Fall 2007 Connection College of Health Sciences e University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences celebrated 40 years of excellence in allied health education, research, and service with a series of events in April that included a reception hosted by Dean Lori Gonzalez and the Gala, a night of recognition, dinner and dancing. e weekend’s festivities concluded with a brunch and college tour. e 40th Anniversary Gala, sponsored by 36 health care organizations, had 500 people in attendance. Joining the College of Health Sciences
Tim A. Butterfield, PhD, ATC
Assistant Professor, Athletic Training
Dr. Butterfield, a NATABOC certified athletic trainer, has joined the faculty of the Division of Athletic Training in the summer of 2007. He recently completed a post doctoral research position at The Ohio State University. His research focuses on the plasticity of skeletal muscle.
Whitney Jenkins
Staff Associate
Ms. Jenkins, is responsible for providing support to the Radiation Sciences, Clinical Nutrition, and the Clinical Leadership Management programs. She plans to work on a Masters in Public Policy, with a concentration in social policy.
Denise McCarthy
Personnel and Finance AdministratorCHS Business Office
Ms. McCarthy, joined the college in March 2007 as the payroll and finance administrator in the business office. She has an accounting degree from UK and most recently came from the UK Gerontology Graduate Center.
Jennifer McKeon, PhD, ATC
Assistant Professor, Athletic Training
Dr. McKeon, is a NATABOC certified athletic trainer, has joined the faculty of the Division of Athletic Training in the summer of 2007. She recently completed a post doctoral research position at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a focus primarily on the knee and the structural factors that are often associated with increased risk of injury.
Patrick O. McKeon, PhD, ATC
Assistant Professor, Athletic Training
Dr. Patrick McKeon, a NATABOC certified athletic trainer and has joined the faculty of the Division of Athletic Training in the summer of 2007. He recently completed his doctorate of philosophy at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. His research focuses on sensorimotor alterations associated with lower extremity joint injury, specifically ankle instability.

Janice Orienda Burdette Blythe, Clinical Nutrition, ‘74 Berea, KY
Janet currently serves as Associate Provost for Advising and Academic Success in the Office of Academic Services at Berea College. In 1976, she began her teaching career at EKU, receiving tenure and teaching in the Dietetics undergraduate and graduate degree program, served as Department Chair of the Child and Family Studies at Berea College and 12 years, and now holds the rank of full professor where she has received several honors for her excellence in teaching, advising, and is well published.
Steve Gaskins, Physician Assistant Program, ‘87 Louisville, KY
Since graduation Steve has worked as a PA in public health, pediatrics, urgent care and emergency medicine. Steve is a past president of Kentucky Academy of Physician Assistants and was named Kentucky PA of the year 2006. He now serves as chairman of the KAPA Government Affairs Committee and also serves as vice chairman of the Physician Assistant Advisory Committee to the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure.
Gerald A. White, Jr., Radiological Medical Physics, ‘78 Colorado Springs, CO
Gerald is a Clinical Medical Physicist and co-founder of Colorado Associates in Medical Physics, with a practice at Penrose Cancer Center in Colorado Springs, CO and St. Mary Corwin Regional Medical Center in Pueblo, CO. He was honored as a Fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine in 2006, where he is currently President Elect.

The PA program was awarded continued accreditation for three years which is the maximum possible amount that can be received.
New Director
Doris A. Rapp has been named the new director of Physician Assistant Studies at the University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences.
Dr. Rapp, an experienced educator, clinician, researcher, and administrator received a bachelor of science degree in 1970 and a doctor of pharmacy degree in 1974 from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy and a Certificate
in Physician Assistant (PA) Studies in 1974 from the University of Kentucky College of Allied Health. Rapp has several years experience in PA education at the University of Kentucky and most recently at the University of Alabama at Birmingham PA Program. She has served as Program Director at both of these institutions.
Gilson Capiluto, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Division of Communication Disorders,Awarded a National Institute on Aging research grant in the amount of $1,815,812 for a 5-year study on Discourse Processing in Healthy Aging. Debra Nickell, MBA and Samuel Powdrill, MPhil of the Division of Physicians Assistant Studies Awarded a $328,977 grant by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for their 3-year project entitled Physician Assistant Student Training: Targeted Care for at-risk populations in Kentucky.
Chendil Damodaran, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Division of Clinical and Reproductive Laboratory SciencesAwarded a National Institute on Complementary and Alternative Medicine in the amount of $1,088,289 for a 3-year study on identifying natural compounds for the treatment of metastatic prostate cancer.

The College of Health SciencesThe college has risen in national prominence in the area of research and recently set a college record for grant dollars received, moving the College of Health Sciences into the top allied health colleges in research funding.
The College of Health Sciences has the reputation for educating highly qualified front-line practitioners, as well as preparing the academic leaders of tomorrow. This well-earned reputation is a result of recruiting the highest quality students and excellent faculty, as well as continual growth of the programs.

