ATII Building Professional Automotive Technicians

This presentation will show why I feel I’m the best person, having the insight on auto technology instruction programs at local community colleges, and why I’m capable to open and oversee ATII

The following information describes a newly designed automotive technology internship institute building professional auto technicians. ATII is designed to fill the lacking needs of the auto repair and auto related business community. Businesses in need of professionally trained auto technicians are auto manufacturers, dealerships, private auto repair garages, and transmission shops.

The design of ATII, Automotive Technology Internship Institute, will focus more emphasis on repetitive hands-on-learning, with less time devoted on textbook learning. Textbooks will be used only to reinforce projects conducted that day.

Business Information on creator of ATII

The creator has been a businessman for the past four decades, owning a grocery/deli store, then the 48 state, over the road trucking company.

For the past several years has been a writer, mostly RFP (request for final proposal) for local school districts, and upcoming charter schools

For several years wrote papers on how to solve business problems while in college.

Lead Counselor MCC-KC, feels I can take any broken business concept apart and make it workable, filling in the missing blanks.

While the creator of ATIIenrolled in automotive technology

While enrolled in MCC-KC/Longview’s Automotive Technology Program, fall 2011 through spring 2014. Being much older than all instructors and administrators. From the administrators to the janitors, each feeling I was a confidant, each felt comfortable talking about college politics, and instruction with the automotive technology basic instruction.

With attending eight semesters in automotive technology, and being a confidant, this make me an expert on how, why, way, and what was lacking in automotive technology instruction.

Problems encountered by creator of ATII in automotive technology

During eight semesters of automotive technology, attending two semesters in engine repair, personal engine remanufacturing was incomplete because of time restraints. The second engine repair semester was audited, suggested by the department head and an administrators, in order to complete my personal engine remanufacture job. Again time restraints caused remanufacturing being incomplete. A 30 hour job, took 30 weeks and unfinished.

From a real-time auto mechanics labor guide, a full rebuild/remanufacture, if in need, engine block bored line honed and hot tanked, heads completely rebuilt, etc. Depending if all parts are on hand, and all machine work is done, it should take 1-2 days to assemble and another day to install, that’s 24 hours to complete. Took me 30 weeks and incomplete engine rebuild/remanufacture job.

Problems in engine rebuilds at MCC-KC/Longview Campus

While I was enrolled in automotive engine repair class, each team is assigned a defective engine setting on top of a pallet, each team of five students then placed their engines on an engine stands. Each team’s assignment was to disassemble and reassemble the assigned engine. While engine was being reassembled; students were advised, each engine must maintain its defective status.

Engines were not allowed to be operational, not allowed to be started to see if running properly.

My knowledge of engines was recognized, I was the only student given permission and allowed to bring in my own car and remanufacture my engine. I was the first students ever allowed to remanufacture my own engine.

Page 8: Conjoined Companies Web Auto Repair Database (WARD) Automotive Technology Internship Institute (ATII) Copyright © 2015 # 1-2128102269 Created and Written:

Lack of instruction time

The amount of time MCC-KC’s hands-on instruction does not allow students to really comprehend engine repair or rebuild. Classroom time is 2 1/2 hours, then there is a 20 minute break. Next is the hands- on auto lab, the first 20 minutes of which is devoted to being assigned your tools and another 15 minutes to write up the work order. You work on the vehicle for 90 minutes, then another 20 minutes for tool check in.

The assignments are on one model of car only and the assigned chapter reading was never covered in auto lab.

Evaluation of Automotive Technology program

Once my eight semesters of automotive technology program was completed, I evaluated all the automotive colleges, community colleges, and tech schools. I either visited or called each director and realized all instruction was basic fundamental instruction.

I turned my report over to an acquaintance of mine, a lead counselor at a college, after he read my report and believed my concept fills in the missing pieces not only did his college miss, but the other automotive technology colleges and tech schools are missing as well.

ATII will not only offer basic auto repair instruction to give students a foundation to work on, but then in depth instruction, designed to be a full automotive technology internship institute turning out graduates qualified to immediately find a position as a professional auto technician.

Example: What’s involved in Honda apprenticeship program

Information gathered from Honda’s website, anyone wanting to become a factory-trained Honda technicians must first work at a Honda dealership as an apprentice performing simple repairs and basic maintenance, such as oil changes.

ATII understands If Honda choose to become a partner with ATII than ATII would offer Honda dealerships professional trained auto technicians to sign up as one of their apprentice.

ATII will ask Honda to give ATII professional trained auto technicians the opportunity to progress at a much faster pace and a chance to prove themselves.

Example: What’s involved in Ford’s apprenticeship program

Ford’s program is called: The Automotive Student Service Educational Training Program. Ford’s program differs from Honda; with Ford having more emphasis is on their apprentices earning their AA Degree.

Fords ad reads: Drive your passion and make it a career with the ASSET program. ASSET is the only program with a paid internship allowing you to earn while you learn. Students alternate for six to eight weeks in the classroom and six to eight weeks with their sponsoring Ford or Lincoln dealer over a two year period.

