The great news for the Outback Bowl is that, as usual, bothleagues are deep with quality teams and with the third pick from

each conference, the Outback Bowl will get two fine teamsfor its New Year’s Day match-up in Tampa.

Big Ten Battle Still Wide OpenThe Big Ten will host its second Conference

Championship game this year, however it’s anyone’sguess as to who will play in it. While Wisconsin has

the inside track in the Leaders Division, at least fourteams from the Legends Division still have a chanceto make it to Indianapolis.

Meanwhile, no less than eight potential teams

could be available for an Outback Bowl invitation depending on what happens in the remaining weeks.

SEC Tough as EverWith three teams ranked in the Top 8 spots, including

Alabama at No 1, the SEC once again is loaded withgreat teams. A total of seven SEC teams are ranked in the Top 25 BCS Standings, more than any otherconference. And don’t rule out the chance of an all-SEC National Championship game again.

Either way there will be plenty of good teamsgoing to bowls, including no less than eight teams that will likely end with at least eight wins.

ABC/ ESPN college football analystand former Ohio State and NFL line-backer Chris Spielman was the guestspeaker at the annual Outback BowlKickoff Luncheon October 3rd. About700 bowl Sponsors and Club Membersattended the popular Outback Bowl eventheld at A La Carte Pavilion in Tampa.Spielman shared his thoughts on not onlyfootball, but life, including his book,That’s Why I’m Here, in which Chrisgives voice to his remarkable journey andcherished memories of his late wife andtheir battle against breast cancer.

The luncheon begins the ceremonialsend-off of the Outback Bowl selectioncommittee representatives as they travelto Big Ten and SEC games as scouts/ambassadors of the Bowl as they search for teams to participate in the upcominggame. The luncheon is known for having

high profile speakers over the years such as Urban Meyer, Erin Andrews, CraigJames, Doug Flutie, Lou Holtz, Joe Theismann, Lee Corso and Chris Fowler.

Spielman currently teams with Sean McDonough on ABC Saturday afternoontelecasts. He was a two-time All American and Lombardi Trophy winner at OhioState University then wasdrafted in the second-roundin 1988 by the Detroit Lionswhere he led the team intackles for eight straight years.In 1996 he signed with theBuffalo Bills where he set ateam record with 206 tackles.After requiring spinal surgeryin 1997 he sat out the nextseason to spend time with hiswife who was diagnosed withbreast cancer. He retired fromfootball in 1999 after anotherneck injury. In 2009 he wasinducted into the CollegeFootball Hall of Fame.
