The building and grounds were originally designed in 1981 by the firm of William L. Pereira & Associates, known for the iconic Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco; the original Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA); and the campus plans for various universities in the southland, including Pepperdine University and the University of Cali-fornia, Irvine; as well as many other regional landmarks. For over three decades Avery Dennison’s world headquarters called this tree-filled, park-like campus home.

Architectural planning and design was provided by SWA Architects and the interior design is being led by Kardent Design. CMPG’s project management team is coordinating all the steps and needs of the project, while Abbott Con-struction is overseeing all building phases and contractor teams. When completed, the new building will meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards featuring a range of energy efficiency programs, including an array of solar panels shading the parking area.

In a year of profound change across the world as well as in our daily lives, I am pleased to report vision research advances at a steady pace at Doheny Eye Institute. In spite of the guidelines and protocols in place to protect the health of our researchers and administrative staff during the past year, we have continued to make strides in our efforts to improve lives by saving sight.

Because the Doheny Board of Directors understands the importance of steady and persistent leadership to build upon Doheny’s excellent reputation, it is my great pleasure to announce Marissa Goldberg as Doheny Eye Institute’s Chief Executive Officer. The Board of Directors unanimously decided that in recognition of Ms. Goldberg’s years of dedicated and exceptional leadership, as well as her strengths in fiscal and institute management, she is the best person for this charge. With Ms. Goldberg’s experienced direction, the Institute is well-positioned for accelerated growth of new and exciting initiatives and continued excellence in its vision research pro-grams, objectives set forth by the Board of Directors.

Dr. Srinivas Sadda is now fully re-engaged and focused on patient care and his primary research goal to leverage ar-tificial intelligence to improve eye health. Further, Dr. Sadda has taken the role as Doheny’s Director of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

With this new focus by Dr. Sadda, the Board of Directors in now fully committed to bring on board a Chief Scientific Officer. In concert with Ms. Goldberg, the new CSO will be focused on prioritizing, enhancing, and implementing a plan of action to achieve growth strategies and deliver unprecedented advance-ments in vision research. The search process will be lengthy as finding the ideal candidate is no small task. We are confident that the person selected will be committed to excellence and forge the goals of the Board of Directors to position Doheny as the preeminent leader in ophthalmology with innovative, groundbreaking and transformative scientific programs.

Connecting the DotsInterdisciplinary Science Guides Vascular Research

In October of 2020, Kaustabh Ghosh, PhD, completed his first year as a re-search scientist at Doheny Eye Institute and as Associate Professor of Ophthalmol-ogy on the faculty at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine. As an interdisciplinary researcher, Dr. Ghosh has expertise in the fields of vascular inflammation, mechano-biology, bioengineering and nanomedicine which enable better understanding and treatment of diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration, the leading causes of vision loss in the global diabetic and aging population. “Doheny provides the perfect balance between basic science and clinical research,” offers Dr. Ghosh enthusiastically, “Doheny is the ideal place to realize the true potential of my work as it also offers tremendous strength and resources in ophthalmic imaging.”

Dr. Ghosh is investigating whether and how the “stiffening” of blood vessels in the eye contributes to their progressive degeneration in diabetes and aging, a hallmark of diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. By studying these debilitating eye diseases from an entirely new perspective of vascular stiffen-ing, Dr. Ghosh aims to identify new classes of drugs that normalize vascular stiffness in the eye and prevent vision loss. This approach makes his work an ongoing critical resource to the clinical teams seeking and developing treatments for patients.

Although treatments for both diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration have improved in recent decades, most strategies only target the “late stage” and may not be effective in many patients. Early-stage detection and treatment is, therefore, necessary, especially since the vascular damage caused by diabetic retinopathy may begin as early as 10-20 years before the symptoms can be detected. Age-related macular degeneration follows a similar course.

