hink about this for a minute. If someone asked you to summarize the content of the Bible what would you say? Well, you might say a lot of things, but I bet you might not say the word ”connections.“

It’s funny though, because at a very basic level that’s what the scriptures are all about. Contemplate the scriptures and you will easily see God’s connection with creation, God’s connection with us, our connection with God, and God’s people connecting with each other. It’s on every page and infused in every word (especially in the word “love” which makes little sense apart from connections!).

It’s that last one, “God’s people connecting with each other,” that we don’t talk about too much, and that’s what we want to celebrate in this issue. Being a follower of Jesus means that we are part of something much larger than us, or to think about it another way, someone larger than us. We don’t think about something like discipleship as relational but the truth is that it is. You see, it isn’t just about coming to church (though that’s great), it’s about being found in Christ and then connecting at a life level so that all who are part of Jesus are also part of each other. That’s what it’s all about (and that’s where the love comes in!). Jesus came to give us life abundant (John 15) and that life comes in the form of the connections we make with other people through the power of the Holy Spirit at work in us.

I pray that what you are about to read inspires you to connect in new ways to God and to others.

May you be blessed,

Don Feuerbach Senior Pastor

his spring LCPC embarked on a new small group adventure called “Connect Groups,” which debuted the beginning of Lent 2016. The idea, formed by Associate Pastor Anne Havrilla, grew

out of a related experience called Starting Point which has been part of the Spiritual Formation ministry since 2010. These small Connect Groups of eight to ten participants were designed to deepen the connection between participants and leaders, participants and other participants, and, of course, the most important connection of all: between participants/leaders and God.

Growing Closer to God and to Each Other

Taking risks in faith can be very rewarding!

T

connectConnect Groups Organizer, Anne HavrillaIt’s been a number of years since small groups have been part of this church’s life, and I felt God prompting me to consider beginning them again in a new way.

Connect Groups connect people to other people; some of whom they know, while others may be new acquaintances. The groups began meeting during Lent and, unlike small groups in the past, all had the same mission and used the same material: Andy Stanley’s video-based series on discipleship, Follow. All the leaders were enthusiastic at our training event and looked forward to how God would work through their groups. Seventeen Connect Groups met at different locations on varied days and times throughout the week. One met in the church on Sunday mornings so that childcare could be provided, while the others met in leaders’ homes. Thanks to the generosity of the Endowment Team, leaders were provided with the resources they needed to host their groups.

There is a certain amount of risk involved in signing up to go to someone’s home for eight weeks, not

knowing the leaders, the other people in the group, or what to expect. Thankfully, a kick-off event in January called “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” gave people a taste of what the Connect Groups would be like. Attendees signed up for dinner on a Saturday evening, not knowing whose home they were going to until they got there. This was a fun event and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Taking risks in faith can be very rewarding!

It’s all too easy to come to worship, look at the back of someone’s head for an hour, and then go home. Or to chat for a few minutes with people you already know. This is not what church was meant to be! I think that the early disciples would be very surprised to see what modern worship is like. The early churches were house churches, where people did know each other—very well. They shared life together. They worshipped, ate, learned about their faith, and cared about each other. When the apostle

Paul wrote to the churches, his understanding of living life in community comes through in advice like: “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” (Romans 12:15). Fellowship was much more than a code word for a cup of coffee! The vision for the Connect Groups was to imitate these early churches and create a deeper fellowship and connection among all who attended.

Connect Group Leader, Lynn MoureyI opened the email and read it. I had to rub my eyes and read it again. You want me to do what?! Lead a Connect Group? I read it one more time, rubbed my old eyes and, yes, that is indeed what it said!I had never led any sort of Bible study or other church-

based group. I was, in a word, terrified! So, I prayed as Pastor Anne suggested, and questioned my capabilities (as she did not). I asked my 15-year-old son, Cameron, what he thought and got an immediate and enthusiastic “Yes, Mom!

You’ll be great! You should do it!” Well, I still wasn’t convinced. So I prayed some

more about it and all I kept hearing was that old saying, “God doesn’t call the qualified, he

qualifies the called.” It was then that I knew it would be just fine.

Fast forward through eight wonderful weeks of Connect Groups 2016! Since attending and finally becoming a member of LCPC years ago, leading a Connect Group has been, by far, one of my most rewarding experiences. I have grown in my faith and as a person and I, personally, feel more connected to my fellow faith seekers and the church. You see, “leading” a Connect Group isn’t really about “leading” at all. It is about listening, sharing, encouraging, and loving. We do this naturally throughout our daily lives. We care for others, we listen when our family members or friends need an ear, we encourage someone through a crisis or illness, and we love. It isn’t about knowing all the Scripture passages—Lord knows, I do not have them memorized! It really is about remaining open to connecting with people we have never met before and deepening connections with those we already know.

