Class of 2015 FundraiserWondering what to do with those bags

of recyclable cans and bottles (soda, water, and adult beverages)? Do you have a family member or neighbor graduating this year? The Senior Class of 2015 has a perfect solu-tion to clean out your recyclables and help us raise funds for our Senior Trip: take your recyclables to the Wellsville Redemption Center and tell them you want the proceeds to be credited to the Scio Class of 2015 ac-count. It's a great way to keep those bottles and cans from accumulating and to help the Senior Class raise money for their trip!

Please join us in welcoming Miss Me-gan Kennedy (above) to our district. She will be joining us as our school psycholo-gist working with PreK-12 students in our building. Miss Kennedy is originally from a small town in the Adirondacks, but slowly moved to Western New York by way of col-lege beginning at Ithaca College after which she transferred to Alfred University for graduate school. Currently, she is working on her doctoral dissertation, which evalu-ated a math program used by Head Start. Miss Kennedy resides in Wellsville with her

fiancé, Mitch, and their three-year-old lab, Izzy. Mitch and Megan will be married in October. She is very excited to meet every-one in the Scio Community and work with our students! When you see Miss Kennedy in the hallway, please give her a HUGE Scio Central School welcome!

We would like to welcome back Ms. Candice McCarthy (below). She will be joining us as a teaching assistant. Ms. Mc-Carthy is originally from Wellsville. She graduated from Sam Houston State Uni-versity in Huntsville, TX. After graduating, she began her teaching career in Texas, but eventually returned to Wellsville, where she now resides. In her spare time, she enjoys walking, visiting with friends and family, and shopping. She looks forward to working in our district again!

Dress Code RemindersAs we begin another exciting year at

Scio Central, we would like to remind stu-dents about our dress code. As a reminder, ladies are to refrain from wearing spaghetti strap tank tops, midriff exposing tops, revealing shirts, and shorts/skorts/skirts are to reach at least midway down the thigh. Students are to refrain from wearing shirts that advertise any type of controlled substance such as alcohol and/or tobacco products or extol violence. Jeans and shorts MUST be worn above the underwear at all times and if necessary with a belt. Pajamas

are not to be worn to school except under special circumstances with approval from administration.

Any clothing found to be inappropriate, obscene, or in bad taste will result in a con-sequence according to the school handbook and code of conduct. We appreciate your cooperation.

About Special Education . . .The Board of Education of every school

district must locate and identify all children with disabilities from birth to 21 years of age who reside in the school district.

If you live in the Scio school district and you suspect that your son or daughter (birth through 21 years of age) may have a disability that negatively impacts his or her education, please contact Leslie C. Buckley, CSE/CPSE/504 Chairperson at 593-5510, ext. 1140 to learn more about the special education referral process. We offer special education services and related services for all children with disabilities who are homeless or wards of the State, and children with dis-abilities attending private school, regardless of severity of their disability.

Section 504 Annual Notice

In accordance with the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 commonly known as § 504, the

Scio School District hereby notifies disabled children and their parents of the School District duty under the Regulations to § 504.

The Scio School District shall provide a free appropriate public education to each qualified disabled child who resides in the School District regardless of the nature or severity of the disability. The Scio School District shall educate each qualified disabled child with children who are not disabled to the maximum extent appropriate to the needs of the disabled child, and shall also ensure that disabled children participate with non-disabled children in nonacademic and extra-curricular activities to the maximum extent appropriate. A disabled child shall be afforded an equal opportunity for participation in such services and activities.

The Scio School District shall provide disabled children an equal opportunity for participation in physical education courses, interscholastic, club or intramural athletics.

The Scio School District shall conduct pre-placement evaluations, and shall establish standards and procedures consistent with § 104.35 for the evaluation and placement of children who need or are believed to need special education or related services. Periodic reevaluation shall be conducted of children who have been provided special education or related services.

Placement decisions shall draw upon information from a variety of sources and shall be made by a group of persons knowl-edgeable about the child, the meaning of the evaluation data, and the placement options. The Scio School District shall establish and implement a system of procedural safeguards that includes notice, an opportunity for the parent to examine relevant records, an impartial hearing with the opportunity for participation by the parent and representation by counsel, and a review procedure.

At Scio Central School, we try to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of all our students. We have established procedures that will assist us in this goal. We encourage you to review the following information and discuss each item with your child. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact the Transportation Department at 585-593-0987.

Board of Education Policy states that Pre-K through grade three students will not be dropped off unless the bus driver is certain there is someone there for the student. We need you to do one of the following:

Stand in a window or doorway Come outside Stand in the driveway

Please wave to the driver so that he or she can see you. If it seems that no one is available, the student will be brought back to

the school and their emergency contact person will be called to pick the student up. It is our wish to avoid any inconvenience for parents.

