    Review: Union with Christ

It is in Christthat we have been elected andpredestined for salvation.

It is in Christthat we are called and regenerated.

It is in Christthat we receive the gifts of faith andrepentance.

It is in Christthat we are justified.

It is in Christthat we have received the adoption

as sons. It is in Christthat we are sanctified.

And it is in Christthat we are glorified.

In other words, all of the aspects of theordo salutisbelong to us only throughunion with Christ.

They are his and through our union withhim by the Holy Spirit all of them areoursfrom eternity past to eternity

futurewe have been blessed with everyspiritual blessing in Christ(Eph 1:3).

    Review: Union with Christ

We must understand that as long as

Christ remains outside of us, and we areseparated from him, all that he has

suffered and done for the salvation of thehuman race remains useless and of no

value for us (John Calvin, Institutes

    3.1.1).

    Sanctification: Toward a Definition

To be sanctified means to be set apart for holyuse.

In the context of the Old Testament sacrificial

system, bowls and cups and lavers and priests, etc. were sanctified by God.

They were set apart for use in theTabernacle/Temple through some symbolic rite

involving blood and/or oil and/or water. Old Testament terms include: sanctify, consecrate, set apart, and make holy.

    Exod 40:9: "Then you shall take the anointingoil and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it,and shall consecrate it and all its furnishings;

and it shall be holy. 1 Chron 23:13: The sons of Amram were Aaron

and Moses. And Aaron was set apart to sanctifyhim as most holy, he and his sons forever, to

burn incense before the LORD, to minister toHim and to bless in His name forever.

    Sanctification: Toward a Definition

Because the sanctification of individualsand objects of the Old Covenant set themapart for holy use, for service to the holy

God, and ethical idea developed from theceremonial one.

To be sanctified in this sense is to behave

as one set apart for service to the holyGod; i.e., to behave obediently.

Ps 15:1-5: O LORD, who may abide in Your tent? Whomay dwell on Your holy hill? He who walks with integrity, and works righteousness, And speaks truth in his heart. He does not slander with his tongue, Nor does evil to his

neighbor, Nor takes up a reproach against his friend; Inwhose eyes a reprobate is despised, But who honorsthose who fear the LORD; He swears to his own hurtand does not change; He does not put out his money atinterest, Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent.

He who does these things will never be shaken. Lev 19:2: Speak to all the congregation of the sons of

Israel and say to them, You shall be holy, for I theLORD your God am holy.

    Sanctification: Toward a Definition

The New Testament builds on both theceremonial and ethical aspects of sanctification, emphasizing the latter (ethical sanctification).

    2 Tim 2:21:

Therefore, if anyone cleanseshimself from these things, he will be a vessel forhonor, sanctified, useful to the Master, preparedfor every good work.

1 Pet 1:15-16: but like the Holy One whocalled you, be holy yourselves also in all yourbehavior; because it is written, "YOU SHALL BEHOLY, FOR I AM HOLY."

Christians over time are being sanctified.

    Sanctified?

Definitive sanctification is a unilateral actof God that is performed upon usirrespective of faith and

Progressive sanctification is a responsiveact of God that is performed upon us notonly once we repent and believe, but as

we repent and believe throughout ourChristian lives.
