Following their program-best 22 wins in conference play last season, the Huskies earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the 17th time. The Huskies’ 2012 season ended in at 31-27-1 as Penders has now led his squad to 30 or more wins in seven of his nine years. In eight seasons as head coach for the Huskies, he has had a total of 30 players either drafted or signed by professional baseball clubs. The 2010 season was one of the most successful seasons in program history, as Penders guided the Huskies to a program-best 48 wins. UConn earned a NCAA Tournament berth for the first time since 1994 and hosted the Norwich Regional at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Conn.In July of 2003, Penders became just the fifth head coach in the program’s history since 1924 joining Sumner Dole (1924-35), J.O. Christian (1936-61), Larry Panciera (1962-79) and Andy Baylock (1980-2003). Penders was an assistant coach for the Huskies for seven years from 1997-2003 as UConn posted winning seasons in each of those campaigns. As an assistant coach, Penders coordinated the Huskies recruiting of student-athletes, served as a hitting coach and worked with the catchers and outfielders.A standout on the baseball field for Connecticut during his undergraduate career, Penders was a four-year letterwinner as a Husky. He was co-captain of the 1994 UConn squad that won the BIG EAST Conference tournament, and the Huskies advanced to the NCAA Championship in both his junior and senior years.Penders graduated from UConn in 1994 with a degree in political science and added a master’s degree from UConn in 1998 from the School of Education.A native of Vernon, Conn., Penders and his wife, Brooke, reside in Old Wethersfield, Conn., and have three children – a daughter, Tess Avery (10), and sons, James Henry “Hank” (8), and Charles Edward “Charlie” (4).

Starting Cross... Cross’ first 16 appearances in 2012 were out of the bullpen, but each of his last eight have been starts. When starting games, he is 6-0 with a 1.22 ERA and 57 K’s in 66.1 innings. The Huskies are 8-1 in his starts. Nationally, Cross owns the second lowest career ERA among active players with at least 75 innings pitched at 1.26.

Bullpen Bagels... The Husky bullpen has tossed 65 scoreless innings of the 84 whole innings pitched. As a unit, the bullpen owns a 3.46 ERA, compared to a 4.58 ERA by opposing relievers. UConn relievers had a string of 20 consecutive scoreless in-nings snapped at Seton Hall (Mar. 28-game 1). Senior RHPs Ryan Moore and Pat Butler own ERAs of 0.84 and 2.12 in 10.2 and 17.0 innings pitched, respectively. In ex-tra-inning games, the bullpen has thrown 17.1 innings, given up 12 hits, struck out 11 and allowed one run.

Trouble at the Top... In the last six games, UConn’s top of the order (Verdi, Ferriter, Mazzilli) have combined to hit just .167 (11-for-66). The trio, the only upperclassmen starters, has combined for just six RBI and zero extra-base hits over that stretch.

On the Bases... Connecticut has re-mained dedicated to its aggressive game plan as the Huskies have at-tempted 83 stolen bases to the op-ponents 48. UConn has totaled 65 steals, a .783 success rate, while the Huskies have thrown out just five op-posing runners on the bases. Ferriter and Verdi lead UConn with 17 and 14, respectively. The Huskies en-tered the week with 58 steals, good enough for 15th in the country and 11th in steals per game, 2.42.

Age is Just a Number... Through re-search conducted by the UCF sports information staff, Ferriter is the fifth oldest baseball player in NCAA Divi-sion I. He turned 24 on February 24. Columbia’s Joey Falcone is the old-est player in the nation at 26 (June 1, 1986). Ferriter’s 206 games ranks third all-time at UConn and is sixth most among active NCAA players.

UConn’s Man of Steal... Ferriter tied the program mark for career steals with the 80th of his career at Central Connecticut (Mar. 13). He took the all-time lead with his 81st coming at Presbyterian (Mar. 16) and added one more to his total in the same game. Ferriter’s career total now stands at 90. He tied his career-high with three steals at Hartford (Mar. 26).

