Connect Nursing Workflow- Med Administration
Select Medications from the
Patient Menu to begin the
medication process.
The Medication Activity List
displays meds due within the past
48 hours and up to 12 hours in
the future.
The default view for future meds is 2
hours with options to also view 4 hours
or 12 hours.
Meds are categorized into
Unscheduled, Scheduled, PRN, and
Continuous.
• Discontinued orders show with a line
through them.

medications you
want to administer
from the Med
Activity View and
Select “Administer”
in the lower right
corner. Meds move
to the “Med Cart”
to complete
additional charting
requirements.

The following must be addressed prior to administering a
medication: Nurse Review, Pharmacy Verification, and Late
charting reason.

Medication Administration – Late Charting
The Late Alert will fire in Connect Nursing for medications
administered more than 60 minutes past their due time
and the nurse will be prompted to enter a reason.
The late reason can be applied to multiple tasks at once.

Medication Administration - Not Done Charting
Medications can be charted as Not Done in Connect
Nursing by selecting the medications and choosing the
“Not Done” action instead of Administer.
Users are prompted to enter a reason.

Medication Administration - Icons
Icons on the Medication Activity List
Icon Description
Immediate Priority – This icon is displayed when a medication task has a
priority of STAT or Now.
Pharmacy Verification – This icon indicates that the medication order has
not been verified by a pharmacist.
Nurse Review – This icon indicates that the order needs nurse review.
Pharmacy Rejected – This icon indicates that the medication order has
been rejected by the pharmacy.
When a medication is in a rejected status, the application does not display
other icons, but displays only the pharmacy reject icon and the following
text instead of the last given information. Rejected by Pharmacy. You are
not allowed to document an activity that is in a rejected status.

Scan Patient Wristband
The patient can be
scanned at any point in the
administration process.
Note the blue status bar appears
once the patient has been scanned.
If the patient wristband scan is
bypassed, the user has to enter a
reason for not scanning the patient
before signing the documentation.

Connect Nursing Workflow- Scan Medication
After scanning the medication,
the user can enter additional
charting elements, nurse
witness, etc if not already done.
They can also scan the patient after
scanning the medication if desired.
If the medication scan is bypassed,
the user has to enter a reason for not
scanning before signing the
documentation.
Once all required information is
met, the user will save the
documentation and then sign off
on the medications from the
“Sign” folder.

Medication Administration - Incremental Scanning
Incremental Scanning is allowed.
An underdose is allowed. No alert is presented.
An overdose is not allowed. A message is presented to the user.

An Overdose is a hard stop and is indicated by a red delta.

Medication Administration – Med Interval Alerts
Med Interval Alerts will fire in Connect Nursing for doses
being administered too close together.
The user has to select a reason for choosing to continue
with administration.
If a minimum interval is
not defined for the
frequency, the user
receives the alert
message below.

Medication Administration - Nurse Witness
Meds requiring a witness have text to indicate the need for
a second user to scan their badge and/or search for the
user. The Witness is required to enter their password.
The witness can be added to one or many meds in single workflow.

Only medications that require a witness will default to
selected. The nurse has the ability to also select optional
orders for nurse witness if desired.

details.
The witness personnel
selects the “Next” option
to review each
medication.

After all medications have
been reviewed, the
witness will be presented
with a summary of all the
medications he/she is
witnessing.
The witness can enter
his/her credentials by
manually entering a
username/password or by
scanning his/her badge.

Medication Administration - Required Charting Elements
Required charting elements can be completed before or
after entering a witness.
The following need to be completed prior to witnessing otherwise the
user has to re-witness the med order: dose/volume amount, diluent,
route, rate, and performed by user.
The yellow delta indicates charting elements need to be
filled out. Once complete click “save” in the upper right.

Medication sites can be selected by searching in the med
charting window or selecting from the list.

Medication Administration – Viewing Comments
Within the charting window, the user is able to view
comments. This includes Order comments, Product/MAR
notes, Special Instructions, and Admin Notes. The user can
also add his/her own comment.
Comments are indicated by
a grey circle.

Medication Administration – Charting by Proxy
Charting by proxy is allowed with Connect Nursing.
This can be done by manually searching for his/her name or by
scanning the user’s badge in the charting window.

Medications can be charted as Not Given in Connect
Nursing from the Med Cart view (after selecting the med to
administer) or from within the charting window. Users are
required to enter a reason.
