ABOUT THIS FORUM

This year, we aim to include discussions on specifications and on concrete paving operations as regular features. We also aim to invite materials and equipment suppliers, and specialist sub-contractors to provide relevant information about concrete pavements and related operations.

Our first Sydney Forum for 2014 focuses on Road Pavements, and examines Forming Time & Retempering, Subsurface Drainage, and a review of the changes in the recently released Edition 3 of RMS Specification R83.

Paver Operations – Forming Time & RetemperingWorkability and slipformability are key factors in paving operations. Their influence is well known on aspects such as compaction, finishing and ride quality. Consistence (slump) is the commonly used measure of workability but there are numerous challenges involved with its use, not the least of which is its time-dependence. This session will discuss key aspects of monitoring and controlling these factors in the field.

Subsurface DrainageThis segment of the Forum will present a review of the RMS technical guide to accompany the standard drawings and other current issues relating to subsurface drainage.

We are also pleased to have presentations from Ditjet Australia and Alligator Constructions. Ditjet Australia will present a system for automation of a labour intensive process producing a revolutionary, superior engineered, quality controlled product saving both time and money. Alligator Constructions will share their 30 years’ experience installing subsoil drainage, discussing variations from project to

project, comments on RMS specifications, USA comparisons, and generally – How to Do It Better.

We appreciate the support and sponsorship for this event from Ditjet Autralia and Alligator Constructions. They will have display materials and will be available to talk with delegates during the session breaks.

Structural Design – The Key Role of Transverse reinforcementIn reinforced concrete pavements, the longitudinal reinforcement typically dominates any discussion on design. However, the transverse reinforcement plays a key role, especially in the case of tiebars in longitudinal joints. If tiebars fail (for whatever reason) and allow longitudinal joints to open, the design fatigue life of the pavement can be reduced by half. This session will discuss the numerous potential modes of failure in transverse steel.

RMS R83 Edition 3 – A Look at What’s ChangedEdition 3 of R83 was released in November last year. It is timely, therefore, to become familiar with the new provisions of this specification, and particularly those aspects which have changed from the previous edition. Some comments on the RMS 3211 (Cements, Binders & Fillers) will be included.

Seventh Annual General MeetingThe 7th Annual General Meeting of Members of ASCP will be held during this Forum. Non-members are most welcome to attend.

This Forum provides valuable information for Members and others, as well as the opportunity to question and discuss the relevant issues related to the above topics.
