In the month of November, on the last Thursday, we celebrate Thanksgiving with much feasting and football. By late afternoon, many of us are lured into sleep because we ate too much food and participated in too little activity. For many people the only activity after the Thanksgiving meal will be pushing buttons on the remote.

While it is great that we get to pause and give thanks to God for all that he has given to us, the gospel verse at the top of this article sounds an alarm which should wake us from our slumber. Complacency has no place in our Christian life. The gospels inform us that at all times and all places we are to be about our Lord’s business.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving this year let us keep in mind that Advent is right around the corner and that we are about to enter a Season of Preparation. And what is it that we are preparing ourselves for? 1. We prepare our homes and our hearts for Jesus’ coming at Christmas. 2. We prepare ourselves for Christ’s coming into our lives today. 3. We prepare ourselves for Christ’s coming again at the fullness of time.

On November 17, 2013 Emanuel’s Lutheran Church will host “Time & Talent Sunday.” On that day the Church Council and Church Committees will have booths highlighting upcoming ministry opportunities and descriptions of ways you can be a part of our ministry together as we enter the Season of Preparation. We will have one worship service at 9am and Sunday School and Adult Christian Education at 10:15.

Senior Service and Community Meal

This service, open to the entire community, is held every fourth Thursday at Emanuel's Lutheran Church and is designed with the senior adult in mind. Worshipers sit during the brief communion service, and at the conclusion of the service a catered lunch is served to everyone present. The service is held in the Women's Ministry Room which is located on the north side of the building easily accessible to both parking and the elevator through the Mountain Street Entrance.

to our monthly service (and other daily activities at the church!) is available through Alamo Regional Transit. Our community is so fortunate to have this service! Did you know that the difference between sedentary seniors and active, healthy seniors was as simple as a free bus pass? A new study in the UK showed that people over 60 with a bus pass were not only more likely to walk regularly, but also more likely to undertake “active travel”—defined as walking, cycling, or using public transport. In a city environment with ample public transit options, bus pass programs like these could be crucial to helping older adults get regular exercise.

Most recently, our local Alamo Regional Transit Service has enabled members of Argent Court to attend our monthly service. The cost of the fare is modest, it is only two dollars each way for a total of four dollars round trip. Thanks to the generosity of our Ladies Aid, we are able to subsidize the cost of the bus fare for our attendees. To ensure this service continues, we will gratefully accept donations.

The bus is wheelchair accessible, and I have found that the bus drivers are courteous and more than happy to assist you and see you to the door. This service is available Monday ‐ Friday 7 am to 6 pm and can get you to the church and other destinations around town. Trips to medical facilities in San Antonio can also be scheduled at a slightly higher fare. If you wish to utilize the service, or just need more info, please call (830‐379‐5046 ext. 205) or email me (donna.zipp@emanuels‐seguin.org) and I will gladly help you get started. We are also Looking for members willing to volunteer their time as escorts to ride with members.

Make plans now to attend our Christmas Senior Service and Community Lunch which will be held on December 12th. Call if you need a ride! There will be no service in November due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Advent Candlelight Prayers Around the Cross

The beautiful new floor in the Women’s Ministry Room welcomed 19 Ladies Aid members and Pastor Paul to their October 2, 2013 meeting. Thirty‐seven visits were made to homebound and shut‐ins in September.

The president welcomed all. The opening prayer was followed by the hymn “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.”

Pastor Paul gave the bible study on another biblical woman – Deborah – A Determined Leader.

Vice President Beulah Reiley recognized the October birthday ladies and anniversary couples. “A Glad and Happy Birthday: and the hymn “Jesus Loves Me” was sung in their honor.

Secretary Beverly Funderburg read the minutes of the September meeting which were approved as read. This was followed by the treasurer’s report by Treasurer Judy Campbell. Judy also advised the ladies that the group had received a monetary memorial in honor of Donna Grimm Due.

Standing committee reports were made including Crafts by Dorothy Schievelbein; Quilts by Betty Fischer, who also had Raffle tickets for the King size quilt. A program for the Christmas Luncheon is being arranged by Vice President Beulah, and in the absence of Lorene Schraub, there was no report on Handwork. Arlene Westphal sent 5 birthday cards in September, and no cheer cards were sent. Ann gave a list of those requesting prayers from the Prayer Chain Velma Huebner reported that the hostesses for the meeting were Maxine Hollub and Judy Stollewerk. The November hostesses will be Evelyn Neumann and Barbara Lampmann.

