I can’t think of planning and cooking healthy. So I grab anything available which is most often high carb fi nger foods. How can I change?” Answer; Have fresh fruits and vegetables washed and cut up in the refrigerator where they will be handy. These answers are only part of the answers given. There were a lot of good answers and I think we learned from the

Addison Central School District

A Message from the Office of Curriculum and Instruction

Dear Families and Community Members,

As the 2014-2015 school year comes to a close, Addison Central School District would like to thank you for your support during

this past school year. Additionally, we want to thank our staff for their efforts in using student data to make many positive chang-

es. We would like to reflect again on our school year and share some of our accomplishments with you. The district’s school year

started with staff examining data from the 2013-2014 school year. Our staff concluded that our students were not getting enough

experience incorporating text based evidence into their writing.

With this data, a team of staff members came up with our writing goal which embedded ELA Shift 5: Writing from Sources: em-

phasizes use of evidence from sources to inform or make an argument and ELA Shift 6: Academic Vocabulary: students constantly

building the transferable vocabulary they need to access grade level complex text. The goal of 2014-2015 was: Students will write

daily using text-based evidence.

During enrichment days and conference days, our Thoughtful Education

Leaders coached our faculty and led professional development sessions to

support and achieve our district goal. The collaboration and dedication of

our leaders, staff, faculty, and students has been outstanding. As a district

we were able to unify and achieve the following during the 2014-2015

school year:

A Unified Lesson Plan Template-The template was implement-

ed to support the needs of all students that also increases com-

munication to all staff members about students.

The 9-Step Writing Process-This writing process supports the

NYS CCLS and supports teachers and students to use a com-

mon language in grades PK-12.

A Writing Calendar-This calendar was developed to support

students writing in their content areas over the course of the school year.

Rubrics- CIR Rubric was introduced to support higher level instructional plans.

Academic Vocabulary-This was introduced so that common language was understood by all students.

Instructional and Teaching Strategies- These were introduced in reading, math, notes, assignments, testing, and writing.

Formative Assessments from the CCLS were also shared and implemented in daily lessons.

Interdisciplinary Lesson- Teachers planned with teachers of other content areas to create cross-curricular lessons for stu-

dents.

End of the year celebration- The culminating activity by all teachers PK-12 where teachers shared student work at each

grade level.

We are excited about these positive changes made on behalf of our students and are looking forward to the 2015-2016 school year.

OUR DISTRICT GOAL FOR 2014-2015: STUDENTS WILL WRITE DAILY USING TEXT-BASED EVIDENCE.

She is survived by one son: Dana (Tami) Slocum of Kalamazoo, MI; two daughters: Denise (Robert) Wilcox of Ogden, UT, and D’Ann (Kevin) Grell of Hickory, NC; 8 grandchildren; 5 great- grandchildren; sister: Lorraine Joyce of Andover, NY; brother: Paul (Carol) Hyland of Andover, NY; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by daughter, Debra Slocum in 1972; sisters: Josephine Butler, Corinne Atwell, and brother, James Hyland. Family and friends are invited to call at Carpenter-Flint Funeral Home, 10 Wall St. in Addison on Friday, June 26, 2015 from 10:00am to 12:30pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Catherine’s Church, 51 Maple St. in Addison on Friday, June 26th at 1:00PM with Father Patrick Connor officiating. Dear Editor I am writing to congratulate the ACS girl’s softball team for winning the highest honor in NY State softball, The State Championship. I want everyone to understand what an honor this is for our girls and the dedication they have demonstrated over the last 8-10 years. Yes some of these girls have been playing softball for 10 years. Over the last 8 years I have had the honor and privilege, as both a spectator and assistant coach, to watch these girls develop into a top of the line, quality, softball team. I was there when the girls were so young that it was a miracle if a softball rolled into the outfield, let alone was hit over the outfield fence. I have seen a Cinderella 14U team composed of many of these girls win 5 tournaments in 1 year. I have seen teams comprised of these same girls win 3 Corning Cinderella World Series titles. These girls have had one of the best winning records in NY State over the last few years. Winning the New York State Championship Title is the crowning jewel in this long list of accomplishments. These girls have never failed to amaze and impress me. After all this time my wife and I look at them as our adopted daughters and we are so proud of them. I would like to point out to the younger girls on the team and the even younger Cinderella girls that love softball, this is a very tough act to follow for 2 reasons 1) Very few teams get this honor and even fewer get a repeat of what the movies call a “Perfect Storm”. 2) This does not happen overnight. It takes years of hard work, of working together, of supporting each other as a team. (This is why a youth program is so important in Addison in the future for all the sports). Part of being a great champion is learning how to handle a loss and as you can see by our record we tasted defeat 2 times this year but the girls perservered and proved that they are Great Champions. There are many coaches and assistant coaches that have helped my daughter Ann to remain interested and become a good softball player and I would like to thank as many as I can remember: Mark Woodhouse, Randy Loscig, Scott Chilson, Shawn Jones, Leslie Watkins, Kellie Bump, Cathy & Kevin Lovell, Lea Yuhas, Kelly Madden, Gary Hankinson, Brian LeBaron, Derek Burrell, Shannon Fleishman, Kim Driskell, Megan Putnam and Oakley Hayes. Many thanks to each of you for all the time and work that you put into Ann and her teammates. It has surely paid great dividends to them and ACS.

Dear EditorHonoring All Achievements

It has been a great year. Graduation has now passed for this year, and our students are on to their next chal-lenges in September. The softball team has been successful in attaining state-level championships, which was properly covered by the media; but have we forgotten the achievements of our high school band, led by Katrina Vroman? These students and their teacher deserve recognition for all their hard work and long hours of practicing. 1. This spring, Mrs. Vroman took 63 band students to Cedar Point, Ohio, where they competed against much larger and better-funded schools from around the country. There, Junior High received fi rst place; Seniors received third place in the parade. 2. At the Dairy Festival in Bath, the band got $200 for participation. 3. At Nunda, the band was awarded 2nd place and $200. 4. At the Colonial Parade in Corning the majorettes placed fi rst and received $50 and a trophy. The band received second place and a trophy plus $275. 5. At Montour Falls, NY, the band was awarded $500 for participation, and Senior High was awarded a bronze medal on level 4 in music as fi rst-time participants. And please, let’s not forget the spring concert, orga-nized and led by Mr. Keenley, who has the ability to bring the very best out of the chorus students. The arts are an academic subject, which is graded, while sports is an ungraded, extra curricular activity. These students are all heroes in my eyes and I am

Summertime Summertime means putting away the heavier clothing and looking forward to short sleeves and warmer weather. Some of the things that I enjoy about summer are the longer hours of daylight, washing my car in the backyard, cutting the grass, talking to neighbors and just being outside enjoying the pleasant weather. The summer months can be sweltering at times, but all and all, it usually is a pleasant time of the year. As one gets older, it seems that the summers get shorter. They say that time is relative, and the older we get, the faster time appears to go. Keep-ing this in mind, we should plan to enjoy all that the summer has to offer: go on some picnics; plan a few trips; go swimming; play some golf or tennis. The Bible tells us that everything that God has created is good; nothing is to be rejected, and everything is to be received witha prayer of thanks (1Timothy 4:4). We thank God for summer, and for all the seasons of the year, and we ask His blessing and peace on all of us.

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, always give thanks for everything to God the Father.Good News Bible Ephesians 5:20
