Message from Geoff Johnson, Research Vice President, I&O: Mobile, Client Computing and Communication Track ManagerHyperconnected workforces need access from their office, home or on the road across a variety of wired and wireless networks. Users are bringing their own preferences for PCs, tablets and smartphones into the workplace for productivity and business access, and are using unified communications across voice, video and data to improve workforce collaboration. Today’s organizations need to re-imagine IT and networking and prepare for this extreme environment. The 2011 Communications track at Gartner Symposium on the Gold Coast provided the foundation to help attendees build strategies spanning mobility, client computing and communications while addressing the ambitions of end users, IT and the business as a whole. Attendees were not only focused on evaluation of communications infrastructure and its operation but also on active adoption. Hot topics included issues related to Cloud Computing, mobility management, data center networking and hybrid unified communications.

Take-aways

Data Center Networking and Virtualization

As more of the data center is virtualized, the network infrastructure requires a complete redesign to meet new requirements. Today, many organizations are struggling with next steps in modernizing their DC network infrastructure. With that in mind, the key recommendations to follow were: Understand customer requirements, and implement metrics to measure outcomes. Establish multi-disciplinary teams to rethink existing architectures and approaches. Invest in maturing your architectural processes. Develop a plan to clean up rack I/O and collapse the network to two tiers. Work on changing the culture from silos and boxes to services. Focus implementations on the holistic data center, not vertical technologies.

Building the Business Case for Unified Communications

Building the business case for UC can take several routes. All are applicable, with some generating faster returns on investment than others. Quantifiable benefits make the strongest justification, yet sometimes these are difficult to find. Historical data and measurements can help with the process. Often it takes a pilot or a trial to show how users can benefit from UC; support from the business unit in driving adoption is key to maintaining its momentum. Anecdotal arguments — specific but sometimes job-function-related examples — and case studies of how previous organizations were able to justify their investment are also useful sources of business case hard data. Bottom-line: There is no simple answer to building the business case; however a structured approach, which identifies the benefits by business unit as well as the cost savings and priorities for the business and I&O, can reap rewards.

What CIOs need to know about iPads and Media Tablets.

iPads are not Notebooks. What’s more, issues surrounding software licensing, security, hosted virtual desktops and support must be noted. Additionally, fidelity problems between iPad and Windows may cause formatting loss. Recommendations: Use executive interest in iPads to acquire the right mobile device management (MDM) tools. Be mindful that iPads are not for everyone so segment your employees by role accordingly. Get ready to not only re-think your approach to enterprise data access security but also to evaluate your support strategies to accommodate BYO devices.

Managing Employee Owned Technology in the Enterprise:

Follow these considerations when formulating BYO Device policies. Recognize that BYOD programs shift costs, but do not eliminate them. Focus on the benefits of not having to manage non-strategic assets. They include several, among which are the freeing up of IT staff to focus on high-value, high-ROI initiatives and creating a more attractive and potentially more productive workplace for new hires. Pay equal attention to the technology and policy-related issues. Consider how employee-owned devices will change overall IT risk and apply appropriate security and management. Get buy-in from HR, legal, finance and business unit leaders as well as IT.

Contextual Communications

Recent advances are allowing enterprises to leverage their unified communications and collaboration investments directly into their business applications and workflow context. But business planners need to identify which processes to change and the most effective way to go about that. Here are some key recommendations to follow: Update your communication and collaboration strategy to include context sensitivity. Work with application groups to put UC and context applications into trials. Identify early communications enablement of business processes opportunities using notifications and context-specific presence lists.

Cloud Network Services

Cloud computing offers the promise of rapid application deployment and dynamic scaling. However, cloud computing resources will be accessed via the public Internet and private networks, both of which present challenges. Public Internet does not easily support business critical applications and typical private networks are rigid and static in nature. Consider the following action plan in developing a cloud-ready network. Assess the location of all end users, their applications and their performance. Document business-critical applications and the level of performance required (availability and response time). Determine application performance optimization methods that are best suited to your network architecture. Optimize traffic flow in relation to network latency, using MPLS, CoS, CDN, WOCs and ADCs. Evaluate how cloud-computing providers can support network and application performance needs. Establish endpoint security solutions to allow direct access to cloud services, rather than forcing users through corporate hubs.