With diabetes and aging as major risk factors for vision diseases, Dr. Ghosh’s research is crucial. The overarching goal of this interdisciplinary approach is to connect the dots between the findings from age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy studies so that common vascular normalization thera-pies can be developed for both of these vision-threatening conditions. Through collaborations with clinicians and scientists at Doheny and UCLA Ophthalmology, he envisions reaching this goal sooner.

Glaucoma is the oldest known vision disease. This group of eye con-ditions that damage the optic nerve are described by Doheny’s Dr. Brian Francis as “chronic, progressive and incurable.” While this condition is in-tractable, Doheny’s glaucoma doctors are constantly exploring the disease along with new treatments. Success comes through exacting research paired with advanced clinical practice.

Glaucoma is insidious. Dr. Vic-toria Tseng points out, “Many forms have no warning signs, and changes in vision may only be noticed at an advanced stage.” It can occur at any age and is one of the leading causes of blindness for people over the age of 60. The damage caused by glaucoma is irreversible, so regular eye exam-inations are key to early detection and successful treatment. One of the common symptoms is increased pres-sure of the intraocular fluid. This can be successfully treated by managing the flow of fluid through the eye, either pharmaceutically or surgically.

Five doctors lead Doheny’s glau-coma response: Vikas Chopra, MD, Brian Francis, MD, MS, Alex Huang, MD, PhD, Christine Nguyen, MD, and Victoria Tseng, MD, PhD. Four of these doctors spend 25% of their time in research and 75% in the clinic. Dr. Huang, on the other hand, reverses this equation, focusing 75% of his ef-forts in research. His recent R01 grant award from the National Institutes of Health to support his research reflects the success of his emphasis, as only 10% of such applications are funded each year.

The treatment for acute angle-clo-sure glaucoma is emergency surgery. This condition is marked by increas-ingly intense pain and redness in the eye, along with blurred vision, headaches and nausea. For the more typical, slowly progressing open-angle glaucoma, initial treatments may come in the form of eye drops, office-based laser procedures or medication inserts. If the disease progresses and surgery is required, Doheny’s team

utilizes the newer minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries, surgical laser, as well as filtration surgeries.

Collegiality is key to the success of Doheny’s glaucoma team. Dr. Francis attributes this to the legend-ary leadership of the late Dr. Stephen Ryan, Doheny’s longtime President, and Dr. Ronald Smith, the longtime chairman of the ophthalmology department. Dr. Ryan recommended that research teams be involved in each other’s work and encouraged the efforts of emerging, younger doctors. Dr. Smith always promoted cooperation within and between specialty services. Dr. Francis paraphrases the team’s philosophy as, “five minds are better than one.” The team holds monthly service meetings and also collaborates on its clinical cases. Dr. Nguyen explains “This is an exciting place to be. From early diagnosis techniques to mini-mally invasive surgical and laser treatments, the glaucoma research at Doheny is cutting-edge.”

What is Basic Science?

Basic science research is curiosity-driven investigation. It asks, “What is happening? and follows up with “Why is this happening?” It seeks causes and eects, along with the systems in which they exist. Dr. Ghosh observes, “a basic research scientist is ultimately a philosopher who continually utilizes the Socratic method of inquiry, which applies reason, keeps things simple, connects the dots, and knows and remembers the context.”

Basic science research has a partner, applied or clinical science. e researcher asks, “Why is this observation important?” while the clinician asks, “How can I use this knowledge?” One of Doheny’s great strengths is its excellence in both scientic emphases.

