Welcome to Chicago! We are pleased to present the inaugural Tall + Urban Innovation Conference, which brings together a critical cross-section of tall building owners, developers, occupiers, operators, designers, engineers, and builders – along with the interested public – to investigate the cutting-edge in sustainable urbanism, as presented by the world’s foremost examples.

The event you will be experiencing over the course of the next two days is the result of an evolutionary process in our CTBUH Awards Program. The CTBUH Annual Awards Event was established in 2001 as part of a dinner in honor of Lynn S. Beedle, the Council’s founder. From that intimate beginning, it has become an immensely popular and influential program, covered by the global media. It has expanded the range of disciplines and projects recognized, to fully embrace the impact that tall buildings have on urban life. The Tall + Urban Innovation Conference reflects not only the expanding scope and influence of the Awards program, but also the increasing pace of innovation in the industry.

This two-day conference will see the owner/developer and design teams for 48 Finalist projects compete in front of an international audience and live juries, for winning distinctions across nine award categories. The presentations you will see acknowledge the wide scope of disciplines involved in bringing skyscrapers from concept to reality. They address the approaches and built examples that can help guide us through the challenges we face, where climate change and urbanization collide, presenting significant challenges to the built environment, and to humanity itself. The expertise and inventiveness demonstrated by these projects and people provide inspiration and show the great potential offered by “city shapers” to solve the problems of today and tomorrow. We sincerely hope you enjoy the next two days!

Continuing Education Credits

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat is a registered American Institute of Architects (AIA) Continuing Education Credits (CES) provider. Registered professionals could expect to accumulate up to 10.5 hours of CES credits during the two-day event (including AIA Health, Safety & Welfare and Sustainable Design credits). A Certificate of Completion will be provided to registrants upon request.

Shaping Skylines Through Engineering Innovation

Aine Brazil, Vice Chairman, Thornton Tomasetti Winner of the 2018 Fazlur R. Khan Lifetime Achievement Award

Aine M. Brazil, recipient of this year’s Fazlur R. Khan Lifetime Achievement Award, is a leading structural engineer who has been instrumental in shaping the skylines of cities across the globe. In her 40-plus year career, she has been responsible for the design

and construction of some of the most significant high-rise buildings in the United States and internationally. Her pioneering work includes the 58-story, 300-meter-tall Comcast Center and adjacent 60-story Comcast Technology Center in Philadelphia, the massive Hudson Yards development in New York, and the 43-story Palazzo Lombardia in Milan, Italy. Brazil’s prominent work and significant contributions to the built environment have earned her numerous accolades and titles. She has always been, and continues to be, passionate about encouraging women to join the engineering profession.

Rebuilding New York City in a Time of Crisis

Larry Silverstein, Chairman, Silverstein Properties Winner of the 2018 Lynn S. Beedle Lifetime Achievement Award

Larry Silverstein, winner of this year’s Lynn S. Beedle Lifetime Achievement Award, is a developer and real estate investor whose lifetime of work has produced countless contributions to the field of tall buildings. He has overseen the development and

management of 3.7 million square meters of office, residential, hotel, and retail space over a decades-long career. Silverstein is probably best-known for his tenacity and steady hand on New York real estate during tumultuous times. In July 2001, he completed the largest real estate transaction in New York history when he signed a 99-year lease on the World Trade Center, only to see it destroyed in terrorist attacks six weeks later on September 11, 2001. Since then, Silverstein has worked diligently to rebuild the office components of the World Trade Center site, a $30 billion undertaking.

Streets Take to the Sky and Dance: American Copper Buildings, New York City

The American Copper Buildings, two bold and dynamic residential towers on New York City’s East River, are the tallest copper-clad buildings in the world. The natural material is expected to patina gracefully over time. The 761-unit luxury rental community reaches 41 and 48 stories in height, with an iconic 3-story skybridge connecting the two towers, which pivot noticeably. The formal approach allowed for hundreds of unique unit layouts in the building, a departure from the “copy and paste” floor layouts of older residential towers in the city.