One of Ford ASSET Programs is located at Glendale Community College, Glendale, Arizona, students enrolled in Glendale automotive technology programs attend classes eight weeks, eight hours a day, same credit hours as a regular community college’s fifteen week semester, but longer hours. Then next eight weeks they work at a dealership. Rotating every eight weeks, college and dealership for two years then earn their AA degree.

Non-Official Board of Directorsand Institute’s Chancellor

ATII is a family own business with time and energy invested. At this time it is unclear if ATII will be a nonprofit or profit company, it depends on how to keep the concept in tact without loosing control, stopping someone else from changing the creators concept, but will take advice and suggestions from others. It’s proven with companies such as Walmart and Wendy’s, etc. when the creator dies or retires, things move away from the original concept, this cannot happen with ATII’s concept. ATII start-ups will choose not to set up an official board of directors until

after ATII starts growing quickly or get some outside investment and the decision is made, profit or nonprofit.

ATII opt for a less formal advisory board, not have an official role overseeing finances or making business decisions, but can still help guide the company.  Those individuals will provide some great advice to the CEO and founder, individuals to help improve ATII workplace environments.

Chancellor: chief executive officer of ATII Institute. The chancellor will carry out the Non-Official Board of Directors decisions and advise the Board . The chancellor will make the big decisions not having to be made by the Board of Directors.

ATII Part 1, 2, of the Five Programs

ATII will offer the following programs1. Program 1-Engine Rebuild Remanufacture hands-on-instruction Most engine rebuilders do not rebuild cylinder heads because this part of the engine

undertakes the most extreme high temperature damage and must be machined. Customers pick up only the rebuilt engine block minus the cylinder heads. The customer must send their cylinder heads to a machine shop to be machined, then have to install the cylinder heads themselves or have a mechanic install the head on the newly rebuilt engine.

The difference between ATII and other engine rebuilders is that ATII auto machine shop will remanufacture engine blocks and cylinder heads on the same assembly line and at the same time.

(NOTE: Aluminum cylinder heads MUST be resurfaced. After removing aluminum cylinder heads from an engine the heads warp. If cylinder heads are not resurfaced, the heads will not seat tightly and this will cause the cylinder head gaskets to blow or leak oil, just placing your original cylinder heads on a new engine block is a dangerous situation). The program at ATII will instruct the proper engine cylinder head remanufacturing

procedure. 2. Program 2-Precision Machine Shop hands-on-instruction Engine rebuilds and/or remanufacturing must be included with precision machine shop

instruction as both go hand in hand. Engine blocks, cylinder heads, crankshafts and camshafts must be remanufactured before any engine can be reassembled. Engine reconditioning must be at ATII’s location so the engine can be reassembled in the same week.

Part 3, 4, 5, of the Six Programs

3. Program 2-Precision Machine Shop hands-on-instruction

Engine rebuilds and/or remanufacturing must be included with precision machine shop instruction as both go hand in hand. Engine blocks, cylinder heads, crankshafts and camshafts must be remanufactured before any engine can be reassembled. Engine reconditioning must be at ATII’s location so the engine can be reassembled in the same week.

4. Program 3-Transmission Rebuild Remanufacture and hands-on-instruction

5. Program 4 - ATII Auto Body and Collision Repair and Auto Restoration hands-on-instruction

Part 6 of the Six Programs

6. ATII Auto Body/Collision Repair and Auto Restoration Program graduate student would be beneficial to any auto manufacturer's dealerships offering auto body repair.

ATII auto body/collision and restoration program will run as the other programs, 12 months duration.

ATII’s students will be instructed on replacing damaged or rusted metal auto body parts or components with metal, no plastic replacements, plastic only goes on autos with plastic body parts or components

Students having work experience through Auto body repair/collision and restoration program making them capable of not only auto body/collision repair, but auto restoration, designed for vehicle enthusiasts wanting to completely restore their vintage automobiles, top of the roof to the bottom of their tires. Removal of the entire body off the frame

A complete restoration includes not only repair of the parts that can be seen, the body, trim, chrome, wheels, and the passenger compartment, but also the components that are not necessarily visible or otherwise evident. This will include the engine and engine compartment, trunk, frame, driveline, and all ancillary parts like the brakes, accessories, engine cooling system, electrical system, etc.

Difference Between Auto Manufacturers Apprentice Programs, College and Tech/Trade

School Automotive Technology Programs vs. ATII

Colleges, community college spend a full semester on each part of the car, brakes, front suspension, electrical, etc. gaining only basic hands-on knowledge of auto repair, but only on one made and model car. Class sizes are to large, not enough personal time with each student.

The same applies with tech/trade school, basic instruction.

Page 22: Conjoined Companies Web Auto Repair Database (WARD) Automotive Technology Internship Institute (ATII) Copyright © 2015 # 1-2128102269 Created and Written:

Difference Between Auto Manufacturers Apprentice Programs, College and Tech/Trade School Automotive

Technology Programs vs. ATII

With auto manufacturers apprentices working with dealerships auto technicians, the possibility of apprentices, after a diagnoses being completed showing a damaged cylinder head, burnt valve or blown head gasket, the apprentice will help the technician pull the common chambers (fuel intake and exhaust), remove damaged cylinder head or heads, replace with new cylinder heads. Change timing belts, oil pump, water pumps, but not much more.