Pre-K students need to be escorted to and from the bus stops. Pre-K students will also sit toward the front of the bus.

Please remember there is a 5-mph speed limit on school grounds. There is always the possibility of students in the driveway or parking lot.

Make sure your child/children are at the bus stop at the appropriate time!

There will be three scheduled bus safety drills for all students during the school year.

Please remind your child/children of our school bus safety rules:

Stay seated – facing forward No eating or drinking Talk quietly using appropriate

language No hitting, kicking or bullying No glass containers or aerosol

spray cans of any type!We thank you, in advance, for all of your

assistance in making our school the safest it can be for the children. If we can help to clarify any items in this letter, please do not hesitate to call us.

Transportation Information

According to the Commissioner of Education, a school district is NOT responsible to transport children to more than one location (even when that student’s parents are divorced). There is no statutory or regulatory requirement that a district transport a student to different places on different days of the week. Each student may have only ONE designated pick-up point and ONE designated drop-off point. The morning pick up and afternoon drop off may be different, but they must be consis-tently the same locations DAILY. Also, we will NOT transport students to other students’ homes. In the event of an EMERGENCY situation where your child needs to be transported to a different location, please send a written note in the morning, if at all possible. If an EMERGENCY takes place during the day, please call the Main Office at 585-593-5510 prior to 2:30 p.m., so we can advise your child's teacher and the bus garage.

Dear Parents,

New York State has released the major-ity of the English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics modules. Modules are resources that districts have been allowed to either (1) use in their entirety, (2) adapt to best meet the needs of the students, or (3) not use at all. We at Scio Central School have chosen to allow teachers to adapt/edit the module materi-als to be sure that the curriculum being taught is rigorous and aligned to the New York State Standards. Throughout the past school year, math teachers in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade adapted the modules. Many of you have seen the difference in the instruction that students were receiving and the work that they were completing both in school and at home.

During the 2014-2015 school year, teachers will be doing the same with the ELA modules. Each module is intended to last one quarter of the year with an intense focus on reading, writing, listening, and speaking in response to high-quality texts. The modules will sequence and scaffold content aligned to the Common Core State Standards and the Partnership for Assessment of Readi-ness for College and Career (PARCC) Frameworks.

The individual modules may contain several units as a set of sequenced, coherent progressions of learning experiences that build knowledge and understanding of major concepts. They will also include daily lesson plans, guiding questions, recommended texts, scaffolding strategies, examples of profi-cient student work, and other classroom resources.

These modules are comprised of authen-tic reading materials which include pub-lished works typically encountered by students in daily life, such as in maga-zines, books, or newspapers. The use of authentic reading material may mean some material is emotionally charged or may use language outside of a student’s particular cultural experience.

There are six major shifts in the ELA Common Core State Standards:1) Read as much non-fiction as fiction

2) Learn about the world by reading3) Read more challenging material4) Talk about reading using “evidence”5) Write about texts using “evidence”6) Know more vocabulary words

BELOW you will find additional infor-mation about the ELA Standards, the six shifts in ELA/Literacy, the expectations of students, and some ideas of how par-ents can help their children at home.

Please feel free to contact me at 585-596-6318 if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Cristy McKinleyDirector of Curriculum and Instruction

We MAY share your eligibility information with education, health, and nutrition programs to help them evaluate, fund, or determine benefits for their programs, auditors for program reviews, and law enforcement officials to help them look into violations of program rules.

DISCRIMINATION COMPLAINTSThe U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) prohibits discrimination against its customers, employees, and applicants for employment on the bases of race, color, national origin, age, disability, sex, gender identity, religion, reprisal, and where applicable, political beliefs, marital status, familial or parental status, sexual orientation, or all or part of an individual's income is derived from any public assistance program, or protected genetic information in employment or in any program or activity conducted or funded by the Department. (Not all prohibited bases will apply to all programs and/or employment activities.)

If you wish to file a Civil Rights program complaint of discrimination, complete the USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form (PDF), found online at http://www.ascr.usda.gov/complaint_filing_cust.html, or at any USDA office, or call (866) 632-9992 to request the form. About Pesticides . . .The Scio Central School District utilizes non-chemical solutions when pest removal from the district buildings or grounds is necessary. Traps,

environmental modifications, and/or mechanical means are utilized to eliminate pests. School law requires the district maintain, on an annual basis, a list of parents who wish to receive advance notice of pesticide application at the school their child attends. To have your name included, a formal request must be submitted. A form is printed BELOW or can be obtained at school.

