VADEA ANNUAL CONFERENCE 14-15 JUNE 2013

What does it mean to be 'on track'? Is being on track about travelling on familiar pathways? Or are we on track

when we explore new terrain, new ideas and new technologies? Are we as Visual Arts and Design educators on the

right track, wrong track, off track? How do we keep track of contemporary practice in the visual arts, as well as

developments in curriculum that affect us all? VADEA NSW is excited to bring you another thought-provoking

conference of keynote speakers, panel discussions and cases of best practice in curriculum development.Participants will share a spirit of adventure by taking part in purpose built tracks in and beyond the city that connect

us with the art world while extending our understanding of and networks with contemporary artists, art historians,

critics and colleagues. ON TRACK has been designed to enrich our knowledge of the contemporary art world - its

practices, preferences, and priorities - and present ideas for application in our professional teaching lives.

CONFERENCE OVERVIEW

DAY 1: TRACKS ACROSS SYDNEYFriday 14 June (various locations in and across Sydney)

Day 1 (Friday 14 June) is where the adventure starts. Participants will choose one of 8 unique tracks (see outline over

page). The day will involve visits to 3-4 venues per track, including artists studios, large and small-scale galleries,

public spaces undergoing redevelopment, high school art departments and an interactive interdisciplinary theatre.Tracks are planned for a range of locations across greater Sydney. Each track will have a limit of approximately 20

participants. Where necessary, minibuses (or similar) will whisk you to venues. Pick the track that best suits you!

DAY 2:KEYNOTE SPEAKERS and PRESENTATIONSSaturday 15 June, Powerhouse Museum, Ultimo

Day 2 (Saturday 15 June) will be held at the Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo. The focus is contemporaneity, creative

practice and curriculum development. Keynote speakers include one of the worlds most powerful thinkers on

contemporary art today, the art historian Professor Terry Smith; the world-renowned sculptor Linde Ivimey; and

internationally recognised photographic artist Petrina Hicks. Participants will be introduced to the curriculum assets

of the Powerhouse Museum and be better positioned to understand, and resist, the proposals and politics of theAustralian Curriculum: The Arts. The program includes a session with recent Premiers Teachers Scholarship

recipients who will speak about how they used the award and ways you may formulate your own goals and develop

your own future track. The conference will conclude with an evening of drinks, canaps, and networking.

DAY 1 PROGRAM: TRACKS ACROSS SYDNEY

When you register for Friday 14 June, you will be asked to number your preferred choices 1 to 3, with ONE being

your first preference. Please read the options below so that you are ready to complete your registration.NB. FURTHER DETAILS OF EACH TRACK WILL BE PROVIDED TO PARTICIPANTS AFTER REGISTRATION, PLEASE CHECK THE

WEBSITE FOR UPDATES. WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO BRING A PACKED LUNCH AND A BOTTLE OF WATER.

CHOOSE FROM:

A Off the Wall

This track is for you if your interests go beyond the predictable and into the aspirational! The track begins with a contemporaryprintmaking demonstration at the National Art School, complemented by a tour of the working studios and the ancient

"prison" spaces. We follow with a private studio tour led by Mini Graff, a street artist who 'transforms an anonymous repetitive

urban landscape into a unique and personal aesthetic experience'. Later, we take a mini bus ride to White Rabbit Gallery to

view Smash Palace. Finally our trail concludes at the MCA to view Jeff Wall's large-scale backlit cibachrome photographs.

B From the Margin to the Core: A Fluid Body of Thought

Commencing at the William Wilkins Gallery, NSW DEC, Bridge Street, Sydney we preview the 40-year anniversary tour of

selected HSC Visual Arts ARTEXPRESS works from the Wilkins Collection. This presentation will be linked by video conference to

regional areas. Then to Artspace Woolloomooloo to experienceAccomplice Petra Gemeinboeck & Rob Saunders, SmokingBolt

Simon Ingram and The Woman and the Snowman Mari Velonaki in conjunction with the 19th International Symposium

Electronic Art (ISEA). Finally by ferry to the Manly Art Gallery and Museum where we view Jonathon Jones' solo exhibition for

the 2013 Guringai Festival. Jonathon's practice explores the critical overlap between black and white histories of Australia.

C What is Contemporary Art?

This trail seeks to ask questions about contemporary art through a selection of Sydneys art galleries. The trail will begin at the

newly refurbished COFA where we attend a print workshop with Michael Kempson. After a coffee in the local Paddington area

participants will be bussed to Firstdraft gallery where we will engage with emerging artists and the directors of the Artist Run

Gallery. Wesuggest a lunch in the Haymarket precinct and then we will have a session at gallery 4A Centre for Contemporary

Asian Art, viewing the current exhibitions and speaking with curators and artists.

D Atelier Trail

Follow us on an atelier foray and enter the private worlds of successful contemporary artists; Anne Zahalka, Tony Williams,

James Powditch and George Gittoes. We gain exclusive access and learn about the varied practices of these artists as they talk

about their work in studio spaces scattered across Sydney's infamous inner west. Starting in the home and studio of

photographer Zahalka in Newtown, we will then be lead to the Lennox St Studios with painter Tony Williams. The atelier

adventure continues in a meeting with mixed media artist James Powditch, and our track is colourfully concluded at theinspirational Rockdale Yellow House with painter and film-maker, George Gittoes.

