Colorectal Cancer Awareness New Technology for Breast Cancer Patients Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center is pleased to offer new surgical treatment technology for breast cancer patients. The wire-free radar localization system uses radar technology to mark the area in the breast that needs to be removed surgically, allowing for precise removal of the tumor. “Surgery can make patients anxious,” said Renee Arlow, MD, board-certified breast surgeon for Conemaugh Physician Group – Breast Surgery. “Performing this procedure prior to surgery helps to lessen the patient’s anxiety, decreases the time required at the hospital the day of surgery, and increases patient comfort.” “Patient comfort and safety is always our priority,” said Dr. Arlow. “By using this technology we are providing a better patient experience, becoming more accurate with the removal of breast tumors, and decreasing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.” The new wire-free device is a reflector about the size of a grain of rice and, once inserted, the patient is not even aware that it is in place. The surgeon uses safe, non- radioactive radar waves to detect the reflector within the breast with accuracy up to 1 mm. Surgeons have more control when making an incision to adequately reach and remove the tumor, allowing for reduced scarring. Once the tumor and wire-free system are removed, the technology sensors confirm that the device has been removed in entirety from the patient. Unlike wire technology that can be displaced from the breast during patient transport, when moving onto the operating table, or during preparations, the wire-free device is internal in the breast tissue and does not become dislodged. The wire-free system can be used for cancerous cells as well as breast abnormalities. Appointments with Conemaugh Physician Group – Breast Surgery may be made by calling (814) 262-2444.

Delivering High Quality Patient Care

conemaugh.org

IDENTIFY PATIENTS CORRECTLY

Use at least Two Patient Identifiers when providing care, treatment or services (patient name & date of birth). • Newborns are at high risk of misidentification due to their inability to speak and lack of unique features: Use distinct methods of identification

for newborn patients – Distinct naming system, standardized practices for identification banding, establish communication tools among staff.

Make sure that the correct patient gets the correct blood when they get a blood transfusion.

IMPROVE STAFF COMMUNICATION

Get important test results to the right person on time.

USE MEDICINES SAFELY

Label all medications / medication containers (e.g. syringes, medicine cups, basins), or other solutions on and off the sterile field in peri-operative and other procedural settings.

Reduce likelihood of patient harm associated with the use of anticoagulation therapy.

Record and pass along correct information about a patient’s medicines. Find out what medicines the patient is taking. Compare those medicines to new medicines given to the patient.

USE ALARMS SAFELY

Ensure that alarms on medical equipment are heard and responded to on time.

PREVENT INFECTION

• Comply with current World Health Organization (WHO) or CDC Hand Hygiene Guidelines.

• Use proven guidelines to prevent infections of the urinary tract that are caused by catheters.

• Use proven guidelines to prevent infections that are difficult to treat. • Use proven guidelines to prevent infection after surgery.

• Use proven guidelines to prevent infection of the blood from central lines.

IDENTIFY PATIENT SAFETY RISKS

Identify individuals at risk for suicide.

PREVENT MISTAKES IN SURGERY

Make sure that the correct surgery is done on the correct patient and the correct place on the patient’s body.

Mark the correct place on the patient’s body where the surgery is to be done.

Pause before the surgery to make sure that a mistake is not being made.

National Patient Safety GoalsThe Joint Commission has released the National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs) for 2019. The purpose of the National Patient Safety Goals is to improve patient safety. The Joint Commission established its NPSGs in order to help accredited organizations address specific areas of concern in regard to health care safety, and to focus on how to solve them. Focus areas include Identify Patients Correctly, Improve Staff Communication, Use Medicines Safely, Use Alarms Safely, Prevent Infection, Identify Patient Safety, Risks and Prevent Mistakes in Surgery. Additional information for each category will be shared in upcoming Communication Links. If there are questions, please review with your manager.

Trauma Nursing Floor

Security Upgrades

New security measures have been implemented on Nursing Units

Ashman 8 and 9. Due to the Trauma cases that these departments

receive, the floors are now able to be placed in lockdown should a

safety issue arise. This is similar to the security lockdown processes in place in our ED, ICU, and Maternity units. This new security measure will not affect patient care or visitor access

unless the floor is on lockdown, at which time additional instructions

would be provided.

Conemaugh Miners Imaging UpdateConemaugh Miners Medical Imaging department welcomes a new digital fluoro/radiography room which will allow them to evaluate abnormalities and pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract, urinary system, and much more! This new technology helps lower radiation dose and helps optimize patient satisfaction. The technologists are happy that they are able to use this new equipment to continue to make the community healthier.

Debbie Spells-Wilson, Chief Operating Officer at Conemaugh Miners Medical Center, was recently recognized by the Certification Board for Professionals in Patient Safety (CBPPS) as a Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS). She earned this credential in part by passing a rigorous, evidence-based examination that tests candidates on their competency in patient safety science and application. “Earning the Patient Safety credential demonstrates Debbie’s competency in healthcare management and patient safety science,” said Timothy Harclerode, FACHE, Chief Executive Officer, Conemaugh Miners Medical Center.

