scientific experiments, wrote hundreds of poems, plays, as well astheological essays. She was frequently attacked and chose to defend not onlyher own interest in worldly learning, but also the broad rights of women toeducation and a life of the mind.

ON VIEW: Works by 2012 Sucesos "Woman of the Year" Lorena Alvarez, a master

Shipbuilder and restoration expert at the Houston Maritime Museum will beon view. Including artifacts from the 16th Century (the time of Sor Juana)and Spanish ship models to give a feel to the period in which Sor Juana's lifewas held in context. 

Bio: Lorena Alvarez After spontaneously starting to shape chalk as a child, Lorena wasintroduced to wood carving as a young teenager. She later started a career inantique restorations and has since become an expert at working withplastics, metals, and paints as well. After meeting James Manzolillo, thefounder of the Houston Maritime Museum (HMM), she started working on

model ships for the museum. The rest, as they say, is history. She currentlyserves as resident modeler at the Houston Maritime Museum.
