Lucy Goldie onboard the

Logos Hope Apart from people, thick custard and fresh vegetables; one of the

other things I have come to realise that I miss from home is

fellowship with the St James WAGS. To be around a large group of

like minded and similar cultured ladies. I miss sharing fellowship

with a variety of ages. The majority of the ship ladies are in their

late teens or early twenties and so I wondered how the few ladies in

their early thirty’s+ manage on the ship. After talking to one of my

friends, a mother of three, I found out a bit of her story and how

God is using her on the ship - not just as a Mum but also her

ministry (with the added bonus of fellowship) with the ship ladies.

This story below is Hilda’s story as she wrote it for the Logos Hope

website:

"When OM called my husband, Ernst, to be Logos Hope's cook in

2010, I didn't know if I should bring my knitting," recalls Hilda

Schneebeli of Switzerland. "But when the people in the elderly home

where Ernst had been chef offered to give us three big boxes of

yarn we said okay, in faith!"

Hilda was born in Argentina but her grandmother is Swiss German.

When she was invited to visit Switzerland for three months and

work in a Christian organisation she met Ernst. Even before they

married in 2003, Ernst told Hilda that he wanted to work on an OM

ship one day. Hilda volunteered in the offices of OM Switzerland for

a while and by the time they actually moved on board they had

three small children.

"I came with a six-month-old baby and two girls, aged four and two.

It was a hard adjustment to the ship but I knew we'd come for a

purpose and we saw God in every step.

"I love our cabin," she continues. "The children like the ship and

they have good teachers. They understand so much about world

geography! Mondays (a day off for many of the crew) are family

days and we try to spend them together off the ship."

After Hilda had settled in she told the Lord, "'I have my family, but

what else do you want me to do here?' I thought of my knitting and

brought it to a wives’ (WOW - Women of the Word) meeting. Even

though the next port would be hot we started hour-long knitting

sessions to make things to give away. Then we extended to one and

7

a half hours and had a really good time

together. Tenerife and other places didn't

need our knitting, but then we went to

India. Some people from OM Nepal visited

and said they wanted to give baby blankets

to people in the mountains. We finished ten

blankets and they were thrilled. God uses our small gifts for His

glory, even when we don't know how."

When Hilda and the women finished the three boxes of wool they'd

been given, her home church sent more. She had noticed that many

of the single girls wanted to learn how to knit, too. "On the ship you

can learn different

languages and different

skills to use anywhere you

go. So now I teach the

girls twice a week. Some

make toys or blankets or

other items."

The Schneebeli family are

grateful that the Lord has

been able to use them,

and as a wife and mother

Hilda affirms: "When God

calls the whole family, He has a plan for the children, too. I would

advise other families who are considering the ship, don't look at

what others do or say. Be sure it's the calling of God, and see if

your skills fit in. He will do the rest!"

I love seeing how God uses the whole family. Me, I can't attend the

knitting classes at the moment because the lessons are taught

during the day (when her children are at school: when I am

working). But I keep looking out for other evening options.

Speaking of WAGs though, I’d just like to mention that I’m

continuing to enjoy my St James “The WAGs Cookbook”. I bought it

when I was home at Christmas and brought it back to the ship with

me. My favourite recipe is 'John's Fish Pie'!!! I do enjoy making

meals from it and LOVE reading the little stories that go with them.

Things like this, keep me feeling close to home.

Lucy’s latest newsletter can be found at the back of church or from

the parish office. You can also still buy a WAGs cookbook - copies

are available from Cornerstone, with all proceeds going towards

Cornerstone.

Mission

FOCUS

Year of Vision Over the past few months we have been considering what God is calling

us to do and be over the next five to ten years. We are considering

what our God given vision is as we go forward in discipleship and

mission. Recently we have been considering what it means to be whole

life disciples and what vision God may

be calling us to as individuals and as a

church. We are living in exciting times

and something is stirring in us as we

look forward to all God has in store.

To this end our teaching will focus on

Vision and the theme for the year is ‘A

Year of Vision’. Therefore, we will be

looking at a lot of visionary biblical

teaching and visionary books of the Bible. In the mornings the focus will

be on the book of Revelation from chapter four on. This fantastic but

sometimes difficult book gives an awesome vision of God’s power over

history and how the church is victorious even in the midst of a very

difficult world. It was a great encouragement to the Christians of the

first century to know that their awesome God held everything together

and would in the end be victorious over all the powers that seek to

stand against him and his church. Therefore, we have a lot to learn

from what God may say to us through it as to who we should be as a

church in an equally changing world today.