What attendees asked about

These four themes were prominent in analyst discussions with attendees:

• Negotiating telecommunications contracts in Australia, in particular how to handle Telstra’s premium pricing

• The loose relationships that exist in most organizations around unified communications and the lack of an agreed UC roadmap. Although there was a high interest in UC strategies, attendees expressed confusion about the best way to develop and use a value proposition.

• Mobility

• Data Centre networking, including vendor capabilities and architectural considerations

Conference session highlights

The Mobile Scenario: Confusion, Complexity and Opportunity Through 2015

Presenter: Nick Jones, Vice President and Distinguished Analyst

The distinctions between a person’s role as an employee and as a consumer are more blurred than ever. Employees are demanding a wider choice of devices, exploiting consumer devices and applications from app stores and adopting new strategies such as bring-your-own IT. Meanwhile, consumer behavior is changing, too. Online activities are migrating from PC and Web channels to mobile channel as smartphones become more popular and affordable. This session looked at how organizations will choose and use mobile technology services and tools to support groups and offered the following recommendations to get started:

Short-term:

• Find new ways to provide, manage and secure mobile devices and apps.

• Run brainstorm sessions to look for innovative ways to gain advantage from mobile.

• Define a comprehensive set of mobile strategies covering B2C, B2B and B2E domains and refresh them regularly.

• Select a small but sufficient portfolio of mobile development tools to address current platform and application needs.

• Determine where a tablet can deliver ROI (e.g., by replacing a PC).

Long-term:

• Look for opportunities to exploit context.

Unified Communications and Collaboration Scenario: Is Leveraging Hybrid Solutions the Key?

Presenter: Geoff Johnson, Research Vice President

Flexible delivery models enable users to select the optimal cloud and on-premises mix of communications, messaging and collaboration. However, they also pose technical and organizational challenges for CIOs and planners. As Cisco, Microsoft, IBM, Google, Avaya and others battle it out, enterprises must rethink their vendor relations and business models to leverage the opportunity.

While urging enterprises to take advantage of the latest innovations, Geoff highlighted the top 10 UCC challenges that characterize this new environment:

• Network health and capacity

• Identity management and access

• User overload, training and stress

• Content management and compliance

• Device proliferation and mobile control

• Security, data loss prevention and hygiene

• Problem isolation in hybrid architectures

• Rich federation with partners/suppliers

• Consumer applications

• Getting existing vendors to interoperate

National-Scale Broadband Networks — Understanding Upcoming Architectures and Interfaces:

Presenter: Geoff Johnson, Research Vice President

Within three years more than half of the new broadband connections in Asia Pacific will be by fibre-optic cable. Most business have to realize the profound changes in service delivery and distribution strategy that are possible, planned and deployed over ultra-high speed fibre to the home and business (FTTx) today. Over last few years, the ground work for practical deployment and applications has been laid. Now’s the time for Australian and New Zealand business leader to leverage the new service delivery paradigm. This session examined the emerging applications and benefits in open access, national-scale broadband networks, discussed the impacts of fibre (FTTx) architectures and concluded with the following action plan:

• In the short-term: Re-imagine some of your WAN with 100 Mbps access and gigabit branch offices.

• 2012: Draft rudimentary gigabit architecture (to awake corporate thinking on early sites). Educate business leaders on new service delivery opportunities.

• 2013: Get emerging new service and distribution plans into your C-level planning and board agendas. Prepare business re-vitalization, distribution and networking plans for hybrid FTTx/xDSL architectures.

• 2014: Anticipate major business model changes. Stay focused on FTTx for service delivery under alternate supply conditions.