We are a large community at LCPC and, at times, that can be overwhelming. Our Connect Group brought me closer to Jesus, no doubt, but it also brought a group of people together who otherwise

rewarding experiences.

may not have met, and it deepened our relationships through our sharing and trusting each week. I experienced an acceptance and a peace not felt before and, even on the weeks I was not at my best, this group lifted me up and reminded me of the power of a foundational connection to our God, and to each other. I pray the Connect Group meetings will continue so that each of you can benefit from deepening your own connections with one another, Jesus, and the church.

So, just remember this when you are called … do not be afraid, God will qualify you!

Connect Group Participant, Claudia JardimI joined one of the Connect Groups for Lent this year at the church. The meeting place for my group was at the home of church member Lynn Mourey, only a mile away from where I live. I didn’t know that before I signed up. Once again, God was taking care of me right from the start. I picked this group because it met on Monday and I wanted to start my week on the right foot (a good thing to do when setting out on the path). I’m so glad I did! Lynn humbly admitted that she was nervous about volunteering to host a group, but she did a fantastic job leading our group in discussion and prayer, making everyone feel comfortable, and being so supportive; and what a gracious host!

We started out week one as a small group of five women. Then two more participants joined our group, along with Lynn’s teenage son. Diversely comprised of teachers, a lawyer, an engineer, a project manager, and a high school student, each participant contributed greatly to some lively discussions and shared unique insights and perspectives. All of us were vulnerable as we shared our life experiences and anecdotes, offering me

much pause for thought and introspection. With deep-reaching questions that came along with the DVD, our relationships to each other and our study progressed week after week.

By the conclusion of the series, I felt more challenged in my walk with the Lord. It reminds me, once again, that there will always be some growing pains in my life as I mature in my faith. Andy Stanley presented each lesson topic in a humorous, real, and relevant way. I miss the old-fashioned Bible study groups where you just bring your Bible, notebook and pen. I guess the age of technology and our fast-paced lives have changed all that, and personal bible study needs to be done at home now! I’m glad I joined a Connect Group and did the Follow study because the takeaway was tremendous; mine to keep for all eternity! Following Jesus requires me to give my all to God. The sacrifice is temporary, but the rewards are eternal. As the disciple Peter said to Jesus: “To whom shall we go, Lord? For You have the words of eternal life!”

ministry curriculum and service projects of Liberty Corner Kids (LCKids). Kelly shared, “We wanted children attending The Children’s Corner to have the same Bible curriculum used in Sunday School. Since school families visit on Sunday mornings, we wanted the children to be comfortable with the Bible stories and lessons. For children who do not have a church home, we wanted them to have the foundation in the Lord that the Frameworks Bible curriculum provides Liberty Corner Kids on Sundays. First Corinthians 3:11 tells us, ‘For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.’ Whether the children grace our doors during the week or on Sundays, they are blessed by this ministry partnership.”

he B-i-b-l-e, yes, that’s the book for me.” Just walk through the hallways of Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church and you will witness children singing to

the Lord and teachers sharing Bible verses; busy little hands making crafts based upon Bible stories; resurrection buns rising in the ovens; or children sewing pressure pillows as a ministry outreach. What is so special about all of this is that it is not just on Sundays anymore!

This year, after receiving approval from the Session, Kelly Tancredi, Liberty Corner Kids Director, and Donna Greco, Director of the Children’s Corner (TCC), developed a ministry opportunity that seamlessly integrates The Children’s Corner (Children’s Corner Kids) into the

Joseph and the Coat of Many ColorsWe all have dreams - for ourselves, our families, and especially for our children. The children’s ministry began this year focusing on the story of Joseph. The story came alive as children created life-size dream coats that were showcased throughout the hallways of the school and church. In a special Sunday worship service shared by both TCC and LCPC families, children performed songs for the congregation and encouraged parents to write down their dreams for their children.

Give Love Away ProjectsThroughout the year TCC and LCKids partner on Give Love Away Projects like putting together shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, cooking for Shepherd’s Pantry and Ziti for the Needy, collecting canned food for the Somerset County Food Bank and God’s Food Pantry, and much more! Give Love Away offers children hands on opportunities to “answer to God’s call to love our neighbor” (Matthew 22:37-39). We encourage young children to share God’s love through their actions by increasing their awareness of the needs of others locally, nationally, and globally. It’s a joy and a privilege to be able to teach children about generosity! It’s even more

gratifying to witness them embrace The Lord’s call in scripture that says, “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God” (Hebrews 13:16).

