The 2015 Leadership Institute Challenge

Just like students are about to go back to school, the Leadership Institute of South Puget Sound is getting ready to begin its 2016 cohort in early October. This year will mark the 17th cohort and over 475 participants.

Have you ever wondered which class really is the “best class ever”? During the introductions at the Auburn Area Business Insider Luncheons you can frequently hear people debate who participated in the best Leadership Institute of South Puget Sound class ever.

So which Leadership Institute class can truly walk the talk and be the Best Class Ever? Welcome to the Leadership Institute BEST CLASS EVER 2015 challenge.

During the Month of September, the Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce is issuing a challenge to all the past Leadership Institute classes to prove that they are the “Best Class Ever” with a competition.

The leadership class who 1) contributes the most to the Auburn Food Bank during the month of September; 2) brings in the most day sponsors for the 2015 -2016 Leadership Institute; and, 3) has the most attendees at the September Business Insiders Luncheon will be

declared the LI Best Class Ever for 2015.

One of the objectives of Leadership Institute is to raise awareness and understanding of the unique issues and challenges facing our region. The Auburn Food Bank recently has had to cut back on their financial aid programs. The financial aid program assists people who are facing a shut off of power, evictions, or need emergency medical care.

Another financial draw on the food bank is their weekly backpack program that provides food during the weekend for 360 students. We want to assist the Auburn Food Bank address some of their needs this month. Cash or donations such as hygiene items, canned food - fruit, vegetables and meat can be dropped off at the Chamber office during the month of September or brought to the September 15 Business Insider luncheon. (For the purposes of this competition one dollar = one pound of food).

is probably more interested in what you have to offer them.

Not Telling Your Audience to Do Something

Call to actions are incredibly important. They dictate next steps of, ideally, how you’d like your visitor to behave. They don’t have to be salesy, and it’s probably best if they aren’t, until visitors get further interested in you and your offerings. They could be as simple as “Read More” or “Learn More” buttons.

If you don’t give your audience next steps, they may decide the little “x” in the upper right hand corner is a best next step. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to get them more engaged with your business and your content.

Making Customers Hunt for Information

What are the most common questions potential customers ask you? Is it your store hours? Maybe it’s your specialty. Whatever the

Chairman’s MessageContinued from page 2

The second challenge in the Best Class Ever competition is to assist the 2016 cohort by becoming a Leadership Institute Day Sponsor. A day sponsorship is $500. The day sponsors help to pay for the cost of lunches each month.

Grab a couple of your LI group to go in on a day sponsorship. Contact Kathy Schneider at [email protected] to secure your classes’ Day Sponsor opportunity.

question, that information should be easy to obtain without clicking through multiple pages. No one has the time or inclination to hunt for what they need. If you don’t serve it up easily, there’s somewhere else they can get it, and you can bet they will.

Loading Slowly

If your site loads slowly you are not only providing potential customers with a bad user experience but Google will penalize you too. Make sure you don’t have anything on your site that’s slowing things down. If your site appears slow on a high-speed business line imagine what home users are experiencing.

Making It All About You

Your website should be a resource for potential customers. It should provide all the necessary information about your business but the focus should be on answering

customer questions and solving their problems. If you provide content that answers questions about your services/products or the industry you work in, or you offer content that entertains, people have a reason to return. Return visits and sharing your content will make Google more interested in your site, which means higher rankings, more organic traffic, and less expensive ad words.

Your website should be a resource for your audience and a sales engine for you. With the right materials placed properly you can create a vehicle that moves visitors along the sales pipeline, while providing them a much needed service with valuable content. The most important thing about your website is your customers. Keep them in mind with all web designs and alterations, and in your content creation, and you’ll have a strong web presence.

Christina R. Green teaches small businesses, chambers and associations how to connect through content. She is a regular blogger at Frankjkenny.com and Event Manager Blog.

Day sponsors will be recognized on the Leadership Institute and Chamber Facebook pages; Auburn Area Chamber newsletter; and, at the LI graduation in June.