Chair: Zurich Esposito, Executive Vice President, AIA Chicago

Vertical Integration: An Educational/Residential Community Rises: 35XV, New York City

Rising 102 meters above a mid-block site, 35XV is a unique, hybrid residential-academic building located in Manhattan’s vibrant Chelsea neighborhood. Utilizing excess development rights from the historic Xavier High School, the building’s design artfully resolves a host of requirements, including the provision of needed expansion space for Xavier, and the creation of highly-crafted residential units that take advantage of their elevated location.

2A

A Generous Public Domain at an Urban Crossroads: 150 North Riverside, Chicago

The 150 North Riverside site is located prominently at the confluence of the three branches of the Chicago River, and less than one block away from one of Chicago’s busiest commuter train stations. With exposed railroad tracks on the west side ofthe site and the city requirement for a riverside pedestrian path on the east side, the project team met the challenge of a tight site by consolidating building loads onto a narrow core, minimizing the footprint of the tower and delivering generous public space and transparency to the street level.

Contoured for the Context: Gaia Building, Quito

Located in the Ecuadorian capital of Quito, the Gaia Building has been constructed asa new landmark for the city. Comprised of a total of 15,000 square meters of mixed-usespace and topped with a large roof garden, its form is visually connected withthe distant Andes mountains. Inspired by the area’s dynamism, the main concept of the design was to impart a sense of movement through manipulation of the façade, from which portions are strategically “excavated,” such that the building has no exterior right-angled corners..

Bringing Office Space Up into the Light: Poly Real Estate Headquarters, Guangzhou

Poly Real Estate Headquarters is an office and trade center development consisting of two towers, each coupled with a low-rise podium that accommodates exhibition and retail uses; the below-grade spaces include an exhibition hall and trade center. The two offset-core towers, which include a thin bar of office space, maximize light transmission to their interiors. On the north, the towers’ forms are defined by floor-to-ceiling glass, shaded by vertical fins; on the south, their structural framework is exposed.

Chair: Ron Klemencic, Chairman & CEO, MKA / Past CTBUH Chairman (2001-2006)

Shining a Light on Livability: Lumiere, Sydney

Perhaps only a few could have predicted the degree to which Lumiere Residences would so thoroughly encapsulate an Australian sensibility toward vertical architecture when it originally completed. Ten years on, the tower’s numerous green features and common-sense amenities have been replicated by many other residential towers throughout the country, validating its impact as a model for the future.

For a Modern Media Company, a Tower of Clarity and Transparency: New York Times Tower, New York City

Over the past 10 years, the New York Times Tower has become a landmark worthy of the institution that commissioned it, particularly because of its resolution of the symbolic and functional pressures of a rapidly evolving media company in a neighborhood that bears its name. It achieves a high level of transparency with the innovation of a second skin of cleverly-spaced ceramic rods, which reduce the heat load to a point where the building is energy-efficient and yet has the great luxury of floor-to-ceiling, water-white glass.

A Towering, Bold Statement about Government’s Relationship with its People and the Environment: San Francisco Federal Building, San Francisco

The San Francisco Federal Building set a precedent for high-performance, design-driven government buildings in the US and beyond, and its legacy holds governments to account for developing and operating real estate that reflects their citizens’ values of quality design and protecting the environment. Designed as part of the government’s Design Excellence Program, the building consists of an 18-story tower of reinforced concrete, a four-story steel braced frame annex building, and a standalone pavilion for a restaurant.

From Grain Silo to Glorious Living: The Silo, Copenhagen

The Silo is a renovation of the largest industrial building in the redeveloped neighborhood of Nordhavn (North Harbor) in Copenhagen, Denmark. It has been transformed from a grain silo into a 38-unit apartment building, with a public function space on the ground floor and a restaurant on the top floor. The immensity of the original enclosures makes for dramatic, raw spaces with ceiling heights up to 7 meters. Thanks to a clever façade modification, apartments have floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies with a view of Copenhagen’s skyline.

Chair: Javier Quintana de Una, Director, IDOM / CTBUH UK Chapter Chair

A Contemporary Conversion Gives an Old Tower New Life: Angel Court, London

Angel Court is located in an area where no new high-rise buildings are permitted. However, by stripping an existing 1970s tower to its core, and replacing it with an intelligent and characterful building that responds to statutory, environmental, functional and aspirational requirements, Angel Court has become a contemporary tower that integrates into its historic surroundings. A unique double-fritted façade treatment renders its outer appearance translucent, while limiting solar gain and enhancing views for occupants.