In the evenings we will look at three different books until Christmas:

Zechariah 11-14, Lamentations, and 2 Corinthians 11-13.

This section of Zechariah talks about hope after failure; some from the

nation of Israel return after exile to Jerusalem but the former glory of

the great kings that once ruled there is no longer yet God speaks to

them of the hope of a coming king who will bring justice and a new era

for his people as he cleanses them from their sins. There is a new hope

for his people.

Building on from this is the book of Lamentations that speaks of the

pain of seeing the original vision of the people of God die as they are

removed from the land God gave them because of their sins against

him and each other. It picks up the idea of how to hold a vision in the

midst of confusing and painful circumstances. It will be a powerful

antidote to our sometimes triumphalist expectations and attitudes and

help us to consider the vision God has given to us when times seem

difficult and the vision seems far off.

SJC Women’s Fellowship

Hello Ladies,

Are you free on a Monday afternoon? If

so, why not come along to the Parish

Centre and make new friends with

members of the Women’s Fellowship?

We start at 2.45pm and finish around

4.15pm (or when the last one goes

home!).

We usually spend time singing a few

songs and praying together, as well as

plenty of time to chat after we hear from

a guest speaker.

Among our guest speakers this term are

Dawn Mallon, Christine and David Reay,

Canon Jan Kearton and Garry Ion.

So why not meet with us for fun and

fellowship?

Looking forward to meeting you.

God Bless, Joan White.

Finally, these final chapters of 2 Corinthians narrate Paul’s struggle with

the Church at Corinth as they doubt who God has called him to be and

he is forced to assert what God has called him to be and do. This will be

of great encouragement to us all as we deal with the many doubts that

we often have about who we are and what God has called us to do for

him.

Interspaced throughout the term will be some sermons that look at the

headlines and what a Christian response to them may be; and our Hot

Potato sermons that will consider those difficult questions we have as

Christians in the 21st century. Please do give your tough questions that

you may be wrestling with to John for the coming year.

The preaching team have some challenging material to consider,

prepare and preach in this coming year. So please pray for them, as

they seek what God may be saying through his word to us in the

coming year and as we together discern his vision for us all over the

years to come.

We would love to invite you to our

Autumn Alpha

Launch Evening

Thursday 19th September 2013

7.30pm at the Parish Centre.

Alpha is a great opportunity to

explore the meaning of life in an

informal way. Why not grab a

friend and join us for some great

home baked treats and find out more?

Here’s what a few of our guests from past Alpha Courses have said:

“We got so much more from the Alpha course than we had

anticipated. We also really enjoyed the group discussions and

meeting new people”. David & Jennifer Hamilton

“I would wholeheartedly recommend the course to anybody

who is wanting to find out more about the Christian faith in

an open and relaxed atmosphere where you can ask any

questions” Simon & Jacqueline Ghey

“Alpha has totally recharged my batteries and reminded me

just how great it is to be in a real relationship with a living

God. And the cakes each week were amazing!” Karen

Greenwood

“I think it is amazing and fulfilling and something that people

should really try and do.” Anne Bowie

So why not come along and see for yourself? Alpha will run on

Thursday evenings from the 19th September until the 5th

December (with one week off for half-term break). You don’t have

to commit to the whole course - feel free to just

come along to the Launch Evening and see if it’s for

you. We’d love to see you there!

You can contact the Alpha team on 810 616 or at

[email protected] or look us up on facebook:

Making Music:

You, Me, Both, All?

How many titles for groups of instruments can you name between

soloist musician and orchestra? Let’s see now, there’s duet, trio,

quartet, quintet (boring already...) ... string... brass... chamber...

Well, there are lots, all kinds of ensembles! Each can make a

particular contribution to our musical appreciation and enjoyment.

The variety can even give special impact when a piece we usually

hear in one particular way is played by a different combination of

instruments. The “Night on a Bare Mountain” we usually hear scored

for a whole orchestra, but Mussorgsky originally wrote the piece for

solo piano - and the contrast is striking and interesting.

