The Great Food Challenge Digital Event SeriesIntroduction

Climate Action’s digital and live platforms deliver action on net-zero pathways by connecting key, cross-sector stakeholders. This Digital Event Series has been designed in response to the rising impact of climate change on global food systems and the importance in rebuilding a resilient and sustainable food system for the future.

The series is in official partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. With emissions set to account for 50% of total GHG emissions by 2050 a combination of effective policy intervention, increased investment and innovative technologies are critical in meeting this challenge.

The Roadmap to COP26 is a series of virtual events curated to reflect the major challenges and opportunities that will take centre stage in Glasgow 2020. The series is designed to help organisations form both the public and private sectors maintain momentum on climate action towards COP26.

PART 1 l Food Security & Global Recovery

03 September 2020LIVE ONLINE

15:00 – 16:15 pm CESTDuration: 75-Minutes

Event Overview:

Part 1 of Climate Action and the FAO’s digital event series - The Great Food Challenge - delivers 75 minutes of deep dive discussion on how to build resilience into our recovery, improve inclusion and ensure economic growth across our global food systems and regions.

Food insecurity is set to double in 2020. COVID-19 has put developing regions at the greatest risk whilst highlighting structural inequalities in more developed nations. As governments around the world implement recovery plans and fiscal responses to the pandemic, it’s critical that countries work together to strengthen cooperation and pursue an inclusive, resilient recovery.

The policies, intervention and financial support mechanisms imposed by countries must not exacerbate or widen existing global and regional inequalities presented by our food systems and create further food insecurities.

Discussion points:

• What are the major challenges our global food systems face in a post-pandemic world?

• How do we maintain security and fluidity in the global supply chain as countries implement recovery policies and plans?

• How can technology and innovation help us rebuild a more resilient future?

PART 2 l World Food Day

16 October 2020LIVE ONLINE

15:00 – 17:15 pm CESTDuration: 135-Minutes

Event Overview:

What will truly revolutionise our global food systems to feed 10 billion people in 2050?

Whilst this question has been asked for over a decade, the current global food system, supply chains, consumption patterns and agricultural practices have not adapted anywhere near enough to support 10 billion people in a sustainable, low-carbon way.

World Food Day 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of FAO in an exceptional moment as countries around the world deal with the widespread effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic. It is a time to look into the future we need to build together.

To feed 10 billion people by 2050 will require a mixture of political will, innovative technologies, and a fundamental rethink of how we finance a more sustainable and equitable global food and agricultural system. This extended session is designed to celebrate and promote ground-breaking innovations, finance and policy interventions that already exist and must be adopted and scaled today.

Discussion points:

• Food Policy: How do we create a policy/regulatory environment that will allow us to feed 10 billion people?

• Food Finance: What innovative mechanisms are available to increase access to finance to accelerate sustainable agriculture?

• Food Production: What technologies and innovations will increase yields whilst ensuring sustainable agribusiness practices?

• Food Supply: How can we decarbonise global food supply chains?

• Food Demand: How must we shift our global food behaviours towards more sustainable options?

• Food Waste: How do we create more circular food systems by closing the loops?

PART 3 l Agribusiness & the SDGs

03 December 2020LIVE ONLINE

15:00 – 16:15 pm CESTDuration: 75-Minutes

Event Overview:

Agriculture is facing multiple challenges - meeting global food security; a growing population with changing diets; a levelling off of crop yields; dwindling natural resources and biodiversity – all whilst managing the increasing threats of climate change. Meeting all these challenges will require a significant increase in the access and availability of capital for climate-smart investment across agri value chains.

Accessible and robust public and private sector investment is critical to support our global food systems in their transition to a low-carbon, equitable and resilient future.

In the final instalment of the digital agri event series “The Great Food Challenge”, will present this Virtual Discussion to examine how innovative financial mechanisms can be used to achieve the joint objectives of development, mitigation of and adaptation to climate change to align global agribusiness with the UN SDGs.

Discussion points:

• How does finance and investment support agriculture and the SDGs?

• How do we change the risk profile of the agriculture industry to access the required capital to drive a sustainable agribusiness future?

• How can developing countries maintain sustainable agriculture practices in spite of global foreign aid withdrawals?

• How do agribusinesses assess their performance against sustainability and/or the SDGs when there are no clear metrics, when there is poor data, or the data is repetitive?
