Concrete Technology Laboratory

Room (QT 005), Block (QT),Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering,The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

The Concrete Technology Laboratory is fully equipped with world-class facilitiesfor testing on building materials, e.g., concrete, steel, masonry, FRP, steel-concrete composites etc. The laboratory serves a broad spectrum of activitiescovering those related to teaching, research, development, and consultancy;such as:• Physical tests of raw materials, viz., sieving, density, water absorption,

crushing value, 10% fine value, etc.

• Preparation of fresh cement and concrete mixture, such as fresh mortar, concrete, grout, concrete blocks, geo‐polymer, etc.

• Standard experimental tests for building materials, e.g., compression, tensile, flexural and splitting tests, ultrasonic measurement, static anddynamic Young’s‐modulus tests, etc.

• Large‐scale performance test for structural members which includescompression, tension, dynamic failure test, etc.

• Durability tests of building materials, in particular shrinkage, chloridepermeability, fire resistance, carbonation, etc.

• Advanced and additional tests, namely abrasion resistance, rheology andworkability of binders, experiments on fiber reinforced concrete, acceleratedcarbonation under pressure and flowing conditions, etc.

Introduction

Crocker Rotating Pan Mixer

The Croker Rotating Pan Mixer is aconcrete mixer. It incorporates twindrives with separate geared motorunits powering the rotating pan.Together with the twin springmounted mixing pedals and fixedscraper blades at sides, it enablesto produce high quality andconsistent concrete mix.

Viskomat NT - Rheometer for Mortar and Paste

The viskomat NT is a versatile rotationalrheometer for determining the rheologicalbehavior of fine-grained building materialssuch as cement paste, mortar, fineconcrete, plaster etc. The equipment isgenerally employed to assess:

• flow curves and rheological parameters

• stiffening behaviour as a function of timea stirring speed

• effects of concrete admixtures andmineral blending agents.

The temperature and humidity ininsulated environmental chambers aremonitored constantly and automaticallycontrolled to provide the ideal controlconditions for curing building materials,in particular concrete, cement mortar, cement paste, etc.

Environmental Chambers

The MTS Model 815 test systemis ideal for uniaxial tests that arecritical to research works, todeliver high uptime anddependable results.

It offers high axial force capacity, with compression ratings above4000kN, particularly suitable forcarefully controlled studies ofmaterial-failure behaviour.

MTS 815 Test System

This testing equipment, Matest TwoFrames Group, is used to measurethe mechanical properties ofbuilding materials.

It offers the considerable advantageto perform compression tests onconcrete cube, cylinder and blockspecimens; flexural tests onconcrete beams, and by using othersuitable accessories, to performsplitting tensile test.

Matest Test Frames Group High-Temperature Furnace with MTS 815 Compression Test System

A tailor-made High-TemperatureHeating Furnace with MTS 815Test System is designed andallows to conduct compressiontest under a constantly heatingenvironment up to a temperatureof 800 degree Celsius. Suchunique device is used to conductresearch on fire resistance ofbuilding materials.

Main Equipment

Chloride Ion Penetration Device

The testing system is generally employed todetermine the total charge passed and electricalconductivity of concrete.

It can also provide a rapid indication of concretespecimen resistance to the penetration of chlorideions.

A customized High-Temperature CO2 Autoclave(produced by Haage Anagramm Technologien GmbH)is employed to conduct the CO2 curing of buildingmaterials under an elevated temperature.

The equipment provides a precise and reliable testingenvironment for advanced studies on the carbonationbehavior of construction materials at a high pressureand a high temperature.
