United Methodist Women shall be a community

of women whose purpose is to know God and to

experience freedom as whole persons through

Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive

fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission

through participation in the global ministries

of the church.

Christ Walk Kids: A 40-Day Spiritual Journey for Tweens and Teens The author provides a 40 day program for teens and their families. She encourages healthy rela-tionships with their bodies, with one another, and

with God. The program provides a useful resource for discipleship and growth in mind, body and spirit. It encourages kids, parents and

church leaders on a path to healthy choices for all ages. The book is a powerful way to teach about how in God we live, move, and practice healthy living and eating. She answers many questions about living a life of faith today.

Spokane Valley United Methodist Women are women who live in community with other women on the same journey of knowing, loving, and serving God. United Methodist Women is a faith-based membership organization of laywomen within The United Methodist Church. United Methodist Women members are committed to growing as disciples of Jesus Christ in community with other women and advocating on behalf of women, children and youth around the world. United Methodist Women has been in mission for more than 150 years. Spokane Valley United Methodist Women Circles are small groups of women who meet monthly for sharing devotions, mission studies and fellowship. There is no requirement to join a circle to be an active member of the United Methodist Women. From Our Pastor, Mike Graef Sunday, September 8th , 2019 “His Banner Over Me Is Love” 2. “Over My Heart” “You shall not make for yourself an image, or any likeness of anything […]” TODAY: We’ve started a new series called “His Banner Over Me Is Love”, and we’re looking at The Ten Commandments in Exodus Chapter 20. We Americans have lots of stuff. What is the stuff that you can’t live without? What about your heart? What do you have in your heart that you can’t live without? Who is first in your heart? In The Ten Commandments, commandment number 2 asks us, “what is Lord of your heart?” What does your heart cling to? Anything occupying the place of Lord in our lives that isn’t God, is an idol – says the Bible. Idols creep in, they are pernicious – and they fail us every time. But “the ordinances of the Lord are sure, more precious than gold, even much fine gold.” Psalm 19.9-10 Sunday, September 15th , 2019 “His Banner Over Me Is Love” 3. “Over My Mind” “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.” TODAY: Do you like the way you’re thinking through things? How do we evaluate our own thinking? How does a person evaluate what we think about God? What if we could let God correct our views about God. We can let God be Lord of our minds. We’re studying the Ten Commandments on Sunday mornings this Fall. The 3rd Commandment says, “you shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.” Exodus 20.7 (RSV). People narrowly interpret the 3rd commandment all the time. But the “name” of God isn’t just a word, the word God or Yahweh. God’s “name” actually means God’s reputation, God’s character. To “take the name of the Lord your God in vain” is to bend the truth about God’s character. Will you have God as Lord of your mind? Sunday, September 22nd , 2019 “His Banner Over Me Is Love” 4. “Over My Limits” “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. TODAY: Israel’s God is a God who commanded rest for his people. Have you ever been commanded to ‘go home and rest.’ How’d that go? The 4th commandment from God to his people reflects how we’ve been created to live. “For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” God cre-ated us with rest in mind. Are you now, or have you ever been, at a breaking point? Does your soul feel thin and stretched? Are you resting? Even the most fit athlete needs sleep and rest. We reach our limitations very quickly. But we worship and we serve the limitless One, and in him we find rest. Sunday, September 29th, 2019 “His Banner Over Me Is Love” 5. “Over My Family” “Honor your father and your mother.” TODAY: The Ten Commandments are in two parts. There are the first four that teach us about our relationship with God. The second part, the next six, teach us about our relationship with one another – and it begins with family. Very few walk alone in this world, most of us have a family. “Honor your father and mother” carries the meaning of weight, respect, care. “Props” people say today – family members are to give one another “proper dues”. Among God’s ancient Hebrew people, the family was the place where one practiced love of neighbor. Families are very imperfect places. What does it mean for Jesus to be Lord of your family? Well first, he is Savior. He is present in family life. The home is to be filled with “props” (proper dues). “OK Lord, let there be peace on earth – and in my family, and let it begin with me.”

Small Group Bible Studies will soon be starting up for the Fall. A small group coming together in this church is a time to become acquainted with others through sharing a lesson, devotion, fellowship and prayer. It is interesting that three of the present small groups have chosen Adam Hamilton's study, THE CALL, the life and message of THE APOSTLE PAUL. His missionary journeys took the gospel across the Roman world. He mentored many second-generation Christian leaders. Thirteen of the New Testament's twenty-seven books are attributed to him and his story. The study includes a DVD on which Adam takes us to the sites visited by Paul.

For more information on joining a small group, contact Shirley Porter at: 924-2830 or [email protected] New Class Offering Spokane Valley UMC is offering a 7-week class, reading together “Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus” by Ann Spangler and Lois Tverberg. This class is led by Nancy Croskrey and will be on Monday evenings from 5:30pm to 7:00 pm at church, starting Monday, September 16

running through October 28th.

New Grief and Healing Support Group is Coming! A new group will start Wednesday mornings, September 18th through October 23rd. The group will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 am. The sessions will include conversations, prayer, DVD series, coffee and goodies. This support group is for anyone grieving the loss of a loved one, recently or in the past. Even if it has been a while, are there family or personal challenges? In this group, you will find help and comfort. For questions or to sign up, please contact Nancy Ashworth, (509) 993-9074

Do You Have Unused Plastic Bags? United Methodist Women is collecting any type of plas-tic bags, ie: grocery and store bags . These bags are then woven into sleeping mats for the homeless. It takes many bags to make each mat and is a good way to keep them out of the landfills. If you can donate your bags please contact Linda Hansen at 208-620-0158 or [email protected]. She will come and pick them up.

Welcome Betty Cooke! Betty is joining our congregation from First United Methodist Church in Palestine, Texas. She and her husband Richard joined that church in 1978, where she was active in both United Methodist Women and her Sunday school class. Her husband Richard passed in 2010.

Casseroles- Know someone needing a prepared meal? Stop by the church during office hours or on Sunday to pick up frozen casserole or soup.