Clip out form & return to . . .

Gregory Hardy, SuperintendentScio Central School

3968 Washington Street, Scio, NY 14880

Dear Superintendent Hardy:

I am the parent or guardian of _______________________________________________ (names of students with grade levels), who attend the Scio Central School District. It is my understanding that a school law may require every school on an annual basis to maintain a list of parents who wish to receive advance no-tice of pesticide applications at the school their child attends. Each time pesticides are scheduled to be applied at the school, parents on the list must be notified with a written notice at least 48 hours in advance of the application. The notice must specify the date and location of the application, the name of the EPA registration number of the product being applied; the name and number of the person at the school who can be contacted to discuss the precautions being taken to protect children and staff from exposure; and the telephone numbers of informational services that can provide specific information about pesticides being applied.

Please consider this my formal request to be placed on the list to receive those notices and information. If the notices are to be mailed, please mail them to me at the following address:

_________________________________________________________________________________

I can be reached at the following phone numbers: (evening) _______________ (day) _______________

SCS Cafeteria Charge Policy 2014-2015The Scio Central District allows students to charge up to (3) three meals. At the time of the third charge, the cashier will verbally notify the stu-dent and you will be notified via Power Announce that your son/daughter’s lunch account is negative. On the fourth charge, if no money is sent in, your child will receive toast, juice and milk for breakfast and a sandwich, fruit and milk for lunch, until the debt is paid. This policy applies to all students in kindergarten through grade 12.

You may also check your child(ren)’s lunch balance on line using the quick link for Powerschool on the District Home Page or at: http:/powerschool.scio.wnyric.org/public You will need a confi-dential ID and password, obtainable through Mrs. Walsh at 585-593-5510, ext. 1140.

Any money the student brings in will be applied to outstanding charges first. At no time will a stu-dent be allowed to go hungry. Under no circumstances will the student be allowed to charge any extra or a la carte items, including ice cream, if the student’s account shows a negative balance.

Please note also, our breakfast and lunch prices for the 2014-2015 school year have increased to $1.15 and $1.65 respectively.

If at any time you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Cindy Winchell, Cafeteria Manager, (585)593-5510

Welcome Back to School!

I am so excited to begin the 2014-2015 school year at Scio. As we look into the new school year, I look forward to the challenges and celebrations it will bring. I would like to share a few points to make this school year one of the best for your children.

Every child needs to start each day with a good breakfast, whether it is at home or from our breakfast program here at Scio. I am impressed with the breakfast selections that are offered, both hot and cold options. Please encourage your child to start the day out with a nutritious breakfast.

Our teachers and staff at Scio Central School care deeply about your children and are here to partner with you to help your child become the best student they can be. Feel free to call, email or make an appointment to keep communication open between you and your child’s teacher. Together we can make your child successful in school.

I would personally like to invite ALL parents to “Meet the Teacher” Night on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 from 6-7:30 pm for grades PK-8th grade.

Take an interest in your child’s school day. Ask questions that they have to answer with more than just “fine” or “OK”. Try “ Tell me one thing that you liked about school today.” Or “Tell me about something you learned today that you didn’t know yesterday”. Interacting with your child about their school day lets them know that you care about their education.

Did you know that students who are actively involved in extra-curricular activities, art and music perform better academically than those who are not? Research states that it is the connection to school and the support of coaches and advisors that help students perform at a higher level. It is also the personal organization skills needed to remem-ber practices and uniforms that help students stay organized in school also. Please encourage your child to play an instrument, sing in chorus, take extra art classes, play a sport or become involved in one of our many clubs.

THE COMMUNITY WEIGHT ROOM AND WALKING PROGRAM will be open from October 1, 2014 until March 26, 2015. The program will be run Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5-7 p.m. Community members should enter through the back door by the con-cession stand. Please make sure you are dressed appropriately in clean sneakers and workout clothes if using the weight room equipment.

ACCORD after school tutoring and programming will begin in September this year. Highly qualified teachers are available Monday – Thursday to help your child in grades 3-12 with their homework. Bussing is provided at 5:15 pm every day for only those students in the 21st Century Community Learning Center program are allowed to ride bus. Tutoring will only be from 3:15-4:15 pm this year due to funding constraint. The Core Clubs for grades 3-12 continue until 5:15 pm. Monday-Thursday. There are additional oppor-

tunities throughout the year for student involvement including guitar, drum and keyboard lessons, leadership opportuni-ties and field trips. ACCORD paper-work must be completed once every three years for students to participate.

These are just a few suggestions to help your child succeed and soar this year. I look forward to meeting with you both formally and informally. Please let me know if I can help you in any way.