3A

Ribbons Over Islington: A Distinct Residential Tower in a Desirable London Neighborhood: Canaletto, London

The Canaletto residential tower, located halfway between the City of London and Angel in Islington, comprises a 31-story tower with studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, and one distinct penthouse with a full rooftop. The pattern of the façade clusters groups of two to three floors together, bookended by forward and reverse “letter-C”-shaped extrusions, forming vertical communities that relate more closely to the small scale of neighboring buildings than to a typical high-rise.

A City of Justice for the City of Light: Tribunal de Paris, Paris

The new Paris Courthouse, with an internal area of around 100,000 square meters, accommodates up to 8,000 people per day. The building has a plinth ranging from five to eight stories, on top of which stands a tower of three superimposed parallelepipeds, whose section diminishes as the tower gets higher, creating a distinctive stepping profile. The tower’s outline breaks in two places, on the 19th and 29th floors, where “hanging gardens” are provided. Its 90 courtrooms are served by a monumental public lobby.

Energy Company Headquarters is an “Open Book” on Sustainable Design: Manitoba Hydro Place, Winnipeg

Manitoba Hydro, a government-owned utility company, gets nearly all its electricity from self-renewing water power. Its headquarters tower, Manitoba Hydro Place, integrated time-tested environmental concepts with advanced technologies to achieve a “living building” that dynamically responds to the local climate. The architectural solution clearly responds to the client’s vision, and relies on passive free energy without compromising on design quality and, most importantly, human comfort.

Chair: Lynn Osmond, President & CEO, Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF)

Efficiently Sublime: The Tall Building in the Modern City: Comcast Center, Philadelphia

Comcast Center was designed to exude a heightened sense of innovation and public engagement – qualities that align with both the tower’s primary tenant, Comcast, and the host city of Philadelphia. A major emphasis was thus placed on the tower’s interplay with the ground plane. A large, south-facing plaza greets pedestrians entering the development, itself straddling and connecting with an underground train station. Three “sky atria” in the lower portion of the tower’s south façade overlook its plaza, providing tenants with unique homes.

Clean Lines, Core Principles, and Forward-Looking Innovation: Hegau Tower, Singen

Simplicity of form and selective use of materials emphasize the fundamental design idea behind Hegau Tower – to formulate a clear statement of Modernism. The building’s components, structure and envelope, as well as the users and their activities within, are clearly legible through the transparent façades. The southwest-facing façade expands beyond the building volume vertically and horizontally. The screens form one continuous glass sheet along the forecourt, connecting both the low and high building components into one.

A Bold Icon Communicates a Global City’s Identity to the World: Shanghai World Financial Center, Shanghai

The Shanghai World Financial Center (SWFC) is a symbol of commerce and culture that speaks to the city’s emergence as a global capital. Located in Shanghai’s Pudong District, the mixed-use SWFC is a vertical city, containing offices, urban retail and dining spaces, and a 174-room five-star Park Hyatt Hotel. Above the hotel is an observatory, the top floor of which includes a glass-floored sky bridge that soars over a dramatic gap in the building form, giving the tower its unmistakable profile.

Modern Optimism with a Nod to Bauhaus History on the Mediterranean: Rothschild Tower, Tel Aviv

This unique residential tower is anchored to Rothschild Boulevard in the heart of Tel Aviv’s White City, which is filled with thousands of Bauhaus buildings dating back to the 1930s and 1940s. The large building is distinctive for its clear glass, protected in this desert climate by a delicate louver screen that acts as an elegant white “veil,” inspired by the ventilated layers of traditional Middle Eastern clothing. It both defines and obscures the distinction between the public image of the building and the private realm within.

Chair: Bill Baker, Partner, SOM / Past CTBUH Trustee (2008 – 2014)

A ‘Building in Motion’ for a Dynamic City: Azrieli Sarona, Tel Aviv

The Azrieli Sarona Tower is the first “twisted” tall building in Israel. The substantial mass of the tower was carefully designed in order to create a unique, elegant office building, while maintaining a delicate balance between its presence in the skyline and its importance as a symbol for the Azrieli Group. The project’s clear achievement is in the highly choreographed design and the meticulous composition of the tower, as expressed by its delicate clear skin and its relationship to the surrounding urban environment.

