Dear YMCA Family and Friends,AS WE REFLECT ON 2019, ONE MAJOR THEME COMES TO MIND – Changemakers! Every day, our community partners, members, volunteers and staff work together to deliver the promise of strengthening community by connecting all people to their potential, purpose and each other. Together in 2019, these changemakers delivered this promise to more than 17,000 people through programs that focused on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Individuals of all ages walk through the doors at the Y with something different they are looking to achieve; and the Y makes it possible to turn those goals into accomplishments. As a friend of the Y, you’re aware of the critical work that our Y does every day. From preventing summer learning loss for low-income children; to helping cancer survivors regain their strength and stamina; or from ensuring that families have positive spaces to play together; to teaching kids to be safe around water and build their swimming skills – the Y has been a cornerstone for the Valparaiso community. And, every day at the Y is filled with children, adults, seniors and families embracing a different possibility.

What makes our Y special is that we all work together to create these possibilities. Through your time, encouragement, support, and donations, you help provide the gift of possibility to others. And each of these possibilities is available to anyone, regardless of their ability to pay.

This year we celebrate our first Changemaker awards to honor those who help to strengthen our community by sharing their knowledge and resources, along with their innate desire to make the world a better place. With friends of the Y lending their hearts and resources, we all helped to continue the legacy of the Y responding to the needs of our neighbors.

We all came together as Changemakers!

BETTER TOGETHER We are better together serving our members’ healthcare and wellness needs.

St. Mary Medical Center and the Valparaiso Family YMCA are in the fifth year of their partnership. Both organizations are committed to working together to provide a wide variety of healthcare services, programs and information for Valparaiso residents and Valpo Y members. Our healthcare partnership is focused on a holistic-health approach to living well. In this fast-paced world, it’s more important than ever for us to focus on what matters most – delivering support in fitness and health to help you and your family live well.

During 2019, St. Mary Medical Center provided a variety of programs and services for members of the Valpo Y and for the community, both at the YMCA and locally at the St. Mary Medical Center Valparaiso Health Center, located at 3800 St. Mary Drive, Valparaiso. This year, St. Mary Medical Center added a second Immediate Care location at 1451 Morthland Drive, near US 30. Called South Valpo Immediate Care, the location also offers physical therapy, multi-specialty physician offices, and occupational health services nearby.

Valpo Y members and the community also benefited from physician presentations and guest speakers who offered insight and education that help participants understand sometimes complicated topics, including diabetes, heart health and breast cancer. The annual Healthy Family Day event brought more than 400 people to the Y for health screenings and information.

Integrated Wellness again provided services to hundreds of Y members and Valparaiso residents, and Physical Therapy Services continued to grow its onsite clinic practice, which offers physical and aquatic therapy services in a supportive

and motivating YMCA environment. Physical Therapist Brian Hoener, PT, DPT, also leads the Rock Steady Boxing program. This therapy regimen helps Parkinson’s patients to improve fitness and mobility, and class membership continues to grow.

In addition to these services, Christy Cleveland, RN, BSN, continues to serve as a knowledgeable resource offering compassionate care and assistance to our members. She provides routine diagnostic screenings, weekly blood pressure checks and information about St. Mary Medical Center’s physicians and specialty services. She also teaches the Y’s home blood pressure management program’s monthly nutrition classes. Throughout 2019, Christy consulted with nearly 3,100 individuals, completed more than 2,200 screenings and found more than 400 abnormal results. Important access to these education and screening opportunities have proven to be a valuable benefit to Y members.

St. Mary Medical Center shares the Y’s values and supports its Mission. They are the Presenting Sponsor at all of our fundraising events, including: Y Bash; Golf Outing and Style Show. Through their sponsorship, the Annual Campaign has reached its fundraising goal. Also in 2019, St. Mary Medical Center sponsored the Valparaiso Parks Department’s Valpo Velocity Bike Share program with a bike-sharing station located near the Y. This amenity encourages members to ride bikes to the Y and other local destinations instead of driving.

BETTER TOGETHER PROVIDING THE RIGHT PATH TO CONTINUE TO SERVE AS YOUR TRUSTED PARTNER IN HEALTH AND WELL-BEING. THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING US THAT PRIVILEGE.

Let’s Celebrate the 2019 CHANGEMAKERS

7

is a new award honoring outstanding

Valparaiso Family YMCA supporters.

A Changemaker is someone who lives the mission of the Y, makes extraordinary and

unique contributions, and lends their talents and skills to the betterment of the Y and the Valparaiso community.

This inaugural class of Changemakers

represents the talent and passion of our

amazing volunteers.

Julia HessJulia’s Y story begins with engaging her children

at the old Y and leads to her serving as a board member, the 2019 Annual Campaign Chair, and the Chief Volunteer Officer for the 2020-2021 term. She shares her leadership and resources from the heart, “our involvement is about our beliefs.” Julia and her husband contribute to

organizations that are the “vibrant fabric of our

community.” She sees the Y as a pillar in the community, and one that lives up to

its reputation and cause of building strong communities.

Christy ClevelandServing as the St. Mary Health & Wellness Coordinator

at the Y, Christy believes she has the “best job in the world.” She loves working with the Y staff and members,

“meeting new people every day and being able to touch their lives in a meaningful way is rewarding.”

Whether it’s researching, teaching, or taking blood pressure, Christy loves helping people feel comfortable

with getting care. She is passionate about opportunities to learn and share with the community.

Nate NunnellyNate has a long history with the Y’s Ringing in

Spring race, from running it with high school and college teams, to leading it as the volunteer Race Coordinator. Both he, and now his daughter, have grown up with Y youth sports and swim lessons from Miss Ruth. Nate believes in the Y, “bringing the

community together, helping all ages stay active and healthy, and supporting youth engagement

and families. The Y is a part of what makes Valpo special, a community

people see value in belonging to.”