E Harbour Views

Enjoy stunning harbour views, practical artmaking workshops and talks with artists and curators. Start the day on beautiful

Sydney harbour at Taronga zoo. Learn more about the zoos educational facilities and take part in an observational drawing

workshop with Michael Herron, a former artist in residence at the zoo. Then a short bus ride to the newly renovated Mosman

Art gallery where we will spend time touring current exhibitions and gain insights about these exhibitions from curators and

artists. We finish the day with an exciting Visual Design workshop with art teacher Jess Melkman at Mosman High.

F Art Beyond the City

An opportunity to leave the cityscape and the familiar galleries behind to discover two iconic art centres in Western Sydney:

Casual Powerhouse Arts Centre and Campbelltown Arts Centre. Our morning at Casula will focus on the Pigeon Auction

exhibition: exploring subversive, suburban subcultures through the eyes of local artists. After an artist-led practical sculpture

workshop, we will move to Campbelltown for a guided tour of their expansive sculpture and Japanese gardens. Our track willconclude with a guided tour of the Catching Lightexhibition: interactive, innovative collaborations between analogue and

digital new media art, sound and performance artists.

G Trails from Outer Suburbia

This track begins at Penrith Regional Gallery and The Lewers Bequest at Emu Plains, for a behind the scenes look at the site and

collection of Margo and Gerald Lewers. Artist Kendal Murray will speak about her work and gallery staff and local teachers will

look at curriculum directions based on the site and exhibitions. After lunch in the garden, we travel to the Western Sydney

Parklands to look at the ways artists, architects, landscape architects and designers have collaborated on sustainable designs in

the Parklands. Architect John Choi, from the architectural practice CHROFI will join others involved in the project to discuss this

collaboration. Anne Loxley from MCAs C3West program will speak about recent projects held at the parklands.

H Pixel Paths: Ventures into Digital and New Media

Pixel Paths: Ventures into Digital and New Media will provide us with an opportunity to participate in workshops and

exhibitions that can be applied to the classroom setting. We will experience hands-on workshops at i-cinema, UNSW and the

Australian Film Television & Radio School that focus on animation, immersive new technologies, and remix culture, inherent in

contemporary photography. Teachers will take home a small education kit providing suggestions for learning experiences.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Professor Terry Smith Andrew W Mellon Professor of Contemporary Art History and Theory and

Distinguished Visiting Professor, National Institute for Experimental ArtsTerry Smith is the author ofMaking the Modern: Industry, Art and Design in America (University of Chicago Press,

1993; inaugural Georgia OKeeffe Museum Book Prize 2009); Transformations in Australian Art, volume 1, The

Nineteenth Century: Landscape, Colony and Nation, and volume 2, The Twentieth Century: Modernism and

Aboriginality (Craftsman House, Sydney, 2002); The Architecture of Aftermath (University of Chicago Press, 2006);

What is Contemporary Art?(University of Chicago Press, 2009); Contemporary Art: World Currents (Laurence King

and Pearson/Prentice-Hall, 2011); and Thinking Contemporary Curating (Independent Curators International, 2012).

In 2010 Terry was named Australia Council Visual Arts Laureate by the Australian Government, and won the Mather

Linde Ivimey world renowned found object sculptorLinde Ivimey's sculpture is often technically complex and intricate, utilising skills from welding to cooking, weaving,

wood-sculpting, and sewing, all adapted to create objects with an intense personal resonance. The emotional impact

of her figures and animals is multiplied by her use of materials - skin, bone, fabric, hair, wax, gemstones, teeth, and

other personal and found objects. A monograph, Linde Ivimey, SCULPTURE, written by Louise Martin Chew, waspublished in 2012 to compliment a major survey of her work at UQAM, IF PAIN PERSISTS. As a keynote for the

VADEA NSW 2013 Conference, Linde will be presenting the works included in the survey exhibition as well as

discussing the collaborative process of writing and publishing her book. (See:http://www.lindeivimey.com.au/)

Petrina Hicks internationally recognised photographic artistPetrina Hickshigh gloss, large-scale photographs are reminiscent of advertising for slick fashion labels or commercial

products. However, her photographs play with the seductive qualities of advertising to confront the viewer and

reveal truths that lie beneath the surface. Full of ambiguity and loaded with contradictions, her photographs

question the endless cycle of seduction and consumption in our contemporary world. With recent exhibitions in

Melbourne (Hippy and the Snake, Helen Gory Galerie, 2011), Sydney (Every Rose Has Its Thorn, Stills Gallery, 2010)

and Germany (Every Rose Has Its Thorn, Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart, 2010), Hicks beautiful photographic

Presentation by Dr Karen Maras, Deputy Head of School (Research), Faculty of Education NSW,

Australian Catholic UniversityKaren Maras is Senior Lecturer in Visual Arts Education. Through her research on childrens cr itical reasoning in art,

Karen has established a framework for understanding how and on what conceptual terms students develop critical

theories of art. This work has informed submissions she has made in collaboration with Dr Kerry Thomas to ACARA

regarding the coherence and appropriateness of the proposed Australian Curriculum for Visual Arts. Karen has

published papers on her research and its implications for curriculum in national and international journals, and has

also contributed to the development of NSW curriculum K-12 since the early 1990s.

Presentations by recipients of recent NSW Premiers Teachers ScholarshipsA panel discussion with recent NSW Premiers Teachers Scholarships recipients Hannah Chapman, Luise Guest, Carol

Carter and Craig Maylon who will address grant writing, and the opportunities for research and travel afforded to

them as recent recipients. The session will inspire you to apply for a Teacher s Scholarship and/or a VADEA NSW

grant and help you set your own future track by formulating your own goals.