4A

High-End, High-Rise Living, Extended: Beirut Terraces, Beirut

Beirut Terraces is a unique 25-floor, 110-meter waterfront residential tower, located in Beirut’s Central District, the most desirable residential area in Lebanon. Inspired by layers of history, Beirut Terraces is set to shape the city’s future by reviving the indoor/outdoor living experience through the introduction of a localized “vertical village” concept, with extended terraces. Through the recession and extension of enclosed space across irregular, shifting floor plates, the tower externally expresses the unique qualities of each living unit.

Reinventing Heritage: Zeitz MOCAA, Cape Town

A disused grain silo in Cape Town has been adapted to accommodate Africa’s first international museum dedicated to contemporary African art, as well as a high-end hotel. A 33-meter-tall storage annex consisting of 42 vertical concrete tubes and a 58-meter-tall grain elevator tower were connected by carving out a central atrium from the silo’s cellular structure. The atrium’s volume takes the shape of a grain of corn, one of the many that had passed through the building throughout its history.

A New Urban Space for Lower Manhattan: World Trade Center Master Plan, New York City

In 2002, the “Memory Foundations” design won the commission to rebuild the 6.5 hectares of Lower Manhattan destroyed by the terrorist attack of 9/11. There was a fundamental requirement to balance the memory of the tragedy with the need to foster a vibrant and working neighborhood. The rebuilding of the World Trade Center site as a public open space has become a valuable catalyst for the successful rebuilding of the mixed-use office towers that surround it, helping to regenerate the Lower Manhattan economy and real estate market.

Chair: Timothy Johnson, Design Partner, NBBJ & CTBUH Trustee / Past CTBUH Chairman (2011 – 2014)

An Anchor of Urban Regeneration: Barangaroo South / International Towers, Sydney

The three towers of International Towers Sydney are the driving force behind Barangaroo South, Sydney’s largest urban regeneration project in decades. It unites the CBD with the western waterfront, providing a new financial services hub, transforming a contaminated former wharf into a new district of Sydney, reconnecting it to the harbor and giving people back a crucial part of the city. The streets are fully pedestrianized; cars access the single basement at two points. This enables an unbroken active street front, encouraging people into ground-floor retail elements.

Breaking Through the Podium Mold to Enhance the Public Realm: Greatwall Complex, Wuhan

The Greatwall Complex has been designed and delivered as an exemplary development in the financial center of Wuhan, China, providing a world-class workplace and retail center, a vibrant public realm, as well as a high-performance and sustainable building. An Urban Quarter, Integrated into the Local Context: SOHO Fuxing Plaza, Shanghai

The former French Concession in Shanghai is known for its typical rectilinear development – the li long. “Li” stands for neighborhood, and “long” refers to the narrow rectilinear streets separating the buildings. This urban morphology is known for its intimate spaces. The design for SOHO Fuxing Plaza, an urban quarter with restaurants, shops and offices primarily intended for young start-up companies, adopts the scale and orientation of the neighboring blocks, and integrates historic buildings, resulting in a harmonious new offering.

Chair: Michelangelo Sabatino, Dean, College of Architecture, Illinois Institute of Technology

A Beacon of Red and Green, Connected to the Cityscape: Oasia Hotel Downtown, Singapore

Envisaged as a “tropical tower” in the concrete jungle, the Oasia Hotel Downtown incorporates lush greenery on its façade and terraces. The tower is like a giant tree - soft, layered, alive, breathing, shading – providing respite and relief to its occupants, neighbors and city: a true vertical urban habitat. Landscaping is used extensively as an architectural surface treatment, and forms a major part of the development’s material palette, both internally and externally, achieving an overall Green Plot Ratio of over 1,000 percent.

Greening the Streetscape and the Skyline: SKYPARK, Hong Kong

SKYPARK is a mixed-use development located at Mong Kok, one of the densest urban districts in Hong Kong. The objective was to build a community for young singles and couples, who are attracted by the vibrant, energetic and fascinating lifestyle in this neighborhood. At the tower top, a residential clubhouse connects to a landscaped garden on the roof, via the broad “Sky Stair,” a large outdoor staircase that not only acts as a connector, but also serves as an iconic architectural/landscape feature and a gathering space in its own right.