So, why this sudden commitment to the cultural growth of our

fellowship, as if I could aspire or presume to that!? At a recent half

day of prayer Jonathan, Kate and I were trying to find a metaphor

that could do justice to the conclusions of our recent Leadership

Weekend. These included issues to do with, “what are we doing

when we’re gathered?” and “what are we doing when we’re

scattered?”, and “what’s the link?”, all within the scope of “whole

life discipleship”.

We talked about some of the biblical pictures of life together as a

Church (the body; the vine) which mainly illustrated our inter-

dependence and potential for growth (fruitfulness or otherwise...)

and the stupidity in being competitive or unreconciled. Neither of

these seemed to open our reflection or help make sense of our

being scattered or gathered or becoming better whole-life disciples.

But what if our lives are there to praise, to make music, to make a

joyful sound? The music we make has differing impact depending on

whether we’re by ourselves, or combined in different ways, or

together as a full orchestra. What if our mission and ministry has

something to do with the quality and impact of

these differing sounds? Now we can ask some

interesting questions about the quality of our

music in all its variety. For instance, we can ask,

what is a “Home Group?” Is it the second violins

practising together or a chamber orchestra? (If

the latter, how do we rejoice in the different

experiences, inspiration, gifts and personalities

in the group?)

A Day in the Life of a

St James Shops Manager Whilst no day is ever the same on Denton

Street, despite its familiarity and regular

faces, here is an example of a day in the life

of a St James Shops Manager!

Today is Tuesday. I’ve not picked Tuesday

for any reason, there’s nothing overly special

about Tuesdays, although every day has its

own little special bits!

8.40am: I arrive at Cornerstone after a nice

brisk 20 minute walk to the office and find a

few gifts on my desk from the night before.

That particular Monday evening had been our monthly craft group

and they had left us some handmade coasters and bunting to sell in

the shop. This gave me a display idea for the variety of handmade

items (made here or elsewhere) we sell here. They came with a nice

handwritten and signed note with some recommended prices – one

less thing to worry about! I sent an appropriate thank you to the

bearer of these gifts.

8.50am: I set up my computer (having had it at home the night

before to work on some publicity for our new Film Club starting in a

few weeks). Checked emails. Responded to a request for a meeting

and discussion to do with the follow-on group from the Alpha course

that has recently finished here.

8.55am: The doorbell rings - Jonathan is joining us for staff

prayers. Start putting down chairs so we have somewhere to meet

for prayer. As I finish and make coffee, the rest of the full-time

team arrive and we meet to read our morning devotional and pray.

9.45am: The volunteer team

start to arrive. We open up the

coffee bar, make another

coffee and I settle down for a

meeting with Jonathan, during

which time a couple of

contractors arrive on site.

15

10.45am: Check the contractors are happy and know what they are

doing for us that day and show one of them around who hasn’t been

on site before.

11.00am: Get some time to take stock of the day and look forward

to the rest of the day. Share a picture of some of the craft items on

Facebook and check interactions with the page. Respond as

appropriate.

11.30am: Visit the Op Shop and

say hi to our morning team and

our busy team in the stock room.

Return to Cornerstone and check

the team are ok and have a quick

catch up! Time for a series of

phone calls, help a customer find

a phone number, and chat with

some of the customers - regular

and new.

12.45pm: It is Ericson’s last day, so we have a treat and enjoy a

cheap, nice pub lunch to say thank you and bye! It’s important to

get some quality time with the team and make sure they know

they’re appreciated.

2.15pm: Spend a short time catching up with email before a chat

with an off duty team member, and a meeting with a young woman

who needs help finding stuff for her new house as she moves out of

a Hostel. Try to point her in the direction of help, and check she has

had the support she can get from various services. When she

leaves, I put together a few basics

from our stock room for her to pick

up tomorrow. Use the time to check

in again at the Op Shop and see

everyone is ok.

3.30pm: Back to Cornerstone to

check emails, chat with the

afternoon team, catch up on a

couple of bits of admin and do

some cleaning upstairs.

4.30pm: Write notes, and do a bit of planning before heading home

to the family. Back later on this evening to catch up on more admin

and plan a few more things for the rest of the week!

Marilia says Farewell

Marilia Nakhla

I am very grateful for all of my time here.

God opened the door and prepared the way

for me to come back. As most of you know He

has filled my life with great surprises,

especially in the last several years. But here I

am once again finishing my time with St.

James.