Day sponsors are also asked to talk to the LI class about their business and their leadership journey.

Another objective of the Leadership Institute is to build diverse contacts and an excellent communication network. What better way to continue to grow a network than to participate in the Business Insider Luncheon, September 15 at Emerald Downs from 11:30 am to 1 pm.

Looking forward to seeing who truly is the Best Class Ever.

In service,

complete. Everywhere we turn there is something that needs to be done. No matter where we are, whether at home, in bed trying to sleep, making dinner, or with our friends, we think about all the tasks that need our attention.

When Pharaoh had seen enough frogs he summoned Moses to finally put an end to the problem. When Moses asked Pharaoh when he wanted Moses to take action, Pharaoh replied, “Do it tomorrow.” With millions of frogs in the land of Egypt and the opportunity to rid the land of the problem, Pharaoh did what so many of us do when overwhelmed by a growing list of demands, he delegated it to tomorrow. Pharaoh, the King of Egypt, in one act, became Pharaoh, the King of Procrastination.

Overcoming procrastination is never easy but there are some steps that can be taken to help move toward a more aggressive approach to completing tasks, satisfying commitments, and fulfilling responsibilities.

Summarize the Problem (Tasks)

Creating a to-do list is one of the most important components of completing and fulfilling one’s obligations. Too often people attempt to keep a running list of all their tasks, promises, and commitments in their heads only to forget what was promised to whom and by when.

Don’t forget, there’s an app for that. Task management software and apps by the dozen are available to assist in one’s effort to compile and track all your to dos. Ta-da List, Evernote, and Remember the Milk, are just a few of the more popular apps that can be downloaded. If

writing out a list of tasks is simpler, then grab a piece of paper and do so. Use a journal to track your daily list, a wire bound notebook or a Franklin Planner, but whatever you do, write it or log it somewhere.

Prioritize the List

Since thoughts of what to do come at us randomly, it’s good to list the items as they come. Take the time to list all that you need to do and then assign a priority rating to each item. Develop a priority rating schedule that works best for you but you may want to consider 3 priority categories to choose from such as:

1) tasks that must be done promptly or immediately,

2)tasks that should be done soon, and

3) tasks that can be delayed without any problem.

Capitalize on the Opportunity to Do It Now

Once your list is summarized and prioritized it’s time to capitalize on the opportunity to do it now. Get to work on completing the items on your list, check them off as you go and move unfinished tasks to the next day. Keeping a prioritized list will minimize your thoughts to procrastinate and help you get more things done, allowing you to sleep better at night. Remember, when there are frogs in your flour, act now!

The Five Things You Should Know – Business Insider Luncheon 8/18/15 Recap

The gauntlet has been thrown down…who really is the best Leadership Institute of South Puget South “best class ever.” Derek Brandes, Chairman of the Board of the Auburn Area of Commerce

issued a challenge during the month of September to prior Leadership Institute Classes to 1) contribute to the food bank, 2) become day sponsors for the LI 2016 class, and 3) attend the September 15 Business Insiders Luncheon.

The class who does the best in those three areas will hold the title of “BEST CLASS EVER”.

(Please let the Chamber office know if you have forgotten which class you are in - Terry Davis – you are in the class of 2008).

Our featured Speaker was Renee Radcliff Sinclair, President and CEO of TVW. A huge influencing factor in launching TVW came in 1995 during the Mariners push for a new stadium.

The House of Representatives agreed to turn the camera on to record the new stadium debate in special session. TVW is growing from their old motto of “Dare to Be Dull” in several ways. One of its four produced programs, “Well Read” is about to be broadcast to a national audience and TVW is also in the process of creating four new produced programs included one based on supreme court decisions. Currently TVW is developing four new documentaries on school levies, the return of wolves to Washington State, the safe transportation of oil, and water & water storage issues. Renee also shared several of the ways TVW is working to engage younger audiences and improve its technological infrastructure.