CHANGEMAKERS

Rob ThorgrenRob’s deeply rooted history with the Y stems from

his family and through his community leadership. “The Y is a great board to cut your teeth, it helps you contribute and come up with ideas. I liked it so much I stayed for ten years!” He appreciates the leadership and work it takes to make the Y a

success. “The Y is essential to our community – not only for fitness –

but for socialization, team building and overall citizenship.” The Y is thankful for

Rob’s commitment to building strong community in Valparaiso.

Jane SzymzcakBoard member, Jane Szymzcak, trusts the Y and

the values it stands for. “From childcare to seniors, youth sports, swim lessons, yoga, basketball,

physical therapy, the Y has it all. The Y builds confidence, healthy minds and healthy bodies.” The Y has always been a good fit for her family, “we are sports people, always

like to participate.” Jane’s passion shines through her board service, encouraging people to get involved,

become members or become donors and sponsors.

Tom NewtonAfter growing up with the Y, Tom looked to get

involved when he moved back to town. He quickly spent ten of the last eleven years serving on the board, committees and dreaming up the signature fundraising event, YBash, with fellow board member,

Rob Thorgren. “The Y is more than brick and mortar, it is its mission, helping

the greater good, supporting physical and mental health for the community.

The Y is a respite for so many in the community – and we need to support it.”

With the current state of the world’s marketplace, 2019 seems itself like it could have been years ago!

January began with a bang, as we were working our way through the results of an incredibly volatile December just a few weeks prior. In 2019, the world saw large rebounds in stocks, bonds, oil, as well as gold. The gains of the market could arguably be driven from the Federal Reserve, who made three separate rate cuts. The addition of increased corporate earnings compared to 2018 certainly did its part as well. All major sectors were able to finish with higher values, paving the way for 2019 to be the eleventh year of the bull market, making it the longest bull market in U.S. history, according to Fidelity.

With the help of our financial partners at StrategIQ® Financial Group, our Foundation was able to take part in these fortunate rebounds.

Our Foundation ended 2019 with a balance of $1,678,085. This represents a gain of 12% since the start of 2019.

Thanks to this growth, we were able to continue our mission of providing essential funding to the YMCA, to the tune of $67,439.36. We were also able to grant four scholarships worth $1,500 each to high school seniors in Porter County, who we believe will have the upmost ability to succeed at the collegiate level and beyond. As our Foundation grows, we look forward to the chance to provide much more to the Valparaiso Family YMCA and our community!

We are also fortunate to partner with the Porter County Community Foundation, where multiple endowment funds have been established by wonderfully generous families and champions of our mission. Funds held in perpetuity at the Porter County Community Foundation in our name had a 2019-year end balance of $224,744.

We are grateful for all contributions to the Foundation, regardless of size. Every dollar helps to ensure that the Valparaiso Family YMCA will continue to make a difference in peoples’ lives for decades to come.

For more information about the Foundation and the Infinity Circle, or to contribute, please contact our CEO, Bob Wanek, or Senior Director of Advancement, Tracey McElree.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENTEnsuring youth reach their potential

STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY IS OUR CAUSE2019 Community Impact GuideVALPARAISO FAMILY YMCAFrom exercise to education, from volleyball to volunteerism, from preschool to preventive health, the Y doesn’t just strengthen bodies – the Y strengthens community.

We are a unique, charitable organization, created to meet the individual needs of our community in Valparaiso. We are a welcoming and inclusive community. A place to connect with others. A safe place to learn and grow. A place to find motivation for your health. And a neighborhood resource caring for those who need us most by providing tools for a healthy and rewarding life.

Strong children need a strong community committed to their success. We rise to the demand for more quality early childhood education, for social and emotional development opportunities, and engagement outside of the classroom – regardless of ability to pay.

I don’t believe I would have been able to maintain my sobriety of twelve years without the YMCA. ~Anonymous member thanks the Y for help becoming sober

“I had graduated high school and played college football, but when I became an alcoholic and an addict, my life spiraled out of control and I lost everything I worked so hard for. After I finally got the help I needed for my disease, I came to the Y looking for the opportunity to exercise and better myself physically, emotionally and mentally.

I was so grateful to receive financial assistance and to feel accepted by the staff I met in that process. I am a current member of the Y, no longer needing assistance, and am happy to pay for my full membership. I am working full time and continue to help others who are affected like I was and am. The Valparaiso Family YMCA has been a huge influence in my recovery process.”

Dot Nuechterlein shares how important the Y is for older adultsY member, retired Valparaiso University

professor and published author, Dot Nuechterlein shares how the Y helps seniors

stay socially engaged and physically active.

“The Y is a great place to expand your friendship circle. You see people you recognize here – people who may not be

friends but they are always friendly.”Dot loves how it’s easy to fit in. “Specific programming meets people’s interests and stages of life. The staff understand when we have different abilities than we had when we were younger. The classes are inclusive and I always get something out of it.” The Y inspires her to think about her well-being and do something about it.

Beth Bennett-McGrew appreciates Y School Age Childcare “The staff really make my kids feel valued. The Y has made a huge impact on them.” “We recently lost CCDF funding, we just missed the cut-off and the Y looked for everything they could to make this work for us. The Y has been amazing.” Her family receives financial

assistance from the Y’s Annual Campaign. This kind of support gives Beth the ability to work, and to know her children are taken care of - engaged in activities, getting their homework done

and receiving guidance.

My kids love going to the Y!” They love being outside and playing games, hands-on building, experiments and crafts. Beth loves the Y’s commitment to values-based programming. “The Y backs up what my husband and I teach our kids. It means so much to our family.”
