The African Community Centers for Unity andSelf-Determination, Inc.

Founded in 2003, the African Community Centers (ACC) continues to unfold as a system and platform through which progressive institutions in the Black Community connect and collaborate. We gave the desired results of this system and platform the name "Functional Unity."

The founders, Njeri Alghanee, Tamu Kanyama, Hekima Kanyama, Akbar Imhotep and Leonard Mzee Tate, recognized the need for greater collaboration and sharing of information between organizations and institutions in our community. To address this need, the ACC was formed as a service and facilitator. Special care was taken not to form yet another organization to address the many challenges we face, but to put in place a process to help our existing organizations and institutions communicate with each other and join forces when needed.

The Board (Unity Board) of the ACC was later strengthened by the addition of three new members, Yoofiwaa Kyekye, Kwabena Lumumba and myself Wanique Shabazz.

The challenge today is essentially as it was at our founding; perfecting the system and process. Our grand plan called for the establishment of local African Community Centers throughout the U.S. The Atlanta Center stands alone thus far and is a work in progress. What we learn from the Atlanta Center will be duplicated in other cities and communities. We manage two websites: www.unity4power.org and www. 10-10-50.org.

Recent accomplishments, include the incubation of a new institution: The Us Lifting Us Economic Development Cooperative, LLC. This is a very exciting business model that gives us a realistic opportunity to gain economic control of our communities in the U.S. and beyond. See www.usliftingus.com for more information. On-going are improvements to the Functional Unity process through an internal Process Improvement Committee and the Core Administration.