Conemaugh Miners Leader Earns Certification

Construction UpdatesSpecial thanks to our construction crews for all of their efforts during the winter months! Construction is moving along at all of our new locations. In Ebensburg (two photos below), footers and foundation walls are erected; utility rough-ins and drainage is underway.

In Somerset (photo left), site work is underway, including storm water features being built and the building pad prep beginning.

The Conemaugh School of Nursing (not pictured) demolition is complete and new walls are starting to go up. In the molecular lab (not pictured), demolition is underway.

Molecular Lab ConstructionConemaugh Memorial Medical Center will adding a new laboratory service. Construction for the new molecular laboratory is currently underway, and will be located in the Good Sam building on the first floor (former location of bed storage / repair which has moved to GS 5). Molecular diagnosis is a collection of techniques used to analyze various biologic markers in the human genome and proteomic individual code. Conemaugh Memorial’s molecular lab will be The Joint Commission, CLIA accredited, state of the art, esoteric laboratory, specialized in high complexity molecular testing with an extensive portfolio of services including molecular oncology, infectious diseases, coagulation, and eventually Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). The aim is to provide an individualized targeted approach in disease detection and therapeutic choices. The molecular lab will start by providing services such as fluorescence in situ hybridization panels for proliferative plasma cell, lymphocytic and myeloid leukemia; oncologic testing for gastrointestinal, lung, breast, and skin malignancy; qualitative and quantitative analysis of viral infection (HIV, HCV, and HBV), HPV testing, and acquired and hereditary coagulation disorder of factor V Leiden and prothrombin gene mutation.

Conemaugh Memorial Earns CDC Recognition For Diabetes Prevention Program

Conemaugh Memorial has earned Full Recognition for its diabetes prevention program from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Conemaugh Memorial is one of only 17 sites in Pennsylvania to earn this recognition. Conemaugh earned this designation for effectively delivering quality, evidence-based diabetes prevention programs that meet CDC standards. Conemaugh’s lifestyle change program contributes to the prevention of type 2 diabetes in local residents. Diabetes is a chronic, often progressive, condition when the body has an increase in sugar levels. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and occurs when the body does not use insulin properly. It is often caused by obesity and lack of physical activity. Symptoms of type 2 diabetes may include increased thirst, increased hunger, dry mouth, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, and headaches. Long-term impact of uncontrolled type 2 diabetes includes damage to the body’s nervous system, eyes, kidneys, and heart. Risk factors for diabetes include being over 45 years of age, being overweight, low physical activity level, high blood pressure, family history of diabetes, and history of diabetes during pregnancy. Conemaugh’s diabetes education programs are recognized by the American Diabetes Association and are led by Certified Diabetes Educators including registered nurses, dietitians, and additional healthcare professionals. For more information or to contact the Conemaugh Diabetes Institute, call 814.534.6800.

Conemaugh Meyersdale Begins DEXA ServicesConemaugh Meyersdale Medical Center recently added Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) scanning capabilities to its array of diagnostic imaging procedures. DEXA is most commonly used to measure bone loss and detect osteoporosis or help identify patients who may be at risk for this condition. “We’re very excited to offer this important diagnostic tool to our patients,” said Mark Meekins, Manager of Imaging at Conemaugh Meyersdale. “DEXA is the gold standard in bone mineral density imaging.” DEXA works by measuring the amount of x-rays that are absorbed by the bones in the patient’s body. Two x-ray energies allow the machine to differentiate between bone and soft tissue, providing a very accurate estimation of bone density. The radiologist produces a report for the patient’s health care provider based on the bone density measurements and medical history. “DEXA is non-invasive, simple, and accurate,” Meekins said. Although DEXA scanning exposes a patient to radiation, it is only 1/20 the dosage of a normal chest x-ray. “The very minimal exposure to radiation makes this procedure extremely safe for our patients. The entire procedure only takes a few minutes in a comfortable, private environment.” Patients considering having a DEXA scan performed include women over 65, men over 70, post-menopausal women, and individuals with a history of fractures. Certain medications, health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, and a family history of bone-related issues are additional factors that can lead to poor bone health.

National Organ Donor Day

In celebration of National Donor Day, Conemaugh Meyersdale Medical Center and Family Health Care gave out special organ donation cards and lollipops to patients, visitors and staff to encourage organ donor registration on Valentine’s Day. National Donor Day aims to raise awareness of the lifesaving benefits of organ, eye and tissue donation while reminding everyone of the importance of discussing the topic with loved ones. “In a small way, we wanted to do our part to encourage everyone to consider being a donor,” said Pam Swansboro, Conemaugh Meyersdale’s Chief Nursing Officer. According to Swansboro one donor can save the lives of eight people and enhance the lives of 75 others. “Giving the gift of life is the greatest gift that any of us can give, and it only takes a few minutes to register as a donor,” Swansboro said. For more information about organ donation or to register as a donor, visit: donatelifepa.org or core.org/register. Pictured are (from left): Denise Phillippi, Beth Lantz and Jennifer Bobak. Roger Sarver is seated.

Meyersdale LeadershipConemaugh Meyersdale recently honored Denise Shesko MS, RN, CNO, at a retirement reception held at the medical center in early February. Pam Swansboro, MS, RN, was recently named as the new CNO.
