacity. This design features an airdraught ofnot more than 8.40 m above ballastdraught arrival, which makes the vessel ultimately capable for service intoseaports and inland ports in Scandinavia, UK and other West-European areas. With a main enginereduced to 749 kW, the vessel can reacha service speed of 10 knots. Themanoeuvrability of this new design willbe enhanced by a 180 kW bowthruster.

shipbuilding yards in the world, thedesign is not frozen yet. We are aware thatowners and/or charterers will have theirown specific preferences and demandswhich have impact on the design.

GENERALIn a previous Newsletter we have highlighted the reason for developmentof this single hold vessel. At that timewe only could show the intermediateresults. We received many reactions andideas from the shipping industry whichresulted in an updated design with evenbetter capabilities. Also ClassificationSocieties came out with ideas fordetailed construction lay out and hullstructural strength particulars. Theresults are shown in this Newsletter.

Beside better stability characteristicsthe increase in width will offer betterstrenght capabilities. The crane capacity is increased to 120/150 tonper crane with the ability to operate intandem mode. Transformation and location of the superstructure enables a free length over deck (on hatch covers) of over 100 m.

GENERALThe m.v. ‘Stroombank’ is one vessel outof a successful series of single deck drycargo vessels, which has beendeveloped for several Wagenborgaffiliated owners. The cargo holdsection consists of one boxshapedcompartment with ballast tanks in thedouble hull and double bottom. Theobstruction free hold can besubdivided into three compartments bytwo adjustable grain bulkheads. Whennot in use the bulkhead sections can bestored in such way that they do notencroach upon the ship’s cargo holdspace. The hull has been optimized in

view of speed, power and deadweightaspects. The main propulsion plantconsists of a 1860 kW diesel engine, sufficient for a service speed of 12.5 knots.

GENERALBarkmeijer Shipyards completed twoidentical multipurpose vessels. The m.v. ’Flinterrebecca’ and m.v.’Flinterrachel’ both have a capacity ofmore than 5600 tdw. As a furthercontinuation of the 4500 tdw series, thesingle hold reaches a length of 72.20 mand has a capacity of 244000 cb.ft. Thevessel is equipped for unrestrictednavigation and is able to transport allkind of cargo, including containers andsome types of dangerous cargo in bulkin accordance to regulation 19 of theSOLAS. During the development of thevessel, special attention has been paid

to reduce the noise and vibrationlevels, which resulted in a very calmand quiet ship.