“We are continually engaging with our alumni, faculty and friends to enhance the allied health professions,” said Dr.
Lori Gonzalez. “We believe it is critical to be in partnership with our alumni and friends who can provide the feedback and innovative ways to more positively impact the lives of Kentuckians and to improve
health care for all.”
Outstanding Alumni Honoree“Attending the University of Kentucky-College of Health Sciences 40th Anniversary Gala was a great chance to reconnect with old friends and faculty during all of the weekend festivities,” Tony Brosky (PT ‘87, ‘97), outstanding alumni honoree, said. “It was wonderful to share and experience the accomplishments of the honorees and see the incredible growth of the College of Health Sciences. The new CHS facilities and its faculty are first class! The event rejuvenated the importance of remaining part of the UK CHS community and celebrating our University of Kentucky pride.”

New Research Grants Help Kentuckians
Good News to Share about the Physician Assistant Program
Sheryl has been in the radiology profession for 21 years. In 1986, Sheryl started as a CT technology specialist at the University of Kentucky. Many hats later, she is now the Director of Radiology at the UK Chandler Medical Center. Sheryl received her Associates degree in applied science from Morehead State University and is now a student in the CLM program at the college. In the future, Sheryl would like to continue her professional career as the radiology director and has the opportunity to move into teaching.
The CLM program provides a baccalaureate degree program of study that will enable associate degree trained health care professionals to assume greater leadership and managerial responsibilities in various health care settings.

The University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences celebrated 40 years of excellence in allied health education, research, and service with a series of events in April that included a reception hosted by Dean Lori Gonzalez and the Gala, a night of recognition, dinner and dancing. The weekend’s festivities concluded with a brunch and college tour. The 40th Anniversary Gala, sponsored by 36 health care organizations, had 500 people in attendance. It was the first event of its type in the history of the college and was designed to bring together alumni, donors and friends of the college.

Janice Orienda Burdette Blythe, Clinical Nutrition, ‘74 Berea, KY
Janet currently serves as Associate Provost for Advising and Academic Success in the Office of Academic Services at Berea College. In 1976, she began her teaching career at EKU, receiving tenure and teaching in the Dietetics undergraduate and graduate degree program, served as Department Chair of the Child and Family Studies at Berea College and 12 years, and now holds the rank of full professor where she has received several honors for her excellence in teaching, advising, and is well published.
Steve Gaskins, Physician Assistant Program, ‘87 Louisville, KY
Since graduation Steve has worked as a PA in public health, pediatrics, urgent care and emergency medicine. Steve is a past president of Kentucky Academy of Physician Assistants and was named Kentucky PA of the year 2006. He now serves as chairman of the KAPA Government Affairs Committee and also serves as vice chairman of the Physician Assistant Advisory Committee to the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure.
Gerald A. White, Jr., Radiological Medical Physics, ‘78 Colorado Springs, CO
Gerald is a Clinical Medical Physicist and co-founder of Colorado Associates in Medical Physics, with a practice at Penrose Cancer Center in Colorado Springs, CO and St. Mary Corwin Regional Medical Center in Pueblo, CO. He was honored as a Fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine in 2006, where he is currently President Elect.

Joining the College of Health Sciences
Tim A. Butterfield, PhD, ATC
Assistant Professor, Athletic Training
Dr. Butterfield, a NATABOC certified athletic trainer, has joined the faculty of the Division of Athletic Training in the summer of 2007. He recently completed a post doctoral research position at The Ohio State University. His research focuses on the plasticity of skeletal muscle.
Whitney Jenkins
Staff Associate
Ms. Jenkins, is responsible for providing support to the Radiation Sciences, Clinical Nutrition, and the Clinical Leadership Management programs. She plans to work on a Masters in Public Policy, with a concentration in social policy.
Denise McCarthy
Personnel and Finance AdministratorCHS Business Office
Ms. McCarthy, joined the college in March 2007 as the payroll and finance administrator in the business office. She has an accounting degree from UK and most recently came from the UK Gerontology Graduate Center.
Jennifer McKeon, PhD, ATC
Assistant Professor, Athletic Training
Dr. McKeon, is a NATABOC certified athletic trainer, has joined the faculty of the Division of Athletic Training in the summer of 2007. She recently completed a post doctoral research position at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a focus primarily on the knee and the structural factors that are often associated with increased risk of injury.
Patrick O. McKeon, PhD, ATC
Assistant Professor, Athletic Training
Dr. Patrick McKeon, a NATABOC certified athletic trainer and has joined the faculty of the Division of Athletic Training in the summer of 2007. He recently completed his doctorate of philosophy at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. His research focuses on sensorimotor alterations associated with lower extremity joint injury, specifically ankle instability.