The president asked everyone to sign up for hostess choice for 2014 and to make any corrections necessary on addresses or telephone numbers so the information can be turned in for the 2014 yearbook.

Judy Campbell reported that a Bingo Party will be held at Nesbit Nursing Home and volunteers can sign up.

The total bill for the installation of the floor in the WMR and entrance was $10,364.22. Thanks to the “Hot Dogs” from TLU who helped tear out the old carpet and prepare the floor, the labor cost of $600 was deducted leaving and balance of $9,764.22. This amount was paid by memorial donations.

THANK YOU TO THE TLU “HOT DOGS” AND FOR THE ERNA BELL LAUGHLIN FAMILY AND MYRTLE HUEBINGER.

The ladies Aid will check on a plaque to be hung in the WMR acknowledging these memorial donations.

The ladies agreed to start baking coffee cakes on Monday, October 7th and continue for 4 more Mondays – October 14, 21, 28 and November 4. The coffee cakes are for sale on these Mondays and can be picked up between 12 noon and 2:30.

The group reviewed the food prices for the bazaar and agreed there would be no changes except for a slice of pie which would increase to $1.50. There was also a review of the Bazaar Committees.

A contribution of $50.00 was made to Guadalupe Valley Christian Counseling Center for their fundraiser on Sunday, October 20th.

After reminding the ladies of several activities at the church, and tanking Pastor Paul, Frances Vinyard and the hostesses, the meeting adjourned with the Lord’s Prayer and singing “God Be With You.”

Women of the ELCA does not receive any funding from the church at large and is self funded from contributions of its members to carry out its programs and services. Church Women of United welcomes Christian women of all faiths to their celebration on November 1 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 710 N. Austin St.

Sunday, December 1 will be the date for collecting items for “Gifts for the King”. All church members are invited to participate. This annual project supports the clients of the “Rainbow Room” at the Department of Protective Services with items needed in emergency care of children who have been temporarily removed from the custody of their parents. Suggested items include underwear, diapers, socks, gift cards, etc. A more comprehensive list will appear in the church bulletins. Boxes for the donations are provided at the entrances of the nave for your convenience. Monetary donations should be left with the church office. Our Lutheran World Relief Monday Morning Crafty Ones continue to need lots of donations of fabrics. Production is fastest with large pieces like sheets, curtains, spreads, pillow cases, mattress pads, tablecloths, etc. We can also make usable squares of fabric from some clothing and smaller pieces. Each 60x80 quilt requires 3 layers of fabric. Stained? No problem. It can be part of the inner lining. Ripped? No problem. We have a way to use it. Thread? Yes!!! We use a lot! We always welcome you – to spend one Monday morning or many Monday mornings with us‐ to tack, piece, sew, or cut – to have a cup of coffee or tea. 9 – noon, Emanuel’s third floor.

A YOUTHFUL APPROACH

REFORMATION 365 SERVICE: Reformation 365 served dinner and worshipped with college students at Texas State University’s Christ Chapel on Oct. 13, 2013. 11 Youth, 3 Adults, & 2 Children attended. The baked potato bar was a huge success and our youth really enjoyed worship.

HELP NEEDED! CHRISTMAS CARDS - We are in need of old Christmas Cards that the youth can recycle into new handmade Christmas Cards to be given out with the Holiday Meals to Shut-Ins. Any Christmas Cards can be brought by the church office before Nov.17, 2013 PROGRESSIVE MEAL HOSTS – Reformation 365 is in need of hosts for our Annual Holiday Progressive Meal which will be held on Dec. 15, 2013. We are in need of a Salad or Soup Location and a Dessert Location. If you would be willing to welcome us into your home please contact Ariel Williams!

Council Highlights November 2013 October 2013 Council Highlights

1. Motion made by Deb to house RSVP in the space across from the main office and speak at a later date about remuneration. Steve moved to accept the motion; seconded by Gene.