Easter Egg HuntSeeing the Great Lawn covered in 2500+ brightly colored, stuffed Easter Eggs was an awesome sight! Hundreds of children and their

families came together in community along with LCKids volunteers and the TCC

staff to celebrate the Easter season. After the egg hunt, everyone was

invited inside for refreshments and to participate in additional activities. Children and families enjoyed face painting, crafts, games, and science experiments, as well as a TCC/LCKids “Open House.”

Egg-cellent!

ChapelGet ready to clap your hands and shout if you love Jesus! Each month Ms. Madelin on vocals and Mr. Frank on the guitar lead worship with the children and staff. Their songs of praise fill the Sanctuary with a joyful noise and send a sweet savor of blessing up to the Lord. Pastor Don shares a special story with the children so they can know God and share his love with others. Donna shared, “Through chapel lessons or service projects, we want the children to know the love of Jesus and to share that love by being the hands and feet of Jesus to their families and the community.”

Truly this ministry is perfectly blended to honor the Lord seven days a

week! As tiny mustard seeds of God’s Word are planted in the

hearts and minds of these precious children, we will one day see the fruit—young men and women loving and serving the Lord. “Train up a child in the way he should go, and

when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs

22:6).

13LIVING LIFE TOGETHER

Needles & Threads

welve years ago a small group of women began meeting each week to encourage one another through stories and laughter while doing what they love - using their minds and hands to connect with those in need of warmth, security, and prayers.

While the Needles and Threads group may be small, its impact certainly is not. Many people in the church and community have felt the blessing of the busy hands on Tuesday mornings. Ten fingers, one crochet hook, two or four knitting needles, and one skein of yarn connect stitches into sweaters, adult and baby hats, baby blankets, prayer shawls, lap robes, cowls for seamen, items for veterans, and more. The group knits items throughout the year and stores them during the warmer months to be distributed in the fall.

One recipient of these donations wrote to the church saying, “Thank you so much for your prayers and support while I was hospitalized last week. I love the beautiful shawl. It helped lift me up and keep me warm! Please extend my thanks to the knitting group, as well. What a lovely ministry.”

This year alone, Needles and Threads has donated more than 220 items to people in need, including 190 knit squares which were given to the Bernards Township Library and sent to Africa to be made into afghans. Whether you work on your own items or on items for donation, the smiling ladies of Needles and Threads are always ready to welcome new members to the group, which meets on Tuesdays from 9:30-11:30 am. They will even teach beginners how to knit or crochet! If you can’t make it to group meetings but would still like to show support, Needles and Threads would be grateful for donations of acrylic yarn.

A hidden gem of LCPC, Needles and Threads makes a lasting impact in the community and beyond with every stitch.

was frustrated with God throughout all my hard times and struggles, because I felt like when I cried or called upon him, he was supposed to answer. I felt like he was supposed to come

running because he’s our God,” says Quatasia, a ninth grader from Jersey City.

Quatasia’s grandmother passed away last year. At thirteen, left only with her mother, she found herself evicted from her home. With nowhere left to go, this young woman and her mom spent a short time in a women’s crisis center. God felt far away.

Quatasia first came to New City Kids in 2010. She attended a pilot after-school program which served the Booker T. Washington Apartments in Jersey City for one rocky year. When school ended we wrote it off as a failed attempt to serve kids in a difficult place. But for this young woman, it was a connection that would change her life.

There are many reasons to come to New City Kids: music lessons, an after-school job, summer camp —even sailing lessons. Most high school students enter through the internship tryout (when New City Kids hires all of their teen employees for the year). Children come when their parents sign them up for a safe place to do homework during the afternoon. Everyone comes for a reason. For Quatasia, it was an after-school haven in her neighborhood.

With all the different ways into New City Kids, there’s one experience common to kids who find themselves here: the activities cease to be primary. The job, the homework, the music—they’re important. But there’s more. Relationships grow, blossom, and finally deepen until a community forms that loves and supports each member.

Through her most difficult days, Quatasia kept attending New City Kids’ after-school program, transferring to our site on Fairmount Ave after that first year. She had a place of refuge here where staff loved her and didn’t let her go. Today, Quatasia works as a Teen Life Intern at New City Kids, teaching dance class and mentoring children in 1st-8th grade with passion and empathy.