Triples Crown... In the ninth inning at Central Connecticut (Mar. 13), Mazzilli tripled for the 12th time in his career to pass Brian Majeski for first all-time at UConn. He is tied for the league lead with four as his record is now 13.

Lineups... Through 27 games, the Huskies have used 11 different line-ups, adding three new ones in the last week. Connecticut’s two most common lineups feature a catching platoon with sophomore Connor David and fresh-man Max McDowell. UConn used 32 different lineups in 2012. Through 21 games in the last two seasons, the Huskies used 16 lineups in 2012 and 11 in 2011.

TWI(UConn)B History... Last season, the Huskies swept Pittsburgh in the road on April 5-7. Six hitters recorded multi-hit games in the opener and Jor-dan Tabakman went seven innings to earn the win game two. UConn came from behind in the finale with a three-run rally in the ninth to claim a 5-3 win. David singled to tie the game and Fer-riter followed with a two-run single to push across the go-ahead runs.

23 Ways to Reach First... Through 27 games, UConn has shown great patience at the plate and finding ways to get on. Six regulars in the Husky lineup maintain on-base percentages above .375, including sophomore Jon Testani, who is batting just .203. As a team, the Huskies own a .491 OBP, ranking 32nd in Division I, to .322 for their opponents.

Homegrown Huskies... The Con-necticut 34-man roster features 19 players from the “Nutmeg State”. All UConn players from the state of Con-necticut will be identifiable by a decal on the back of their hats and helmets in the outline of the state. Seven of 10 starters on opening day are from Connecticut, including starting pitcher Anthony Marzi.

An Eye on the Books... Mazzilli and Ferriter sit in the top-20 of 10 major offensive categories in the UConn re-cord book. Mazzilli took over second in career doubles with 56. Mazzilli (240) is currently third all-time in hits, while Ferriter (239) is fourth.

March to Victory... Connecticut post-ed a record of 12-6 in the month of March, besting last season’s mark of 11-8. The 12 wins are the most for the Huskies in the month since registering a 13-7 record in 2008.

Mazzilli Receives Preseason Ac-colades... Mazzilli was named the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year by the league’s coaches. One of the top hitters in the league in 2012, Mazzilli was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection last season. He was also named a Louisville Slugger Pre-season First Team All-America pick by Collegiate Baseball News. For the second straight season, Mazzilli was tabbed as an All-America First Team selection by Perfect Game USA. He was also named to the Baseball America Preseason All-America Third Team.

Seven in a Row... The Huskies’ seven-game win streak ended with a 6-4 walk-off loss to SHSU on March 9. UConn shutout the Bearkats in the first game of the day, 8-0, behind 7.1-scoreless innings from Cross. The win matched Connecticut’s longest win-ning streak from 2012. Testani went 3-for-4 four and drove in four runs in the win.

Nine Isn’t Enough... UConn defeat-ed Texas Tech, 1-0, in 11 innings on Sunday afternoon. It was the second extra-inning win of the season and sixth in a row. In the top of the 11th, redshirt-senior center fielder Billy Fer-riter lifted a fly ball to left and scored sophomore right fielder Jon Testani from third on a sacrifice-fly for the go-ahead run. Redshirt-sophomore right-hander Jordan Tabakman came on in relief and nailed down his first ca-reer save.

Let’s Play 15!... Freshman Bryan Daniello made his collegiate debut as a pinch-runner against Indiana (Feb. 16) and soon advanced to third on one wild pitch and then scored the go-ahead run on another. Senior righty Dan Feehan, who came on in the 14th with two on and one out, fin-ished the game to earn the win, 4-3, in 15 innings. It was the longest game for Connecticut since a 2-2, 16-inning tie against Holy Cross on March 22, 2011. Junior shortstop Tom Verdi stole a career-high three bases and scored a pair of runs.

In the Hardware City... Last month, UConn announced that it will play a home game at New Britain Stadium on April 19 against USF at 6:30 pm. Last season, the Huskies hosted Notre Dame in New Britain on May 18. Con-necticut will also play at Dodd Stadium on May 14 as the away team against Rhode Island at 11:30 am.

