Floors in industry and commerceare not just parts of a structure.Industrial floors are heavilyexposed to stress.

Many production processes andprocedures take place on thesefloors. They are also exposed toindustrial chemicals.

On top of this, industrial floorsalso have to meet a variety ofoperational requirements. SlipResistance, Crack Bridging,Non-flammability, Conductivity,Aesthetics, Ease OfMaintenance, and, last but notleast, Long Life – these are just afew examples of the expectationsfor functional industrial floors.

In industries where electroniccomponents or volatilechemicals are involved, electrostatic discharge can result insignificant damage, injury andfinancial loss.

Even when people are equipped tohandle static-sensitive devices and

CONDUCTIVE & STATIC DISSIPATIVE FLOORING SYSTEMS

a facility’s flooring system meetsthe basic standards for drainingstatic charge, inadvertent contactcan occur. How? The first step isunderstanding how much chargeyour facility floor needs todissipate. This factor can differgreatly by BVG (Body VoltageGeneration).

Electrical charges can havecatastrophic consequencesin static sensitiveenvironments. Staticcontrol flooring can bedefined as a flooringsystem that can drainand/or dissipate static

ANTI STATIC FLOORING

and/or dissipate staticcharges by groundpersonnel, equipment orother objects contactingthe floor surface or thatcontrols the generationand accumulation ofstatic charges.

Electrostatic charges can be induced fromfriction between two different kinds ofmaterial (between two non conductors orsimply by common surface contact). Suchcharging takes place readily when mostflooring material is walked on or drivenover and these discharges can often beaccompanied by sparks. As everyone isaware, in some industries, sparks canhave devastating consequences. Thishazard can be eliminated if our anti-staticflooring system is the choice of the

ELECTROSTATIC CHARGES

flooring system is the choice of thespecifying engineer. These products meetthe requirements of electrical conductivityas well as a high resistance to chemicalattack and are designed for applications insuch places as laboratories, chemicalplants, painting manufacturers andanywhere where solvents are used.Additionally, some industries such asthe electronics trade, require anti-static coatings for protectingelectrical components from failure.

The electrical discharge capacity ofsynthetic resin flooring is determinedby measuring the ohmic resistance. Asa rule, floors with a leakage resistanceof 10+6 ohms are considered to beelectrically conductive. However, eachcountry has its own standards for howthey rate this discharge capacity. Forinstance DIN 51953 applies inGermany, UL 779 applies in the UnitedStates and the British standard is

LEAKOFF OF ELECTROSTATIC CHARGES

States and the British standard is3398. However, many engineers haverequirements far below those that arecertifiable by organizations such asthe Underwriters Laboratories, depending on the protection neededfor their prospective environments.Although it is widely recognized in theindustry that less than 109 ohms ofresistance is considered to be anti-static.

• Concrete is conductive because of the moisturecontent present in the concrete. However, themoisture content can be highly variable. That iswhy a suitable primer must be used to achieveproper anti-static characteristics below 1.0e+9ohms. The primer increases the conductivity bydecreasing the ohmic resistance. The fullpotential is not achieved without an appropriateprimer.

• Finally, it should be pointed out that groundingthe anti-static conductive system does improvethe performance of the system by decreasingthe ohmic resistance and charge buildup. Theconductive primer is the product that should be

SOME THINGS WE SHOULD KNOW

conductive primer is the product that should begrounded and not the topcoat or anyunderlayment placed prior to the primer. This iseasily accomplished by grounding the coatingwith strips of copper or grounding strapsconnected to a water pipe or neutral conductorin the electric wiring system. Two earthingpoints normally suffice for a single room. Oneground point per 200 square meters of floorspace is the general rule for large areas when allindividual slabs are connected with conductivecopper strips or tape.

• Hopefully, the above information has given abasis of understanding of how, why and for whatreasons anti-static coating systems work.