It is amazing how much God can change in us

and in our lives in only one year. He used

good and bad things to shape my character

and to help me to grow. In my journey at

Cornerstone I have had amazing moments, great conversations and

I saw people's lives changed because of the grace of God.

I am constantly thanking God for all the people I know here, for

Cornerstone and St. James. I find it very nice that I can use this

magazine to share my gratitude with all of you. Thank you all my

friends for the great moments and for the daily sharing of our lives.

As most of you know, this second time in Carlisle I got married to

my best friend, and I am so happy I could get married at St. James.

Not just because it is a gorgeous church but it also has been a big

part of my life. I am so thankful for all of you that helped with

songs, organising, opening your houses to receive our families and

all sorts of things, a MASSIVE THANK YOU!

My official time with the church and Cornerstone finishes at the end

of September, however I will still be around for a bit longer because

of Andrew's work. We are planning on moving to the USA once I

have my visa. However, because it takes a while to get it and our

visas expire for this country, we will travel first to Brazil while we

wait to receive the visa. I am happy Andrew will spend some time in

Brazil because he will learn more

about my family and my culture.

We would appreciate prayers for

my visa to the USA, job situation

for Andrew and also for our future

as we start our lives together.

Walking with God & the Dog

A Safe Future

Dougal is still with us! He is nearly 13 now, and getting greyer and

slower, but he still looks forward to his daily walks

with his ball.

We had a lovely quiet walk this morning because I left

my mobile at home! As I walked, I was bringing to

God many situations which are weighing me down,

mainly on behalf of others. As I prayed, the words of

this old hymn came to mind:-

I do not know what lies ahead, the way I cannot see;

yet One stands near to be my guide, He’ll show the way to me:

I know who holds the future, and He’ll guide me with His hand;

with God things don’t just happen, everything by Him is planned.

So as I face tomorrow, with its problems large and small,

I’ll trust the God of miracles, give to Him my all.

I do not know how many days of life are mine to spend;

but One who knows and cares for me will keep me to the end:

I do not know the course ahead, what joys and grief’s are there;

but One is near who fully knows, I’ll trust His loving care:

September is the start of a new year in many respects. Some reading

this face an uncertain future: - new school, new job, no job,

bereavement, illness, university. Whatever it is you face, trust in the

One who knows your future, and is walking with you.

Youth News:

Ignite 2013-2014

It has been a fantastic and challenging year being involved with Youth

Work and to have done so with a fantastic team: Kate Davidson, Carl

Brannan, Gemma Fenton, Ericson Caron, Claire Mill, Susanna Libby and

Izzy Mallon. Unfortunately, Ericson has returned to Brazil and Gemma

has had to step back from Ignite because of work pressures. We give

thanks to God for them both and all that they did for the young people;

they have been a real blessing and will be greatly missed.

We have been through many changes over the last year as we

transitioned from T.B.C. to Ignite. Though change is often difficult, as a

team we felt it has been worth it because of the increased relationships

and quality time that we have had with the young people. It has also

been a joy to see the changes that have happened in their lives. God is

at work. Please pray for Alex, Annie, Bethany, Daniel, David, Dylon,

Eleanor, Elle, Emily, Ethan, Heidi, Jack, Kayleigh, Kayleigh, Keaton,

Lara, Liam, Louise, Lucy, Robbie, Robyn, Ryan, Shona, Stacey, Toni and

Warren. Ask for God’s blessing upon them, their families and their lives

as they start a new term and year.

Last year our program was

largely based on the Youth Alpha

course. We had some fantastic

discussions and also some very

memorable social nights. We

would appreciate lots of prayer for the coming year as we plan, prepare

and discern what God’s vision is for Ignite. We are hoping to take the

group away over the coming year, possibly to Soul Survivor.

In light of the current gaps in our team, we are asking our congregation

whether they prayerfully believe God is calling them to this ministry.

Youth work is challenging but very rewarding over the long term and

engages with young people towards the end of the most receptive part

of their lives. Proclaiming the gospel gets harder as people get older

and the most fruit comes when people are young. In many ways the

cutting edge of mission is among the young. Is God calling you to work

with, inspire and share your faith with the young people of Denton

Holme? If you suspect he is please do come and talk to Jonathan or

Kate about joining the team and we will pray with you to discern God’s

call upon your life.

Jonathan Moores Blessings,