When doing those disassembles, the technicians will place in chronological order the removed components. Those components could only take up space on top any work bench, not many components.

If engine has a bad rod, then the technician would pull common chamber, left and right cylinder heads, then pull the engine block, replace with new or reconditioned engine block, then replace the removed parts.

Page 23: Conjoined Companies Web Auto Repair Database (WARD) Automotive Technology Internship Institute (ATII) Copyright © 2015 # 1-2128102269 Created and Written:

Difference Between Auto Manufacturers Apprentice Programs, College and Tech/Trade School Automotive

Technology Programs vs. ATII

Big Differences: Even though ATII interns will remanufacturer engines and transmissions on each car they work on, they will be trained as any auto manufacturers dealership apprentice.

Interns will use a much larger work bench because it must house every moving and non-moving part of an engine placed in chronological order as removed.

After engine diagnoses has been completed, they too will pull electrical harness, fuel rail, common chamber, and both cylinder heads from the engine block. Then pull engine block then transmission.

After ATII interns remanufacturer engine and cylinder heads, interns will reinstall transmission back into car, then reinstall engine block back into car and connect to transmission and on motor mounts

Interns will then do as dealership technicians, reinstall cylinder heads, electrical harness, common chamber, and reconnect all electrical components and other components.

Page 24: Conjoined Companies Web Auto Repair Database (WARD) Automotive Technology Internship Institute (ATII) Copyright © 2015 # 1-2128102269 Created and Written:

Reason for engine components being placed in a chronological order?

If engine components are placed, as they are removed, in chronological order, anyone can then reassemble the engine if for some reason the original auto technician is not available, the car owner does not have to wait until the auto technician is back at work, any auto technical can step in and see where the work stopped by just looking at the work bench, just start placing components back on the engine.

ATII Internship Institute Example locations

Closed down dealership or vacant warehouse

ATII would like a building and property similar to a closed down dealership because it would be a perfect facility for ATII Automotive Technology Internship Institute.

Such a location would give ATII room to expand. The location could be a vacant warehouse large enough to design service bays, office, classrooms, and secure tool room. It would also provide enough room to add the precision machine shop.

The third-year a section of the property might have

additional space to house the body collision shop and auto restoration shop

Statistics: Auto Repair and Auto Machine Shops

• There is a need for professional technicians, not just for dealerships preforming warranty work, but other auto related businesses, such as auto repair garages and auto machine shops. Several auto related businesses, such as insurance companies, are also in need of professionally trained auto technicians.

• In the United States the estimated nearly 175,000 businesses classified as mechanical automotive repair shops are in need of professional auto technicians, and those auto repair garages work on every automaker’s vehicles, all years, makes, and models. Following next page shows the auto related businesses

need for professionally trained workers

Students Gaining Knowledge

ATII’s internship students will be working on different years, makes, and models of cars and trucks each week, totaling 52 vehicles in each program; no repeats.

The advantage for ATII’s students is they will gain experience on different components that make up the vehicle mechanically. Other schools or colleges take several semesters to cover what ATII will do weekly

Page 29: Conjoined Companies Web Auto Repair Database (WARD) Automotive Technology Internship Institute (ATII) Copyright © 2015 # 1-2128102269 Created and Written:

Current Instruction

As with any automotive technology institute, college, or tech school, there are textbooks requiring extensive reading in the classroom, much of which is not reinforced by hands-on application as it is not necessary for the day’s training. If the reading is not reinforced in the auto-lab, this can be wasted study time.

Students going through automaker certification programs will be instructed on each individual automaker’s standards and specifications by using automakers’ service shop manuals. There will be textbook reading and studying, but only on materials covered in the lab that day.

Students wanting to open their own business or work on their own cars will be trained the same as students wanting to work at a dealership, all students will go through the same program.

Page 30: Conjoined Companies Web Auto Repair Database (WARD) Automotive Technology Internship Institute (ATII) Copyright © 2015 # 1-2128102269 Created and Written:

Conclusion on Students Instruction

Before any process of engine rebuilds or remanufacturing begins, students will diagnose each engine, run compression test on each cylinder, etc. making any needed repairs insuring engine runs with manufacturer’s operations standards.

Cylinder heads, right and left will be removed and reinstalled while engine is still in engine compartment before removal of engine from vehicle

Oil pump, water pump, timing belt, removed and then reinstalled back on engine while still in engine compartment before removal of engine from vehicle

Reason: Students need this knowledge of working on engines while still in vehicle in order to comply with dealerships requirements, this make them ready if tested then hired at a manufacturers dealership

Page 31: Conjoined Companies Web Auto Repair Database (WARD) Automotive Technology Internship Institute (ATII) Copyright © 2015 # 1-2128102269 Created and Written:

Conclusion: Endorsements

By endorsing ATII, auto manufacturers and local assembly plants can help the entire auto community in Missouri and Kansas.

At this time potential funders would like ATII to gather endorsements from local assembly plants and auto manufactures and others.

Those endorsements could help locate funding for ATII’s program.