Dr. Sun Seeks Disease TriggersImmunology Points Toward Future Breakthroughs

Immunology research can be understood as seeking biological “light switches”, which will turn off diseases or turn on the body’s proper response in an effort to prevent or combat disease. Understanding these immunological switches, known as triggers, is the focus of Deming Sun, MD, who holds the Mary D. Allen Endowed Chair in Vision Research. He is a principal investigator at Doheny Eye Institute and a Professor of Ophthalmology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

Dr. Sun is an internationally recognized expert on how a subset of immune cells called T cells are triggered to cause injury. Highlights of his education and academic experience span the globe, beginning at Shanghai Medical University, China, and continuing at Max-Planck Institute and Albert-Ludwig University in Germany. He returned to China as vice chairman of the Department of Immunolo-gy at the Cancer Institute, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, before coming to the United States. Dr. Sun started his independent research career at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, and was program director of the Core Grant in the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Louisville, Kentucky, before joining Doheny in 2008. His work has been widely published; he has received numerous honors and recognitions in China, Europe and the US; and he has been the recipient of National Institute of Health grants for more than two decades. Currently, his research is funded by a new R01 grant from the National Eye Institute.

There are three primary focuses to Dr. Sun’s work characterizing the unique properties of both pathogenic and regulatory T cells, which are the major immune cells controlling various immune responses: First, identifying regulatory T cells, which overrule the behavior of disease-causing pathogenic T cells. This includes determination of the circumstances, either pathogenic or environmental, that give rise to pathogenic T cells in the first place. Second, understanding how to avoid damaging or overreactive autoimmune activity by investigating how to maintain a balance between pathogenic T cells and regulatory T cells. And finally, under-standing the role of inflammatory molecules in maintaining healthy immune re-sponses. His goal is to identify effective ways to treat abnormal immune respons-es in the development of disease.

Dr. Sun summarizes his research this way: “Once we know the triggers, we hope to be able to turn off abnormal activity or boost beneficial processes.”

Immunology: Changing Modern Medicine

Immunology is the study of the immune system, which is the body’s rst line of defense against infections and diseases. If the immune system is not functioning properly, a range of diseases, including allergies and cancers, will occur. Autoimmunity, on the other hand, is the immune system mistakenly attacking its own body.

e eld of immunology was pioneered by Edward Jenner in the 18th century. He and his successors rst worked to develop vaccines to prevent various contagious diseases. eir discovery has saved more lives than any other medical breakthrough. Today, the causes of many disorders are now viewed as immunologic, including those of a metabolic, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and ophthalmologic nature. Stephen A. Ralph“A world-class eye institute, led by world-class physicians and researchers, located in a world-class community,” is how Stephen A. Ralph, Doheny Eye Institute’s newest board member, describes the Institute’s approaching move to its Pasadena campus. Having served for over three decades at Huntington Memorial Hospital, 22 years as President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Ralph is uniquely positioned to recognize both excellence in medicine and the qualities which make Pasadena an engaged and supportive community.

Board leadership comes as a natural extension of Mr. Ralph’s accomplished career. Growing up in a small Vermont town, he watched his parents give back to the community. His father, a local business leader and a member of the hospital board, worked tirelessly as part of a community team to ensure quality healthcare for the town’s residents. A University of Ver-mont business graduate, he first pursued a banking career in Boston. However, his parents’ example of community service and his own commitment to healthcare beckoned. A Master of Healthcare Administration from the University of Minneso-ta provided the transition. Heading west, Mr. Ralph served an administrative residency at University of Arizona Medical Center, the state’s largest and, at the time, newest state-of-the-art medical facility. His time in residency not only initiated

his career, but it was in the Grand Canyon State where he met Sue, who became his wife and the mother of their two sons, Christopher and Nicholas.

A position as Executive Vice President at California Hospi-tal encouraged Mr. Ralph’s final move from the east coast to the west coast. Four years later, in 1984, he began his tenure at Huntington Memorial Hospital, becoming President in 1995. His leadership guided Huntington forward to become a top-ranked, regional hospital and established it as the landmark facility everyone knows and recognizes today.

During his time at Huntington Memorial Hospital, Mr. Ralph also developed an appreciation for Doheny’s reputation in vision care. Dr. Stephen Ryan, Doheny President, served on the hospital’s board for almost a decade. Mr. Ralph’s relation-ship with Dr. Ryan made a lasting impression too. “Steve Ryan was legendary,” Mr. Ralph offers with admiration. “He was a quiet, thoughtful leader who really knew how to get things done.” During this same period, Mr. Ralph came to personally appreciate Doheny’s exceptional care when his wife required specialized cornea treatment, which she received from Dr. Ronald Smith.