Advancing Computerized Wind-Loading Tests to the Next Level: Hi-Res CFD for Wind Loading of Tall Buildings

Accurate analysis of mean and resonant wind loads is vital for the structural design of tall buildings. Whereas physical Wind Tunnel Testing (WTT) to determine these loads is still accepted by the industry as the necessary default practice, the wind engineering community recognizes that a time will come when computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling is able to accurately document the interaction of wind and buildings. This approach to CFD holds strong potential for the future of wind engineering.

Vertical Village as National Symbol: Lotte World Tower, Seoul

Becoming the world’s fifth-tallest building in 2017, the 123-story Lotte World Tower rises to 555 meters and contains one of the world’s most complex mixed-use programs. The development is a groundbreaking example in the quest to embrace the programmatic spectrum of the city into a “vertical village.” The program includes a transit center, parking, a public square, retail spaces, movie theaters, a concert hall, restaurants, healthcare facilities, rooftop gardens, conference spaces, office space, a hotel, residences, and an observation deck.

Chair: Bob Pratt, Co-Head of Global Design & Construction, Tishman Speyer Properties

A Landscape Painting Comes to Life in the Heart of the City: Chaoyang Park Plaza, Beijing

Chaoyang Park Plaza is set on the edge of Beijing’s largest public park, and has been envisioned as an extension of its green space. The scheme expresses the “Shanshui City” philosophy, derived from the East Asian perception of a world imbued with an affinity for nature. The design translates natural elements found in classical Shanshui landscape painting into a large sculptural art form that evokes a spiritual resemblance to nature on a city scale.

Sydney’s New Front Door Swings Open: International Towers, Sydney

The three towers of International Towers Sydney are the driving force behind Barangaroo, Sydney’s largest urban regeneration project in decades. It unites the CBD with the western waterfront, providing a new financial services hub on Sydney Harbour. The three sibling towers, harmonious but with distinct details providing individual character, are carefully positioned on a radial geometry to maximize access to natural light and views. Opening out over the water, they now mark Sydney’s new front door.

The Axis Mundi of the Pearl River Delta Megacity: Ping An Finance Center, Shenzhen

The Shenzhen Ping An Finance Center (PAFC), the world’s fourth-tallest building, is a transit-integrated, 599-meter structure that occupies a major node in the increasingly connected megacity of Hong Kong-Shenzhen-Guangzhou. Since its completion, PAFC has become a well-loved landmark, both for its iconic expressiveness on the Shenzhen skyline and for its craftsmanship and enduring materiality. Timber Construction at Tallwood House, Vancouver

The Tallwood House at Brock Commons, an 18-story, 400-bed student residence on the campus of the University of British Columbia, has been recognized as the tallest hybrid mass-timber building in the world. It stands as a testament to the advancement of engineered wood and demonstrates the feasibility of using mass timber for high-rise buildings. The building uses a unique timber structure: five-ply cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor panels, point-supported by glue-laminated timber columns, all resting on a concrete transfer slab at level two.

Liberating the Elevator from Ropes: MULTI

MULTI – the world’s first rope-less, multi-directional elevator – ushers in the end of the 160-year reign of rope-dependent vertical transportation, harnessing the power of linear motor technology to move multiple cars in a single shaft. MULTI requires fewer and smaller shafts than conventional elevators and can increase a building’s usable area by up to 25 percent, adding rentable/leasable space. Instead of one cabin per shaft moving up and down, MULTI offers multiple cabins operating in loop, much like a metro system inside a building.

Chair: Robert Halvorson, Global Head of Structures/Executive Vice President, WSP

A Lightweight Motion Control Device Takes Wing: Hummingbird – Tuned Liquid Column Gas Damper

The Hummingbird is a revolutionary tuned liquid column gas damper that uses a system of water pipes and independently tuned air springs to mitigate wind motion in tall buildings. Unlike traditional tuned liquid dampers, 100 percent of the water mass in the Hummingbird is active, which allows it to provide equivalent damping with a lighter and smaller footprint. Further, the Hummingbird’s modular design is highly flexible and configurable, which increases the number of potential installation locations.

