Life has learned tocatch electrons in

the excited state anduse the excessenergy for lifeprocesses

Energy is trapped directly at the electronic

level It is stored not only as vibrational and

electronic bond energies, but also in thestructure of the system

    It would bewrong to

    think of theelectron as aminutecharged

    particleorbiting thenucleus

It is more like a complex probability cloud

distributed over the whole three-dimensionalorbital, as consistent with the wave-particleduality of all matter (as well as light).

a protein or DNAsequence has more

than one function But it sings one notefor each function towhich its binding

partner, which couldbe another protein, ora small molecule, resonates.

    Fractal Heart Rhythm

the researchers havediscovered that positiveemotions, such as love andappreciation, as opposed to

negative emotions such asanger and frustration, giverise to a particular heartrhythm that is more'coherent', and appears tobe associated with ageneral sense of well-

    being.

    Coherent Heart Rhythm of PositiveEmotions

    Sustained positiveemotions generate a

smooth, sine-wave-likepattern in the heart'srhythm, which ischaracteristic of the state of'psychophysiologicalcoherence'.

    Light and Living Matter

photons are held in a coherent form in theorganism, and when stimulated, are emittedcoherently, like a very weak multimode laserranging over all frequencies

it appears that the muscle actually receives

the signals for enhanced coordinated actionlong before the motor signals arrive

As the embryodevelops, however, conditions favourablefor stimulatedcoherent emission ofthe trapped photons

may become realised. In connection with the trapping or storage of

photons, it has been observed that death in

organisms invariably begins with a sharpincrease in the intensity of light emission, whichcan persist undiminished for more than 48hours.

The most remarkable implication of ourfindings is that organisms are completely

    liquid crystalline.

    There is somethingspecial about living

    matter in anorganism that isalive.

The same molecules, from big to small, especially the water, made up of atoms ofdifferent kinds, the electrons around the atoms, all, are transformed by being in an organismthat is alive. They are not longer the sameelectrons, atoms, or molecules.

hence the term mesophase. Unlikeliquids, which have little or no

molecular order, liquid crystals havean orientation order. But unlike solidcrystals, liquid crystals are flexible, malleable, and responsive.

Liquid crystals are 'tunable responsivesystems', and as such, ideal formaking organisms.

liquid crystalline is the state orphase of matter in between

    the solid and the liquid,

    QuantumExperience &

    ConsciousExperience

The unity of experience depends, in the first

instance, on the organism's experience ofitselfas a unity, and not as a collection of disparateparts. It is the 'I' that each and every one of us

    experiences ourselves to be.

Many people haveremarked on theholographic nature of

brain memory in thatit is able to survivelarge brain lesions. All the more so if

    memory

is delocalised, not just over the entire brain, butalso over the entire liquid crystalline continuumof the body.

This is fully consistent with the 'romantic' idea, increasingly validated by the foundations of

quantum theory, that all nature is

If the watermolecules arealigned with +-alternating in achain, then a'jump' conduction

of positiveelectricity couldtake place. This isfaster than

    nanotubes

ordinary electricity passing through a wireand much, much faster than charged ionsdiffusing through water.

Cho had set a new trend in acupunctureinvestigations. Many fMRI and PET scanstudies were to follow, which demonstrated thatacupuncture treatments could indeed stimulateor inhibit specific parts of the brain, though thestory is more complicated, as there are different

    schools of acupuncture.

A quantum world is a radically interconnected, interdependent world where every entity, fromelementary particle to galaxy, evolves like anorganism, entangled with all there is in nature.

Quantum Coherence: Implies correlation, connectedness, also consistency in the system. So we refer to people's speech or thought ascoherent. Thus, coherence always refers to

wholeness, and quantum coherence only moreso. A coherent state thus maximises bothglobal cohesion and local freedom.

The biochemical picture we now have of theliving system: compartment, micro-

compartments and micro-domains, right downto molecular machines, protons and electrons, each functioning autonomously, doing verydifferent things at their own rates, yet all

    couples together.

The predominant interactions in the liquidcrystalline organism, as in any liquid crystallinesystems, are electromagnetic and electro-

mechanical and necessarily so, for those are theonlyways in which molecules interact and form thevarious hierarchies of supramolecular assembliesthat make up living organisms themselves.

Living organismsdepend on quantumreactions, not only in

the sense thatquantum tunneling isexplicitly recognisedin electron and

    proton transfer, but

especially in the sense that all energytransductions are carried out by individualenzymes and other molecules acting as'quantum energy machines' in which individualquanta of energy released are directly

transferred from point of release to the point of

The coordination of such activities requires

nothing short of quantum coherence, especiallyin view of the rapidity and specificity with whichresponses or intercommunication can takeplace in the living system.

