The Lady ChangMarjorie Clark
When Lady Chang first arrived in the City of Canton, She have nothing but the clothes she is wearing, the jewelries in her hands and her little son, Ko. Everything else were swept away by the great flood that came to them so suddenly.
Lady Chang had one thing more. Her own brave spirit. She know that she must now devote herself to the future with Ko.
She sold her gold and Jade ring and bought a small house large enough for the both of them, in a poor part of the city near the rubbish dumps.
Ko grew up to be a bright child and her mother tried to support him through weaving and embroidering cloth in the market.
Years passed and Lady Chang realized the child’s need of an ideal and nicer environment .So she sold their home near the rubbish dump and her gold and sapphire ring for a home near the market.
As Ko grew up,she realized Ko’s intelligence. So she once again sold her home in the market and her pearl and silver ring for a home near the university.
Soon Ko’ s teachers speak highly of him but unfortunately, too much intelligence made him vain and arrogant.
One time, Ko returned from school and saw a very intricate piece of cloth of gold, silver and scarlet. He thinks that it is the most beautiful piece of cloth he has seen in his entire life…
Days passed and Ko returned from school angrily. He harshly threw his books on the table and said he had already finished with schooling and do not want to pursue anymore...
Lady Chang tried her best to convince his son. However , Ko already made up his mind.
Lady Chang did not argue but instead ripped off her embroidery on the weaving loom. Ko was full of terror of what she has done.
Ko said that the weaving could have been the most beautiful piece of cloth but now nothing but a twisted rag on the floor. But Lady Chang replied, “My son could have been a great man too if only he finished his studies. Now he would be a little higher than peasants.
As Lady Chang started to cry, Ko was able to realize his mistake . He picked up his books and promised to finish his studies.
Times passed and Ko indeed became a wise and great man known all over China.
Let us take a view of Lady Chang who did not hesitate to destroy her most beautiful work to teach his son a valuable lesson of humility…