New City Kids empowers at-risk teens

in Jersey City through community. The connections among staff,

teens, and children make New City Kids a community where

the love of Christ pervades.

New City Kids’ 2016 spring concert was entitled Longing for Home. When young people describe their time here, the one word voiced over and over is “family.” “New City Kids is like a family.” “New City Kids is my second home.” “The staff here are my family.” The connections among staff, teens, and children make New City Kids a community where the love of Christ pervades.

Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church is a part of this incredible community. The church has hosted two concerts, including Longing for Home, welcomed us overnight as we visited colleges on our annual spring break college tour, given financially to support the ministry, and prayed for young people like Quatasia. Today, with the support of partners like Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church, New City Kids runs five after-school programs in two states, serving 420 youth every weekday.

Reflecting on her experience Quatasia says, “I realized God was there for me. He sent somebody to be there for me. He sent New City [Kids].”

17LIVING LIFE TOGETHER

LIVING LIFE TOGETHER16

Bob SpringerIt all started in October of 2014 when Mark Taylor said we should visit every man in the church and invite them into fellowship in Men’s Ministry. There was a joint meeting of all four Men’s Ministry groups where we gathered to create a plan for the Men’s Ministry at Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church. Disciples becoming apostles was what I heard.

On Black Friday 2015, Jerry Cerza and I took a ride to Amish Mike’s to look at a shed for me. We went to breakfast and enjoyed time together during which we voiced our passion for the future of the Men’s Ministry at LCPC. We discovered we had very similar ideas. Obviously, they had been given to us by the Holy Spirit. Those ideas included reaching out to others, first through in-reach and then outreach. Our time together showed us our shared passion and the Holy Spirit took it from there, fanning the flames until our Thursday night group began brainstorming about an event to draw men together. At the suggestion of Mark Taylor, Jerry contacted Lonnie Berger, author of the popular Bible study Every Man a Warrior, and asked him to speak at the event. He agreed and one by one, things fell into place.

Of course, there were challenges each step of the way. The enemy attacks when you are doing the work of the Lord. Just when we were getting a little discouraged, Bill Holmes came to Jerry and shared something God put in his heart. I’ll let Jerry tell you about that.

Jerry CerzaBill Holmes is a sound board operator for the Contemporary Service. I knew him by sight, but I had never actually had a conversation with Bill. One Sunday, I was feeling quite emotional during the Contemporary service, but I could not quite understand why. When the last song ended, Bill Holmes was walking directly toward me with a purpose.

As Bill approached he seemed cautious and said to me, “Hey I don’t know you, but the Lord sent a very clear message to me that I am supposed to deliver to you. Can I ask you, are you praying for your business, or are you in the middle of a project?” I replied, “Well yes, I always pray for my business, but more importantly, I am planning a Men’s Ministry event with Bob Springer and it has been a struggle.”

The next words out of Bill’s mouth were only deliverable by the work of the Holy Spirit. He went on to say, “Well, God wants you to know that you should keep doing what you are doing, and he wants you to keep moving FORWARD.” Furthermore Bill said, “And he wants you to know that you should forget about your past, and just keep moving FORWARD!”

Somerset Hills

Chills radiated throughout my body as I felt the Holy Spirit alive within me. Here was a man that I hardly knew who was able to exclaim exactly what was on my mind. I had just located a guest speaker for the event and was trying to decide if Lonnie Berger was the right man for the job. Clearly, through Bill Holmes, the Lord told me Lonnie was the right man!

Forget about your past, and just keep moving FORWARD!

Lonnie Berger is the author of the “Every Man a Warrior” Bible study series. Photo courtesy Lonnie Berger.

This was a Holy Spirit moment that I will never forget.

God’s hand was all over this. With no resources to make this event happen, we turned to God and said, “If this is what you want Lord, make it happen.” And he did! With the help of the Endowment Team that provided the finances for the event, Kevin Liguori who provided worship, and the church staff, the Every Man a Warrior event was a smashing success! We had 94 people in attendance to hear Lonnie speak and present his vision of Men’s Ministry. Apparently, his vision rang true with a lot of people, because 41 men committed to completing the study in small groups. Since then, three more groups have formed bringing the total to 70. The small group studies will conclude in time for Father’s Day when we will have a ceremony in worship commemorating the men deciding to become better husbands, fathers, and men of God!

At the event, Pastor Don shared how the Men’s Ministry at LCPC can play a vital role in the future of the church and the Kingdom. We are poised and ready to make disciples who make disciples, and these disciples will be the next wave of disciple-makers reaching out to the Somerset Hills. Every Man a Warrior—Helping Men Succeed in Life!
