We gave this accomplished student one more piece of homework to complete before the year was up with some questions about her experience in high school and what she plans to do after. Here’s what she had to say:

What activities were you involved in at high school and in the community?

In high school I was involved in quite a lot. I was on the varsity eld hockey team for four years and a captain for

two of those years, playing as a defensive back.At Northern Westchester Hospital, I served

as a representative for North Salem on the President’s Junior Leadership Council, pro-moting community health. I also have been the editor of the school newspaper, worked as a ca-shier at Harvest Moon Farm and Orchard (we make the best donuts!), been the president of the Math Honor Society and treasurer of the National Honor Society, played both the ute and the piccolo with the North Salem Band, kickbox regularly, and have been a cast member of the annual school musical for ve years.

I do not like to turn down the opportuni-ty to participate in any discipline! I have also achieved excellence in all subjects, won the Golden Dozen Award for excellence in aca-demics and eld hockey, was elected to receive the North Salem Foundation for Learning science scholarship, and am a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership alumni.

What does it feel like to be named valedictorian?

It is pretty cool, and I am glad to have the opportunity. It comes with a lot of extra work, I’ll tell you that, but I am extremely grateful for the title.

Where are you going to college, what will you major in and how did you decide on the college and major?

I will be attending the University of Penn-sylvania and will be enrolled in its School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. UPenn is my absolute dream school and I still cannot believe I was accepted. It has the vibrant intel-lectual community coupled with a social, out-spoken student body I so desire all in the set-ting of the bustling urban environment I have always wanted. Chemistry and calculus were my favorite subjects in school, so I have decided to pursue chemical engineering as my major of choice. I love the innovative nature of chemistry and how it is truly a blend of the mathematics I love and the science I am captivated by.

What is a favorite memory of yours from high school?

My favorite memory from high school has to be the annual trips of the North Salem Band to Six Flags Great Adventure amuse-ment park down in New Jersey for the Music in Our Parks competition. I am a big fan of roller coasters, and I really enjoyed returning to the park year after year with my band friends to

play some music and to accomplish the goal of riding every coaster in the park.

Are there any teachers that you want to give a shout out to?

My two main in uencers in high school were Mrs. Bratt, my AB calculus teacher, and Mr. DiGaetano, my honors chemistry, AP chemistry, and former science research teacher. Mrs. Bratt reminded me just how fun math could be (nerdy, I know) and that if one really wants to achieve in some practice, whether it be math, the arts, or anything, really, one must really concentrate on evolving the mindset that will lead them to their goal and stick to it. I really enjoyed her class, and I still have her “GANAS” poster in my room!

I also really credit my love for chemistry to Mr. DiGaetano. He really taught me to look at this discipline as not just a bunch of letters connected by lines that make up compounds one must memorize to do well in a class, but as the science of the matter that surrounds us and its intricate interaction with itself and energy. He also lled our classes with great humor; he gave me a new appreciation for really bad puns!

How has North Salem High School prepared you for the future?

I think North Salem has allowed me to develop as a rather independent individual that can communicate with others e ciently. North Salem really did not baby the students too much, allowing us to make decisions on our own and to develop some adult responsi-bility. e small classrooms for discussion also allowed for some re nement of argumentative and interpersonal skills, that is, if a student chose to speak up regularly.

What are some goals you have for the future? Some goals I have at the moment are to

complete college and get an internship abroad during that time, maybe get my MBA after col-lege, and then move to Germany. I know this is very speci c, but I am a very plan-oriented in-dividual; however, I am open to change! I also hope to have a family and maybe a few dogs.

What will you miss most about high school and North Salem?

I think I may miss the ability North Salem students have to have close relationships with their teachers. ere is not too much stigma for a student to come after school and ask for help or to stay quickly after class to ask a question on the day’s material. I appreciated that aspect of the small North Salem community.

We gave this accomplished student one more piece of homework to complete before the year was up with some questions about her experience in high school and what she plans to do after. Here’s what she had to say:

What activities are you involved in at high school and in the community?

In school, I’m the vice president of the Math Honor Society and the treasurer of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) club. I’ve been a Girl Scout since third grade and in high school I earned my Silver and Gold Awards. Earning my Gold Award has probably been my greatest achievement to this point and the fact that all members of my troop earned it as well was also really

special. I’ve also been a member of the varsity softball team for three years and was All-League my sophomore and senior years.

is year, I received the North Salem Foundation for Learning Scholarship in math, as well as the New York State Scholarship for Academic Excellence. I also received the Elizabeth Butler Team Spirit Award and Scholar-ship for playing softball.

What does it feel like to be named salutatorian?