Connecticut Baseball 2013 Game NotesContact: Brendan Flynn Phone: 860-486-1496 Fax: 860-486-5085 E-mail: [email protected]. In the Penders era, Connecticut is 2-8 in season openers, with the only other win a 10-7 road win at Belmont on February 25, 2005. Since the Huskies joined the BIG EAST, they are 9-20 in season openers.

Preseason Poll... In the coaches’ poll, the Huskies (74 points received) were pegged fourth after a fifth place finish in the BIG EAST standings in 2012. Louisville (98) received eight of 11 first place votes and to be tabbed as the preseason favorite. St. John’s (82) took the three remaining first place votes and was followed by Notre Dame (81) to round out the top-three.

BIG EAST Draft Picks... Since Penders took over as head coach in 2004, UConn has had 30 players selected in the MLB Draft; the fourth most amongst BIG EAST teams. In that time frame, Notre Dame leads the league with 35. Springer became the highest drafted player out of the league with the 11th overall pick in 2011. Mike Olt was one of 17 players from BIG EAST teams to play in the MLB in 2012.

300-Win Milestone... Jim Penders picked up his 300th career win in an 11-6 decision over Hartford (3/27) at J.O. Christian Field. He passed Larry Panciera (297) for second most wins all-time following a three-game sweep at WVU. Penders’ all-time record is 326-214-4, all at Connecticut. He won his first game on March 8, 2004 against Butler. Current assistant coach Josh MacDonald was the winning pitcher. Penders trails his predecessor Andy Baylock (556) for most wins in the UConn dugout.

Around the Hot Corner... This season freshman Vinny Siena has started all 27 games at third and played every inning. Four different players started games at third base last season. Tim Martin spent the first seven games there, before yielding to Mike Friel, who started 11. Jon Testani started the most games with 22, while Ryan Fuller returned to the position he held full-time in 2011 to start the final 19 games of 2012.

Mr. February... Despite a loss and a no-decision in his first two starts, junior lefty Brian Ward has proven to be extremely ef-fective in the month of February. He owned a 2.08 ERA with nine strikeouts in 13 in-nings last month. In four career starts dur-ing February, Ward is 2-1 with a 1.64 ERA and 17 K’s in 27.1 innings of work.

BIG EAST Tournament... The 2013 BIG EAST Baseball Tournament will return to Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla., for a sixth straight season, May 22-26.

Two-Time Captain... At the end of fall ball, fifth-year senior Billy Ferriter was selected as UConn’s captain for the second straight season.Penders on Ferriter: “Billy has quietly and doggedly emerged as a leader over his four-plus years in our program. His team-mates not only respect his work ethic, but they also know how far he has come as a student and athlete during his time here.”

On the Hill... The UConn pitching staff returns 368.2 (71%) innings pitched from last season, but just a collective 18-20 re-cord. Anthony Marzi pitched 98.2 innings in 2012, accounting for 26.7% of the outs coming back for 2013. Heading into last season, the Huskies were trying to rebound from major hits to their arms as they lost 308 innings and 27 wins from 2011.

MLB Draft... LJ Mazzilli, Scott Oberg and David Fischer were chosen in the 2012 MLB Draft. Mazzilli went in the ninth round to the Minnesota Twins, while Oberg was also taken on day two of the draft by the Colorado Rockies in the 15th. He played for the Grand Junction Rockies in rookie ball, while Fischer, an 18th round pick of the Washington Nationals, played short-sea-son Single-A with the Auburn Doubledays.

All-UConn Coaching Staff... The cur-rent Husky coaching staff, comprised of all UConn alums, will man the dugout together for the second straight season. Penders (‘94) captained the Huskies to a NCAA Tournament appearance and BIG EAST Tournament Championship in 1994, while assistant coach and teammate Chris Po-deszwa (‘93) played on two NCAA Tour-nament teams in 1990 and 1993. Josh MacDonald (‘06) pitched for UConn for four seasons and was the winning pitcher in Penders’ first win as head coach in 2004. Jeff Hourigan (‘05) transferred to Storrs from Clemson and pitched and played first base in his two seasons with the Huskies.