Lean Core + Prefab Blade Wall System

The development of the lean-core + blade-wall system grew out of a brief to create a new high-rise living typology that was lean, flexible and driven by a standardized, prefabricated approach. The objective was to reduce reliance on the central core for stability, allowing the core design to be lean in terms of the size and thickness of walls. A supplementary stability system consisting of flat slabs acting as outrigger arms, which could be integrated into the required residential brief, was devised.

Delivering the World’s Tallest Volumetric Modular Apartment Building: 461 Dean, New York City

This 363-unit residential tower is constructed of volumetric modular units, large building elements that can be linked together to form complete buildings, without the need for additional superstructure. Constructors can create entire rooms in a factory setting, and then ship these out to be assembled on the site, saving time and labor costs, and reducing the potential for errors or accidents.

Constructing the ‘Jenga’ Building was No Game: 56 Leonard, New York City

56 Leonard has been called the “Jenga” building due to its projecting floors, as well as the irregular spacing and location of the balconies throughout its 57 stories. Significant cantilevers on two sides, one over an occupied building, made 56 Leonard especially challenging to construct. It was built using a custom, stackable perimeter screen system that provided full, passive fall protection.

An Office Tower That ‘Hangs’ from its ‘Hat’ over an Adjacent Theater: 111 Main, Salt Lake City

This Class A office tower had to be built over a theater being simultaneously constructed by a different team, without compromising the theater interior. The design solution suspends the southern portion of the office tower from a hat truss over a section of the four-story theater, avoiding perimeter tower columns puncturing its space. In recognition of its role, the truss is expressed as a structural crown.

A Creative Use of Closed-Cavity Façades Opens Up New Possibilities: The EY Centre, Sydney

The distinctively sculptural, 37-story EY Centre building employs a world-first timber-and-glass closed-cavity façade (CCF) system, giving it an instantly recognizable appearance, defined by its shimmering, organic, golden-hued curves. Smart-building technology monitors air quality, sunlight, power and water usage, adjusting the system, enabling energy savings of 30-40 percent, compared to a typical façade.

A Milestone in Supertall Construction: Ping An Finance Center, Shenzhen

Ping An Finance Center advanced nearly every dimension of supertall construction technology, including deep excavation, large-diameter piling (posts installed to support the foundations of a superstructure), ultra-high concrete pumping (tested to a height of 1,000 meters), steel erection, and digital technologies for monitoring the structure’s performance during construction.

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat’s 2018 Awards Program recognizes projects and individuals that have made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of tall buildings and the urban environment, and that achieve sustainability at the highest and broadest level. The objective of this awards program is to deliver a comprehensive and sophisticated view of these important buildings, while advocating for improvements in every aspect of their performance, especially those that have the greatest effect on the people who use these buildings each day. This often means that the buildings highlighted are not the tallest in a given year, but represent the best qualities and innovations in the typology.

The CTBUH initiated this program in 2001, with the creation of the Lynn S. Beedle Lifetime Achievement Award, later adding the Fazlur R. Khan Medal in 2004. It began recognizing the team achievement in tall building projects by issuing Best Tall Building awards in 2007. CTBUH issues four regional awards each year (Americas, Asia & Australasia, Europe, and Middle East & Africa), and from these regional awards, one project is awarded the honor of overall Best Tall Building Worldwide. The awards program has continued to expand over the years to address specific industry developments and recognize those buildings/innovations that are pushing the typology forward: Innovation Award (2012), 10 Year Award (2013), Urban Habitat Award (2014), and Construction Award (2017).

Celebration of the award-winning projects is recognized through the annual Tall + Urban Innovation Conference, where Finalists in each award category present their projects to an international audience and live juries. Winners are decided during the conference and awards are conferred at the Ceremony & Dinner held at the close of the event. The four regional Best Tall Building Winners also compete for the title of overall Best Tall Building Worldwide, which is announced at the close of the Ceremony & Dinner.