It’s honestly been a pretty cool experience, and I’m grateful to my family, teachers, and friends for all they’ve done to help me along the way.   ey’ve all con-tributed immensely to who I am today in a way that I’ll probably never be able to thank them.

I’m also thankful for the op-portunity to speak at graduation, though it is de nitely nerve-racking. I’m really glad I get the chance to welcome everyone on Monday; we’re a really interest-ing group of teenagers (though I’m a bit biased) and I hope I can convey that in my speech.

Where are you going to college, what will you major in and how did you decide on the college and major?

Next year I’m going to Colgate University. I’m not 100 percent certain of a speci c major, but as of now I think that I want to major in math. I decided on Col-gate after going to their accepted students’ day and seeing all that they had to o er both in and out of the classroom.   ough I al-ways considered myself more of a science and math student, I never wanted to give up pursuing any other subjects in college, so Col-gate’s liberal arts core was a good way for me to continue to take a variety of classes while still focus-ing on science and math.

My interest in math has always been strong ever since middle school, and I continued to enjoy it throughout high school. After taking AB and BC calculus, my interest was solidi ed and I’m really excited to explore all the math classes Colgate has to o er.

What is a favorite memory of yours from high school?

Outside of school, my favorite memory has been being on the softball team. We’ve had a lot of fun and interesting memories, including winning sectionals my sophomore year and playing in a college stadium. We were lucky enough to graduate nine seniors who have all been play-ing together since elementary school.   is bond we’ve created has made playing on the team an incredibly enjoyable experience,

and I’m going to miss it so much next year.

Are there any teachers you want to give a shout out to?

Yes, there are de nitely some teachers who have had an impact—Mrs. Falk, my BC calculus teacher; Mrs. Bratt, my AB calculus teacher; Mr. Mittelstadt, my APUSH and economics teacher as well as my softball coach; and Mrs. Drumm, my French teacher. Mrs. Falk and Mrs. Bratt have been instrumental in developing my interest in math. I’ve known Mrs. Falk since I was in eighth grade, and she would always show me interesting perspectives on any curriculum I was learning.   ough I only had Mrs. Bratt for a year, she provided me with a strong and thorough knowledge of calculus that I took into BC calculus and will take to college.

ough Mr. Mittelstadt taught classes outside my academic comfort zone, his classes were always entertaining and full of surprises. On the softball eld, he taught me the importance of con dence in anything you do, and that’s a lesson I’ll certainly bring to college and beyond. Mrs. Drumm also taught me in classes outside my comfort zone and I’ve known her for 5 years. I also trav-eled to France with her and other classmates, which was a priceless experience.   e enthusiasm and positivity she brings to each class is really inspiring.

How has North Salem High School prepared you for the future?

Academically, North Salem has prepared me for the future by allowing me to take a variety of challenging classes.   ese classes have taught me the importance of persistence and working hard,

both lessons I’ll de nitely bring to college.

Almost more importantly, North Salem’s small community has taught me many life lessons as well. It showed me the importance of having a strong support system, as well as the importance of being in a close-knit group.   is is prob-ably part of the reason why I chose Colgate, because I wanted to con-tinue to learn in a small commu-nity similar to North Salem.

What are some goals you have for the future?

I really have no idea where the future is going to take me, but I hope I’ll end up pursuing a ca-reer path that I love. As of now, I think this career will involve math, but I’m still really indecisive and wouldn’t be surprised if this changes. Depending on my major, after college, I might want to go to graduate school. I also know that Colgate has some cool study abroad programs that make it easy for math and science majors to also participate, so hopefully I’ll be able to travel during my four years.

What will you miss most about high school and North Salem?

North Salem has given me some incredible friends and men-tors that I’m really grateful I’ve gotten the opportunity to meet. It has also been a really great place to grow up, and I’m going to miss it next year.

To the graduating Class of 2018, I wanted to wish you all continued success in your future endeavors. I could not have asked for a better group of individuals to lead our school in my rst year. I so appreciated getting to know each and every one of you, what you are passionate about, and how you plan to make the world just a little bit better each and every day. Whether it was watching you from the sidelines, popping into classes daily, or attending one of the many events we had this year, you all always impressed me with your compassion, empathy, and caring for one another.

Many of you stood out as leaders both in the classroom and beyond: We had Girl Scout Gold Award winners, Boy Scout Eagle Scouts, sports captains, AP scholars, and those who starred on stage and in the classroom. You and your class-mates will be attending colleges and universities in over 20 states and the District of Columbia. ere is much you should be proud of and I ask that you remember the North Salem mission as it has served you well these last four years. Con-tinuously learn, question, de ne and solve prob-

lems through critical and creative thinking!I am con dent you will accomplish

great things and look forward to hearing about your successes! Please remember you always have a home at North Salem High School and it has been an honor and privilege to be your principal this year.