  • 7/28/2019 Connecting Dots Final

    26/40

Consciousness - the facilities of sentience,

responsiveness and memory - may beunderstood as a macroscopic quantum wavefunction inhering in the liquid crystallinecontinuum of the organism. Organisms arequantum superpositions of coherent activities. This has profound implications on the nature ofknowledge and knowledge acquisition, as well

as issues of determinism and free will.

Perhaps such a stateof enlightenment isjust what Plato

envisaged as beingone with the DivineMind; or, as the

Taoists of ancientChina would say, being one with theTao, the creative

principle that isresponsible for all themultiplicity of things.

  • 7/28/2019 Connecting Dots Final

At the end of his book, What is Life?,Schrodinger has this to say on determinism andfree will, "...let us see if we cannot draw thecorrect, non-contradictory conclusion from the

following two premises:(i) My body functions as a pure mechanismaccording to the Laws of Nature.(ii)Yet I know, by incontrovertible direct

experience, that I am directing its motions, ofwhich I foresee the effect, that may be fatefuland all-important, in which case I feel and takefull responsibility for them.

the person, if any, who controls the "motion ofthe atoms" according to the Laws of Nature...'

    '... consciousness isnever experienced

in the plural, only inthe singular...'That description isjust what the state

of coherenceentails: a multiplicitythat is singular, the'self' is

a domain of coherence, a pure state thatpermeates the whole of our consciousness.

    But as the self is

  • 7/28/2019 Connecting Dots Final

    31/40

But as the self isalso distributed, tobe true to 'self' does

notimply actingagainst others. Onthe contrary, sustaining others

    sustains the self; sobeing true

to others is also being true to self. It is only within

a mechanistic Darwinian perspective thatfreedom becomes perverted into acts againstothers.

"...to be free, 'must mean to be conscious."

    John Stuart Mill

  • 7/28/2019 Connecting Dots Final

    32/40

One might represent consciousness as a wavefunction that evolves, constantly beingtransformed by experience and creating

experience in overt acts.In a sense, the quantum coherent organism ismost spontaneous and free, which is the Taoistideal in poetry and art, and indeed in life itself.

all the tones of our personality and experience.

Each significant experience becomesentangled in our being, constituting a new wavefunction, in much the same way that particles ofindependent origins become entangled after

they have interacted. This would also be in linewith David Bohm and Basil Hiley's ontologicalinterpretation of quantum theory, which does

not recognise the collapse of the wave function.

The 'wave function' that isconsciousness nevercollapses, but is alwayschanging, and alwaysunique, as it is 'coloured' by

The reason weexperience ourmacroscopic world sodifferently from themicroscopic world maybe tied up with the

space-time structure of reality. It could be that, were we the dimensions of elementary particles,we too would experience our world as being

inhabited by self-possessed, coherent beingswith a free will, and we would be most surprisedto find that human-sized observers are trying topredict which state we are going to 'collapse'

    into next.

  • 7/28/2019 Connecting Dots Final

    35/40

In the same way, an external observer ofgalactic dimensions would find our humanbehaviour completely 'quantum andunpredictable.

Nature is ever-present to us, as we are to

ourselves. This ever-present is structured, as wehave seen. Our experience consists of thecatenation of events of different durations thatpropagates and reverberates in and around our

being, constantly being registered andrecreated. What constitutes memory of someevent is the continuing present for the over-arching process of which the event is part.

  • 7/28/2019 Connecting Dots Final

    37/40

The universe of coherent space-time structures

is thus a nested hierarchy of individualities andcommunities that come into being through actsof prehensive unification. It is a trulyparticipatory, creative universe. Just as theorganism is ever-present to itself during itsentire life history, and all other individualitiesare ever-present to it, the universe is ever-

    present to itself.

  • 7/28/2019 Connecting Dots Final

    38/40

The universe is ever-present to itself in theuniversal duration where creation never ceases

by the convocation of individual acts, nowsurfacing from the energy substrate, nowcondensing to new patterns, now submergingto re-emerge in another guise. (remember Faust?)

  • 7/28/2019 Connecting Dots Final

    39/40

Reality is thus a shimmering presence ofinfinite planes, a luminous labyrinth of theactive now connecting 'past' and 'future', 'real'with 'ideal', where potential unfolds into actualand actual enfolds to further potential throughthe free action and intention of the organism. It

is a sea awash with significations, dreams anddesires. This reality we carry with us, an ever-presentstraining towards the future. The act is the

cause; it is none other than the creation ofmeaning, the realisation of the ideal and theconsummation of desire.