Steve and Sue’s community interests and involvement have kept both engaged with the network of organizations that make Pasadena a desirable place to live and work. Steve has served as President of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce and presently serves on the boards of Pasadena Senior Cen-ter and the Cancer Support Community. Sue, for many years a local teacher, served on the PTA and has been a board mem-ber of the YMCA. In many ways, the Pasadena area reminds them of where they grew up in Vermont and Iowa. Fortunately, both of their sons and their grandchildren reside in the area.

To Stephen Ralph, Doheny’s move to the Pasadena area makes perfect sense. After all, it is home to other world-class institutions like Caltech, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Art Center, and The Norton Simon Museum, to name a few. Doheny Eye Institute will perfectly complement this circle of excellence. He expects Pasadena, with its sense of community spirit and support, to greet the Institute with open arms. These are values which resonate with his Vermont upbringing and which he saw modeled by his parents. The influence of his New England roots can be heard as he explains, “Pasadena is a community that stands up and stands by its organizations and supports their success.” As a new board member he antic-ipates helping foster Doheny’s partnership with the community.

In seeking a range of responses and treatments, immunologic research has changed the face of modern medicine and holds a place in all specialties.

A Gala Celebration (Top) Sopranos Bianca Orsi and Michele Patzakis (Bottom left to right) Alyce Williamson with Dr. SriniVas Sadda, Davis Gaines, Maureen Sprunger, Luminaires President, Alyce Williamson, Peggy Schmid, Benefit Chair

It’s All About Love, Celebrating Alyce Williamson“It’s all about love!” proclaims Alyce de Roulet Williamson when asked what motivates her community service and philanthropy. Raised to support what she believes in, she adds, “When I see something important, I do what I can.”

It is no wonder that this Luminaires founder, who readily proclaims “love” for community service, was honored on Valentine’s Day last year with The Vision Award to celebrate her 40 years of membership in the organi-zation and generosity to Doheny Eye Institute. Along the way, Alyce has chaired and planned three successful fundraisers for the group. She is a lively and energetic community leader with infectious enthusiasm, who read-ily draws others into her philanthropic pursuits. And, she is also willing to shake up convention for the sake of a good cause. While her entrance into the ballroom of the Langham Hotel

in Pasadena in February 2020 was greeted by the warm applause of the over 200 in attendance, she recalls an earlier occasion when she was asked to arrive in the same space, riding sidesaddle on horseback, dressed in a full ballgown, to kick off another fundraising celebration. “I’ve enjoyed a wonderful and exciting life,” Alyce re-lates, and such fun moments for good causes are some of the highlights she cherishes.

The Williamson family has not only supported Doheny Eye Insti-tute but has also benefitted from its vision care. Following a Luminaires sponsored Doheny lecture on mac-ular degeneration several years ago, Alyce went home and performed the suggested self-test. Concerned, she followed-up the next day with a call to the Doheny Eye Center UCLA and has received care and treatment from

Dr. Sadda ever since. On an earlier occasion, her late husband, Warren, known affectionately to family and friends as Spud, came to Doheny-UC-LA virtually blind as a result of a se-rious infection. Following successful treatment and a subsequent cataract surgery, his vision returned and was better than it had been in decades. These experiences add to her commit-ment to Doheny.

Alyce also enjoys other special ties to the Doheny legacy. Estelle Doheny, the Institute’s founder, was godmother to Alyce’s mother. In fact, her parents were married in the private chapel at the Doheny’s mansion. These connec-tions and their examples led Alyce to the opportunities and responsibilities of philanthropic service throughout the greater Los Angeles area, a city she truly loves. She has served on the