2. Finance Committee Update: Susan said the Investment Committee met on October 8th with Kathy Nossaman, a local Edward Jones representative, attending to discuss the Portfolio she put together for Emanuel’s endowment funds. The fund will be actively managed and has been designed to meet Emanuel’s investment goals per the Investment Policy. The Investment Committee approved moving forward with the placing Emanuel’s endowment funds with Kathy Nossaman

3. 2014 Budget: Council voted to hold a budget workshop on November 2, 2013 from 9:00 am to noon.

4. Steve made a motion to give Bonnie Cheatham a $500 bonus in the month of December. Susan seconded the motion and all voted in favor.

5. Other items discussed by Deb: 1) Emanuel’s will host a booth at the Sebastopol House as part of Seguin’s Heritage Pecan Fest honoring the Buffalo Solider on Saturday, October 26, 2013. Pastor Schuller is asking local churches to participate in this event and sell one item. All proceeds are to go back to each church. The hours will be 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Ariel has volunteered put up a booth. Assistance will be needed to man the booth throughout the day. Deb will ask Ladies Aid if they would like to sell their coffee cakes at the event. 2) The Polka Service and Sausage Supper on October 27, 2013 has been organized. The music will be provided by Don Gerhardt and Teatro de Artes de Juan Seguin. All proceeds to benefit the Christian Cupboard.


RSVP….The Retired Seniors Volunteer Program has moved into Emanuel’s and will be housed in the two classrooms across the

hall from the church offices. Their office hours will be Monday through Friday, 8:00am-5pm.

Please stop by and welcome them to Emanuel’s. We feel privileged to be able to assist this important community ministry in

finding a new home.

‘TIS THE SEASON AT EMANUEL’S

Emanuel’s First Communion: Emanuel’s will celebrate First Communion at the 10:30 worship service on Sunday, January 26. First Communion instructions are scheduled for Sunday, January 12 and January 19, immediately following the 10:30 am worship services and will last approximately one hour. The classes are open to any child who is ready to make the commitment. There is no specific age to begin…please use your best judgment. The classes will meet with Pastor Paul in the Women’s Ministry Room. Parents are asked to attend both sessions. For questions or to enroll your child, please contact the church office.


You are invited to a 4‐week journey hosted by the Assembly Class which will explore our human yearnings for love, freedom, redemption, justice and forgiveness. We will view the 2012 movie, Les Miserables, based on an 1862 French novel by Victor Hugo, directed by British filmmaker Tom Hooper, who won the best director Oscar for The King’s Speech, and we will engage in discussion invoking Lutheran concepts of law and gospel, sinner and saint, justification by faith and the dynamics of sanctification which the Lutheran reformers called the new obedience. The class will be held four consecutive Sundays on October 27th, November 3rd, November 10th and November 17th. We will meet with the Covenant Class in the family life center on the 3rd floor. All are welcome.

Preparations are under way for the 2013 Salvation Army Kettle Campaign. Funds collected in the campaign help approximately 3,000 of the less fortunate in Seguin and Guadalupe County annually. Emanuel’s has been asked for volunteers again this year. The Emanuel’s team will ring the bells at the grocery entrance to Wal-Mart on Friday, November 29, from 9 am - 5 pm in 2 hour shifts. Emanuel’s Youth will ring the bells from 5 - 9 pm. This is an intergenerational opportunity to serve others that will give each volunteer joy and satisfaction as part of the Christmas Spirit. On Saturday, December 7, 2013, members of Emanuel’s Lutheran Church will deliver delicious hot turkey dinners to our members and friends who would appreciate a hot meal. Tickets $1 each or 6 for $5 The quilters of the Emanuel’s Ladies Aid are raffling a king‐sized, hand‐quilted, grandmothers flower garden quilt for their annual bazaar. The drawing for the winner will take place at their annual Christmas luncheon on Wednesday, December 4. Tickets are available from any of the quilting ladies or the church office.

Singles Group Strengthening Our Faith Through Food, Fun & Fellowship

Strengthening our Faith through Food, Fun & Fellowship (FFF) is a support group of people who are widowed, divorced, separated, or single. FFF meets once a month for Sunday lunch at either a restaurant, the Family Life Room, or Women’s Ministry Room at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, or in one of the members' homes. FFF's purpose is to support each other, pray for each other, and just have a good time being together once each month.” Next lunch meeting is Sunday November 24th at Gene Vivroux’s home. Please bring your favorite dish to share. December 15th we will at Donna Simmons home for a Christmas open house between 2:00 pm and 4:30pm.