Projects are judged by four esteemed juries:

CTBUH Journal | 2017 Issue III

Talking Tall: Jeanne Gang

What does it mean to you to be credited

with what was at the time “the tallest building designed by a woman-led

architecture firm”? Is that a meaningful

distinction? It’s exciting to be designing tall buildings. It is

a very complex process, and something that I

think that would benefit from more women

architects. Frankly, there is a lot to be invented

and discovered in this building type. I think I

brought some distinctive observations to the

type – maybe not because I am a “woman

architect,” but because I am the architect I am. Unfortunately, I would say the building type

suffers because there is not enough diversity

of all kinds of people who could be working

on it, like young architects, small firms, racially

diverse ownership of firms, and so on. It would

be so much better if we had more diverse

perspectives brought to it. So, the loss is really

on the side of the industry. There are small, local firms, gigantic

multinational firms, and a range in between,

each of which approaches the tall building

differently. It’s not so much about the characteristics of every person involved. Once

you start looking at the typology, it is really

shocking how much similarity there is in the

make-up of the companies doing it, and it’s

reflected in the work. The Aqua got a lot of attention when it was

completed. How do you feel about it now?

I really like being in the same town as that

building, because it was our first. Also, I tend

to go back to it to see how it is being used

and how the communities in the building

have formed. I’ve always thought of that

building as almost like a vertical piece of

infrastructure that people can make their own

Having designed the 262-meter Aqua in Chicago, which completed in 2009,

Jeanne Gang, principal and founder of Studio Gang Architects, received

considerable attention for what was then the tallest building ever designed by a

woman-led firm. The significance of her work extends far beyond this, as the head

of one of the most innovative and research-focused practices working in the tall

building industry today. Daniel Safarik, CTBUH Editor, spoke with Gang for her

long-overdue Talking Tall interview.

Jeanne Gang Architect and MacArthur Fellow Jeanne Gang is the

founding principal of Studio Gang, an architecture

and urban design practice with offices in Chicago

and New York. Jeanne is recognized internationally

for a design process that foregrounds the

relationships between individuals, communities,

and environments. Drawing insight from ecological

systems, her analytical and creative approach

has produced some of today’s most innovative

architecture such as the Vista Tower, currently under

construction, and Aqua Tower in downtown Chicago.

Jeanne is engaged in major projects throughout the

Americas and Europe, including high-rise towers in

New York, San Francisco, Toronto, and Amsterdam.

on the inside. It’s not the sort of building

where every interior detail is dictated by the

architect. It is a flexible structure that can be

a hotel, condominiums, and apartments. What I discovered is that it really is a very

social building. The developer, Magellan

Development Group, which also manages

the building, tells me that there are very

strong social connections in that building.

There are activity groups, they’ve started

their own gardens on the rooftop, and people talk to each other a lot more than

they do in some of the other buildings (see

Figure 1). It really plays out some of the ideas

that we had in the beginning. To be able see

that in reality is really important. How would you say the ideas of communal

space, balconies, shading, and modulated

views in residential high-rise projects that

you executed with Aqua have been modified for more recent projects?

One of the things I really liked about the

balconies of Aqua was the social compo-

nent, the fact that you could see the neighbors in an oblique way. That makes the

balconies more like front stoops on a traditional house. I thought there was a lot of

potential in that, but the downside was that,

in order to get the cantilevers, we had to

have a non-thermally-broken slab from inside to outside. We tried to have a

thermally-broken slab, but could not achieve

the cantilevers within budget. We wanted to answer the question, “do thermal breaks in balconies improve energy

performance?” There has been work done on

it in Canada, but it was in a different climate

(Hardock & Roppel 2013). The main reason to

break the slab is to prevent condensation on

About CTBUH

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) is the world’s leading resource for professionals focused on the inception, design, construction, and operation of tall buildings and future cities. Founded in 1969 and headquartered at Chicago’s historic Monroe Building, the CTBUH is a not-for-profit organization with an Asia Headquarters office at Tongji University, Shanghai; a Research Office at Iuav University, Venice, Italy; and an Academic Office at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. CTBUH facilitates the exchange of the latest knowledge available on tall buildings around the world through publications, research, events, working groups, web resources, and its extensive network of international representatives. The Council’s research department is spearheading the investigation of the next generation of tall buildings by aiding original research on sustainability and key development issues. The Council’s free database on tall buildings, The Skyscraper Center, is updated daily with detailed information, images, data, and news. The CTBUH also developed the international standards for measuring tall building height and is recognized as the arbiter for bestowing such designations as “The World’s Tallest Building.”
